October 16. BBs Lawnsjde BBOLee McBee and Lonnie Ray

This was interesting to hear. McBeeand Ray are old pals, but they haven'tplayed together for quite awhile. The duoonly had a couple of days to rehearse, whichmeant this was about half ajam andhalf numbers.

McBee is the vo-calist with MikeMor-gan & the Crawl. Hehas a good voice forthe blues, rough andgrowly. His harp tonedoesn't have thatsame kind of edge toit, but he plays some

MUSIC REVIEw nice stuff.B y LM . SMITH Ray was happy to........................... play accompanist allnight, taking only a few solobreaks.

Theguys opened with amedium tempoinstrumental then went into a tune whosetitle I've forgotten. Itcontains the immor-tal line "I'm finding it hard to miss youwith my pistol in your mouth." Good tuneand nicely performed.

The lack of rehearsal time actuallyhelped. The set was good and loose on asong list of mostly standards.

In the second set Little Hatch joinedin. Hatch has a much rawer harp tonethan McBees. And while his voice issmoother it has just as much dege.

BBs is a great, intimate place to hearthe kind of tunes Lindsey's bringing in.Good ribs, too.October 1112. NjgbtmoyesSmokin' Joe Kubek Band

I happened to catch portions of bothnights and it provided a reminder of thedangers associated with review perfor-mances. Friday night the band soundedgood, even though they had driven in fromDallas that day. But it wasn't until Satur-day night that I realized they had beenjust a bit flat Friday. Not at all bad, butonSaturday there was just a bit more fire tothe band's playing.

Kubek is a quality Texas style guitar-ist. He has that same thick tone that SRVhad. The guy has a lot of chops and astorehouse full of licks.

Bnois King sets this band apart. Theguy is a high quality singer with a great, smooth voice. More a crooner than ashouter, King fits in a niche somewherebetween Robert Cray and Lou Rawls. Healsodoes someguitar work, which he does

    NOVEMBER 19912

pretty well. He is a flashier guitarist thanKubek, picking with his teeth and goingthrough more contortions, and he reallyknows how to comp,

The band did a number oftunes offthenew album togood crowdresponse. This isa good band to see live; high energy, ex-tremely dancable with a lot of music tolisten to.October 17. Grand EmporiumEddie Clearwater

I don't make it down tothe Emporiummuch during the week, but this was aworthwhile exception. Clearwater has agreat voice, big and full (of course, he's abig dude togowith it), and goodguitarist. His tone is almost nasty and he has aninteresting attack. When he takes a soloyou get all line and sound without anyneed for flash.

This is the way blues started out tobe, simple and unadorned; straight up, nochaser.October 19 NightmovesSoulard Blues Band

This is a St. Louis band that hasn'tbeen in town for about three years. Thequintet has an unusual sound because ofthe combination oftrumpet andharmonica.Good jump band with some fine players. Also fun watching trumpeter BuzzCasserly and harpist Jim McClaren doingtheir unison moves.

"Mystery Train" featured an excellentharp/drum opening. McClaren also con-tributed a good solo, as did Casserly. Theguys dosome standards, like "Cross CutSaw" and "Walk The Dog,"as well as somethings unusual, such as "The Letter," "Te-quila" and "Cherry Pink and Apple Blos-som White."

Soulard has an outstanding rhythmsection. Art Dwyer, upright bass, does alot of walking but never gets in the way.Kirk Grice does somereal subtle things ondrums, but remains a solid time keeper. The band gets showy at times, likewhen Casserly, McClaren and guitaristLarry Griffin come down offthe stage andwalk among the audience. Goodband anda lot of fun.

working on it. I don't know why, not muchcould be done to improve this impressivedebut effort.

"Losing Ground" opensMightyFineDancing, and it also tells you what is instore. Morgan extends a goodguitar hook,McBee's rough voice is the bait, and you'recaught and hauled in.

"You Ain't Like You Used to Be"features an interesting rhythmic solointrobefore moving into more melodic wander-ings. Morgan throughout displays a finesense of line and melodic invention.

Frankie's Blues" has more of a deltasound, fuzzed through. Good set oflyricsand a real minimalist arrangement. "Don'tStay Out All Night Long" is a StaxNolttype tune.

"Big D Shuffie" is a driving instru-mental. It features some good harp workfrom McBee in the intro and opening solo.McBee's harp tone is a bit different and heshows off some good chops. The wholetune has the feel of an old fashioned raveup.

"Kiss Me Baby" has some of the bestguitar work on the album. Morgan hasobviously listened tosome B.B. King, buttakes it in a different direction. Evenwhen he uses a standard riff Morgan'sdoing something new with it.

    Too Cool to Move, Antone'sHallelujah! "Icepick"James Harman's

new release, DoNotDisturb, is out and it'shot. It's another cleverly styled concept byJames Harman. It is about life on theroad, one night stands, and cheezy ho-tels. Harman created all the lyrics onDo Not Disturb and the music isrich and soulful. Maybe it's expe-rience the way the music ismixed with "nogimmicks, no .fgags," it surely is Harman's ..,best blues to date.

ThoseDangerous Gentlemen,Harman's band, are in good formwith Joe Toy on guitar, Jeff Turmeson bass, sax and guitar and StephenMuligan on drums. Plus special guestsappearances by Dave Hidalgo on accor-dion of LosLobos fame and Lee Allen onsax tightens upDo Not Disturb. "Icepick,"on harp and vocals, gives advice, confessesthe blues, and socks you with his charmand wit.

Watch out folks, the Motel King him-selfwill beback in KCon November 8 and9 at the Grand Emporium.

Charlie Musselwhite, harpmanextraordinare, has a newAlligator releasecalled Signature. Musselwhite has beenputting his ownmark on harmonica tech-niques for over 30 years. His innovative

harmonica style and dynamic vocals hasinfluenced numerous musicians. Luckily, today he isbacked by the finest blues bandthat he has ever played with -- AndrewJones on guitar, Tommy Hill on drums, and bassist Artis Joyce. Half of the songsare written by Musselwhite. Special fa-vorites are "Blues Got MeAgain," "MamaLong Legs" and "What's New?"

Long time friend ofCharlie, John LeeHooker sings and plays guitar on "Cheatin'oil Me." KC BBQ enthusiasts' favorite,"Hey Miss Bessie," is re-released on Sig-nature.

Overall, Charlie Musselwhite dem-onstrates that he is a master bluesharpman with diversity and depththat makes Signature unique andonly few will ever match.

Snooky Pryor starts offhisnew release, Too Cool to Move, by

his favorite line: "I feel just like aroach on the front porch in the winter--''''_ too cool tomove. Please listen to

these Blues." And it is great blues listen-ing. Snooky on harp and vocals wrote allthe cuts except one and recorded thesetunes over the past two years in Austin,Tx. Snooky's Too Cool toMove has the bestblues musicians guitars: Luther Tucker,Duke Robillard, Derek O'Brien. Piano:Pinetop Perkins and Denny Freeman.Bass: Preston Hubbard and Calvin Jones.Drums: George Rains, Willie Smith andTed Harvey.

Born over 70 years ago in Lambert,Ms., Snooky Pryor began playing the har-monica at age 7. Snooky is known forbringing the harp to the microphone ,

developing a sound that has become astandard Chicago blues sound. SnookyPryor is a living blues legend.

It is said that there are no livinglegends, only preservationists. Whateverthe choice of wording may be, at 81 yearsyoung, William "Champion Jack" Dupreeis one ofthe most influential blues pianistout ofNew Orleans. Aversatile man, whois capable ofplaying the piano, drums, andguitar, he has many talents that also

    8 NOVEMBER 1991

include his vocals and song writing abili-ties. His musichas been recorded bymanyartists over the years.

His newest release, Forever And Everdoesn't show his age at all. It is not purelyBarrelhouse piano work, nor is it ModernBlues. The best way to explain what it iswould be to say that it is Champion JackBlues. Over the years the blues has be-come a universal language all its own, notonly in its music, but the true meaning ofthe blues is its way oflife. It is a feeling ofanything from sorrow to joy.

Being that the blues is personal, yetshared in the theme of music, ChampionJack's "They GaveMeAway" is a personalexperience he suffered at the age of one

year. He plays a slow, down and out bluesnumber expressing a tragic happening inhis life. "Yella Pocahantas" is a boldlystyled tune, giving a swamp sound mixedwith a boogie drum beat. It's a beat thatdrives your limbs tomoving. The only songon this release that he did not write is"Third Degree," a song originally done byEddie Boyd. This is another slow bluesnumber, guitar and bass as solid asDupree's piano. Anold standard, yet donevery well. Picking up the tempo is "DupreeSpecial." In his Barrelhouse style he keepsthe 88's flowingwith a pace that is steadilyrolling along.

He ends this release with "Let's TalkIt Over." He "chucks and jives" his waywith its intro, then gets down tosome badass blues that will set you back on yourfeet and make you wonder where he getsthat energy from.
