Ethical Theories

According to Aronson %/00&*,he study of standards for determining what behavior is

right and wrong or good and bad is called ethics. 1espite there are various theories about the

ethical theories, one thing does remain constant. It is a morality. If we e#amine further about

ethics and morals, ethics are “ The rules of conduct recognized in respect to aparticular class of human actions or a particular group or culture”

It is important to have ethics in the business. thical behaviors and corporate social

responsibility can bring positive implication for the business. In the business ethics, there are

/ dominant approaches to evaluate the ethical nature : teleological and deontological.Teleological  means leader-s action have no intrinsic moral status and oriented for the

outcomes or the end %6anungo,/00&* .It doesn-t matter how to get there as long as the actions

can make larger merit to numerous people, it will considered morally right !owever, this

belief has its drawbacks  in that it could encourage people to conduct in anyway because

 priorities the outcomes of actions.

7n the other hand, According to 6anungo %/00&* deontological  considers a leader-s

action to have intrinsic moral status. 1eontological theories more focus for the outcomes

even though some acts are always wrong3 can be morally bad. Actions in deontology are

always +udged independently of their outcome. his simple e#planation for deontological is if

the leader acts according to her3his duty3 moral principal, then the leaders- act can described

as ethically without considered the conse8uences. "evertheless, 4inger%* stated thatdeontological has removed emotion ,sympathy , and any moral worth from ethics.   !e

The 4-V model of ethical leadership

I believe to create a great leader, ethical leadership training must be a part of the education of

today-s student. he 9 : model leadership model is used because this model incorporates allthe crucial elements in leadership development. 9: model is created by 1r. $ill ;race from

the <enter for thical Leadership. !e believes that ethical leadership is “knowing your core

values and having the courage to live them in all parts of your life in service of the common

good”.

Values, is the beginning of ethical leadership. It is about what the leaders should base

their action on. Vision  is about the ability to frame their action. Voice  can be used ase#pressing vision to others in a persuasive way to motivate them to action. It is more like the

instrument to pronounce the vision of the leaders. Value and vision will give the group

direction and purpose that will be identified the group. o make the groups more dynamic,

voice  is given to values and vision. he last one is the fundamentally another name for

thical Leadership which located at the center of the model, Virtue. Virtue  is a blend of

principle, sensitivity to relationships, and commitment to the common good. :irtue

Ethical and nethical leadership !ase

$efore I write this blog, I already have one favorite inspirational leader. 4ince I read

book “7nward” by !oward 4chultz, I know he is one of the good e#amples of ethical

business leaders. !e is the <7 of 4trabucks since /000 and he is honored as one of the

Bworld-s greatest leadersB and earns a top&0 spot on an employeerated survey of e#ecutives.

In /0&9, ! thics Cesource <enter is pleased to honor !oward 4chultz Dace Award for

Leadership in thics.

he ne#t 8uestion is 2

“"hat makes #oward $chult% the kind of leader he was which also put him on the list

of the &"orld's () *reat +eaders

So I try make a list :

o The first thing is he can demonstrate ethical leadership  in establishing a

values-based organization with high standards of quality, service to the

community, and respect for humanity. (Connector,2015)o He has Transformational Leadership democratic style  which allows the

employee to give free opinion and input to the leader. He allows his employee

to make personal calls and email to seeks advice from them. He give

motivation and inspiration of his followers. Moreover, He think it is important

to take real good care of his employess. He entitles his employee with

comprehensive health insurance and option to own stocks, also flexibility to

choose their own working hours. According to fastcomapny(2015) He

announce that Starbucks would cover college tuition for its U.S. employees

working more than 20 hours per week who enroll in an online college degree

program from Arizona State University.o He has a mission and vision. When I watch Super Soul Sunday, he said to

Oprah “My passion is building a company that is focused on treating people

with respect and dignity”(Schultz, 2013). He understand that knowing

employees and customer is very important. For Howard, employees and

customer are pillars for his business.

Based on that case, I think Howard hold on Deontological principle in running his

business. He put the process as the priorities, and be an ethical leadership. No wonder he won

numerous award for his leadership.

“unethical leadership is behaviors conducted and decisions made by

organizational leaders that are illegal and/or violate moral standards, and those that

impose processes and structures that promote unethical conduct by followers.” Brown

 and Mitchell (2010)

Based on Forbes (2013), Kenneth Lay- Enron is the number one unethical leader in

the world. He has a big role in the infamous corruption scandal that brought his company to

ruins. His case became a good examples of unethical leadership because of his arrogance

and perceived invincibility. According to Swarts and Watkins (2003), 20.000 employees

lost their job and their life saving because they put their entire pension portfolio on Enron

stock.Enron lost more that $60 billion in market value and more that $2 billion in pension

plans.

In my opinion, everyone can be a leader but not everyone can apply ethical

leadership. Leaders are recommended to have the ethical leadership, they have right to

choose which theory they want to apply as long as they keep paying attention for the welfare

of their employees.
