Most tracks around the country usually

draw a decent car count for their Super Late Model races, usually represent-ing three or four states. But here, they seem to invade us from six to seven different states. Texas, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Arkansas, the Carolina’s and or course, Florida all come to mind.

Tonight at the famous “Ole” half mile, and

when I say famous I’m not using the word freely. It is one of the most talked about speedways in the entire U.S. The “Most Popular Short Track Race” in the nation has put it in that elite position. I am of course talking about the “Snowball Derby”. And that is why you see the best Late Model drivers in the land keep showing up here. Last race we had a new driver from Maine. They are racing toward a guaranteed starting spot in the Derby. Example, Chase Elliott, last year’s winner is back here racing tonight.

Again the car count is healthy for the third

of five Buddy’s Home Furnishing Blizzard Series races for the Rubber and Specialties 100.

Mike Garvey won the last Blizzard and got

the $500 bounty put up by General Manager, Tim Bryant. It was for anyone who won a Blizzard race “not” driving a GARC built car.

Grand American Race Car Chassis, built by

Frankie and Augie Grill, had a 13 race win streak going until Garvey came through in a Port City/Mike Garvey car. Garvey and Augie Grill are tied for second in points just 29 behind Bubba Pollard. (See the stand-ings on the back page.) These drivers along with other strong competitors such as Benjamin, (story inside), Elliott, Rogers, Wilson, Enfinger, Alex-ander, and a host of others will make another exciting Blizzard race.

Also on the schedule are the Super Stocks,

Sportsmen and Bombers.

Finally, Derby grand-stand reserved seat

renewals are going full blast. Gilbert Ziel recently renewed his tickets. His brother, Bill finished 14th in the 1971 Derby. Renew-al deadline is Aug 1st.

Five of these are 5 Flags drivers. Which one is not? See back page.

A quick glance at Kyle Benjamin and you realize the 14-year-old phenom has grown a few inches the last few months. “I used to be shorter than the roof of the cars. “ Eerily he has soared to new heights in recent weeks. Fresh off a resume-topping victory and riding a two-race winning streak.

“We’re satisfied, but we wanna contend for the win,” Benjamin said. “We’ve been off at Five Flags this season. It’s a tough track and we’ve been missing on the setup. But we’ll get it figured out for this weekend.” You’d be foolish to bet against the kid.

Crew chief Freddie Query was a heck of hotshoe in his driving days and he has molded young talent since he put on a headset. Forever respected as a late model driver, Query helped Pensacola’s Johanna Long find her late model footing before she won the 2010 Snowball Derby and made the leap to NASCAR.

“He’s so cool,” Query said of Benja-min. “He has ice water in his blood veins.” Like Long before him, Query has been just as invaluable to Benjamin. When the team pulls into a track Benjamin has never seen before, chances are Query has.

“(Query) can show me the lines without me having to figure it out,” Benjamin said. “He’s not shy to tell me what I did wrong. Without him, I wouldn’t be where I am. He has taught me so much with driving.”

Query’s tutelage has freed up Benja-min’s parents to take care of the growing buzz that hovers above their precocious son. Steven, Kyle’s father, does a little of everything. From turning wrenches to drumming up sponsor-ships, such as his efforts to have McDonald’s for tonight’s race thanks to several Pensacola area franchises led by Donna Stump.

Kyle Benjamin’s appeal goes beyond the racetrack walls. Just as he moves the gauges inside his rides, Benjamin certainly moves the needle with fans. Especially those of his female peers. At his win here last season, high-pitched squeals from the grandstands could be heard all around the speedway.
