What did you do this summer?

This seems to be the question that most students hear as they enter the classroom at the beginning of the school year. It’s a question that is often asked when folks connect or reconnect after being away on vacation. I think it’s a great conversation starter as we begin to shift gears to our fall schedule. The next several weeks we will gather and re-gather together in the context of worship, Sunday School, choir rehearsals and Bible studies. We will have a chance to talk about our travels or our stay-cations. We will talk about new and amazing experiences we had or reflect on time that allowed us to relax and rejuvenate. Maybe summer for you did not involve travel or new experiences, but you were home and continued to see people come and go and listened to their stories as you continued along your way.

Whatever your summer experience was, I hope you have the opportunity to share it with others

as we transition back into our fall schedule. One of the things I am truly looking forward to this September is taking part, again, in God’s Work Our Hands Sunday on Sunday, September 11th. We will have the

opportunity to serve others locally and globally as we live lives of service that morning. While worship will still continue at 8 and 9:30am, many folks from Trinity will be out and about in service to others. Last year we cleaned up yards and garages at the homes of some homebound members. We helped build picnic tables for the Roby Pool and helped paint the building at the pool. We sorted through Operation Christmas Child donations and packaged up health kits for Lutheran World Relief. We made soup for City Light Ministries and made hats for Seafarers International. Several car loads of people were out at Old Dry Road Farm for weeding and other yardwork.

The projects we took part in this past year offered opportunities for folks of all walks of life. You could be out and moving, or you could be in and sitting. We all have gifts and abilities to share, and this day gives us one more chance to reach out in love and service to the world around us.

I hope that you will prayerfully consider being part of the many service opportunities on God’s Work Our Hands Sunday. This year the schedule will be slightly different. We will gather at 8am in our bright orange shirts and be blessed for a day of service, and we may head out from there. The 8am service will continue as usual for those unable to serve that day. Folks not helping with God’s Work Our Hands are welcome to worship at 8am or at 9:30am. At each worksite of the day, we will have a closing devotion to share together as we wrap up work there. The following Sunday – September 18th – we will see pictures of all the projects done and celebrate the work of God that we did with our hands. It will be a great way for all of Trinity to see the outreach, service and love that God continues to bless us with as we worship together. It will also be a day to share stories of your summer experiences and things you are looking forward to this coming year as we continue to live in the love and grace of God together as a community of faith. +peace, Pastor Jen

It is exciting to finally start my internship year at Trinity. I would like to start by thanking you all for the overwhelmingly generous hearts you have here at Trinity. I am so incredibly thankful for the items donated to fill my pantry, the gift cards I received, the cleaning of the vicarage, and the help moving in. It has truly been a blessing to have such caring and loving people here to help me transition into my role as vicar and to help me feel right at home. As many of you know, I am moving from Minnesota where I attend Luther Seminary. I have not traveled much around this part of the country, and I am looking forward to embarking on this new adventure with you. The life in this congregation spreads so much joy to all who come to Trinity, and I can’t wait to get involved with the ministries here. I feel very lucky to be a part of such a caring, welcoming, and active congregation. I am looking forward to getting to know you all during this internship year. Thank you again for your continuous hospitality of welcoming me into the congregation and the community.

-Vicar Sarah Dear Disciples of Trinity Lutheran Church, “My cup runneth over!” How else can I express to you my gratitude for the incredible year you offered to me as your intern/vicar. “My cup runneth over!” How else can I thank you for your very thoughtful and generous parting gifts to me on my last Sunday with you, and the opportunity to preach one last time. “My cup runneth over?” How else can I thank Dr. Darin Lewis and the choir ensemble who prepared my favorite anthem for the special music on my last Sunday - Bless the Lord, O My Soul by the Russian composer Ippolitof Ivanof, based on Psalm 103. On top of that, Darin wove the melody of that anthem into the music he played during the distribution of Holy Communion. What a gift! Our cups runneth over! because we are loved by an awesome God “who is gracious & plentious in mercy; who crowns us with loving kindness.” Oh bless the Lord, always. Grace and Peace, Bonnie Mary Oplinger, Vicar Emeritus

Men’s Fellowship will resume on a new night this fall. We will be meeting for dinner and fellowship on Tuesday nights at 6:00pm. Our first night will be Tuesday, September 6th. We would like to do some other fellowship trips, so come and learn more and give us your ideas. Plan to join us by signing up on the kiosk or by calling the church office to make a reservation. We are finished by 8pm.

Prayer & Healing Service On September 27th at 7:00pm, we will continue to gather for prayer and healing at Trinity. This service has received very positive feedback from all who have attended. We would like more of our Trinity family to consider taking the time to join us as we lift up in prayer the sick and those in need within our own lives, our community, and the world. The service includes Holy Communion with distribution by intinction at stations as we do on Saturday nights. This service is for all of us who are willing to pray for the needs of others.

Missing A Person? MAP IS for you!

September 13th at Noon MAP is an important ministry at Trinity. It is intended for anyone who has lost a spouse or another significant person in

their life. We come together with missing pieces to see if we can find wholeness together. We have about 15-20 people gathering monthly to be supportive of one another. Sign up on the kiosk or call the church office to make your reservation. We continue to bring healing and find wholeness…as we piece it all together.

In 2017, the church will celebrate its 100th Anniversary...and over this time, there have been thousands of pictures of taken! If you would like to help us sort through these pictures (and probably have a few good laughs along the way), please consider joining us this fall in the Social Hall during the Sunday School hour. If you can help or have any questions, please contact Neil Putt at 610-927-2374 or [email protected]. Thank You.

God’s Work - Our Hands Sunday, Sept. 11

We are planning to repeat God’s Work Our Hands Sunday on Sunday, September 11th. We have decided normal worship will happen at 8:00 & 9:30am for those who are unable to volunteer or serve. But, we hope most of our members will “be” the church that day. This has been an ELCA emphasis for three years.

We will begin the morning at 8:00am with a prayer send-off. Then at 8:15, those who are going out to serve in the community will leave. The rest will stay and finish worship. We will also have our regular 9:30am worship service. We will be collecting for health kits to be assembled at the church that morning. We will have different service projects for families and individuals to do together, everything from cleaning up yards, to spreading mulch, to clearing trails.

When you finish your project that morning, you will close with a simple devotion that will be led by your group. We will not return this year for a closing service. We will show the pictures of all of the service projects on Sept. 18th as the “offering that doesn’t fit into the plate”.

This will be a great day to celebrate what it means to live Christ’s love, and a great way to start off our fall together as the risen body of Christ. If you got a bright orange “God’s Work Our Hands t-Shirt last year, wear it this day. If you need a t-shirt, we will have some available. We’ll have something for everyone to do, old & young, all being Christ’s hands together. Sign-up sheets are in the narthex; get ready to be God’s hands at work!

Donations Needed We are collecting the following to assemble health kits for Lutheran World Relief. This will be one of the projects on Sept. 11th – God’s Work, Our Hands Sunday. The items that we need to collect for one kit: towels - between 20”x40” & 27”x52” (1 per kit – must be new) bar soap (2 per kit), sturdy comb (1 per kit) adult toothbrush (1 per kit) metal nail clipper (1 per kit)

We have a box in the collection center (stairwell) for these items. Thanks for your support!

Jack Frost Parade Date – Nov. 6th Be sure to save this date as plans are underway to make this parade bigger

and better. We already have the Mummers coming back as well as some of

the bag-pipers. If you are part of a group, club or organization, talk to them now about putting together a float or marching in the parade.

We will have the same parade route as last year, going west on 422, south on Church Street, and east on Ruth Street, ending at the church. We will stage the parade at the Conrad Weiser Middle School. We need more volunteers to help with the parade so watch for more details, but save the date now!

Raffle fundraiser for Jack Frost Parade & Scholarships

The church will again have a raffle to help fund the Jack Frost Parade and

Scholarships. Tickets will be $10 a piece or 3 for $25 (all purchased in the same name). First prize will be a $5,000 cash prize. The winner is responsible for all taxes. Second prize is $500 and third prize is $250, with an additional 10 people winning $100. The proceeds of the raffle will benefit the Jack Frost Parade, as well as the two Jack Frost Scholarships for a senior male and female student at Conrad Weiser ($2,500 each). Tickets are now on sale in the church office. If you are willing to sell tickets, we will sign them out to you.

The Jack Frost Parade is an incredible outreach opportunity for us at Trinity. We can show non-churched and churched families how we care for our community and demonstrate our love of families and youth. Parades cost a lot of money to bring in bands and attractions. So, we hope that you will purchase and sell raffle tickets. You must be 18 in order to purchase a ticket. Again, tickets are available now in the church office. We have purchased the required licenses from the state for this raffle.

Please consider taking ten tickets to sell to co-workers, neighbors and friends. Sign them out at the table in the Narthex or the church office. “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” —Nelson Mandela

September 18-23, 2016 Cost - $1,100.00 Money now due!

American Music Theatre-

Crooners & Kitchen Kettle Village October 6, 2016 Cost $85

This show celebrates the most popular and enduring songs from the 1920s through the 1950s along with recent hits from today’s modern, soulful musicians. It is a five-star musical journey, traveling from the legendary evenings when classic crooners owned the radio, to today, when the soothing sounds of our contemporary crooners still help us to escape our stresses and soothe our spirits. We will have two hours to shop at Kitchen Kettle Village in the morning before we enjoy our delicious pot roast and turkey family-style meal at the Fulton Steamboat Inn. We leave at 9:00am and are back by 6:00pm.

Christmas Trip American Music Theatre & Hotel Hershey

Dec. 1st - Cost $95.00 Well, after three years we finally had to increase the cost. It is the same great trip, Chocolate World, Hotel Hershey for their wonderful lunch buffet, then down to Lancaster for the American Music Theatre Christmas Show. We will have two buses, but sign-up early to ensure you get to go as we had some disappointed people this past year!

Rally Day and the Jehoiada Chest

Every year we designate a special collection for a specific project usually related to the building. This goes back to the Old Testament and the temple high priest, Jehoiada, who wanted a special collection taken to repair the temple. This year’s funds will go toward a new baby grand piano for the sanctuary.

Last month we said new parlor furniture, and while that is still a need, the piano for worship takes precedence. The piano that was purchased in memory of Ruth Ann Rissinger, our former organist and choir director, was sold to us as a piano that would stand up to our needs, but it has not. It has had an issue with holding its tuning. Our piano tuner has made some recommendations, and we hope to trade in this piano for a new one which could cost between $20-30,000. So, your generosity will be appreciated. We would like to have the equipment necessary for our music program to excel. The new piano will continue to be in memory of Ruth Ann Rissinger.

Special coin banks are available in the narthex, or you can just use the envelope marked “Rally Day” this fall. This special offering will be collected on Rally Day on October 15th & 16th, but you can start saving now by using the banks. Thanks for helping to make this project a success, and enabling our music program to build and grow.

New Social Hall Tables We would like to purchase some new round social hall tables. These round tables will help to facilitate better fellowship as conversations can occur more easily with better eye contact. We will need a total of 20 tables. The tables cost $375 each. We will be purchasing Mity-Lite tables, the same company who made our present social hall tables. They are light weight and easy to move, yet sturdy and durable. The tables in the social hall are now about 20 years old. We replaced the chairs a few years back and now we would like to replace the tables.

Please consider sponsoring a table or a ½ table to help us meet the need and update these tables. We still need the old tables for food pantry, and some will be used downstairs in classrooms, replacing even older tables. Thanks for your generosity & assistance in meeting this need. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Breakfast Bible Study We begin again on Monday, Sept. 12th in the social hall. This year, we will study the Bible readings that we heard the previous Sunday. All of us will be able to share in a breakfast buffet. We collect a free-will offering for breakfast. In a world in which so many are struggling with faith issues, wouldn’t it be good to find comfort and direction from God’s Word? Come enjoy some fellowship and the study of God’s Word. Make this the year you spend some extra time growing in your knowledge of the Bible. It all begins at 8:30am, and we finish by 10am.

Trinity, Sunday School & YOU…The Perfect Fit!

Sunday School Begins

September 18th!

All children & parents…Join us on Sunday, September 18th! We’ll begin in the sanctuary at 9:15am. Find your teachers, connect with your friends and sing some fun songs. Then we’ll head downstairs to check out classrooms, do some fun get-to-know you games and create some great art to decorate the church. Parents are encouraged to join their children this day and check-it out.

As always, Sunday School could not happen without our wonderful, willing teachers. And you can be one of them! Sunday School teachers are SO very important in a child’s life… the only requirement is a love for children and the desire to help guide them in their Faith Journey.

We need volunteers to come and spend an hour with Trinity’s children. We try to plan for 2-3 teachers in each classroom which allows for flexible schedules. We also need people to help sub on occasion. We really need volunteers to cover the nursery during the Sunday School hour. Volunteers would be scheduled on a rotating basis…the more volunteers the fewer Sundays you need to cover! Sign up on the kiosk or see Chris Kennedy if you can help out! It’s OK to get sticky! Join us for sticky buns, too! What a great way to kick-off our fall at Trinity!

We Need Basket Holders! Is your child in Kindergarten through 2nd Grade? They can help at the late

worship service by being a basket holder during communion! See Chris

Kennedy if interested on getting on the schedule! On the job training is included!

Adult Sunday School! We have a great set of classes to choose from starting at various times this fall…read on and I hope we didn’t make it too hard to choose! All adult classes happen downstairs. Come grab a sticky bun

on September 18th and info on upcoming classes! Also, CHECK OUT THE LOBBY EACH SUNDAY MORNING… there will be a reminder of which classes are offered and where. JOIN US!

CLASS BEGINS Sept. 25th! ***********************************************************************************************************************************************************************

Josh Mountz-Fearless Conversations Everyone will feel free to question, explore and grow in faith with such series titles as: “Why is Grace So Amazing?” and “Is God in Control of My Life?” You will be guided through lessons that are saturated with Bible insights! Trinity’s Can you believe it’s that time of year?! 5th Quarter continues to be a strong, vibrant ministry here at Trinity, as we reach out to meet the needs of the high school youth of our community.

Last year, we averaged 400 youth per event during football season! How can the youth go wrong with free food, free live music, & lots of friends? The events run from 9 to 11pm. These events are successful because of YOU, the willing volunteers that give of their time, money & donations to make these events so important to our youth.

Once again, all our Friday football dates will take place at the high school. The current schedule is:

9/16, 23, 30 and 10/14, 28

Mark your calendars and let us know how you can help…SIGN UP ON THE KIOSK! WE NEED CHAPERONES - AND ALL CHAPERONES MUST HAVE THEIR CLEARANCES

We always need lots of supplies, too. We go through as many as 70 pizzas a night…often use over 50 2-liter bottles of soda…many, many trays of cookies & brownies, lots of snacks…and we need 20+ chaperones per event! We hope you will continue to help us create a fun, SAFE place for our youth to hang-out. Please sign up on the kiosk. If you want to make a cash donation, just drop it in the offering plate & mark it 5th Quarter. Thank you very much for your support.

Financial Update At this point in time we have encountered the usual summer slump and find ourselves behind by about $5,000. This is not bad as July was a three pay month with salaries being one of our biggest expenses. Simply Giving continues to be a blessing to us, and we thank all of our Simply Givers whose regular giving sustains the church during the summer months. We thank all who are actively contributing to allow the ministries of this place to flourish, and for the Gospel message to be lived out in so many ways.

Thank you for your continued giving back to God for all the blessings God has bestowed upon you. Thank you for being good stewards, understanding our need to pass on to others the Good News we have experienced firsthand in God’s forgiveness and grace. Thank you for allowing us to touch the lives of children in VBS and Music Camp. Thank you for the ongoing ministries that support our members and non-members, helping them to experience the love of Christ in real and visible ways. Thank you for sharing your blessings, and please help us to continue to grow the church God has given us!
