The Wisdom of God at Work in Each Moment

As the dramatic encounter between Jesus, his fellow townspeople , and relatives at the synagogue in Nazareth draws to a close, we hear that the people were so filled with fury that they drove him to the brow of the hill… intending to hurl him over the edge. You see, I don’t think it was the people who pushed Jesus to the edge - I believe it was Jesus who pushed them to the edge. I know people tend to be fickle, and we often change our minds, but what could have happened in the few moments that passed between everyone favorably about Jesus and marveling at the appealing discourse flowing from his lips and then the sudden urge to bounce him out of their lives? I believe the answer lies in the fact that Jesus pushed townspeople to the edge the moment he began saying that it was not “someone else” who is blind, or lame, or trapped, or poor, or in need of

changing their ways. They were the ones who needed to change. It seems to me that the townspeople imagined they had Jesus all figured out; they imagined they had Jesus and his message under control: they imagined they knew exactly how God worked

with people. They believed they were in the middle of Jesus and God’s plan, wrapping it up in a nice, neat package, and then Jesus disrupted their imaginings, and he pushed them to the edge of what they believed - and it threatened them and filled them with fury. If we really listen to Jesus’ preaching, his words and, more importantly, his actions, I believe we will eventually be pushed to the edge of what we believe. But not with the intention of hurling us into guilt, or despair, or fear, but with the intention of helping us again a new perspective, with the intention of allowing us to see others and ourselves from God’s point of view. Our scripture from Jeremiah underscores the Lord’s intentions in pushing us to the edge: it is out of unparalleled love. “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you, before you were born, I dedicated you.” St. Paul, in his First Letter to the Corinthians, the much-proclaimed wedding liturgy passage, alludes to why we may not always understand what the Lord is doing when we are taken to the edge as an opportunity for new growth. “At present we see indistinctly; we know partially.” Often, caught up in the middle of life’s challenges and prodded to become more mature in faith and life, we have a difficult time comprehending the wisdom of God at work in those moments. But in the end, we are invited to trust in God’s unfathomable love for us, the only love that never fails.

God Bless Us!

February 8: Annual Day of Prayer and Awareness The Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace and the International Union of Superiors General has designated February 8 as an Annual Day of Prayer and Awareness Against Human Trafficking. February 8 is the feast day of St. Josephine Bakhita, who was kidnapped as a child and sold into slavery in Sudan and Italy. Once Josephine was freed, she became a Canossian nun and dedicated her life to sharing her testament of deliverance from slavery and comforting the poor and suffering. She was declared a Saint in 2000.

1959 - JUBILEE YEAR - 2019

Ground was broken for the expansion of the church and social hall on August 2, 1981, which now seats over 200 people, and was blessed and dedicated by Bishop W. Thomas Larkin on August 15, 1982. The southern boundary was changed to Madison Avenue, Progress Boulevard, and West Bloomingdale Avenue from the extension of Providence Road to Hillsborough Bay with the establishment of Resurrection Mission in Riverview in 1984.

Born wealthy, the son of the military leader Miki Handayu. Paul felt a call to religous life from his youth. Jesuit in 1580, educated at the Jesuit college at Azuchi and Takatsuki. Successful evangelist. When the political climate became hostile to Christianity, he decided to continue his ministry, was soon arrested. On his way to martydom, he and other imprisoned Christians were marched 600 miles so they could be abused by, and be a lesson to, their countrymen; they sang the Te Deum on the way. His last sermon was delivered from the cross. One of the Martyrs of Nagasaki.

Liturgical Day: February 6

Fin de Semana de Educación As you receive your personal invitation from Bishop Parkes for participation in the 2019 Annual Pastoral Appeal, remember that APA not only assists our parish in fulfilling our commitment to the ministries, programs, and services of our larger Church, but also helps to provide the physical, educational, and spiritual needs of thousands that we could not serve from our parish alone. Your pledge or gift to APA on behalf of our parish funds these services that are essential to advance the mission of Christ and help those in need. Our parish commitment weekend is in two weeks. While reflecting on your own blessings, consider how you can bring the joy of Jesus Christ to someone in need.
