A letter from the Pastor My dear People at Blessed Seelos Parish: In the Gospel today we have a very special teaching from the Lord Jesus related to what is called “fraternal correction.” This is the admonishing of one’s neighbor by a private individual with the purpose of helping that person. This is clearly distinguishable from an official disciplining, whose mouthpiece is a judge or other like superior, whose object is the punishment of one found to be guilty. The need and obligation of a Christian to offer fraternal correction comes from the natural law binding force of love that we must exhibit for everyone. Therefore, the Lord Jesus is telling us that if we see a brother or a sister who needs to be helped along the way to holiness, and who we see or experience to be in serious sin, we are called in love and charity to approach that brother or sister with words of correction and encouragement. The way we prepare to do this is critical since we are not doing this in a critical way but in a helpful way. So much of the corrections we make are no corrections at all, since they don’t impact the person in need of correction. Even a well-intentioned criticism fails to abide by the teaching of Jesus, not to mention pure gossip and negative criticism. Jesus did not come in the flesh as a judge but as a helper to us and as someone inviting us to a better life. Let us do the same! Fr./P. José Ignacio
