Words of Welcome — The Future Begins Here

Dear Students and Parents/Guardians:

We are pleased and honoured to welcome students and their families to Blessed Cardinal Newman Catholic High School.

Blessed Cardinal Newman is named for the famous 19th century English convert to Catholicism, John Henry Newman. An accomplished author and founder of what came to be known as the Oxford movement, Newman’s efforts and ex-ample won many converts to the church.

Blessed Cardinal Newman is located on a magnificent 45 acre campus over-looking the Scarborough Bluffs and Lake Ontario, a site shared with St.

Augustine’s Seminary. Unlike traditional Catholic schools founded by religious orders, Blessed Cardinal Newman opened in the fall of 1973 entirely staffed by lay Catholic teachers. Newman was one of two high schools in the system to pilot an integration program for students with special needs. We were among the first schools within the Toronto Catholic District School Board to introduce programs ranging from peer counselling and mediation to electronic keyboarding and communications technology. Our school was profiled in a video produced by the Ontario Catholic School Trustees’ Association in the 1990s for our exemplary work in developing programs that integrate Catholic values and teachings into the curriculum. We are proud that innovation is a part of our tradition at Newman. Blessed Cardinal Newman continues to thrive because of its tradition of providing a caring educational, social and spiritual environment for our students.

We, at Blessed Cardinal Newman Catholic High School, are committed to making a difference in the lives of our students. We are a community that celebrates the unique gifts of every student. We are dedicated to develop-ing the whole person — intellectually, physically, socially, emotionally and spiritually. Our programs and activities create an environment that enables students to grow in faith and truth. We believe that individual growth fosters a reverence for life that empowers students to heed the Christian call to a life of service. We encourage young people to embrace the values of Jesus Christ and to participate, with the grace of the Holy Spirit in establishing the Kingdom of God.

Blessed Cardinal Newman enjoys a long standing reputation for excellence in Academics, the Arts and Athletics with an emphasis on service, community building and gospel values. Within our regular program, the unique needs of every student are supported through: • Enriched Courses, Advanced Placement, Extended French, ESL, Fast Forward Sports Program and Gifted Programs; • Challenging and active Technological Studies and Science programs; • A tradition of excellence in the Arts including, Drama, Music and Visual Arts; • An extensive spirited Athletic program; • Cooperative Education opportunities including the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP); • Resource support and individualized education planning with an emphasis on student success; • Vibrant student leadership initiatives through our Chaplaincy Department, Student Council and Athletic Association including: Grade 9 Summer School Transition Program, Navigating Newman, Grade 9 Camp Tawingo, Camp Olympia, Peer Helping, Grade 9 Mentorship, and many other community outreach opportunities. “ Growing In Faith & Truth ”~ Our School Motto

The Catholic Vision

Our Catholic vision at Blessed Cardinal Newman is rooted in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is infused in not only our religious education classes, but also in our entire curriculum and in all aspects of our community life. We believe in building a Christ-centred community of service to one another and in transforming the world through Catholic education. Throughout the school year, we provide many opportunities to live out our Gospel values, to develop our God-given gifts, and to put our faith into action. It is through school-wide activities including Christmas food baskets, Scar Trek and Respect for Life week that we inspire our students to live fully and to serve God by serving one another. We celebrate and witness our faith through meaningful daily prayer, our monthly celebration of the Eucharist, and through acts of social justice.

In a world transformed by globalization, and technological innovation, we believe that faith-based education will provide our students with the necessary foundation to become discerning, life-long learners, as they engage individually and collaboratively to become critical-thinkingglobal citizens. At Blessed Cardinal Newman, we answer the call to a faith-filled life of witness inspired by the love of our Father, the faith in Jesus Christ, and the hope from the Holy Spirit. Our staff, in partner-ship with parents and parishes, help to guide and inspire our students to become mature, caring and responsible citizens who exemplify our Catholic School Graduate Expectations.

2 - Words of Welcome/The Catholic Vision

Words of Welcome (cont.)

What really brings the school to life, are the multitude of co-curricular programs, which are a vital component of a student’s well-rounded development. Our student services department has developed peer counselling and peer tutoring programs to serve all students in the community and to promote their personal and interpersonal growth. We have a well-developed sports program with competitive league teams ranging from rugby to racquet sports and an intramural program open to all interested students. Our clubs cater to every interest from photography and chess to snowboarding and dragon boat racing. A strong tradition of involvement within the arts has been nurtured over the years. Art shows provide a showcase for our visual arts students, annual concerts provide a forum for our musical ensemble and choirs, and our drama club’s work over the years has encompassed everything from Broadway musicals to serious theatre. The variety of co-curricular activities offer all students the opportu-nity to explore individual talents, to develop skills, and to enrich the entire community.

Our mission statement shows our commitment to the intellectual, spiritual, physical, emotional and social development of our students, and to a fully inclusive model of education that is grounded in Gospel values. Common attitudes, values and beliefs bind our community and ultimately have a positive effect on the quality of life enjoyed by both teachers and students.

Supports for Students

Resource Services – A Full Inclusion ModelThe Blessed Cardinal Newman Mission statement indicates that as a community we are dedicated to the development of the whole person – intellectually, physically, socially, emotionally and spiritually. Embracing the tenants of our mission, the resource staff offer a range of supportthat strives to ensure success for those students who are formally identified through an IPRC, as well as students who have received support in the past. Accommoda-tions provided are based on IPRC summaries, exchange of information meetings and IEP’s created with parental consultation. Assisting students is a collaborative effort of teachers, administrators, child and youth workers, guidance counsellors, educational assistants, peer helpers and parents, all working towards maximizing each student’s potential.

Student Services – Support Leading To SuccessBlessed Cardinal Newman has an outstanding Student Services Department. There are 6 dedicated staff members including counsellors, a youth worker, and a secretary. The staff looks forward to meeting with students and their families in order to ensure a positive, enjoyable high school experience. Department members are available to support students in course selection, to provide informative workshops on graduation requirements, post-secondary planning, scholarship opportunities and career exploration. Counsellors act as liaison on behalf of students offering them assistance and support with peers, classes, workload, and personal issues.

Library Information CentreBlessed Cardinal Newman Library is a thriving and active hub, vital to the life of our school’s community. One of our library goals is to teach students to find and use information from a wide variety of sources – print, non-print and electronic media. Information literacy is defined as “the ability to solve information-based problems: acquire, critically evaluate, select, use, create and communicate information in ways which lead to knowledge and wisdom”. Chaplaincy is therefore … • a ministry of presence – touching and being touched by people’s lives. • a ministry of listening – hearing the stories of students and staff and affirming their worth. • a ministry of healing – bringing compassion and care to those who are suffering. • a ministry of liberation – helping others to free themselves from personal and communal oppression. • a ministry of celebration – acknowledging joyfully in word and sacrament, the presence of God in our lives.

Information Studies, 1999 document). In order to succeed in a constantly changing technological world, students must be information literate. Students should be able to locate, critically examine and use information to solve problems; therefore, the mandate of our school library is to seek to provide, organize and disseminate resources which support the school curriculum and the students’ interests. Blessed Cardinal Newman Library provides access to over 8,000 books, encyclopedias, news-papers, magazines, etc. and databases. Another important goal of our school library is to encourage the enjoyment of books, both for learning and for leisure reading. Over the years, the library has spearheaded the “STAR” (Stop Talking and Read) pro-gram, a silent reading pause throughout our entire school community; the library has hosted many published authors and journalists; the library has also promoted White Pine books and our students have participated in the Harbourfront’s Forest of Read-ing; Student Vote and liaised with the Toronto Public Library. Inevitably, the stu-dents come away from these experiences with a renewed appreciation for language and literary works. Blessed Cardinal Newman Library continues to play an integral role in the successes and academic achievements of our students.

ChaplaincyThe Chaplaincy program at Blessed Cardinal Newman provides all staff and students with opportunities to grow in their Catholic faith through experiences of prayer, the Sacraments, and social action.

At the heart of our vocation resonate the words of Blessed Cardinal John Henry Newman:

“God has created me to do Him some definite service. He has committed some work to me which He has not committed to another. I have my mission. I am a link in a chain, a bond of connection between persons.”

As a Catholic community, we are called to be witnesses to the Catholic social teaching by promoting equality, democracy, and solidarity for a just, peaceful and compassion-ate society. In a world marked by poverty, oppression and war, we are commanded to work for justice and peace.

The Arts

Our Arts Program begins in grade nine with a general introduction to drama, music and visual art and progresses into a series of special focus courses. The world of today is rapidly changing, reflecting new realities in all human endeavours. Experience in the Arts will be valuable for college and university entrance whatever the intended field of study. Institutions of higher learning are looking for well rounded students. Arts education engages the imagination, fosters thinking, develops disciplined effort and builds self confidence.

Visual ArtsOur visual arts department offers a curriculum that incorporates a wide range of activities including drawing, painting, sculpture, print-making and mixed media. Live studio drawing and trips to various art galleries enhance the classroom experience. Studio assignments are supported through art historically and placed into a contempo-rary context. Student artwork is constantly on display throughout the school during the entire year. However it figures prominently at our Talent Night, Christmas Concert, Holocaust remembrance week and Liturgies. We are very proud of our students’ work and their contribution to the cultural life of the school.

MusicOur music program offers students a varied and rich curriculum through band, keyboarding and vocal. Students learn performingskills on traditional band instruments and piano keyboards while learning how to record music on computers. With two equipped midi labs our students record and produce their own compact disks. Students have an opportunity to further enhance these skills learned in class through a variety of extra-curricular activities such as concert band, stage band, choir and small ensembles. These groups enrich our community by performing in the school and across the city at various music festivals and concerts.

DramaOur drama program offers a rich environment for learning and growth through performance, collaboration and teamwork. The drama curriculum is comprehensive; classes are offered from grades nine through twelve in which students will learn improvisation, acting technique, creative move-ment, play production, playwriting and technical theatre. Our drama program has a long and respected tradition of producing theatre with the highest production values; offering first rate entertainment to the school and local community. Recent research shows that drama students “acquire essential experience in teambuilding, entrepreneurship and problem solving; vital skills in any successful venture”. (Professionally Speaking, June 2006)

were going to be really hard and impossible, but with a little extra work I ended up with two university credits. I don’t have to take two electives nor have to worry about course overload. Instead, I have more free time which can be given to other courses.” Christina Lynch, 2010 BCN Graduate, Queens University

16 - Blessed Cardinal Newman Reflection

Cardinal John Henry NewmanBeatified September 19th, 2010

Celebrated at Cardinal Newman High Schoolon September 22nd, 2010

by His Grace Archbishop Thomas Collins

Cardinal Thomas Collins and JoanTschernow, Principal BCNHS

Reflection on Blessed Cardinal NewmanBlessed Cardinal Newman, a man of deep and abiding faith, stood out in qualities of authenticity and honesty. They were evident in all aspects of his life, including his relationships with others, the choices he made and the values that shaped his life.

Newman was a shy man, but with a huge heart – a heart able to relate to others and to form deep and close friendships. His personal motto cor ad cor loquitur (heart speaks to heart) indicates nothing superficial about Newman in his relationship to others. He valued people for who they were,

without judgment or expectation. Although every inch an academic, it was from his heart that he would look at others and love them.

With his passion for seeking the truth, he was committed to the value of education. He was known for his confidence in the potential of young people and in the ability of students to ask the right questions concerning faith, life, and human relationships. As we are all created in the image of God, Newman also believed that we are created to search out and discover what really gives truth and meaning to our lives. Such was the value of education for Newman. He saw it as an excellent window to discovering the truth about God and of our own place in the world.

As a young man Newman struggled with many of the same questions we ask today - questions of love and relationship, what to believe, finding one’s direction in life. Passionate in his desire to understand the truth, he was not afraid to confront both questions and doubt within himself. This meant at the same time often challenging popular assumptions and certainties of the day which sometimes did not win him many friends! But such courage enabled him to grow in personal faith and with a much greater sense and knowledge of who he was and where he wanted to be.

Newman valued also the importance of one’s conscience in helping to know and un-derstand the questions and difficulties of the heart. He believed that it was by listen-ing to the inner voice of conscience, the voice of God within us, that we can become what God intends us to be: authentic, happy and people of integrity who in turn can influence, help and inspire others to be the same.

May Blessed Cardinal Newman pray for us and our school that we may grow in faith and always pursue with courage the truth in our hearts. May our school be a place of grace, a place where we may grow in knowledge, faith and love – a place where “heart speaks to heart”. — By Chris Rae, BCN Religion Dept.
