Cum Laude Noreen van der LindenOn January 19, Noreen van der Linden from the Central Diagnostic Laboratory defended her PhD thesis andreceived the judicium cum laude.

Noreen's thesis is entitled: “Cardiac troponins: State of the (He)Art: towards optimization of interpretation.”Promotors: Prof. Marja van Dieijen Visser and Prof. Luc van Loon; copromotor: Dr Steven J.R. Meex.

Her thesis addressed the release of cardiac troponin and its subsequent clearance from the circulation in healthyindividuals, and those with renal disease. Her studies challenge conventional wisdom and suggest that elevatedcardiac troponin concentrations in patients with chronic kidney disease are due an increase in the release ofcardiac troponin and active myocardial injury, rather than a consequence of impaired filtration and clearance. Also, a novel diagnostic algorithm to improve rule out of acute myocardial infarction in patients with chest pain atthe cardiac emergency unit was proposed.

Translational trendsEffectivity tailored compression therapy The majority of patients with thrombosis of the leg are instructed to wear uncomfortable elasticcompression stockings for an unnecessary long time. Irritating but also not cost effective. Patients with thrombosis of the leg are now advised to wear elastic compression stockings for a 2-yearstandard duration. Six months will however be sufficient for 50% of patients, and as many as 60% ofpatients can stop treatment after one year. These were the findings of a new study from the MaastrichtUMC+ sponsored by ZonMw and recently published in Lancet Haematology. Each year 25 thousand people in the Netherlands are diagnosed with deep venous thrombosis of the leg:a swollen, red leg that is sometimes so painful that it is hard to walk or even stand. The cause is athrombus in a vein blocking the venous flow. When this thrombus dislodges and migrates to the lungs, itmay be fatal. Most patients recover quickly once anticoagulant treatment is started, but to preventcomplications such as chronic pain, swelling, itching and paresthesia known as post thrombotic syndrome(PTS) patients are instructed to wear elastic compression stockings for two years. The compressionstocking counteracts the increased pressure caused by the thrombus and results in better flow of theblood. Often patients experience the elastic compression stocking as to tight or to warm. To investigate whetherthe duration of treatment could be shortened the IDEAL DVT was executed in 14 hospitals in theNetherlands and Italy, and 865 patients participated. During the study one half of patients were instructedto wear the stockings for two years and the other half were allowed to remove the stocking as soon asthey were without complaints. The yearly costs of stocking therapy are estimated at 23,5 million euros. Partly formed by the costs ofelastic stockings – 100 euros per patient per year – but more importantly by the homecare costs formedby almost 2000 patients in need of daily assistance with applying and removing the stocking. If half of allpatients would stop treatment after one year, than 10 million euros could be saved on a yearly basis. The Maastricht UMC+ has already changed their protocols and no longer uses standard duration of 2years but uses individualised duration compression therapy.

Who's New?!

I was born in Pakistan which is also where I completed my Bachelors inComputer Systems Engineering. In pursuit of higher education, I moved toAachen, Germany and completed my Masters in Biomedical Engineering fromRWTH Aachen .For my master thesis I worked at Varian Medical Systems inBaden, Switzerland. There I developed a tool that could be used to assess theimage quality of CT scans. The tool allowed the flexibility to assess differentimage quality metrics from different areas of a scan in a single reconstruction. Tofurther develop myself in medical imaging, I applied for a PhD position at CARIM(Department of Radiology), under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Eline Kooi, myresearch here is focused on the development of imaging techniques for theassessment of developing and under treatment vulnerable plaque in carotid andcoronary arteries using state of the art noninvasive imaging such assimultaneous PET/MRI and CT.

Nicolò Mangraviti was born on July 30, 1992 in Messina (Italy). Interested inmolecular biology he attended and achieved the Master degree at SapienzaUniversity of Rome in Genetic and Molecular Biology In basic and biomedicalresearch in January 2017. During the last year of his Master's, he performed hisinternship at the laboratory RNA of editing at the Children Hospital Bambino Gesùof Rome, under the supervision of Dr. Angela Gallo and Prof Alessandro Fatica Inthis period, he focused his attention on the activity of RNA editing by ADAR’sfamily in Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM). In January 2017 he started working as aresearch fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Angela Gallo continuing his thesis projectand starting to study in small part LncRNA edited in GBM and Brain and haveacquire a good background in RNA biology especially RNA editing LncRNA andmicroRNA. Nicolò will join Maastricht University as a PhD student under thesupervision of Prof. Leon de Windt. The focus of our research is evaluate theinfluence of LncRNA and microRNA in human cardiovascular Disease in particular focus on. An unbiasedlocked nucleic acid (LNA) based silencing screen of the genome content of microRNA (miRNA) genesinvolved in agonist-induced cardiomyocyte hypertrophy.

My name is Kim Maasen and I obtained my Masters in Nutrition and Health atWageningen University (with a specialisation in Molecular Nutrition). Aftergraduating in 2016, I worked for a year as a research assistant for the MedicalResearch Council. During my PhD I will be looking at the role of dietary dicarbonyls(pre-AGEs) in chronic diseases. For this we will compile a dietary dicarbonyldatabase of food products, which will be used to investigate the relationbetween dietary dicarbonyl intake, circulating and tissue AGEs and cardiovascularoutcomes in CODAM and The Maastricht study.

Kick-off meeting atherothrombosis platform On January 30, the kick-off meeting of the atherothrombosis platform took place. After a life-cooking lunch,CARIM staff members presented their current research and future plans on atherothrombosis. Marjo Donners,Uli Schotten and Hugo ten Cate provided a nice overview on atherosclerosis, thrombosis, and the interactionbetween atrial fibrillation, thrombosis and atherosclerosis. The fifteen presenters of the pitches did a great job inshowing the highlights of their research in only 6 minutes, so that a broad overview of atherotrombosis researchwithin CARIM could be obtained in one afternoon. The organisers would like to thank all the speakers for theirinspiring presentations and the attendees for their contribution to a lively discussion. The kick-off meeting will befollowed-up by a strategic meeting that takes place on the 7th of February from 1600-18:00 h, Wellenszaal,MUMC+. All CARIM staff members that are interested in participation to the atherothrombosis platform arewelcome. More information can be obtained via Eline Kooi, Henri Spronk, or Erik Biessen.
