Season’s Greetings

Health Partners Offers Season’sBest Gift for Kids

While many search the malls for the perfect gift for their children, Health

Partners points out that the most important gift is ensuring that children have

health care and other essentials when they need it. To help, the health plan, which

serves over 170,000 Medical Assistance and CHIP members in the Greater

Philadelphia region, recently hosted a party at its Center City headquarters with

information about health coverage, food assistance and other services.

“Our Holiday Wellness party is a fun event with some important messages,”

says Leyla Moreno, supervisor, community relations, Health Partners. “It’s a

way for us to remind children and teens to stay healthy by visiting their doctors

for well checkups each year. It also allows us to let parents know that compre-

hensive health insurance is available to most kids, often for free, through CHIP

programs such as our KidzPartners plan.”

RadioOne kicked off the celebration, which included a health and resource

fair with information and giveaways from KidzPartners, the Philadelphia

Chinatown Development Corporation and the Greater Philadelphia Coalition

Against Hunger. Christmas Carolers helped usher in the holiday spirit, while

attendees also enjoyed warm apple cider, face painting and a special appearance

and a keepsake photo with Santa Roo, Health Partners’ kangaroo mascot.

As part of its ongoing Body Mass Index (BMI) screening campaign, Health

Partners provided over 80 BMI screenings and gave its 25th anniversary I

KNOW (my BMI) T-shirt to everyone who participated. In addition, over 80

Health Partners members who provided proof of a recent pediatric well visit or

lead screening, both vital for children’s health, received a gift card to Villa urban

fashion stores.

African American Chamber launchesminority business site

Advocates say they hear plenty of excuses when it comes to not supporting

black-owned businesses, from not being able to find one to having had a bad

experience in the past.

The African American Chamber of Commerce hopes to put an end to the

excuses with the unveiling of Reverse 90.com. The site showcases places to

eat, shop and secure a range of other services from black-owned firms in

Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.

The Chamber’s Reverse 90 campaign, launched over the summer, is aimed

at turning around the dismal support for black businesses. The effort gets its

name from research showing that 10 percent of money spent by blacks support

black-owned businesses. For more information www.reverse90.com

PRESIDENT'S HOUSE SITE NEARSCOMPLETION, PREPS FOR OPENING

Ribbon Cutting and Kickoff Event Planned for December 15

From 1790 to 1800, when the city of Philadelphia was our new nation’scapital, Presidents George Washington and John Adams lived and worked in amansion – the President’s House – that stood roughly one block north ofIndependence Hall. In that house, the first two American presidents literallyinvented what it meant to be Chief Executive of the United States.

The mansion also held a profoundly disturbing truth. It has been documentedthat George Washington, who owned over 300 enslaved Africans at his MountVernon home, brought at least nine of these servants to Philadelphia to live andwork in the President’s House. This fact creates a challenge to the notion ofAmerican liberty; while the founders of our country declared “all men arecreated equal,” the brutal institution of slavery was still being cultivated andmaintained. It was in this very house that George Washington signed thenotorious Fugitive Slave Act of 1793.

The presidential mansion is replete with stories of both achievement andinfamy – the birth of a free nation and its tenacious first steps, co-existing withwidely practiced, indefensible enslavement of human beings. It is worth notingthat John Adams was not himself a slave owner, and his wife Abigail was anoutspoken critic of slavery.

Ultimately, President’s House: Freedom and Slavery in Making a New Nationis designed with a dual purpose. The site indeed commemorates thelocation and importance of the original executive mansion of George Washingtonand John Adams – key architects of American democracy. It also tells the long-obscured story of the enslaved Africans who toiled at the house, two of whommade a remarkable escape to freedom during Washington’s presidency.

Moreover, we have a compelling obligation as a nation to illuminate thehistory of this house and all its inhabitants – willing and unwilling – to thefullest. What better place to tell these fascinating stories but in the IndependenceMall footprint, at the very threshold of the Liberty Bell? "Visitors will learn a lot

of thought-provoking new information as they tour the President's Housefootprint," said Roz McPherson. "We are hopeful that this site will serve as thecatalyst in seeking more information about the obscure lives of the people whowere such a significant part of the nation's past and that visitors will have anexpanded context for reviewing early American history."

Plans for the ribbon cutting event are being managed by the Office of theCity Representative. Support for this important milestone in the project is alsobeing provided by Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation. Inaddition to signaling the official opening of President's House: Freedom andSlavery in Making a New Nation, the ribbon cutting also marks the day the sitewill transition to ownership by Independence National Historical Park.
