CRISES come in all shapes and sizes,

ranging from the slightly chaotic1 to

potentially catastrophic.2 No matter the degree

of their intensity, however, these critical periods

are all unwanted, troublesome and difficult to

handle. Everyone needs help and advice

during such turmoil.3 Here are some tips to

be aware of in the event of a crisis.

Managing Your Way through a Crisis

crisis management team and what their

specific duties are.

Don’t Pretend the Problem Will Simply Go Away

While it’s tempting to flee from the trouble

and hope it runs its course† quickly, this

approach will likely make matters worse.

Instead, it’s best to face the problem head-

on.6 In addition, don’t hide from the media or

give them “no comment” all the time; tell them

you are aware of the problem and are doing

everything you can to fix it.

Get Expert Help if You Need It

Sometimes, an emergency is just too big

for you to tackle7 by yourself. Seek out

professionals who can help you manage the

crisis, yet still protect your confidentiality.

Don’t Lie

You’ve probably seen movies where an “evil

corporation” tells lie after lie to mislead8 the

public. Ultimately, though, the falsehoods9 are

uncovered and hurt the company. That also

happens in real life. Just as your parents told you,

“honesty is the best policy.”

Throw Speculation10 out the Window†

Communication is vital during a crisis, but

stick to the facts. Don’t put your foot in your

mouth† by guessing out loud. Speculating is not

as bad as lying, but it can still come back to

haunt11 you.

Prevent It from Happening in the First Place

It’s almost always easier and less costly12 to

try to prevent a major problem from happening

than it is to solve it once it’s occurred. How can

you prevent disaster from emerging? The key is

to anticipate what can go wrong and then have

procedures in place to fix the problem quickly,

which brings us back to the first point of this

article: “Have a Game Plan Already in Place.”

As you can see, there are effective

methods available to help manage a crisis.

Follow the advice above when tackling your

next emergency. Or, better yet, use the tips

to prevent a crisis from occurring at all.

ONE of the winners of the New7Wonders of

Nature competition, Korea’s Jeju Island lives

up to† its reputation. My first stop was Cheonjiyeon

Waterfall, a three-tier waterfall where great

cataractsh of water thunder1 down from above.

Nearby is the Seonimgyo Bridge, decorated with

carvings of seven nymphsh from a Korean legend.

At the Fountain of Five Blessings, tourists can

make a wish by throwing coins into a

sculpture of a money bag.

Arriving at Seongeup Folk Village

for our next stop, we were received

by dol hareubangs, patronh gods with

hats and big, round eyes. The local

residences are modest, with thatchedh roofs and

stone walls. The wind-breaking village walls built

of black lavah rock and the narrow alleys are other

unique features of the place.

Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak is a can’t-miss spot

in Jeju. We climbed this 182-meter-high volcano

rock during the rapeseedh season. The beauty of

the sea of yellow flowers set against verdanth hills

and crystal blue ocean was overwhelming.

In the north of the island is Yongduam Rock, or

Dragon Head Rock in English. The name derives2

from the rock’s supposed resemblance3 to

the head of the mythical creature. The rock was

formed by wind and sea erosion,h though a local

legend says it came into being when a dragon was

shot down with an arrow and landed

in the sea. Head up, gaping at the sky

from whence4 it came, the dragon

now howls on the shore of a rough

and tumbling sea.

Jeju Island boasts scenery that

changes with the seasons: beautiful flowers in

spring, shimmering5 ocean views in summer, and

maidenh grasses in fall. In winter, South Korea’s

tallest mountain, the dormanth volcano Hallasan,

glistens6 with snow-capped splendor.7 Whatever

time of year you visit, you can’t fail to be impressed

by Jeju Island. 中文翻譯請見 p. 68
