The Cortina Club of Ireland celebrated the 50th birthday of the iconic Ford Cortina in Septem-ber. Some 70 Cortina models converged on Ro-scarbery, West Cork, to display this iconic car. Produced at the Ford factory in Cork, the Ford Cor-tina was first launched in Ireland in 1962 and very quickly became a favourite with Irish motorists. With the launch of the Mk III model in 1970, the Cortina began more than a dec-ade as Ireland’s most popular car. It was the top selling model every year for a 10 year period (1972 to 1981 inclusive). “The Cortina is truly an iconic Ford with a great Irish legacy”, said Eddie Murphy, Chairman and Managing Director of Ford Ireland. “For anyone who lived through the 60s and 70s, the Cortina was such a common sight on our streets and drive-ways. It was a car that was loved by motorists across the coun-

try both for its modern new design and its great driving ability.” The Cortina Club of Ireland which has over 100 members around the country was set up in 1995 and gives an opportunity for dedicated enthusiasts to get together, display their cars and share views, technical advice and spare parts. Speaking about his love of the car, Treasurer with the Cortina Club of Ireland, John Noel Cronin of Mallow says: “I used to own a Mark I Cortina in the 1970s and the beauty of the car was that it was so easy to work on. Just about eve-ry mechanical part in it unbolts and, with a little confidence, one can turn the saddest of Cortinas into a roadworthy classic.” Originally conceived as a replacement for the Ford Con-sul in 1962, the car ceased production in 1982 when it was replaced by the Ford Sierra. The car was named after the chic Italian Al-pine ski resort, Cortina d’Ampezzo. The Cortina was produced in

five variants (Mark I through V) and in motorsport, Cortina was a hugely successful nameplate during the 1960s and into the 1970s.TG4 has made a programme about the 50th anniversa-ry of the Cortina that will be screened during December.

Ferris & Dowds Call For World Heritage Status For GlendaloughLabour TDs Anne Ferris and Robert Dowds have called for the Government to press the case for Glendalough to be made a UNESCO World Heritage Site as soon as possible. With a rich cultural his-tory stretching back nearly 1,500 years and visits from thousands of tourists each year, Glendalough is a unique place which is worthy of being inscribed on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. Anne Ferris said: “The people of Wicklow are very proud to have such a unique and beautiful attraction as Glendal-ough in our own county. I feel very strongly that the Government should press the case as strongly as possible for Glendalough to be made a UN-ESCO World Heritage Site in the near future. I have examined the criteria by which the World Heritage Committee determine whether a site can be designated and there is no doubt that Glen-dalough would comfortably fulfil the criteria. “We currently have only three other World Heritage Sites on the island in Brú na Bóinne, the Giant’s Causeway and Sceillig Mícheál, and it would be fantastic if we could add to that list by having Glendalough inscribed

on the list as well. I intend to write to people in the local community and to the other stake-holders involved so that we can make a big ef-fort to have Glendalough placed on the list. The Minister was very clear that there was nothing stopping Glendalough from being inscribed on the list as long as everyone in the community pulls together on this. It will be a fantastic project for the entire community in Wick-low, and hopefully we will reach our objective in the near future. There would be substantial benefits for tourism in Wick-low if Glendalough is designated as a World Heritage Site.

Robert Dowds said: “Glendalough is a fantastic heritage that the people of Ireland

treasure, and it is also a significant tourist draw which helps provide many jobs not only in Glen-dalough but also across the country. If it can be inscribed as being a World Heritage Site, this will only increase its attraction for tourists and help to boost tourist numbers further. With a history that

stretches back nearly 1,500 years, Glendalough is a place that must be protected and preserved. It is a fantastic piece of our heritage which is unique giv-en the exceptional natural beauty surrounding it. “

Government must increase fundinGfor suicide preventionWritten By Philip O Shea

(Beside Peppers Cafe)

SINN Féin, Dublin Mid-West representative Eoin Ó Broin has called on Fine Gael and Labour to increase the funding provision for suicide prevention services. The call comes after new research reveals that every 18 days a child under the age of 18 takes their own life.

Suicide is a major problem in our society that has broad reaching effects. It is something that all public representatives and wider society must try to combat. A new report funded by suicide prevention campaign 3Ts published this week, highlighted the fact that Ireland has the fourth highest suicide rate in the EU of people aged between 15 and 24, a very worrying societal trend. Areas with high levels of unemployment

and deprivation, such as Dublin Mid-West, experience higher than average levels of suicide. The report also found that over 80% of victims were male with 17% of those aged just twenty.

The Suicide in Ireland Survey set out to contribute new knowledge and understanding to the problem of elevated Irish youth suicide rates over the past 2 decades. The project was designed to inform national and international suicide research, as well as policy makers and clinicians. The project was imbedded in communities, and its roots can be traced to the kitchen tables of Ireland, where most of the research engagements for the descriptive case study happened.

“Government must increase funding for suicide prevention”Story continued from page one

Ó Broin said:“It is also deeply worrying

that, as revealed in the report, a hospital would refuse to treat individuals displaying suicidal tendencies, as they claimed the person in question was, ‘not our area.’ This attitude is unacceptable

and those who are responsible for administering care should do so accordingly.

This is a damning indignation of the attitude of many people towards suicide. Suicide is a tragedy and it should not be stigmatized. The Government has

attributed funding of €35 million towards mental health services, €13 million of which is directed for suicide prevention.

This is clearly not enough given the scale of the problem. I am calling the Government to increase funding for suicide prevention

services. Fine Gael and Labour TDs must put more pressure on Government to ensure that in Budget 2014 sufficient funding is provided to tackle what is clearly a growing problem.”

Has Garda Presence Reduced On The Roads? An AA poll of over 20,300 Irish motorists shows that almost 72% said they believed that the presence of Gardaí on the roads is less this year than it was last year. Only 8.5% said they disagreed. With so many believing that there are fewer Gardaí on the roads it is not surprising that the same poll showed that almost 40% don’t think the Government is treating road safety as a priority.“Perception is every bit as important as reality when it comes to road traffic policing.” Says Director of Consumer Affairs Conor Faughnan. “Ireland has been a road safety success story recently but it is essential to keep up the momentum. Road deaths reached a record low last year which we all welcomed but 2013 has shown a worrying slip in those standards. Prominent, visible policing is critical.”The AA believes that the Garda remain committed to the task. The progress that has been made in recent years would not have been

possible without their dedication. Efforts like Operation Slow Down over the Bank Holiday weekend are very welcome. The AA is calling on the government to make sure that the adequate resources are provided to the Garda to ensure that road safety strategy is not allowed to drift down the priority list.“We know from our dealings with AA Members that people want to see Gardaí out and about on our roads.” Says Faughnan. “The Garda know that first hand themselves. We have also proved in recent years that prominent traffic policing saves lives. Even with public finances so challenged we cannot allow road safety to fall backwards in 2013. The human cost is just too high.”There were 162 deaths on Irish roads last year, the lowest number since records began but still a number that is far too high. Regrettably, 2013 began badly and deaths are up by 18% so far.Crumbling roads

Another area of worry for Irish motorists is the condition of Irish roads. A staggering 82.5% of those polled believe that the condition of Irish roads has worsened since last year. This is unsurprising given the substantially reduced spend on road maintenance in the last few years.“The roads, especially secondary roads, took a lot of damage in the exceptional freeze events of 2010.” Says Faughnan. “Not enough was done to rectify that afterwards and since then we have endured chronic under-funding of road maintenance. This is why the AA gets complaints and attends car breakdowns caused by potholes and dangerous road surfaces on a daily basis.”“Roads are not like fine wine.” Says Faughnan. “They do not improve with age. If you do not keep them properly the damage gets worse and the ultimate repair cost escalates. This is what is happening now, as every motorist who has hit a pothole in recent months could tell you.”

IRISH Water Chief Executive John Tierney has said it is planned that people will receive their first bill for water charges in January 2015. That is a year later than the original deadline for the introduction of water charges, as set out in the Troika bailout programme, which was meant to be January 2014.

Mr Tierney said the Commission for Energy Regulation will determine how much households will have to pay in water charges. And that there will also be a cost for installation, payable in instalments, but Irish Water has not confirmed how much it will be as of yet.

The first homes to get meters will be contacted in July and work on installation of the meters is set to begin in August. At an average of 27,000 a month, more than a million water meters will

be installed in the next three-and-a-half years. He said that the installation of water meters would initially start in six defined regions before becoming a “nationwide roll-out occurring simultaneously across the country".

Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Mr Tierney said that people would receive two weeks' notice before the installation of water meters. Households will have their water cut off for a maximum of two hours while the meters are being installed. The meters will be situated on the public footpath outside people's homes unlike most electricity meters that are situated inside people houses, which will help ease the reading of the meters.

Mr Tierney also defended the Abtran call centre that is set to run the Irish Water national

helpline. Abtran suspended an employee last month who allegedly took credit card details from people paying their property tax and Mr Tierney confirmed that Irish Water waited to see the outcome of that incident before "embracing" the contract for the helpline with Abtran. "We delayed for two weeks to see what the outcome of that incident was before we embraced the contract", he said. “If you think about in the last two days and the last day of the property tax payments, they dealt with 45,000 calls very efficiently and I think that is really heartening for the future." The call centre will open its customer care lines in July to coincide with the start of the water meter roll out.

Between installation and customer care services, 2,000 jobs are to be created. Which sounds like a good thing, but Fianna Fáil has called for clarity

on what will happen to the jobs of more than 4,000 local authority workers currently employed in water services.

With the problems the government have had trying to get people to pay their property tax, are they going to run into the same problems when trying to install, maintain and receive payment for these meters? The arguments for these meters are good ones. Everyday thousands of litres of water are wasted down our drains and toilets, whether it’s just bad practise or leaky pipes the metering of water seems like an obvious solution. But it’s looked upon as another way for the government to bleed more money out of people. People are asking why do we need water meters in a country where there is massive rainfall annually? Good question.

New Face For Grafton Street WORk to replace the red brick on Grafton Street with a more durable granite stone is due to begin this month and will last for approximately 14 to 18 months with an eight week break at Christmas. The work will be carried out in sections to reduce the disruption to the shops along the busy pedestrian street, during this time the street will remain open but be restricted for delivery vans. The whole operation will cost a whopping €4 million but with the red brick in such disrepair it must be done, repairs are carried out on the busy street on a near daily basis costing the Dublin City Council precious funds.

“We can’t afford not to do it because we are spending money every day replacing brick and repairing parts of the road,” explained Brian Swan, deputy city architect.

The change has been in talks since early 2012

but the planning permission was only granted last month in accordance with the Planning and Development Act 2000 – 2010 and the Planning and Development Regulations 2001 – 2010, part 8.

The new granite will follow a pink and grey colour scheme which is similar to what is currently on O’Connell Street and Henry Street, part of the granite has be sourced locally from Wicklow but the rest is Iberian granite.

However the makeover won’t stop with just the new paving there is also plans to change the street furniture such as street lamps, signage, bollards, etc.

Thankfully the disruption to consumers and traders will be minimised with their scheduling but it will still be a strange sight to see the familiar and iconic red brick of Grafton Street replaced with a more modern paving stone.

THE first meeting of the Oireachtas all-party group on Cochlear Implants

took place recently. It was very well attended, 17 TDs and Seanadóirí took part or sent one of their staffers. A number of others indicated their support for the campaign but were unable to attend because of other Oireachtas commitments. The meeting was chaired by Louth TD Gerry Adams and addressed by two parents from the Happy New Ear campaign, Danielle Ryan and Amie O Connor.

Cochlear implants are tiny electronic devices embedded into the spiral of the cochlea (inner ear) in surgery that has been simplified in recent years. They replace the function of the inner ear by sending sounds in the form of electrical signals from an external microphone, directly to the hearing nerve and to the

brain through a very thin wire called an electrode. Deaf children can receive cochlear implants (CIs) from a very young age – ideally before the age of five, if spoken language has not been acquired. CIs are best for children with a severe to profound deafness in both ears. Cochlear implants consist of both internally implanted and externally-worn components. The external parts are taken off at night when the child goes to sleep (like a hearing-aid), goes swimming or engages in contact sports.

At present, children in Ireland are implanted in one ear only, which, while fantastic that the child hears, is not acceptable as bilateral implants are recognised as international best standard. Ireland is one of the only

countries limiting children to one implant.

Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams TD speaking after the meeting said:

“I want to thank all of the TDs and Seanadóirí who attended today’s meeting and the families for briefing us on recent developments. Good progress has been made recently and a business proposal to provide bilateral cochlear implants will be presented by Beaumont hospital in June.

The business plan calls for €7 million capital investment and annual running costs of €4 million. This will address the 200 children who are expected to take up this opportunity. The business plan is based on a British model which will have the children divided into groups

with the largest, Group 1, containing 65 children aged less than five years. It is expected that it will take 18 months – two years to clear the back log of children.”

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin told the meeting that the Health Committee will be holding its quarterly meeting with the Minister for Health and that this issue is down on the agenda for discussion. He asked the other party representatives to join in the discussion in support of the children.

The meeting acknowledged that this is a winnable campaign but that the focus must be on keeping up the pressure and delivering the funding and business plan as early as possible.

Is Ireland A Tax HavenFor Corporations?THERE has been a clear contradiction in the last week between international sources and the Irish government in relation to Ireland’s tax status. On the one hand we have the Taoiseach purporting that Ireland does not “do special tax-rate deals with companies”. Tanaiste, Eamon Gilmore, has been adamant that Ireland’s corporate tax structure remains transparent. He has also toed the Taoiseach’s line that Ireland does not negotiate favourable or particular rates with any corporation.

In contrast both sides of the Atlantic have taken issue with Ireland’s tax structures. Congressional hearings in the United States, investigating Apple’s offshore taxation policies, found that Apple had negotiated favourable tax conditions when setting up in Ireland in the early 80’s. More startling perhaps was the revelation that Apple had paid 2% on €74 Billion worth of revenue in the last three years. Clearly such figures would suggest discrepancy in the Government’s adamant assertion that Ireland’s corporate tax structures do not constitute ‘Tax Haven’ status.

Foreign sales, accounting for 60% of Apple’s profits, are routed through Irish subsidiaries and taxed nowhere. Apple’s Irish

holding company which has no employees at the top of its foreign operations also serves as a group finance company. Apple Inc., the U.S. parent of the whole group, pays U.S. tax on the investment earnings of this company. In other words the holding company pays no tax to any government, and has not paid tax for five years.

Other multinational’s such as Google appear to have also taken advantage of the favourable Irish situation. This has been done through the setting up of multiple subsidiaries in Ireland, while still managing these subsidiaries from abroad. Such a situation blurs the legal clarity as to where these subsidiaries are registered and eligible for tax purposes. The outcome of which is that we now have U.S politicians such as Democratic Senator Carl Levin saying that companies should not be able to “shift its value to a tax haven which is what Ireland is”.In the United kingdom there has been criticism of Google’s method of channelling profits and sales once more through Irish subsidiaries. This practice allows the company to avail of Ireland’s tax regime.

The injustice of all of this is highlighted by recently published research by All Ireland

Research Observatory (AIBO), which has noted the stark contrast of tax burden in Ireland. The change in the relative proportion of different tax receipts between 2006 and 2012 shows that income tax has grown from 27.2% of all tax receipts in 2006 to 41.4% in 2012, VAT has dropped from 29.5% to 27.8%, excise duty remains relatively unchanged at 12.3% to 12.8%, while corporation tax has fallen to 11.5% from 14.7%, and capital gains tax has fallen to 1.1% from 6.8%.

Basically the burden of tax receipts has strongly shifted to individual income tax and the trend on corporation tax has been declining since 2002 despite the boom years and the fact that since 2002 the volume and value of exports has grown. In other words the rich have gotten richer while everyone else has shouldered the tax burden for the nation. The introduction of the local property tax is yet another tax burden on individual families, while the tax burden remains as low as 11.5% for corporations.

Increased productivity and a reduction of costs is what the country needs to improve national competitiveness. As part of their effort to make Ireland ‘the best small country in the world in which to do business’, the government plans to carefully monitor the decisions they make in business and productivity, according to Jobs Minister, Richard Burton. His comments came as he launched a Forfás report, which examines Ireland’s Competitiveness Performance. This report compares the country’s performance with its international competitors on a range of different factors. Speaking at the launch, Burton made it clear that the country’s competitiveness is improving but more discipline is needed to deliver jobs targets.“This Government is committed to improving

Ireland’s competitiveness, making it easier to start and grow a business, and ultimately easier to create jobs. In order to systematically improve our performance, I asked Forfás to benchmark our performance against our competitors on a range of measures. Today’s report, the result of that process, is a striking reminder that while we have made significant improvements in competitiveness in recent years, we risk losing the gains we have made without determined action across the economy.”The chief executive of Forfás, Martin D. Shanahan, further affirmed that the country needed a boost in productivity to succeed in a competitive environment.“In recent years, we have seen a reduction in a range of key costs including property,

business services and unit labour costs and at the same time productivity has increased, public finances are being restructured and employment levels have stabilised despite adverse economic conditions. It is still unclear to what extent these gains are simply a cyclical response to the recession and are likely to be eroded as economic growth improves or if they are more permanent structural changes as a result of recent reforms”.However, he warned the public that they had to not lose sight of their main goals.“Recent competitiveness gains should be guarded with vigilance and the focused efforts to improve Ireland’s performance must be sustained in order to deliver on the Government’s jobs target.”

Anti-PropertyTax Single ReleasedOn iTunes‘Now Is the Time for Rage’ was officially launched at a Press Conference and has been played on Today FM’s The Last Word, on RTE’s Arena and on East Coast FM so far. About fifty radio stations all around the country received the song on Mp3 this week and it has also been released on iTunes. The intention is that this will allow, not just the committed people of the campaign to download the track and register a vote against this tax and austerity, but it will also allow those who felt coerced, bullied and threatened to register their vote of protest...

Speakers at the launch included Eamonn McCann, Bobby Ballagh and Joe Higgins, who had this to say:

“As Eamonn says, for centuries people have sung as they have marched into class battle! Songs of resistance can potentially have an impact on a movement, but, as he also says, there has to be an avalanche of support.

A lot of people from a number of different CAHWT campaign groups have put a huge amount of effort into getting this song recorded, registered and up on iTunes - now we need the whole campaign behind it to get it out there and to get sales going – We need a huge push between now and the 9th of June. We don’t have the resources that the Louis Walsh’s of this world have to buy airtime and ad space so it’s down to all of us.

The deadline has passed but the battle is by no means over. We have still a fight ahead of us and we are going to need resources to keep going. Huge sales of this song can deliver just that. If we were also to get it into the charts, it’s another way for people to register their protest vote against this hated property tax, which many people felt under duress to pay. It’s another way of sending out a political message. But to achieve this we need lots of sales up to the 9th of June.”

Kevins GAA Strategic Plan: Embracing Our Future

‘EMBRACING Our Future’ (the club’s five year strategy) was launched recently in Griffith College Dublin. Over 100 members, supporters (including a number of TDs and local representatives) turned up to the event to hear about the plan. Also present on the night was County Board Chairman (Andy kettle) and Secretary (John Costello), as well as kevin O’Shaughnessy and Niall Cooper.

Eoghan Redmonds’ video footage of recent activities warmed up the crowd, before MC on the night (JJ O’Mahony) kicked into action and emphasised that the club is attempting to create a “village in the city”. Club Chairperson (Brian Flannery) welcomed everyone to the event and highlighted the importance of the future generation. Strategy Sub Committee Chairperson (David Hyland) provided

an overview of the plan itself, which was developed in conjunction with the clubs stakeholders. Games Promotion Officer (Paul MacManus) provided some practical examples of recent successes within the club, which was peppered with some witty insights to his experiences to date since being assigned to the club.

The Programme Steering Committee Chairman (Nickey Brennan) and College President (Dermot Hegarty) spoke about their view of the plans and the importance of the work that clubs like kevin’s do in the area. Some key points made included Nickey’s comment that kids will play all sports and that’s part of growing up. However, when they arrive in kevin’s they will receive a special welcome. Dermot also spoke about

early intervention with children at risk and highlighted the point, that it is critical that children receive the correct guidance by the age of six.

Despite the high profile speakers, it was the successful Féile team who received a standing ovation for their recent success. Underage hurler Joey Mowlds spoke about the importance of hurling from a youth perspective.

A big part of the night included the launch of the new club crest, which was one of the actions outlined in the strategy. The new club crest reflects a fresh start and has been modernised as part of looking to the future. The strategy document is available on the clubs website (http://www.kevins.ie).

Homelessness On The Increase Through DublinThe latest figures released by the Dublin Region Homeless Executive Forum and the Management Group reveal a sharp rise in the number of people sleeping rough in Dublin in 2013.

Statistics released at the end of May confirmed that there were a minimum of ninety-four people sleeping rough on the streets of Dublin. Of this number, seventy- two were male, eleven were female, and eleven were unknown.

These figures show a dramatic spike of thirty per cent compared to figures for the same period last year; they also show an increase of seven people compared to previous figures released in December 2012. Fourty-six per cent of this group were Irish nationals. Twenty-three per cent were non- nationals and twenty five per cent were undeclared.

The head count takes place twice a year. It is coordinated by Dublin City Council and

carried out from 1am to 5am by experienced outreach volunteers across the Council’s Administrative Area.

According to The Homeless Agency the count provides a “robust measure of the minimum number of people sleeping rough on the night of the count and ensures that homeless services can plan effectively in terms of service provision for people who are rough sleeping.”

The persistently high number of rough sleepers in Dublin reflects an accuracy in the abilities of outreach volunteers to pinpoint those most at risk.

The definition of a Rough sleeper is “People who sleep, or bed down, in the open air; people in buildings or other places not designed for habitation.”

This includes shop doorways, bus- shelters, public phone boxes, parks, sheds, car -parks, bushes, tents, dog-boxes, hospital waiting rooms and public stations.

Ninety-four people is a high figure, but a more precise figure could be in the hundreds, as due to the random, chaotic nature of rough sleepers it is impossible to completely pinpoint all of them. Therefore, the count is regarded as a snapshot of rough sleepers on Dublin’s streets on any typical night.

Homeless charity Focus Ireland estimates that there are up to 5,000 people homeless in Ireland at any given time. Most of these people stay in short-term emergency accommodation such as shelters, B&Bs, on a friend’s sofa or a squat.

The marked increase in these figures reflects the accumulating crisis in Ireland today, with thousands more families in real danger of losing their home due to struggling with grave mortgage arrears or because of the herculean waiting lists for local authority housing.

Pilot Wi-Fi project in Lucan VillageLUCAN is the first village in South Dublin County to offer free Wi-Fi to the public in 2013. This is a pilot scheme and it is hoped that Wi-Fi provision will be eventually extended to other towns and villages throughout the County. The introduction of a free Wi-Fi zone in Lucan Village is in co-operation with local businesses as part of the new ‘Villages Initiative’.

The Elected Members agreed as part of the Council’s annual budget process to allocate specific funds for the development of designated villages within the County. The primary purpose of this fund was to deliver initiatives which would increase the footfall in our villages and drive economic development in the retail and tourism

sectors in particular.Making the announcement, Mayor Cathal

king said:“The provision of easy access to technology

is vital to the future development of all our towns and villages and I am pleased to announce the introduction of this pilot initiative for Lucan Village. The availability of free Wi-Fi will complement the public realm schemes currently planned for our towns and villages and I am confident that this project will prove successful and that we can replicate this initiative in other towns and villages with the support of local businesses and residents.”

County Manager, Philomena Poole added that, “In the current economic climate, the

Council is introducing free Wi-Fi to Lucan village to improve retail opportunities for local businesses, shoppers and visitors to the area. It is imperative that our villages are recognised as hubs of economic and social activity and the ‘Villages Initiative’ encompasses thoughtful landscaping, multi-year action plans and strong partnership between the Council, local voluntary groups and businesses. The Council is committed to the provision of digitally inclusive centres and this pilot project is a great example of how the Council is dedicated to the delivery of a host of innovative projects which aim to benefit local businesses and communities here in South Dublin County.”

Upgrade for Bunting Road Running Track Written By Holli Breslin

THE running track around the park on Bunting Road in Walkinstown has been in a state of dilapidation over the last number of years. Dublin City Council made the decision to approach this matter and is

backed up by Ray McHugh, the Sinn Féin Representative for Crumlin/Walkinstown.

The Crumlin area office of Dublin City Council has informed Sinn Féin that work on the track is due to begin in early June.

McHugh thinks that the improvement of the track will be good for the local club and the community in general.

Choose a bigger tent then you needThis is probably the biggest mistake people make, a 2-man tent is for 2 people lying side by side in sleeping bags it does not account for the mountains of stuff you will be bringing along with you! Always go 1 bigger as a minimum after all you can never have enough room and it means you can give a space to the random you’ll meet along the way.

Choose your spot carefullyArrive early for the best choice of pitches. Try and choose a spot that is within site of landmarks you’ll remember and will be visible when you wake up to a field full of tents as far as the eye can see. Whatever you do stay clear of the toilets and anything down hill of the toilets unless you like the smell! Also steer clear of the security towers and lights unless you like the constant noise of a generator and bright light shinning through your tent all night.

Claim you spotDo whatever you can to mark out your territory if you don’t want to wake up to the side of someone’s tent in the morning. Remember this is festival camping so the usual rules don’t apply. People will pitch anywhere and everywhere in desperation.

Form a circleIf you go as a group then the “circle” is a good approach, it worked for the cowboys so it will work for you. Make sure all your openings face inwards, that way if it does chuck it down you can sit in your tents with the flaps open chatting to each other.

Identify your tentIt might seem stupid, after all you know what your tent looks like right? Wrong! After a day of cider they will all look the same so try adding a flag or a spinner on a pole or anything you can do to make your tent stand out. Writing “free sex, see inside” will do the trick but you might not like the people who come knocking, then again maybe you will (let me know how that works for you).

Make friends with you neighboursGetting to know the people who have pitched their tents near yours will add to your festival experience and also to the amount of eyes that will watch over your camp when your not there.

Don’t lock you tentDon’t be tempted to put a lock on your tent. Whilst it might seem like a good idea, it simply highlights to any would be thieves that you have something worth stealing inside. Lets face it a knife will cut through the side of any tent so your also wasting your time. To be safe don’t take anything with you that you are not prepared to lose.

Hide your valuables when asleepDon’t make it easy for thieves by stuffing your wallet/money or valuables in your boots by the front of the tent put them inside you sleeping bag or by your head so they are the furthest away from the entrance.

Plan for disasterDrunk people tend to fall over and tents don’t offer a lot of support, so when the 2 meet, poles tend to get broken. Take some Gaffa tape with you to try and patch up any broken poles.

PRICES in shops should be rounded up or down in an effort to do away one and two cent coins, a report recommends today. The National Payments Plan published by the Central Bank found that one and two cent coins are not actively used by consumers and are expensive to mint. In many countries, including the Netherlands and Finland, low denomination coins have effectively been removed from circulation through the use of the rounding rule. With this rule, goods and services are still priced in multiples of one or two cent but are rounded up at the till. For example a bill of €35.21 is rounded down to €35.20 while a bill of €35.23 is rounded up to €35.25.

The NPP says a trial run should be started in mid-sized Irish towns to see how consumer and merchants react to the use of a rounding rule in Ireland. Bray, Co Wicklow, and Drogheda and Dundalk in Co Louth are in the running to be chosen to pilot the scheme.

Ronnie O’Toole, project manager of the NPP said “Customers tend to hang on to

their small change so it doesn’t circulate. A one cent coin costs two cent to mint due to the rising cost in metal. They don’t buy anything as no goods or services are priced at this level and very few machines accept them.”

Ireland has spent €11.8 million minting coins with a monetary value of only €7.1 million since 2004. Data published by the Department of Finance shows that Ireland has minted 713.6 million 1c coins in the last eight years. Those coins have a monetary value of €7,136,862.73 – but because the Central Bank estimates that it costs 1.65 cent to mint every individual 1c coin, Ireland will have spent €11,775,823.50 in making those coins.

As a result, Ireland has lost €4,638,960.78 having to produce the 1c coins. The figures also show that Ireland has minted nearly 443 million 2c coins in the same period of time – coins which cost an estimated 1.94 cent to produce. This means Ireland has spent almost €4.3 million minting coins with a monetary value of €4.4 million.

Ireland has minted a total of 3.3 billion euro coins since the physical notes and coins became legal tender in 2002.

A Europe-wide survey taken in September 2010 revealed that the Irish were among the Europeans who most favoured the removal of 1c and 2c coins from circulations, with 89 per cent of Irish people wanting to scrap the 1c coin and 73 per cent looking to abandon the 2c piece.

That was out of the 26 per cent of Irish people who said there were too many coins to begin with – with only 70 per cent of people satisfied that there were just the right number of Euro pieces in circulation. Unsurprisingly, though many countries were similarly minded – a significant number of people in every Eurozone country were dissatisfied with the current range of coins.

Other recommendations from the NPP include increasing the dispensing of €10 notes in ATM’s, new technologies such as mobile payments and contact-less cards and modernisation of social welfare payments.

Despite the obvious things like your tent, money and tickets, I would say these are my top tips for necessities you should consider taking.

1. Ear PlugsMight sound silly but trust me when your trying to get to sleep with people snoring, talking and playing music you’ll be glad you’ve got them.

2. TravelJohn pee bagsThese fantastic bags will mean you don’t have to leave your tent in the middle of the night in the dark, cold & wet weather for some stinking toilets.

3. Head TorchYou might look like a miner but trust me you’ll be glad you’ve got your hands free when your scrabbling around trying to find things.

4. PonchoThe good old Irish summer time always likes to throw in a shower or 2 so be prepared.

5. Good Quality Sleeping BagIt might be summer time but it will get cold at night so spend an extra few quid and invest it in a decent sleeping bag.

6. Bin bagsYou will need somewhere to put your dirty clothes and they are great for keeping your clean clothes dry should your tent leak.

7. Body Wipes/Wet Wipes/Dry ShampooYou don’t have the luxury of a shower so you’ll need something to freshen you up and these are the best solution. No need to hide your greasy hair under a hat all weekend, a few sprays of dry shampoo and you’re good to go!

8. Antibacterial Hand GelIf you do use the Toilets then the free Hand Gel in them will run out in hours so don’t forget to take your own.

9. Folding ChairTrust me you will want one to sit in first thing in the morning and last thing at night as you all sit around chatting about the day.

10. Arm WalletDon’t be a victim of crime. Sadly some people go to festivals to rob you and not to enjoy themselves so don’t take anything you are not prepared to lose and protect anything you do.

11. Portable Phone ChargerThe only way of getting hold of your mates is your phone so ensure you have something to recharge your phone while you are there. If you have an old Nokia or such like lying around, it might be a good option to bring that, as non- smart phone batteries last a whole lot longer than newer phones. And if its raining then its going to be mucky. How would you feel if your fancy iPhone gets damaged or destroyed.

Changes In Jobseeker’s Arrangement for Lone ParentsCHANGES to the Jobseeker’s Allowance Scheme for lone parents have been published in the Social Welfare and Pensions (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2013. Michael Conaghan has welcomed these reforms as good news for people in receipt of a One-Parent Family Payment (OFP) their children and for society in general.

Conaghan says that recognition is being given to the demands which are put on lone parents trying to hold down full-time paid work and also looking after their children. He also drew attention to the lack of subsidies which these parents are given to help with childcare.

“Gradual changes to the upper age limit of the youngest child to qualify to the OFP, announced in 2011 have been underway since last year.”By July 2015, parents will cease to receive OFP once their youngest child has reached the age of seven. Before the provisions in this recent bill this would have resulted in the parent either taking up employment or applying for another social income support payment which was most likely

to be Jobseeker’s Allowance. After extensive research, there is evidence that

employment offers the best protection against poverty. Lone parents are more vulnerable to poverty than any other social group. This change also recognises the importance of female participation in the labour market.

To qualify for Jobseeker’s Allowance at present a lone parent is required to be available and genuinely seeking full-time work. With the introduction of these changes unemployed lone parents with a (youngest) child aged between seven and fourteen will not have to fulfill this requirement. As an alternative they will be provided with education, training and employment supports to enable them to be job ready when their caring responsibilities become less.

“The Department of Social Protection will be inviting OFP recipients to Information Sessions in mid-June where these changes and their options will be fully explained.”

Worrying figures contained in the recently released European Drug Report 2013 reveal that Ireland has one of the biggest levels of Cocaine consumption in Europe.

Along with neighbours Uk, Spain, Italy, and Denmark, Ireland sits in top half of the European Cocaine- user’s league table.

At the other end of the table are East European countries - Lithuania, Poland and the Czech Republic, Hungary, Greece and Romania where Cocaine consumption averaged at 0.5 % of the population.

The report published by the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) reveals that almost 7 % of our population in the 15 - 64 age group have tried Cocaine.

Almost 3 % of the 15 -34-year-old age group have admitted to taking Cocaine during the past year.

This figure is much higher than the European average, which stands at less than 2 %.The EMCDDA says Cocaine use is "relatively high" here, particularly among a younger consumer group.

The report states “Cocaine has established itself as the most commonly used illicit stimulant drug in Europe’.

Ireland’s rise to the top tier accelerated during the boom years of the Celtic Tiger. Nowadays the price of Cocaine has plummeted. A gram of cocaine costs as little as €40 because of market saturation and stiff competition from so called ‘Legal High’s.

Despite the high figures, Cocaine use has actually declined. This is mainly due to the influx of Legal Highs. Ireland has the highest rate of use of legal highs. The EMCDDA state that this represents a “fundamental shift in the market in illicit drugs.”In Ireland, government funded treatment centres cater mainly for the treatment of opiate/Heroin addiction.

The Drug Treatment Centre Board is the longest established treatment service in the country. It is the biggest addiction treatment centre in Ireland with over 500 service users from all over Dublin. The vast majority of these are Heroin users, although a recent study carried out in conjunction with the board indicated that almost 10 % of clients were regular users of cocaine.

The study recommended that an increased availability of psychological/behavioural treatment programmes with proven efficacy in Cocaine addiction might help improve overall treatment outcomes.

Croi Nua is one such recently established project, set up by both staff and service users of The Addiction Response Team in Crumlin. The project provides intervention, support, education and counselling together with holistic therapies for clients with a specific Cocaine addiction.

A similar service is offered by The Tallaght Cocaine Project ,hosted by CARP-killinarden and St Dominic’s Contact Centre .They offer a Cocaine specific service that offers holistic and one to one therapies offering Cocaine users a stabilization programme.

“SLAVE LABOUR" is a mural that was painted by a British graffiti artist, Banksy, on the side wall of a Poundland store in Wood Green, London in May 2012, an area that had been significantly damaged by the London riots in 2011. The artwork is 48 by 60 inches, depicts an urchin child at a sewing machine assembling a bunting of Union Jack patches. The work had been covered with a protective perspex screen. It is believed that the work is a protest against the use of sweatshops to manufacture Diamond Jubilee and London Olympics memorabilia in 2012.

There is controversy over the mysterious disappearance of the mural, as a portion of the wall was physically removed from the building the artwork was sprayed upon. The owners of the building have not commented either way on whether it was legally or illegally sold and removed. When the mural mysteriously disappeared in February 2013 - the following week it was listed for sale on an online site and later appeared for sale at the Fine Art Auctions Miami for half a million dollars ($500,000). The Auction house insisted the artwork was acquired through a legitimate transaction with a "well known collector." The listing of the art at the auction outraged the community of Wood Green residents, who believe the work was a gift to them, and who believe that listing the artwork for sale at auction contradicted the wishes of the artist, whose message called for an end to exploitation in the name of capitalism. However,

despite claims that the acquisition of the artwork was legitimate, the FAAM director Frederic Thut withdrew the artwork, even after three bids had already been placed. Thut was also advised to keep quiet about the whole situation.

But it has emerged this week that it will be put up for sale once more at a members- only event in the Convent Garden area, on June 2nd. The event is been held by The Sincura Group. “Our goal is to find a buyer who will keep it in the U.k” said Tony Baxter, director of the Sincura Group. “We know the sale of the Banksy has caused great controversy. We’ve done our due diligence and there is no legal issue.”

A U.S collector has agreed to buy the painting and the sale will be completed if no buyer can be found at a higher price in London, Baxter said. He would not disclose value, though he said in an email that “I wouldn’t be surprised if it didn’t reach $1 million” at the Sincura event.

A stencil of what seems like Banksy's signature rat holding a sign saying "Why?" appeared next to the area, it is said to be Banksy retaliating against the theft of his own artwork. But the artwork has since been removed. A representative of Banksy claims the rat is

a fake. When prompted to comment on the sale of his artworks through auction houses, Banksy replied by giving a quote from Henry Matisse: "I was very embarrassed when my canvases began to fetch high prices, I saw myself condemned to a future of painting nothing but masterpieces." Furthermore, in previous attempts to sell his artwork, he has stated his position, “For the sake of keeping all street art where it belongs I'd encourage people not to buy anything by anybody unless it was created for sale in the first place.”

It’s been two years. Phil (Bradley Cooper), Stu (Ed Helms) and Doug (Justin Bartha) are happily living uneventful lives at home.

Tattoos have been lasered off, files purged. The last they heard from disaster-magnet Leslie Chow (ken Jeong), he’d been tossed into a Thai prison and, with him out of the way, the guys have very nearly recovered from their nights prowling the seamy side of Las Vegas in a roofie’d haze, and being kidnapped, shot at, and chased by drug- dealing mobsters in Bangkok.

The only member of the Wolfpack who’s not content is Alan (Zach Galifianakis). Still lacking

a sense of purpose, the group’s black sheep has ditched his meds and given in to his natural impulses in a big way-which, for Alan, means no boundaries, no filters and no judgment-until a personal crisis forces him to finally seek the help he needs.

And who better than his three best friends to make sure he takes the first step. This time, there’s no bachelor party. No wedding. What could possibly go wrong? But when the Wolfpack hits the road, all bets are off.

“The Hangover Part III” is the epic conclusion

to an incomparable odyssey of mayhem and bad decisions, in which the guys must finish what they started by going back to where it all began: Las Vegas. One way or another...it all ends here.

From Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures comes “The Hangover Part III,” the third and final film in director Todd Phillips’ record-shattering comedy trilogy.

“The Hangover Part III” reunites stars Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis and Justin Bartha as Phil, Stu, Alan and Doug. Also returning to the cast are ken Jeong as Leslie Chow; Heather

Graham as Stu’s first wife, Jade; and Jeffrey Tambor as Alan’s father, Sid. Joining the ensemble for the first time is John Goodman, starring as the guys’ new nightmare, Marshall.

Agent Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) summons Dom (Vin Diesel) and his crew to London in order to take on a team of mercenary drivers who have

caused havoc across a dozen countries in this pedal-to-the-metal installment of the rubber-burning action franchise. Having just earned a tidy $100 million for taking down a ruthless criminal kingpin, Dom and Brian (Paul Walker) have decided to lie low for a while. Fugitives from the law, they’re constantly looking over their shoulders, no matter where they travel.

Meanwhile, the malevolent leader of an elusive criminal outfit (Luke Evans) has incurred the wrath of Agent Hobbs, who has decided that the only way to shut them down is to beat them on their own turf. Realizing that Dom knows the only drivers in the world with the skills to get the job done, Agent Hobbs offers them all full pardons if they will come to London, and get back behind the wheel. The closer the renegade drivers get to the organization, however, the more apparent it becomes that Dom’s former lover Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) is not only still alive, but a key figure among their ranks. Now, with their freedom finally within reach, Dom and the team reassemble for their most dangerous mission to date.

Building on the worldwide blockbuster success of Fast Five and taking the action, stunts and narrative to even greater heights, “Fast & Furious 6” sees director Justin Lin back behind the camera for the fourth time. He is supported by longtime producers Neal H. Moritz and Vin Diesel, who welcome producer Clayton Townsend back to the series.

New LUAS BXD to undergo pre-construction June 24th MINISTER for Transport Leo Varadkar announced that work on the new 5.6 km cross-city Luas line in Dublin is due to start imminently.

Reports suggest June 24th as the starting date for pre-construction work on the new cross-city line known as Luas BXD.

The exciting new project, costing an estimated €370million to construct will change the way people travel across the city and beyond, with a dramatic reduction in car journeys expected.

The construction of the Cross City line will link both existing Red and Green Luas lines together, along with the Sligo/Maynooth line, thereby providing access for commuters to the entire Luas network.

The line will stretch from St Stephen’s Green to Broombridge in Cabra with a loop

in Dublin city centre crossing a newly built bridge on Marlborough Street and inter-linking with the Luas Red line on O Connell Street.

Eleven new stations will be created, including stops at Trinity College/ Dawson Street, Westmoreland Street, Broadstone - DIT, Phibsborough and the new DIT campus at Grangegorman.

In anticipation of major traffic disruption throughout the city centre The National Transport Authority has set up a coordinating information office and website to keep businesses and the public up to date with traffic restrictions.

Traffic flow systems in the south of the city will be transformed, with buses, cars and parking spaces being removed from Dawson Street and kildare Street on St Stephen’s

Green North.kildare Street will become a two-way

system and car parking will be removed around Stephen’s Green east.

The cross-city project will provide a much-needed source of local employment with the potential for the creation of up to 800 construction jobs during the next four years and around 60 permanent vacancies upon completion of the project.

Construction work is due to last for over four years. The initial preparatory work includes filling in basements and cellars with a special synthetic mix of concrete and foam.Laying of the tracks will begin in 2015.

The project is expected to be operational in 2017.

Written by Emily BodkinThe new Children’s Hospital may not be completed until 2019 or 2021 due to delays in planning.

Although Minister for Health, James Reilly, said in November that the hospital would be opened in 2016, it has emerged that the planning process is taking longer than expected. Construction is believed to begin at the St James site by 2015 and will take three to five years to complete.

Reilly announced that St James’s was awarded the site for the new children’s hospital six months ago but sources have said that nothing has happened since the initial announcement. Dr Reilly has replaced the project board with a number of senior

government officials from his department and hopes to get planning permission by December 2014. In addition to the new board, Dr Reilly informed the Dail that he is aiming for a brand new design team to facilitate the construction. The hospital is estimated to cost up to €600million. The State will provide €450 million while the remainder will come from other sources.

The government hoped to have the hospital completed by 2016, in time for the 100th anniversary of the 1916 Rising, but the changing of construction site altered the completion date. The Mater Hospital was originally meant to be the new site but An Bord Pleanála rejected planning permission.

Once construction is finished on the new hospital, the existing three children’s hospital-Temple St, Crumlin and Tallaght will be merged into one. The boards of these hospitals will be merged also under the chairmanship of the president of NUI Galway, Jim Browne.

A spokesperson from Sinn Féin, Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin, has urged the Minister for Health not to forget about the existing hospitals and to make sure they were sufficiently resourced and funded while the new hospital is being built. Ó Caoláin has said that the delay is ‘hugely disappointing’ and has encouraged the minister to speed up the process.

No Children’s Hospital Until 2019

Buffering, slow to download, pages freezing or shutting down are all the nuisances we have to deal with almost every day when using the internet, but with the new high speed broadband that is being rolled out in Dundrum these problems may now become a thing of the past. The high speed broadband is around six to ten times faster than what Eircom is currently able to provide. The Fibre network has been installed over the last few years to local cabinets while the remaining

distance to individual homes is covered by the traditional copper wiring.

South Dublin TD Olivia Mitchell has welcomed the early roll out plan this week for the Dundrum area saying, “In the coming days Eircom users will be contacted to inform them that they can now register for the new high speed broadband, which will involve no extra cost for users.”

Eircom, however, won’t be the only provider offering this new high speed broadband as the use of the cable will be shared with other providers, such as Vodafone and all other providers who intend to offer packages like Eircom’s offer of TV, mobile, fixed landline and broadband which they’ll be offering later on in the year.

The new high speed broadband is being aimed primarily at domestic users insuring that homes will now have access to a much faster internet connection. But while this new high speed broadband seems great only a few of us will be able to avail of it with this early

roll out plan, unfortunately for now the only homes that will able to avail of this glorious high speed broadband is Dundrum while the rest of will just simply have to struggle on with our slow, ordinary broadband till sometime in 2014.

Yaris is Toyota’s best-selling core model in Europe, with more than 2.5 million units sold since the first generation model was introduced in 1999. With its latest development, it becomes the only car in the B-segment to offer the option of three types of powertrain: petrol, diesel and full hybrid.

The new model combines the ingenious packaging and urban agility of Yaris with the smooth, refined driving quality and efficiency of Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive to mark a major step forward in the company’s European strategy for the introduction of full hybrids across its model range.

With high fuel efficiency, low environmental impact, strong acceleration, great manoeuvrability and EV capability, it is ideally suited for urban driving.

Toyota has comprehensively revised its full hybrid powertrain so that it can be installed in Yaris without diminishing the system’s quality and performance, or reducing the size of the passenger accommodation and loadspace. The downsized hybrid system combines a substantially re-engineered 1.5-litre petrol engine with a lighter, more compact electric motor, transaxle, inverter and battery pack.

These qualities further strengthen Yaris as an ideal choice for urban motoring, particularly as fuel prices continue to nudge record high levels. Toyota’s internal test data show that Yaris Hybrid can cover a high proportion of urban journey times and distances with its petrol engine switched off, which means more money saved at the pumps.

MORE COMPACTHyBRID BATTERy

The downsized full hybrid powertrain also features a smaller, 144V nickel-metal hydride battery with a more efficient vehicle electric power management system. The number of cells has been cut from the 168 in Auris Hybrid’s battery to 120, made up of 20 modules connected in series. This reduces battery volume by 20 per cent and weight by 11kg, allowing the unit to be accommodated entirely beneath the rear seats, with no intrusion into the boot.

Even though the battery is smaller and lighter, its charging efficiency has been improved, with a reduction of 67 per cent in the pack state-of-charge recovery time compared to Auris Hybrid.

DESIGNThe current Yaris has further advanced the model’s historic

development concept of being compact on the outside but roomy on the inside, consistently setting new standards for clever packaging.

Yaris Hybrid inherits the same ingenious design, giving customers an appealing combination of compact exterior dimensions with a relatively spacious and practical interior.

It differentiates itself from other Yaris versions with the addition of a series of aerodynamically efficient exterior design details. Face-on it displays the stronger front-end treatment that is a signature feature in Toyota’s new design language, with a larger trapezoidal lower grille. This not only improves engine bay cooling, but serves to strengthen the car’s ground-hugging appearance.

The slimmer, sculpted upper grille carries the Toyota badge in hybrid blue and is flanked by slim headlights that add emphasis to the strong horizontal lines in the frontal design. The projector-type lamp units, exclusive to Yaris Hybrid, have chrome finishing with LED daytime running lights.

AGILE HANDLING AND RESPONSIVE STEERING

Yaris Hybrid has the standard Yaris’s proven combination of MacPherson strut front and torsion beam rear suspension, but modifications have been made to spring and damper rates to take into account the change in weight distribution.

The independent front suspension also benefits from the weight-saving and vibration reduction measures introduced in the current Yaris model, optimising the system’s road tracking performance while delivering the appropriate ride, safety, comfort, agility and grip.

The rear torsion beam also benefits from the mass reduction measures and system enhancements introduced with the current generation Yaris to cut vibration levels and improve ride comfort and vehicle agility.

Regenerative braking and low rolling resistance tyresYaris Hybrid is equipped with an Electronically Controlled

Braking system which co-ordinates control of both hydraulic and regenerative braking, which maximises the regeneration of energy by the electric motor during deceleration and under braking.

Ventilated front discs and solid rear discs are fitted to give powerful, progressive and well-balanced braking.

SAFETyThe safety equipment features fitted as standard to Yaris Hybrid

mirror those provided on the standard Yaris, which helped that car achieve a top five-star crash safety rating from Euro NCAP.

Elements include seven airbags, including twin-chamber front airbags and a driver’s knee airbag; ABS with EBD and brake assist;

and (switchable) Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) with traction control.

The front seatbelts are equipped with pretensioners and force limiters, and Isofix child seat mounts are provided on the outer rear seats.

Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive system is designed for low maintenance and high durability. It operates without a clutch, starter motor, alternator and timing belt, as found in conventional petrol and diesel models, so there is no requirement for these parts to be maintained or replaced, which means lower costs for the customer over several years of ownership. And thanks to the efficiency of the Electronically Controlled Braking system, brake pads can last for up to 60,000 miles before needing replacement.

Thanks to longer component life and reduced labour times, Yaris Hybrid’s maintenance costs over 60,000 miles are expected to be among the lowest in its segment. The hybrid battery is rigorously assessed for performance and durability, backed up by 14 years’ service in Toyota hybrid vehicles, and is designed to last the car’s lifetime.

Its specs reflect eight years of dramatic technological advancement since the 360s debut: It sports a vastly more powerful eight-core processor, sixteen times the RAM of the original 360, a much more capable version of kinect that now lets you make Skype video calls in HD, advanced Wi-Fi, a Blu-ray drive, HDMI input and output, and three — count ‘em: three — operating systems. (As Microsoft explained, the box has an Xbox OS, a special version of Windows and a bridging OS which melds the two into one experience.)

But while the Xbox One is all-new from a technology standpoint — it won’t even play Xbox 360 games — it also feels like a continuance of the ideas that Microsoft has been adding to the Xbox 360 since 2005. There’s no radically new concept akin to the two-screen interface that Nintendo gave the Wii U. It’s just that all of the familiar features — games, video, motion input, voice input and more — have been reimagined in ways Microsoft

can only accomplish now that it’s got a modern, forward-looking platform. It’s the Xbox that the Xbox 360 would be if it wasn’t an old-timer.

ERIC Migicovsky didn’t really want a “wearable computer.” When he first conceived of what would become the Pebble smart watch five years ago, as an industrial-design student at Delft University of Technology in the Nether lands, he just wanted a way to use his smartphone without crashing his bicycle. “I thought of creating a watch that could grab information from my phone,” the 26-year-old Canadian says. “I ended up building a prototype in my dorm room.”

Pebble uses Bluetooth to connect wirelessly to an iPhone or Android phone and displays notifications, messages, and other simple data of the user’s choosing on its small black-and-white LCD screen. In April 2012, using the online fund-raising platform kickstarter, Migicovsky asked for $100,000 to help bring Pebble to market. Five weeks later, he had more than $10 million—making his the highest-grossing kickstarter campaign yet. Suddenly smart watches are a real product category: Sony entered the market last year, Samsung is about to, and Apple seems likely to follow.

Although the $150 Pebble watch can be used to control a music playlist or run simple apps like Runkeeper, a cloud-based fitness

tracker, Migicovsky and his team purposely designed the watch to do as little as possible, leaving more complicated apps for phones. This emphasis on making the watch “glanceable” informed nearly every aspect of the design. The black-and-white screen, for example, can be read in direct sunlight and displays content persistently without needing to “sleep” to conserve battery power, as colour or touch-screen displays do.

These watches are coming to market a few months before Google Glass, which is another attempt to solve the problem Pebble addresses—namely, that “interacting with our phones has a certain overhead that doesn’t need to be there,” says Mark Rolston, chief creative officer of Frog Design. But Google Glass will try to replace the smartphone altogether by combining a computer and monitor into eyeglass frames so that wearers can “augment” their view of the world with data. That lines up with predictions about the advent of wearable computing, but it’s easy to see Pebble’s idea being much more popular. By making use of a watch—a classic accessory—Pebble is trying to fit in to long-standing social norms rather than create new ones.

Alice In Chains - “The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here”

This will be Alice In Chains 5th studio album since their formation in 1987, which is kind of hard to believe, as they

have made such an impact on the rock music world.

Although, Alice in Chains have always been plagued by extended inactivity from 1996 onwards due to vocalists Layne Staley’s substance abuse, which resulted in his death in 2002. The band reunited in 2005 with new lead vocalist William DuVall and released their fourth studio album, Black Gives Way to Blue, in 2009. The album was a success, being certified gold by the RIAA in 2010. They hope to repeat that success with this album “The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here”.

Founding member and guitarist Jerry Cantrell has said that “I don’t think you’ll be surprised by anything you hear. ... It’s us. But it’s also really

unique. It’s got all the elements of any record we’ve put out, but it’s unlike any record we’ve put out. Basically, it’s the next chapter in the Alice in Chains book, and it’s going to be a big one.” He also said “In my opinion, Black Gives Way to Blue stood up to anything else we’ve put out in our career. Hopefully, the new album will connect with people in the same way.” Cantrell also stated “There’s some real filth in there. That’s intentional, and that’s also just how we sound together. We’re trying to make a record that we dig and we’re trying to keep the bar high for ourselves and see if we can get past it, and I think that we did again. And of course you want people to dig it too and to respond to it, and to have that start happening is satisfying”.

The cover artwork features the skull of a Triceratops with a second skull image

steganographically hidden on a red background. The two skulls, when revealed, combine to form the image of the Devil.

“The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here” album title refers to a belief held by some religious individuals that to confuse the masses of humanity, Satan himself planted dinosaur bones deep into the Earth to dissuade the faithful. For the lyrics, Jerry Cantrell stated: “The devil put dinosaurs here / Jesus don’t like a queer / No problem with faith / Just fear,” which appear in the title track.

The album contains 12 songs and was released on the 28th of May.

Body&Soul is a festival full of surprises. They’re more about atmospheric engineering than main attractions and hype. They want their festival-goers to enjoy an “experience”

rather than just a gig and are sustainability conscious, without being too-in-your-face; unique rather than boutique.

The three-day festival takes place annually across the weekend of the 21st -23rd of June, around one of Ireland’s oldest feasts: Midsummer’s or The Summer Solstice. Some of this years acts are as follows: Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Public Image Ltd, Wallis Bird, RSAG, Nicolas Jaar, Fish Go Deep and many more.

The festival is just one hour from Dublin, it is set across the 300 acre estate of Ballinlough Castle, which has a private lake, surrounding woodlands and fifteenth century walled gardens.

Body&Soul was fired up by a dedicated group of creative people all sharing a mutual love of art, music, performance and a good old-fashioned party.

Starting off as an idea, shaped and coloured by festivals like Burning Man in the Nevada Desert and the age-old art of celebration, Body&Soul carves an alternative world for artists, musicians and like-minded people to get together, to share ideas and stories that result in a unique and indescribable magic – an atmosphere so often lost in generic festivals and productions.

The festival has sold-out in the last three years and has seen much critical success. They were voted ’Best Small Festival 2011, with the 2010 festival winning both ‘Best New Festival’ and ‘Social Responsibility Award’ at the Irish Festival Awards. And they’re in to the little things that make a festival great.

Once I Was an Eagle is the fourth album by British singer-songwriter Laura Marling. The album, according to Marling, is the “plain[est]” album she has written. She has commented that it follows a central figure, who angrily shuns

naïvety and love, and over the course of the album regains a “second naïvety”. The album is written in three tunings, which mark the basic changes in emotion. The first half (“Take The Night Off ” to “Devil’s Resting Place”) has a darker, more melancholic tone, whereas the second half (“Undine” to “Saved These Words”) has a more upbeat and open tone, if not jubilant. Marling has stated that there is a greater cohesion to ‘Once I Was An Eagle’, in terms of themes and the development of the music. Many critics have noted that the first half feels more like a continuous idea, exacerbated by the first four songs (“Take The Night Off ”, “I Was An Eagle”, “You know” and “Breathe”) which flow together as one.

Unlike her previous three albums, she chose not to work with a band, and instead enlisted the help of producer Ethan Johns and cellist, Ruth de Turberville, to assist with the album’s production. Marling recorded the album in 10 days at Three Crows studio in Bath, England. Seemingly the guitar and vocals were recorded live in one take.

Laura Marling - “Once I Was An Eagle”

In an interview with a US magazine in July 1993, Nirvana front-man kurt Cobain claims that he sensed he was from Ireland, the closeness he felt to our little island when walking around Cork

city. Above is a picture taking of kurt Cobain outside The Old Grand Parade Hotel, Cork City(pic by Trevor Finnegan), which has been doing its rounds on the internet this week. Below is an extract from the interview.

Interviewer: Did you like the Beatles?

Cobain: Oh, yeah. My mother always tried to keep a little bit of British culture in our family. We'd drink tea all the time! I never really knew about my ancestors until this year, when I learned that the name Cobain was Irish. My parents have never bothered to find that stuff out. I found out by looking though phone books throughout America for names that were similar to mine. I couldn't

find any Cobain's at all, so I started calling Coburns. I found this one lady in San Francisco who had been researching our family history for years.

Interviewer: So it was Coburn?

Cobain: Actually it was Cobain, but the Coburns screwed it up when they came over. They came from County Cork, which is a really weird coincidence, because when we toured Ireland, we played in Cork and the entire day I walked around in a daze. I'd never felt more spiritual in my life. It was the weirdest feeling and I have a friend who was with me who could testify to this. I was almost in tears the whole day. Since that tour, which was about two years ago, I've had a sense that I was from Ireland.

This is in reference to the gig they played on the 20th of August

1991 in a venue called Sir Henry`s pub in Cork. This was part of Nirvana`s European tour with Sonic Youth.

Nine months after the interview was recorded, Cobain was dead. His body was discovered on April 8th, 1994 - a day which he was originally scheduled to be performing at the Point Theatre in Dublin.

kurt was full blooded Irish on his fathers side (the name Cobain is a form of Coburn, Gaelic and Northhumbrian origins) and some of this race`s assertiveness spoke as he grew up. As Beverley Cobain (kurts sister) says, “You have to remember kurt was Irish on his fathers side and German on his mothers, from whom he got his emotional, hyper sensitive streak. Its a volatile combination”.

Just another superstar to add to the list of famous people with an Irish heritage.
