Dear All, You probably know that Theo (9th grade) is a keen chess player! You may not know that he writes for the world’s oldest chess magazine (and has done so since he was 12 years old – he is their youngest ever writer). This month he discusses the differences be-tween US & UK chess and OCVS even gets a mention! Theo’s article is on page 40/64 – I thought you might be interested to take a look. Theo played in Cocoa Beach [in April] and had his best tournament to date in the US, finishing joint first in his section, winning $352 - he was very happy! Regards, Andrew Slade

Mona Lisa

The bidders around me raise their hands in silent auction hoping the auctioneer accepts their bid Sometimes I bid and I win but I’ve bid on nothing but a lamp because unlike the other bidders I couldn’t afford the Mona Lisa

But still I take my lamp to the department store, I ask an employee to find me a light bulb and as I'm waiting I see the other bidders buying frames for their new paintings and they hang it on the bedroom walls and stare at it for hours not asking what it means but asking who painted it and they don’t care to wonder why they don’t already know that

And with my lamp I light my room, and my barren walls keep me from getting distracted and I use my light to read on ‘The Last Supper’, and I think that it reminds me of the Apostles Creed And I wonder why that’s something I’ll never get a chance to bid on.

But it doesn’t matter because the rich tell me to bid on something better, because it’s not that hard to make more money if I just got a better job and the auctioneer is on a strict schedule and has no time to show me how to maximize my bidding And so I’m labeled indolent And I label them arrogant

But they’ll always bid the highest And they’ll always know the significance of the years 1503 to 1517 But I know the Mona Lisa’s real name and I wonder why they think she’s not smiling.

OCVS received prestigious recognition from US News & World Report based on our ability to serve all students, help push stu-dents toward post-secondary suc-cess and demonstrate high perfor-mance in measurable academic outcomes. These outcomes include: 1. Higher than average perfor-mance on statewide assessments adjusting for the percentage of economically disadvantaged stu-dents. 2. Higher than average perfor-mance on statewide assessments for Black, Hispanic and low-income students when compared to similar students across the state. 3. Meeting a higher than expected benchmark for their graduation rate. 4. School performance on college-readiness as measured by Ad-vanced Placement and Interna-tional Baccalaureate assessments. They also received bronze level recognition for their place-ment in the top-third of the coun-try. Out of 28,651 public high schools in the United States, 19,908 were large enough to be eligible for inclusion in the rankings. Written by: Mrs. Silvers
