Sacred Heart Parish School is dedicated to educating the whole child. We are committed to instilling the ideals of service, justice, and compassion in each of our students. As part of this commitment, we strive to offer enriching experiences that will build our students’ social skills, leadership abilities, and moral awareness, no matter whether they are just beginning their formal education in preschool or whether they are eighth graders preparing for the rigors of high school.

Sacred Heart Parish School has been educating students in the Hollister community for 125 years. This strong sense of tradition can be seen in our large and diverse array of alumni, each of whom were impacted by the Catholic education provided at Sacred Heart. Nestled in downtown Hollister, Sacred Heart seeks to provide our stu-dents with a well-rounded and faith-filled education. Together with our school’s families, we help our students to be academically prepared and grounded in gospel values by providing them an environment where they feel safe to grow, learn, and develop. We provide our students with support that strengthens their spiritual and moral guidance.

Sacred Heart Parish School is committed to faith, service, and academic excellence. We believe these are the cornerstone values of educating faith-filled and intellectual citizens. Our students’ development is not limited only by the classes they take as part of the regular curriculum. Recognizing the necessity of educating the whole student, we provide opportunities in music, physical edu-cation, technology, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), Spanish, and other electives. Through their experiences at Sacred Heart, students will be able to observe life through a creative, analytical, and ethical perspective.

In sum, Sacred Heart Parish School is a community committed and rooted in service, justice, and compassion. We welcome you and thank you for being a part of our community.

God Bless,

Dr. Rachel McKenna,

CATECHESIS CORNER The ins tu on of the Mass con nued...

A Misreading

Fundamentalists are par cularly upset about the Catholic no on that the sacrifice on Calvary is somehow con nued through the centuries by the Mass. They think Catholics are try-ing to have it both ways. The Church on the one hand says that Calvary is “perpetuated,” which seems to mean that the same act of killing, the same le ng of blood, is repeated again and again. This violates the “once for all” idea. On the other hand, what Catholics call a sacrifice seems to have no rela on to bibli-cal sacrifices, since it does not look the same; a er all, no splotches of blood are to be found on Catholic altars. “We must, of course, take strong excep on to such pretend-ed sacrifice,” Boe ner instructs. “We cannot regard it as any-thing other than a decep on, a mockery, and an abomina on before God. The so-called sacrifice of the Mass certainly is not iden cal with that on Calvary, regardless of what the priests may say. There is in the Mass no real Christ, no suffering, and no bleeding. And a bloodless sacrifice is ineffectual. The writer of the book of Hebrews says that ‘apart from shedding of blood there is no remission’ of sin (9:22); and John says, ‘The blood of Jesus his Son cleanseth us from all sin’ (1 John 1:7). Since ad-mi edly there is no blood in the Mass, it simply cannot be a sacrifice for sin” (174). Boe ner misreads chapter 9 of Hebrews, which begins with an examina on of the Old Covenant. Moses is described as tak-ing the blood of calves and goats and using it in the purifica on of the tabernacle (cf. Heb. 9:19–21; see Ex. 24:6–8 for the ori-gins of this). Under the Old Law, a repeated blood sacrifice was necessary for the remission of sins. Under the Chris an dispen-sa on, blood (Christ’s) is shed only once, but it is con nually offered to the Father. “But how can that be?” ask Fundamentalists. They have to keep in mind that “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and for ever” (Heb. 13:8). What Jesus did in the past is present to God now, and God can make the sacrifice of Calvary present to us at Mass. “For as o en as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death un l he comes” (1 Cor. 11:26). Jesus does not offer himself to God as a bloody, dying sacri-fice in the Mass, but as we offer ourselves, a “living sacri-fice” (Rom. 12:1). As this passage indicates, the offering of sacri-fice does not require death or the shedding of blood. If it did, we could not offer ourselves as living sacrifices to God. Jesus, having shed his blood once for all on the cross, now offers him-self to God in a con nual, unbloody manner as a holy, living sac-rifice on our behalf. END OF “THE INSTITUTION OF THE MASS”

Who Can Receive Communion? The Holy Eucharist is the most important of the seven sacra-ments because, in this and in no other sacrament, we receive the very body and blood, soul and divinity of Jesus Christ. Innu-merable, precious graces come to us through the recep on of Holy Communion. Communion is an in mate encounter with Christ in which we sacramentally receive Christ into our bodies, that we may be more completely assimilated into his. “The Eucharist builds the Church” (Redemptor Hominis 20), as Pope John Paul II said. It deepens unity with the Church, more fully assimila ng us into Christ (cf. 1 Cor. 12:13; CCC 1396). The Eucharist also strengthens the individual because in it Jesus himself, the Word made flesh, forgives our venial sins and gives us the strength to resist mortal sin. It is also the very chan-nel of eternal life: Jesus himself. In John’s Gospel, Jesus summarized the reasons for receiving Communion when he said: “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you; he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eter-nal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. As the liv-ing Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats me will live because of me. This is the bread which came down from heaven, not such as the fathers ate and died; he who eats this bread will live for ever” (John 6:53–58). Because of the gravity of Jesus’ teaching on receiving the Eucharist, the Church encourages Catholics to receive frequent Communion, even daily Communion if possible, and mandates recep on of the Eucharist at least once a year during the Easter season. Before going to Communion, however, there are several things one needs to know. To be con nued... Source: Catholic Answers, The Essen al Catholic Survival Guide

Fuente: The Catholic Surivival Guide
