Steve’s Top Five Ways to entice Winter Migrants to YOUR Space: 1. Lots of Resident Birds! Bird activity attracts more Birds. Inevitably, yards with a good quantity and variety of “resident” birds attract more migrants. Build a backyard habitat that draws a steady flow of birds!
2. Perch area and cover Provide a “safe approach” to the feeders in
your yard, by offering several perch areas at varying heights for birds on their way to your feeder. For example: an assortment of trees, shrubs, Shepherd’s hooks or patio fur-niture, where birds can gather, view the feeders, and navigate a path they are comforta-ble with to the food and water. This is particularly important to “non-resident” birds in your yard. Adding extra perch area directly to feeders (ie sticks or dowel rods) can be particularly enticing to winter migrants like native sparrows and winter finches.
3. Moving Water- clean and dependable. “Heated” bird baths in win-
ter with a recirculating waterfall attracts ALL birds. The sound of the fall plus the movement and light reflecting on the water grabs the birds’ attention ...and provides their most important nutrient
4. Food source- clean and dependable. In the winter months, large
platform feeders with abundant millet (not milo) and a variety of other seeds will provide the stability that attracts ground feeders like winter sparrows. High fat suet cakes , Sun-flower hearts and nut pieces are savored by most of our resident birds, but also attracts Sapsuckers, winter warblers, Brown Creepers, and Red-breasted Nuthatches. ALL the birds love Live Mealworms– check out the Yellow-rumped Warbler in the mealworm feeder pictured left.
5. Familiar natural food Common plants that often attract
migrant birds in Fall and Winter include: various dogwood varieties, American Beautyberry, Sweetgum, assorted Oaks and Pines, Eastern red cedar, sumac, Hackberry, and one of our favorite vines: Virginia creeper.
Answers to the Bird ID Quiz on Page One: 1. Yellow-rumped Warbler 2. Yellow-bellied Sapsucker 3. Cedar Waxwing 4. White-crowned Sparrow 5. Red-breasted Nuthatch 6. Pine Siskin 7. Ruby-crowned Kinglet 8. Dark-eyed Junco 9. Common Redpoll 10. White-throated Sparrow 11. Purple Finch

What have BIV friends seen lately? In addition to the species spotted at the Big Sit Bird Count on October 10th (see page 6 of this newsletter) the month started with abun-dant Chimney Swift accounts, as well as a daily report that Eastern Bluebirds had returned to feeding stations around town. Our most re-cent report of a Ruby-throated Hummingbird came in October 12th on Booneville Rd in Jefferson City (as of October 16th). Yellow-rumped Warblers seem to be everywhere –one birder reports flocks of 20+ west of Jefferson City. Female and immature male Summer Tan-
agers have been spotted north and west of town. Lots of Northern Flickers now, some at suet feeders and many in flocks around fields and roadsides. Other birders (besides Big Sit participants) have reported Ruby-crowned Kinglets this month. White-throated sparrow and Dark-eyed Junco reports began around the 9th. House Wrens were observed the 4th—7th coming to mealworms. Red-shouldered and Coopers Hawks have been reported from Holts Summit to JC and surrounding areas. We received a White-crowned Sparrow sighting just this week. We have had quite a few reports of Rose-breasted Grosbeak this month...females, immature males, and adult males. Most have come from the Holts Summit area , but some in JC. One outstanding report was on October 16th of a reported Rose-breasted Grosbeak x Black-headed Grosbeak hybrid. (Observer used a Sibley Guide to establish criteria for the ID). This bird was re-ported from Holt’s Summit. A few Red-headed Woodpeckers have been reported in town as well as a report of a Great-horned Owl. Several of the birds mentioned in the “Big Sit “ List on page 6 have also been spotted elsewhere around Mid-Missouri this month, so be sure to take a look at that list.
We would be greatly interested to hear when someone spots a Pine Siskin or Purple Finch. Keep us posted on all your bird sightings by stopping in to BIV to write them on our “Bird Update List”. Steve and Regina Garr, Birds-I-View
