A PLACE TO BUY AND SELL KNOWLEDGE

Pets are like people; many have allergies and reactions to different foods. Many pet owners have successfully used these recipes, but we are not liable for any adverse

responses your pet may have. We recommend you consult your vet and only give a small amount to see if your pet has ill effects.

Quaker Candy

1 can of garbonzo beans drained and spread out on a cookie sheet. Bake at 350 for 25-30 minutes until the outside looks crispy/golden brown in color.

Cool for about 10 minutes and feed to a slightly hungry Quaker, and watch him/her devour them!! :-)

Muffins

These muffins contain ingredients that may help pluckers stop plucking.

1 8 1/2 oz. package Jiffy Corn Muffin Mix

1 C mashed palm nut fruit* (can substitute 1 C acorn squash, cooked and mashed) 3 large eggs and shells broken into small pieces

3 carrots, cooked and mashed 1 large stalk broccoli florettes, cooked and mashed

3 handfuls pellets, any kind 1/4 C ground walnuts or other nuts or seeds, if desired

1/4 tsp baking soda 1/4 C psyllium seeds (helps liver function) 1/4 C sesame seeds (helps with plucking)

1/4 C flax seed (helps with plucking) 1/2 tsp alfalfa leaf powder (helps with plucking)

1/4 C kelp (helps with plucking) 1/4 C wheat germ (source of vitamin E)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line small-size muffin tin with cupcake papers. Mix everything together well. Spoon into cupcake papers. Fill to top.

Bake for 25 minutes. Let cool, then freeze. Serve 1/4 muffin per Quaker, or 1/2 muffin per African Grey,

Daily.

Makes 18 mini-muffins.

BIRDIE PANCAKES

Make some pancake mix according to your own recipe, mix, etc. DO NOT cook it yet! Mix in some apples, seeds, pellets, basically anything that you have in the house that is

non-toxic for birds, and is able to be cooked. (Maybe even some birdy candy!) Cook them as you normally would cook pancakes...make them about 2 inches in

diameter. Cool and keep one out to feed, store the rest in the freezer.

Whenever you want to feed one to your bird, take one out of the freezer, and let it completely thaw

Birdy Cornbread

1 cup corn meal 1/2 cup flour

1 Tbsp baking powder 1/2 tsp baking soda

1/3 cup applesauce or Karo syrup (light) (instead of oil or shortening) 1 or 2 whole eggs (shell and all)

2 jars any kind of strained veggies (baby food) 1 jar baby apple juice (or any other flavor baby juice)

1 Tbsp dried red peppers handful of pellets, any flavor or brand

1/2 to 1 cup frozen mixed veggies Mix all ingredients together and pour into a 8" X 8" baking dish sprayed with Pam. Bake at 400F degrees for about 20 minutes. I cut the bread into small squares and freeze daily

portions in snack size plastic bags. If each bird gets one square per day, this makes enough to last 2 birds about 2 weeks.

Birdy Balls

Start with a bowl of approx. 1/2 cup of 7 grain raw oatmeal (health food store, bulk)

chop up about 1/4 cup raw almonds add in about a 1/4 cup of several of the following....

granola

rice crispy cereal cheerios

dried cracked corn leftover crushed pellets (I always have a LOT of these!)

raisins, chopped prunes, dates, apricots, dried cranberries, etc whatever dry goods you have around that the birds might like!

Add in 1 Tablespoon of wheat germ 1 teaspoon of spirulina powder (optional)

Stir ..........peanut butter, (you can use a brand that you have a coupon for but you can get pure fresh peanut butter at your natural food store) and add a big scoop.. maybe two

tablespoons of the peanut butter, stir very well, mashing it a bit to blend the peanut butter well.

Add enough cockatiel seed or parrot seed* ( about 1/2 cup) to hold the entire mix together. You want to be able to shape small balls with the mixture. Make the balls about the same size as Nutriberries. (This is a good size for the Quakers to hold in their foot.)

Place formed balls on waxed paper in a Tupperware/Rubbermaid container and keep refrigerated.

Walnut Raisin Balls

1 1/3 Cup Wheat Germ

2 Cups raisins 3/4 Cup chopped walnuts

8 graham crackers crushed fine 1 1/2 Cup peanut butter

4 Tbs. honey extra chopped nuts

Put all ingredients into a mixing bowl. Mix until everything is blended and holds together. Roll into small balls with your hands and roll in the extra chopped nuts.

Refrigerate leftovers.

This is a "forgiving" recipe. It makes a lot and since I have only 3 birds I usually make only a third of it. I have frozen these without any problem or complaints from the boys!

Nutri-Berry Birdie Bread

baggies for 3 days. Don't keep birdie bread in the refrigerator for more then three days. ----

Mix together... 1 cup chopped cranberries (you can use fresh or frozen)

2 TBSP. of cracked wheat 2 cups of seven grain cereal

1 cup of oatmeal about 2 tsp. of baking powder

Add..... a dab of orange juice

leftover cooked rolls or cornbread could also be added.

BIRDIE FRENCH TOAST

pureed fresh mango, papaya or kiwi (reduce number of jars of baby food)

Parrot Breads Batch #1

My first batch was made with Corn Muffin mix (Jiffy mixes are commonly 3/$1 or less). I added a small (individual size) can of mixed fruit, a personal sized small box of raisins, two tablespoons of peanut butter and some powdered bird vitamins. I baked it in a pyrex

loaf dish. You could make muffins; it doesn't matter. When it was cool, I sliced it into chunks and froze them in a bread bag. Then I reheat what I will use at one time in the

microwave. Serve it warm or cool. Make sure it's not hot!

Parrot Breads Batch #2

First, I ground some rejected "parrot pellets" into a powder using a blender. The second batch started with bran muffin mix to which I added a small can of mixed vegetables, the pellet powder, and some leftover baked beans (here's another way to use up leftovers) and

parrot vitamins (powdered).

Parrot Breads Batch #3 For my next batch, I'll start with oatmeal muffin mix. The Jiffy mix uses one egg and

milk. I use water and dry milk because it has less fat. I would suggest using a whole grain muffin mix, like the corn, bran or oatmeal, instead of plain. Basically follow batches 1

&2.

Honey Treats

Ingredients:

Honey Millet seed A big bowl

Cookie Sheet

Instructions:

This is a sweet treat that all birds love. Put some seed in a large bowl depending on how much you want. Add honey and mix with hands until the seeds are compleatly covered in honey but clumpy. Roll mixture into quarter size balls and flatten. (If you are a real bird lover you can put the mixture into candy molds.) Let the mixture sit over night or if you cant wait that long put the candies on a cookie and bake at 350 until compleately hard.

Sweet Potato Balls

1 large sweet potato, microwaved until soft 1/2 cup raisins

1 mashed banana 1 cup mixed fresh or frozen mixed vegetables

1 cup diced apples 1 1/2 cup uncooked oatmeal, corn flakes or granola cereal.

Mix all together and add enough fruit or vegetable juice to make it form small balls.

Freeze balls individually. Defrost and serve

Tails Up Good!

1 c cornmeal 1 c wheatgerm

1/4 c groats 1/4 c buckwheat

1/4 c soybeans finely ground 1/4 c nuts coarsely ground

1/8 c olive oil 1 c fresh/frozen corn cooked

1 c shredded carrots 1c greens chopped 5 eggs shell and all

1 apple chopped fine 1/2 cup soy milk

left over rice or beans (optional)

Mix all ingredients together. Prepare 9x13 inch pan with olive oil. Bake at 400 degrees for 20 minutes, then at 350 degrees for another 30 minutes or until done.

Fruit and Veggie Popsicles

1 apple 1 carrot 1 orange

several grapes 1 tomato

1 green pepper Any other fruits and veggie your bird might eat

Put the ingredients on a cutting board and dice them finely (except for the orange). Place

the ingrdients in a bowl. Cut the orange and squeeze (over the bowl) until it is out of juice. Pack your ingredients into a ball and stick in a wooden popsicle stick. Wrap with wax paper and put in freezer. Let it sit for an hour. Take out and give it to your bird (my

bird likes the popsicle stick the best!).

Sweet Rice Mash

4 coarsley grated sweet potatoes 2 bags brown rice 1 can carrot juice

1 can veggie baked beans (rinsed to remove excess sugar) 1 bag small shell pasta

Boil rice using carrot juice added to the water until almost done. Add in sweet potaoes

and pasta (adding a little more water if needed - just enough to keep from sticking - you want it to fully absorb). Stir often. Add in rinsed baked beans, stir some more. I divide it

up into several zip freezer bags and then take out what I need each day.

EARLY BIRD BREAD RECIPE

2 packages of corn bread mix (not sweetened corn muffin mix!) frozen vegetable of choice (chopped fresh, or rinsed canned are both OK

frozen fruit of choice (chopped fresh, or unsweetened canned are both OK) hulled raw unsalted sunflower seeds (available at bulk food stores near snacks)

raisins hulled raw millet seed (available at bulk food stores near cereal section)

fruit juice (orange, apple, etc.) (using more than one kind is OK) eggs (1 more than packages call for)

Preheat oven following bread mix instructions. Grease 7" x 10" cake pan. Follow instructions on package for number of eggs used, then add one more egg.

Substitute fruit juices for milk required by mix. Add approximately 1/2 cup of hulled sunflower seeds, and approximately

1/2 to 3/4 cup each of frozen veggie and frozen fruit. Add handful of raisins.

Mix all ingredients together well. Pour into heavily greased 9"x 13" cake pan.

Sprinkle small handful of hulled millet seeds over top. Bake until cake pulls away from sides of pan and is golden brown on top

(it should be hard on top, but not burned.) Let cool completely, then cut into small (1") cubes.

Place cubes and any crumbled pieces in a plastic bag or container, and freeze. To use, just remove one or two cubes and thaw, then crumble up into bird's dish.

Vitamins or wheatgrass powder can be sprinkled over the cooled, baked cake. For one bird, this should last several weeks. Use as a treat to supplement the regular diet.

In emergencies, this can be served in place of regular food.

For Variety:

Try using cooked beans, pasta or dry bird pellets instead of frozen vegetable.

Or mix in 1/2 cup of applesauce (reduce other liquid by 1/4 cup). Mix in 1/4 cup of pellets, increase liquid by 1/4 cup to account for pellets absorbing some

liquid. Or add 4-6 "fruity ice" cubes (see below), thawed, and 1/2 cup melted peanut butter,

to make "PB&J" bird bread!

FRUITY ICE

several types of fresh fruits, any combination, diced into pieces. Puree fruits in blender or food processor until smooth and mixed.

Pour into ice cube trays, and freeze until solid. Keep frozen, stored in freezer containers or plastic bags.

To serve, remove 1-2 cubes per bird, thaw slightly. Some of my birds actually seem to prefer the frozen fruit, especially in summer!

EASY BIRD BREAD RECIPE

This recipe produces a heavy, dense bread that doesn't easily fall apart, making it easier to store and freeze.

2 cups baking mix (Bisquick, Jiffy, Aunt Martha, etc.)

2 cups white or yellow corn meal 1 cup whole wheat flour

2 tablespoons baking powder 4 eggs

3 6-ounce jars of pureed fruit or vegetable baby food, any combination Any additions you choose to include (cheese, chopped fruit or vegetables, nuts, peanut

butter, etc.) Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Heavily grease one 9"x13" cake pan.

Mix all dry ingredients together well in large bowl. Add eggs and baby food. Stir until all ingredients are evenly moist.

Batter will be very thick and heavy. Pour batter into cake pan. Bake approximately 40 minutes, or until cake pulls away from sides of pan.

Cool completely, cut into small cubes. Reserve enough for 2-3 days, and freeze the rest. Thaw as needed.

MILLET & RICE

1 part cup cooked hulled millet 1 part cup white rice, cooked 1 part cup brown rice, cooked

Soak millet in water for 20 minutes prior to cooking. Mix together with rice and serve warmed.

AMBROSIA

2 medium oranges peeled 1 small banana cut into slices

20-30 seedless grapes, quartered if your birds are smaller 1 cup strawberries cut in half.

1 small apple cut into bird-sized pieces Combine all ingredients and toss well. Can be frozen until further use.

SEED BELLS

You need:(for one bell - you can multiply as needed)

One small terracotta pot (unused) with hole in bottom One oven bag side (ie 1 oven-bag makes two seed bells)

One cup of your bird's favourite seed mix (ie millet/sunflower/safflower/poppy/hulled oats)

One egg white, lightly beaten. One piece of safe wire, small hooked at top and big loop at bottom (ie 2" 90% base angle)

Mix seeds and egg-white together in bowl. Line pot with one sheet of oven bag

Pour most of seed mix in pot Poke hooked end into mix and through hole at end of pot (I said SMALL hook,

remember?) Make sure flat base of wire is firmly into mix, top up with remaining mix.

Place pots on oven rack in upright position with wire hanging down below

Bake in slow oven (ie low heat) for 90 minutes

Remove with oven gloves (the wire will be hot so be careful!), tip out of pots, remove paper and PRESTO! You have healthy birdie-snacks that cost very little and will keep

your baby amused for hours/days!

You can customise this recipe however you like. I'm planning pumpkin seeds for my next endeavour!

BIRDIE BLEND

This is very easy to make, freezes well, and my tiel and budgies love it:

1 cup brown rice 1/4 cup dried split peas

1/4 cup dried lentils 1/4 cup dried yellow split peas

2 cups water Put it all in a saucepan and cook for about 40 minutes. Add extra water if necessary.

This freezes well. I usually make a double or triple batch and freeze a lot of it. Break the

frozen mixture into chunks and thaw or microwave when you need it.

Summer Treat

This is a very simple recipe that requires no cooking!

Ingredients:

Fruit juice(Depends on which fruit your bird likes)

Apples, Mango, Pear, etc.(your Birds' FAV Fruits)

Carrot (OPT)

Procedure:

Freeze the fruit juice. In the mean time, cut the fruits into small pieces. Take out the fruit juice when it is 70% frozen. Put the fruits into the juice. (There should be more fruits

than juice). Serve. Note: Avoid putting too much mango as it may be ' heaty'.

CORN CRITTER BREAD

1 box of Corn Bread Mix (Jiffy works well) 1 14 oz. can of drained corn

1 whole egg (put it in the blender shell and all) Fruit Juice (unsweetened)

Follow instructions for your cornbread mix EXCEPT substitute fruit juice for milk. Add corn. Bake according to instructions. Cut into 1" squares and freeze unused portion for

later (thaw before using).

Quaker Delight

1/4 c. pinto beans 1/4 c. kidney beans

1/4 c. split peas 1/4 c. lentils

1/4 c. navy beans 1 c. cooked brown rice 1 c. cooked white rice

1 carrot (chopped) 1 c. frozen corn (thawed)

Soak beans overnight. Add carrots and cook with beans for one hour. Add corn and rice

and cook till warm. Cool and serve.

Store excess in leak proof containers.

Juicy Fruit

1/2 cantaloupe 1 bunch seedless grapes

1 large orange

Cut cantaloupe into pieces your birds can handle. Peel orange and cut into pieces. Mix all together with grapes. This mixture can be frozen in bags and served daily.

PRETTY BIRD PUDDING

Take a cup of "Pretty Bird" and grind the pellets into smaller pieces or a powder using a coffee grinder or blender. Add warm water while

mixing, or after grinding, to achieve a pudding like consistency. Mix well till smooth, and serve to birds.

You can vary the size of the pellets/grains during grinding, and the amount of water added, to suit the preferences of a particular bird. Some birds will prefer a "soup" with

the broken up pellet bits floating. Fruits and fruit juice can also be added, as well as wheat germ and other healthy ingredients.

Beakers Best Birdie Pizza

1 ready made pizza crust or use your own recipe eliminating the salt 1 jar baby food mixed garden vegetables

1/4 cup chopped green bell pepper 1/4 cup shredded carrot

1/4 cup chopped broccoli 2 tbs wheat germ

2 tbs wheatgrass powder 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella

Spread baby food on the crust. Sprinkle carrot, broccoli and bell peppers. Sprinkle

cheese, wheat germ and wheatgrass powder over all and bake according to directions for your crust.

Birdy Pot Pie

1 cup mixed veggies (garbonzo beans, green beans, peas, carrots, corn) 1 can cream of potato soup

1/2 Cup Bisquick Mix 1 Cup Milk

2 Eggs

Mix veggies and soup and put on bottom of greased 91/2 pie pan. Preheat oven 400F. Mix last 3 items w/ fork until firmly beaten, pour on top of veggies. Cook for 20 minutes

or until top is golden brown, let cool.

Cookies

1 cup dried fruit (any of your birds favorites-i.e.apricots, apples, figs, dates, coconut, etc.) 1/2 cup uncooked oatmeal

1/2 cup raisins 1/4 cup hulled seeds and/or crushed nuts (I use sunflower seeds, cashews, peanuts, and

walnuts) 1 Tbs peanut butter

2 Tbs honey

In a food processor, process all ingredients together except for the honey and peanut butter. You will have a sticky glob to put into a medium size bowl. Add the peanut butter

and honey and stir until it gets too thick. Then use your hands to knead the rest to a "rollable" consistency. Make 1/2 inch balls and place them on a cookie sheet. Bake at 350 for about 20 minutes. Cool and serve. They are quite delicious (you'll like them too), and

they're just the right size for my Scarlet Macaw," Coconut", to hold.

Birdie Waffles

Waffle batter, grated apples, carrots and brocolli. You can use veggies and fruit of any kind. Mix together and make up waffles for your Fids. Freeze in single servings and pop

in the toaster for breakfast or dinner. All my Fids love them.

Pancake Breakfast

1 box of just add water pancake mix Prepare as directed only using orange juice or apple juice instead of water. You can also

add bird vitamins to mixture if necessary. Any left over pancakes can be frozen or refrigerated and reheated in microwave for later use.

Recipe is versatile, so you can add any combination of fruits or nuts if you want to, like mashed bananas, or blueberries etc. My African Grey is very finicky and hard to please,

but he loves those pancakes and gets his vitamins as well. Try it and see.

Scrambled Eggs and Vegetables

2 eggs 2 Tbs low fat ricotta cheese

1/4 cup shredded carrots 1/4 cup chopped broccoli

Scramble eggs with shells and ricotta cheese in a bowl. Pour into a frying pan and add

vegetables. Cook until eggs are firm.

Treat Sticks

Untreated fruit tree twigs (or lollipop sticks) 2 cups of seeds, nuts, dried fruit and egg biscuit in variable quantities (to suit your bird's

tastes) egg

honey

Preheat the twigs/sticks in a warm oven (150 degrees C). Mix dry ingredients together and bind with the egg. Press the mixture onto the twigs/sticks (this bit is very messy, but fun!) Bake in the oven at 200 degrees C for 20-30 minutes until toasted. Brush the honey over the treat sticks and return to the oven for a further 5 minutes. Allow to cool. Serve

and watch your birds demolish all your hard work with relish!!!

Bird Treats

1 whole lettuce leaf 1 cup of dry oat meal

1 carrot (peeled) 1/2 apple

5 blueberries

What to do: Blend all the ingredients together until they are in a real fine paste. Then scoop out the paste, set onto a plate (I suggest pounding it into a shape such as a circle or heart) and put it into a microwave for two minutes. After heating the ingredients up, let it

cool off for two more minutes (it can be very hot and it can burn the bird).

Buddy Bars

1 ripe banana 1 1/2 cups (approx) Cheerios type cereal

1 egg (shell and all, cleaned) 1/3 cup chunky applesauce

1/2 cup crunchy peanut butter 1/3 cup raisins (optional)

Place the Cheerios in a ziplock baggie and crush with a rolling pin - ONLY SLIGHTLY (enough to be broken into small pieces, not pulverized into dust!). Mush the banana well

in a large bowl and add all the other ingredients, stirring well. Spoon into a lightly greased 8 or 9 inch square pan and bake for about 45 minutes at 300. Allow to cool and

cut into bars, depending on your bird's size. Buddy, my conure, LOVES these!

Crunchy Treat for a Picky Tiel

. The amounts are very approx as it depends on how many birds you have. I only have one so this made about 25 or so little cakes.

eggshells from 2 eggs, pulverized and sterilized in oven

small carrot, scrubbed well, skin on, grated 1/4 cup creamy peanut butter

some honey bird's fave pellets (I used Kaytee Exact for Cockatiels)

Kaytee Garden Veggie Treat (pick out sunflower seeds since they don't work well in recipe)

1 egg yolk, some egg white (from the eggshells you used) sesame seed

Mix all ingredients together until well blended. Spread on ungreased cookie sheet about 1/4 inch thick, and form sort of a squarish mound of it. Bake in 250 degree oven 45min.

Halfway through cooking, score into small pieces, so you have about 25 or so. Finish cooking, remove from oven, let cool completely. Remove from cookie sheet, transfer to plate and break up into pieces. Offer your tiel one or two pieces every week. Discard any

uneaten portion from treat dish after a week. I keep mine on a plate wrapped in plastic wrap and this treat keeps well for several weeks in a cool, dry place. Xena enjoys picking

this treat apart and eating it throughout the day.

Parrotlet Edible Car- a tasty source of veggies, fruits, & treats Ingredients:

two large carrots a couple of raisins

celery stick cut in half peanut butter (chunky or creamy)

toothpicks

Then rest the celery stick on the peanut butter/carrot. Spread some more peanut butter on top of the celery stick and sprinkle the raisins on it. Last, stick the toothpick wheels on the sides of the

carrot. *** Supervise your bird when down to the wheels - just in case

Peanut Butter Seed Bar

Peanut butter Your birds favorite seed

Cardboard paper towel tube or something like it with holes punched in sides String

Tie string to carboard tube through the holes, then spread peanut butter all over the paper

tube. Then roll it in the seed and there ya go!

Cornmeal Fantasy

If you can boil water and stir, you can make your birds very happy! ! This recipe is similar to a flan or soft pudding. You need only fine ground corn flour, available in most supermarkets. Stir it into boiling water until it starts to thicken, and continue stirring for another minute or two. At this point, you have a soft pudding. If you want to embellish

the recipe, you can add pumpkin puree, apple sauce, or baby food fruits or veggies.

I think you may be surprised just how much your birds like this simple food. You'll have no problem finding a feathered friend to "lick the spoon"! My birds just call it YUM! It

can be refrigerated for several days or frozen in squares for later use

measuring one-half inch to three-quarter inches in diameter. Place on a lightly greased cookie sheet and bake at 325 degrees for 20 to 30 minutes. Cool on a rack and keep in the refrigerator. Also freezes well. Makes 90 to 100 balls. My umbrella cockatoo and African

grey both love these and will do just about anything to get one! I think they're much healthier than many of the bird treats in the pet stores.

1/4 cup dry powdered kelp 1/4 cup alfalfa powder

Rinse the beans, grains and rice. Soak overnight (at least 8 hours) in a large pot. In the morning add or remove water as needed to cover beans with about one inch of water.

Boil beans for 10 minutes. Reduce heat, cover and simmer for 20 minutes more. By this time there should just be enough water left to keep beans moist. Scrub, quarter and slice

potatoes into 1/8 inch pieces. Steam lightly, stirring every few minutes, and add to cooked beans. Add corn, peas, carrots and green beans to bean and potato mixture. This

helps cool the mixture and thaw the frozen vegetables. Hand chop or lightly food process the next 11 ingredients (parsley, zucchini, tomatoes, mustard greens, bananas, apples,

oranges, cranberries, mango, papayas and grapes). Don't process too finely; birds prefer chunky food. Add the remaining ingredients and mix thoroughly. Freeze in sandwich

bags in daily serving portions. Defrost servings in refrigerator for 24 hours. Warm food by placing the bag in warm water.

Pasta and Rice

Dinnertime Carbo Munchie Delite

Pasta

Spaghetti Carrots and broccoli, chopped finely

Frozen vegtables Fresh fruits, chopped medium fine (apple, banana, grapes) Garbanzo beans, black beans,

or both, frozen or drained canned Vitamin supplement or Kaytee baby bird handfeeding formula Optional: chopped nuts, hard-boiled eggs, peppers, baby food

The amount of each ingredient is up to the cook, but I suggest making half pasta and

spaghetti and the rest equal portions of the remaining ingredients. Cook pasta and spaghetti and drain. Add carrots, broccoli, frozen vegetables, and beans while the pasta is cooling, then any optional ingredients (chopped nuts, hard-boiled eggs, etc.) Save for last the chopped fruits, baby bird handfeeding formula, and baby food. Mix well, using your

hands to break the pasta and sphagetti into smaller pieces. Or, alternately, process the mixture in a blender to make a mash. Roll into 1-inch balls, adding more handfeeding

formula if it gets too sticky to handle. Freezes well. Serve one or two balls daily, depending on your bird's size.

Birdie Bread

1 cup crushed bird pellets (put in a plastic bag and use rolling pin to crush ) 1 large carrot

1/2 cup fresh raw broccoli, ground in food processor 1/3 cup mixed nuts (no peanuts) and dry fruit, also food processed

Tu-Ki is a greencheek conure who has no lower mandible. This easy-to-chew recipe

helps satisfy her nutritional needs. Mix ingredients well and pour into a large, greased baking dish. Mixture will be lumpy and sticky. If too thick, add a little fruit juice or

applesauce. Spread about 3/4" thick and bake 30 minutes or until golden and knife comes out clean when inserted in center. Cut into squares while still hot. Freeze squares in

serving portions. Defrost a section overnight in the refrigerator and warm in microwave for 6 seconds. I also give her Tu-Ki soaked Zupreem pellets, chopped vegetables and

fruit. I give the bread to my friends' birds and they all love it, too.

Layered Salad

I believe this diet has several advantages, not the least of which is that I can feed fresh foods to over 40 birds on a daily basis, while only chopping fruits and vegetables once a

week. I'll try to explain this in a step by step manner for clarity.

Once a week, I layer in plastic storage containers ( I use seven 2-gallon containers since I'm feeding so many birds) the following:

Layer 1 (bottom layer) - chopped greens, which are varied each week. One week, I'll use collard greens and parsley and mustard greens, and the next I might use Swiss chard, kale

and dandelion greens.

Layer 2 - chopped (1/4 to 1/2 inch cubes) green vegetables, including any of the following: Brussels sprouts, zucchini and other summer squash, jicama, red or green

peppers, fresh hot peppers, chayote squash, green beans, fresh peas, cucumber, celery, anise root, etc.

Layer 3 - chopped broccoli and shredded carrots

Layer 4 - dry, uncooked pasta. This will absorb some of the moisture from the mix and

soften nicely.

Layer 5 - cooked beans. I usually buy one of the 13 or 17 bean soup mixes, which I soak overnight, rinse, and then bring to a boil and cook for about 25 minutes, then drain.

Layer 6 - a mixture of chopped apples, oranges and whole grapes

Layer 7 - frozen mixed vegetables.

The containers are then placed in the refrigerator (don't freeze).

Issues of freshness: This mix stays fresh in these tubs for up to seven days for three

reasons. First, layered salads stay fresher longer. Second, the orange juice filters down and slightly acidifies that mix. The frozen mixed vegetables placed on top super cool the mix immediately (cold air sinks/warm air rises). I do also wash all the fruits, vegetables and greens with Oxyfresh Cleansing Gele, which not only gets them clean but has some

anti-bacterial action.

Use: each morning, I empty out one container into a large mixing bowl. At that point, I usually add other foods that might not either hold up, or stay fresh in the layered mix, such as: soft fruits (blueberries, peaches, plums, kiwi fruits, melon, etc), sprouts, or cooked grains (amaranth, quinoa, brown rice, barley, etc). Sometimes, in order to generate a little excitement, I'll sneak in a package of pine nuts or walnut pieces.

Usually, I feed nuts separately, but I like to use this mix to surprise the parrots as well.

Once everything is completely mixed together, I put into another large bowl - eight scoops of this fruit and veggie mix, one scoop of a very clean, high quality seed mix and

one scoop of pellets (either Foundation Formula or Harrison's High Potency). This is then mixed together and fed to the birds.

This recipe can be adapted for any number of birds with a little creativity, by reducing

either the number or size of the containers used or both. For just one bird, you can create two small containers. One container will keep for about three days, even after being

opened and mixed up.

Advantages:

1. There's no need to chop fresh foods every day.

2. Parrots are very visual creatures. If you stick a bird feeder outside, it will take the wild birds at least two weeks to start to feed from it. When fruits and vegetables are fed

singly, or in large pieces, or in small combinations, and you add something new, it is likely to be rejected solely on the basis of the fact that it is visually unfamiliar. When

you feed a mix like this, you can put anything into it and it will be accepted because the appearance of the mix hasn't changed overall.

3. This mix is exciting for the birds, and allows them a foraging experience. They

never know what they're going to find in their food dishes and show considerable interest when I feed them. A huge amount of variety can be achieved. Greens and the types of vegetables used vary from week to week. The pasta shapes are varied (alphabet, whole

wheat, elbow, etc.). You can use other types of citrus instead of oranges, including grapefruit, lemons, tangerines, etc. Instead of grapes, you can substitute fresh blueberries

and pitted ripe cherries, or fresh cranberries. Instead of the 17-bean mix, you can use a soak and cook mix. Instead of grated carrots, you can use cooked and chopped sweet potato or winter squash. The possible variety is endless. I also vary the type of seed I

use. I buy the Volkman's brand, since it is so clean, but will use Hookbill Super one day, and Parrot Super the next, or sometimes canary seed, or a combination of seeds from the

health food store (sesame, pumpkin, etc).

4. Parrots that won't eat pellets, often will when they are combined into this mix as directed above because (1) they are part of an exciting mix, and (2) they will be slightly

softened by absorbing some of the moisture from the mix.

5. I leave this in the cages from 7:00 am until 4:00 pm, which you can't do with mixes that have been frozen or cooked. Since the majority of the foods are neither cooked nor frozen, they stay fresher longer. Bacterial growth is increased by temperature, moisture, and the break down of cell walls. This mix tends to be relatively dry, because the pasta and pellets absorb the vast majority of the moisture. Further the cell walls in the fruits

and vegetables are largely intact because they have not been broken down by either freezing or cooking. In hot weather, it tends to desiccate rather than spoil.

And lastly,

6. Seed junkies can easily by converted to a fresh food diet using this mix and a methodical approach, which is outlined on the Nutrition Page.

Birdie Bread

2 boxes Jiffy Corn Muffin Mix 4 eggs

1/4 cup milk 3 tbs. oil

1 cup raisins 1 cup diced apple

1 cup grated carrots 1 cup grated zucchini

Pre heat oven to 400 degrees. Mix first 4 ingredients together in large bowl. Add next 4

ingredients and mix well. Grease and flour 2 bread pans. Bake at 400 for 35 mins. Variations: You can substitute any fruit or veggie such as: blueberries, cranberries,

bananas, broccoli, squash, caulflower, green beans, raspberries, spinach, nuts, pineapple, etc. You can also use other muffin mixes such as the oatmeal, bran, etc. Be creative and

use your imagination. You can freeze any leftover bread or prepare it in advance and freeze for future use. Serve warm.

Apple Surprise Muffins

1 Box Jiffy Blueberry Muffin Mix (lower in fat and sugar than others) 3/4 c. Raisin Bran Cereal

1/2 c. Cheerios Cereal 1 c. dry oatmeal

1 c. baby apple juice 1 egg w/shell crushed

1 jar baby diced apples 1/4 c. light corn syrup

1/4 c. grated carrots or sweet potatoes

Bake at 350* in muffin pan with paper liners. Can use mini muffin pan and mini paper liners. Makes 12 regular sized muffins. Cut into 1/4 and freeze. Thaw as needed.

Birdie Bread II

2 6 oz jars baby food sweet potatoes 2 jars baby food tropical fruit

1-1 1/2 cups pellets or 4 tbss hand feeding formula 3 eggs and eggshells (crushed)

I recycle pellets left in our birds' bowls (We use uncolored pellets). Mix eggs and baby food. Use a little in a small blender/processor to crush the egg shells (calcium source).

Mix in remaining ingredients. Put in paper cupcakes or muffin tins- 4 tsps each. Microwave 1-2 mins until firm. Or bake in toaster oven at 400 degrees for 15 minutes till firm. Makes 12 servings. Serve warm, but not too hot. Cockatoos - 1 each, conures - 1/4

each. Save remainder in fridge and warm before serving. Very nutritious and they all love it.

Bird Bread

2 cups yellow corn meal 1 cup whole wheat flour l cup currants or raisins

1 cup nuts (pine, almond, walnut, pecan) 1 cup shelled sunflower seeds

1 twenty-nine ounce can of solid pack pumpkin 1 thirty-two ounce bottle of papaya nectar one half cup of sunflower or safflower oil

1 tsp ground cinnamon 1 Tbs baking powder

Combine ingredients in a large bowl. Add enough water or juice to make a pourable

batter. Use two large well-greased baking pans. Bake at 425 degrees for 30 minutes or until done. Cool and slice. Can be frozen. This recipe makes a "heavy" bread, not as light as you would prepare for yourself, but the birds love it! Notice that it contains very little

baking powder, (some baking powders contain aluminum) no added sugar or other sweenteners, and no added salt.

Birdie Bread for Overweight Birds

8 cups total of mixed grains and whole flours (wheat, buckwheat, oats, spelt, barley, quinoa etc.) which include 1/2 cup of either soy or chick peas flour for protein or 1/2 cup of corn

meal (to make it less fattening) 2 tbs baking powder

2 cups approx. of whole boiled mixed grains Approx 8 large carrots

1 large red pepper or 2 small ones 1 or 2 papayas, depending on the size - (I add the whole seeds)

1 or 2 slices of melon 2 eggs - I include the egg shells when I have the time to clean them well first

1 or 2 cups unsalted pumpkin seeds

The boiled whole grains are in addition to the 8 cups. I mix the grains, and boil them for 15 minutes in 2 parts water. After I turn the flame off, I let them sit in the covered pan for

another 15 minutes or more to absorb all the water.

The quantities can vary, this recipe gives an idea of the proportions to follow, but if the dough is too soft or too dry it can be adjusted with either more flour or fresh foods. What I tried to do was to make a bread that would have a high Vitamin A content, I don't know how much there is left after cooking it, someday I would like to have the nutrients tested

by a lab.

Grind the fresh foods in the food processor, mix them with the eggs and then mix everything together. Bake it in 2 rectangular pans at 350 for about 40-45 minutes.

Birdie Corn Bread Squares

1 Cup plain yellow corn meal 1 teaspoon backing powder

1 egg 1/2 cup apple sauce

1/2 cup apple juice (pasturized) 1/3 cup thawed frozen peas

1/3 cup grated carrot 1/3 cup cooked white or brown rice

1/3 cup pellets or seeds

Preheat oven to 350 degrees, mix above ingredients together. Put in a glass 8x8 pan. Bake for 35 minutes. Allow corn bread to cool and cut into 1 inch squares. These freeze well or

can be kept about a week sealed in a plastic zip lock bag in the crisper. My birds from Conure to Budgies love them.

Muffins

1/2 cup Whole wheat flour 1/2 cup cornmeal

1/2 cup Harrisons Mash or Lifetime diet fine 2 Tbs baking powder

1/4 cup raisins 1/4 cup hulled organic sesame seed

1 egg (you can sterilize the shells and crush them in too) 1/4 cup grated carrot

1/2 cup orange juice (fresh) may need to add a touch more for consistency

Combine dry ingredients. Mix well, add wet ingredients. Mix well and spoon into small birdy size muffin tins (use spray like Pam to avoid sticking). If you used the small tins

you should get approx 2 dozen little muffins just the perfect size for snacking on.

Plus you get the added benefit of sneaking some Harrisons into a picky bird's diet. You can use various different seeds/nuts and apple juice works just as well. I sometimes sneak

in an added 1 tbs liquid calicum. My Grey,Chico, loves these and smack's his "lips" whenever he sees them.

Fussy Bird's Favorite Muffins

1 box Jiffy bannana mix 4 eggs and shells (whites only)

8 scoops Kaytee exact bird pellets 1 to 1 and a half cups milk

1 package of chili mix (mild to medium)

Blendarize all these ingredients. Then throw in some left over veggies and stir well. Pam spray your muffin tin - cook 12 min. at 400 degrees. Makes about 12 big plump muffins. Individually saran wrap and freeze & Freezer bag um. Nuke um about 30 sec. When my

macaw gets fussy with other foods he'll always eat this one. Watch out for chili breath!!!!

High Protein or High Vitamin A Bread

6 Oz. breeder pellets 2 cups cooked beans (kidney, lentils, garbanzo, pinto, etc)

1/2 cup whole-wheat flour 1/2 cup reg. flour 3 eggs plus shells 1/2 cup cornmeal

1/2 cup raw carrots, chopped in blender 1/2 cup shelled sunflower seeds

1/2 cup veg. oil

Cover pellets with hot water to soften. Mash. Add all dry ingredients to pellets. Blend well. Puree beans, eggs, and carrots in food processor or blender. Stir into dry ingred. to

make a thick batter. Add water as needed. Bake at 350 degrees 45-50 minutes. I bake these in the miniature muffins pans so I don't have to cut and slice them. Freeze in

individual baggies.

Vegetable-rich Bread: Substitute equal amounts of maintainence pellets and cooked veggies. Carrots, brocculi, yams, squash instead of the beans. Prepare as above. I always

use Vitamin A rich veggies in this bread. I have weaned a lot of baby Greys on these breads. My breeders and pets loves it too! Hope your birds enjoy it!

Birdie Bread II

- 1 cup cornmeal - 1/2 cup each whole wheat flour and rye flour

- 1/4 cup each Cream of Rice cereal, Malt-O-Meal, grits, and rolled oats - 4 tsp baking powder - 1/2 cup peanut butter

- 1/4 cup raisins - 3 jars baby food - squash, sweet potatoes & applesauce

- 1/4 cup grated cheddar cheese - 1 large carrot chopped

- 1 cup chopped broccoli stems & crowns - 2 eggs with shells

- 1 cup puffed brown rice cereal - water as necessary

Put carrot & broccoli in food processor for 30 seconds. Eggs & shells should also be

processed in the food processor until shells are ground. Mix all ingredients and add water to make mixture spreading consistency. Spread in greased 10x13 pan, and bake at 400 for

30 minutes.

I created this recipe by combining ingredients from some of the other birdie bread recipes out there and adding some of my own. My birds love it! Ingredients can easily be

substituted with similar ingredients that you have on hand.

Mini Minute Birdie Cake

1/2 cup cheerios or kix 1/4 cup peanut butter

1 egg

Crush the cheerios/kix slightly in a plastic bag with a rolling pin. Pour the cheerios/kix into a small bowl. Add other ingredients and mix until smoothe. Now, pour the mixture into a cereal bowl or a small soup bowl. Put into microwave for 1-1 1/2 minutes. When you take it out, it should be a bit soft, but not gooey. Gently lift cake out of bowl and

place it onto a plate upside down. If the bottom is gooey, put it in the microwave for 10 seconds, otherwise flip right side up. Mush a ripe strawberry. Spread on top of cake. Cut

into pieces according to birds size. Left overs can be put in fridge. I made this for my sister's lovebird and she loves them!

Birdie Bread III

1 box of Jiffy Corn Muffin Mix Dump into blender:

1 egg with shell 1 carrot washed

1 hunk of sweet potato microwaved 30 sec to tenderize 2 bottles banana baby food

1 handful mustard leaves washed (from the veggie garden)

Substitutes: Vegetable list - 1 stalk of broccoli, handful of washed dandelion greens, handful green beans or peas. Liquids - A piece of banana and 1/3 cup of milk or a

nutritious fruit juice can replace the baby food.

Optional: Add spices - 1/2 tsp chili or 1/4 tsp cayenne or 1/4 tsp cinnamon.

Blenderize above and add to corn muffin mix. Mix. Bake as package directs (400 degrees) in greased (corn oil) muffin pan. Must be the slightly green color that is so

appealing.

Love Muffins

2 boxes Jiffy corn muffin mix 1 can cream style corn

2 eggs + shells, Blenderized 2 cups mixed steamed, or boiled carrots, broccoli, cauliflour, onion, any thing else you

want to add 2 cups grated cheese (cheddar)

1 cup raisons 1/2 cup any kind of nuts

Optional-- 1 Tbs rasberry jam or honey 2 hard boiled eggs, mashed

Mix everything together, spray muffin pan with Pam or wipe with oil. Drop 1 Tbs per

cup. My bird will kill for these. Also good for dogs or cats, they love them. Sometimes I split the recipe and add the rasberry jam to only half of the batter

Birdie Bread IV

- 4 cornbread mixes - 1 package frozen collard/kale/broccoli (or fresh)

- 4 eggs - About 1/2 cup to 1 cup low fat, plain organic yogurt

- About 1 - 1/2 cups cooked butternut or golden squash, sweet potato or pumpkin - Dried/fresh fruit (colorful to add interest)

- 1 cup pellets (or more if you want. I converted 2 birds to Harrison's using this recipe).

Blend Yogurt/eggs/greens, substitute for liquid called for. Mix all ingredients, bake about 45 mins at 400 degrees. I use 4 packages of cornbread mix (size of Jiffy or Washington (worthington?) but I try to get them at the healthfood store so they don't contain sugar,

and have less salt, but cornbread is real easy to make yourself from scratch, so sometimes I do that too - time permitting.

What I do is take fresh or frozen collard greens, kale, chard, bok choi tops, broccoli,

dandelion or whatever I can come by that is green and high in vitamin A. I put it through the blender with a little yogurt (plain, organic, lowfat) and substitute this for the liquid called for in the recipe. I also blend in the eggs, shell and all, called for by the recipe (I

wash the outside of the eggs in hot water first. I don't know if it does any good).

I then steam yellow winter squash, pumpkin, or sweet potato, until very soft, or if I can find frozen, I'll use that. In the absolute worst case I will use a can of pumpkin, but be

sure not to get pie mix. Just plain pumpkin. I stir in 1 package frozen, 1 can or the equivalent fresh cooked.

I then stir in a cup (more or less) of whatever pellets I have to spare, and some bright

colored fresh or dried fruit (cranberries, raspberries, blue berries); just enough to catch their attention. Sometimes, I will throw in a few nuts. This makes 2 large pyrex

rectangular sheet pans which is enough to give my birds (5 get their own piece/2 share 1 piece, so six a day) each day for almost 3 weeks. Pieces are about 1 inch square.

My birds really seem to like this bread. Occasionally, I will leave out the squash/sweet potato/pumpkin and add chopped red and green sweet peppers, a little garlic chopped,

and some hot peppers or dried pepper flakes. When I do this, I also add about a quarter to half a cup cheddar in small chunks.

Applesauce Cookie Bars

*Note: This is high in vitamin A, calcium and iron. 4 Boxes Jiffy Cornbread Mix

3 bottles baby food banana/yogurt juice 1 jar baby food mango dessert 1 jar baby food sweet potatoes

1 jar baby food squash 2 jar baby food macaroni & cheese

1 jar baby food oatmeal & apples cereal 1 jar baby food diced apples

1 jar baby food carrots 1 egg w/shell crushed

4 jars baby food applesauce

Mix well and pour into pan. Bake on 350* until done. Makes (3) 8" x 11" pans. Cut into long strips and top with applesauce. Thaw as needed. Birds cannot resist this!

Birdie Birthday Cake

1 box Carrot Cake mix 1 can Fruit Cocktail (reserve juice)

1 can Cut Sweet Potatos (reserve juice) 1/3 scraped cuttlebone

1/2 cup Flaked Coconut 1/2 cup Raisons

Use the juice from the Fruit Cocktail and Sweet Potatos for the liquid called for in the

cake mix. To the liquid I add 4 eggs (box mixes usually need 3, I add the extra one for the protien), mix in all liquids to this including vitamins if you use liquid. To the dry mix I add the scraped cuttlebone and dry vitamins. Mix well then add the sweet potatos and

mix with mixer again to chop the Sweet Potatos into smaller pieces. Stir in the Coconut, raisons, and Fruit Cocktail. I cook it in a pound cake pan or a 9 X 13 either one works, cook till done. While still warm I ice with thin layer of peanut butter and sprinkle with

coconut. Can be frozen in slices and served as needed.

Fruitcake

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Mash 1 large banana, the riper the better, with 1/2 cup nut butter (peanut, almond, cashew, etc). Set side.

Combine:

1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour 1/2 cup soy flour

1 cup quick cooking oatmeal 1/4 cup wheat germ (raw or toasted)

2 Tblsp. baking powder 2 cups finely chopped dried fruits - raisins, golden raisins, currants, prunes, apricots,

apples, pears, peaches, figs, cranberries, dates - whatever's on hand

Toss so pieces of fruit are coated in flour. Add 1 cup unsalted nuts (optional). Stir bananas and nut butter to mix, then add to fruit/flour. Add 2 1/2 cups unsweetened apple juice. Mix thoroughly and pour into greased and floured glass baking dishes. I use 2 9" Pyrex pie plates sprayed with Baker's Joy. Bake at 400 degrees for 20 minutes or until toothpick inserted in middle comes out clean. Cool and turn out onto plate and cut into

squares. Freeze.

Birdie Coffee Cake

2 cups bisquick 1 jar stage 3 blue berry buckle baby food

1 tbs cinnimon 1 tbs honey

chopped nuts optional 1/2 cup natural fruit juice 1 cup frozen triple berries

Mix ingredents with fruit juice. Bake in glass pie pan (spray with pam) at 425 degrees for 20 to 30 minutes (depends on dryness of birds tastbuds). Cut into pieces, freeze unused portions. Caution: parrots beaks change colors mysteriously after inhaling cake. Will

return to normal, no health hazzard!

Oatmeal Cookies

1 Cup Soft Butter 2 Eggs

1 tsp. Soda 4 tsp. Cinnamon

2 Large Baby food jars of applesauce 1 small box of raisins (optional)

Mix ingredients well. By hand add 3 cups rolled oats. It will be stiff. Drop by spoonfuls

onto greased pan. Bake until golden brown and enjoy!

Peanutbutter Cookies

2 eggs 1/3 cup peanut butter 1/3 cup wheat flour

1/3 gup fragola w/ raisins (or oats) 1/4 cup crushed pellets (I use orignal kaytee mix for cockateils, which is already

REALLY small)

Bake in pre heated oven at 350 degrees on non greased cookie sheet (make bite sizes) for 10-25 min. *Store in fridge due to eggs.

Popcorn Pizza

Use Popcorn cakes, a corn version of rice cakes, available in all heath food stores and

most supermarkets. Spread on a thin layer of peanut butter. Top with your bird's favorite food, such as: grated carrots, chopped broccoli, thin-sliced apples, applesauce, fresh peas,

grated mozzarella cheese, etc. No Cooking required!

Omelet

Ingredients: 1 egg

3 Tbs finely chopped carrot (I have to cut it small to hide it from her) 1 Tbs riccotta or cottage cheese

1/4 cup beans any kind ( not refried ) black are her favorite 1 splash of milk to mix it

3 Tbs chopped each ( green pepper, broccoli, sweet corn)

Use any vegetables you have at the time, to add a few new ones besides corn. My amazon loves yams, most finicky birds will eat a sweet yam. Mix all the above ingredients

together and microwave in a bowl for a couple minutes. Don't use the stove. If you keep fresh veggies around its really fast to make. Hope your baby enjoys it. If he doesn't you

might try mashed potatoes. My goffins love them.

Sweet Potato French Toast

2 eggs 1/2 jar sweet potato baby food

4 slices whole wheat bread

Mix the eggs and sweet potatoes together. Dip bread into the mixture and cook in a frying pan until both sides are golden brown. Cut the bread into small pieces and sprinkle sliced

almonds on top.

Green Eggs & Ham

Eggs, (scrambled or boiled), bacon bits, Spirulina, Parmesian cheese and grits. Scramble or chop eggs. Add bacon bits. Sprinkle Spirulina and cheese. Toss with dry grits - just enough to keep from being sticky. NOTE: If you can't find grits, use cornmeal. Make a

lot or just a little.

Birdie Salad

1 apple cut up into pieces of different sizes 1 jalepeno pepper (light green) cut into strips

1 carrot peeled and cut into different sized pieces Assorted sizes of broccoli and cauliflower

A few strawberries cut into half

Wash the foods and cut them up and put in a bowl. Then offer your bird all different shapes, sizes and colours. Of course this is only a small variety of foods you can use but, it is a bit of everything!! Bananas also work well sliced up into it! Nuts may work too!!

Bean, Rice and Veggie Mix

This mix is basically just a mixture of various grains, beans, and vegetables. It may seem complicated, but it really isn't. You can make up a big batch and freeze it into serving-

sized pieces. It is very nutritious. The squash seems to be the favorite part and also probably the most nutritious.

2/3 cup mixed dried beans (the kind sold for bean soup)

1/4 cup birdseed 1/4 cup cracked corn

1 very large acorn or butternut squash (about 3 cups cubed) 1 small apple

2/3 cup cooked pasta 2-3 large leaves collard greens

1/8 cup almonds 1/8 cup alfalfa pellets

1/3 cup grapes, peaches, or other fruit 1 or 2 tbss chili powder

1 tsp cinnamon 3 tbs parmesan cheese

1 packed cup cooked rice 1 package frozen green peas

fruit juice

Soak the beans, cracked corn, and seed in a bowl of water overnight. Then boil the beans, seed, and corn for 20 minutes or so, until cooked. If you're using the microwave, make

sure to use plenty of water. They absorb a lot while cooking.

Remove the core and seeds of the apple and cut into a few pieces. Cut the squash into cubes. Squash seeds do not need to be removed, they are very nutritious. Boil the apple and squash for 10 to 15 minutes or until very soft and mushy. The squash skins can be

pulled off and discarded.

Combine beans, corn, seeds, squash pulp and seeds, apple, pasta, collard greens, almonds, alfalfa pellets, fruit, chili powder, cinnamon, and cheese in a food processor. This may

overfill the food processor and might need to be done half at a time. Process until ingredients are well-mixed and chopped up a little.

Stir in cooked rice and thawed peas. Add fruit juice to achieve a nice consistancy. Freeze

into serving sized pieces. Makes about 60 ice-cube sized pieces (a good meal size for cockatiels, quakers, small conures, etc).

Birdbeans

Buy multi-bean soup mix or mix your own using 1 lb. bags of navies, pintos, baby limas, black turtle beans, kidney beans, garbanzos, black-eyed peas and any others you find.

Soak 2 cups mixed dried beans overnight in cold water, drain and add fresh water for

cooking. Add 1 tablespoon crushed red pepper flakes and 1 tablespoon dehydrated minced garlic or 2 to 3 tablespoons minced fresh garlic (or the pre-minced you buy in jars). Bring to a boil, then lower heat to a simmer for an hour or so. Rinse 1/4 c. dried green split peas and 1/4 cup dried lentils, add to pot and simmer for another half hour.

Optional addition: I purchase premium pigeon grains containing no cracked corn from the feed store and add 1/2 cup to the beans for soaking. A good pigeon grain will have milo

and various peas, plus a little whole popcorn, but no cracked corn. When done, cool, drain and package in plastic bags and freeze.

Bird Shells

cooked large pasta shells (use the leftovers from your human recipe) 2 eggs

1 scoop (I use the blue Kaytee scoops) seeds

After cooking the large pasta shells, scramble the 2 eggs, shells and all, and cook in a coffee mug in the microwave for 1 1/2 minutes. Dump the "egg loaf" into a bowl and mash with a fork. Stir in a scoop of your bird's favorite seeds or treat. Spoon 1 to 2

teaspooons of the mix into each shell. Serve to your parrot as a treat. You may refrigerate or freeze the extra. You may also substitute your bird's favorite foods for the filling.

Enjoy!

Birdie Goulash

I start with a bag of frozen vegetables. While they are thawing, I start cooking beans (different types on different days), biggest first, and adding the smaller ones that need to be cooked less. When they're done, I cook the pasta (and/or rice -- brown and/or white -- whatever I have) and add it to the mix of veggies and beans. I'm feeding about 30 birds

each day, so I make quite a bit. It's a *very* flexible recipe!

When I had less birds, I used an ice tray and put the individual servings in each "cube" so they could be thawed and used as needed.

Brown Rice and Veggies

Cook 1 cup brown rice according to package directions. Allow to cool and add 1 pound mixed veggies. Toss and freeze in plastic bags.

I double the recipe and use 1 pound regular mixed vegetables (peas, green beans, corn,

limas, carrots) and 1 pound of stir-fry vegetables (asparagus, brocolli, cauliflower, sugar snap peas, bell pepper - the greater the variety, the better). I have small birds as well as

large birds, so I use a heavy knife and chopping board and break the frozen veggie pieces into smaller ones before I mix them in.

Brown rice is eaten by the pickiest of birds, and if you have trouble getting veggies into your bird, you can process the frozen vegetables almost to a puree and mix with the rice. If they like the rice, they generally will not turn it down because of the vegetable flavor.

Roni and Veggies

Cook any macaroni shapes - 3 small (dixie bathroom size) cups. While cooking, add 2 "cups" frozen mixed vegatables. Cook until done, drain, add 1/4 tsp margarine and a few

shakes of parmesan cheese. Let cool.

They now have a tasty meal. All my tiels and umbrella cockatoo look forward to this. I change the macaroni shapes often. Refrigerate leftovers for next meal.

Rice Ball Surprise

Boil 2 cups of white rice until it is sticky. Wait about half an hour for it to cool enough to handle. Fill a metal bowl with cold water and set off to the side.

Chop about 20-30 bite sized pieces of your bird's favorite veggie treat. Once the rice is

cool enough to handle, take a small amount and flatten it in your palm, place veggie treat in center, cover with more sticky rice. Wet hands with cold water and roll into small,

talon-sized balls, just big enough for your bird to hold. Repeat until rice is gone. Makes between 20 and 30 balls, depending on size. These can be frozen and re-heated in the

microwave as desired.

Birdy Brunch

2-3 eggs. 1 cup frozen veggies

Whole bag of minute rice 1 1\2 cups of noodles.

Boil eggs boil for at least 30 min. Boil rice as instructed on the box. Let the noodles boil till soft. Then cut up the eggs, and put them in a bowl with the rice, and noodles. Then

add veggies and stir. Serve to birds and freeze remainder.

Frozen Pasta, Corn and Crushed Red Pepper

1 cup of pasta cooked and drained well 1 1/2 cup of frozen corn

1 Tbsp of oil 1/4 tsp crushed red pepper

Mix well and freeze. Then feed frozen. This will keep for a while because it's frozen.

Hawaiian Sweet Potato Polenta

Bake, boil or microwave an 8 oz. sweet potato; cool enough to handle, peel and mash, but don't puree.

Bring to a rapid boil 1 cup pineapple-orange juice and 2 cups water. While stirring,

gradually pour in 1 cup corn meal. Reduce heat to low and stir until it thickens. Remove from heat and stir in 1/4 cup tabouleh (cracked bulgar wheat - optional) and the sweet

potato. Mix thoroughly. Pour into glass baking dish (I use a 9" Pyrex pie plate) and refrigerate until set firm. Cut into squares and freeze.

Millet Sprouts

Take a millet spray and put it in a ziplock bag lined with paper towels (about 2). Spray water on the millet spray in the bag. Keep spraying until the millet is completely

drenched (you can also run it under your tap, but this way is better). Close it up and place it in a dark place with no sunlight. Check on it every day and give it a few sprays a day

(only a few) until you see it sprouting. Once it starts to sprout, take it out of the dark spot and take out the paper towels. Keep the millet in the bag and place it in the sun. Add only

a few squirts of water and let it be. When kept in the sun, chlorophyll will form and in turn will make it more healthy. Once the sprouts turn green, give it to the birds! They'll

love it! Have fun!

Multi-Salad

spinach pasta (spaghetti or macaroni type)

rice coriander

Any and every kind of fruit your bird likes dill

frozen corn (boil 2 minutes) Frozen Peas (boil 2 minutes)

mushrooms celery carrots

broccoli beans (soaked over night)

anything else that seems healthy for your birds!

Slice all the above to thin, small pieces (you can also use a food processor to cut these pieces). Then boil the rice, pasta, beans, peas and corn for a few minutes. Let these cool

and add to the salad. My birds eat all of it.

Pasta With Birdie Sauce

Ingredients: Cooked Pasta

Smashed Cooked Carrots or Squash (sauce) Bird's Food

Chopped Vegtables (not avacodo)

How To Make: Mix bird's food in with sauce and add chopped vegtables. Heat on low flame, stirring frequently until bird's food softens. Mix cooked pasta into the sauce and

stir until sauce and pasta are blended. Take off the oven and wait until cool to serve

Vegetable Salsa

1/4 cup each finely chopped Green, Red, and Yellow peppers 2 tbs finely chopped Jalapeno pepper

2 tbs finely chopped tomato 1 tbs finely grated carrot

2 tbs millet seed 3/4 tsp apple cider vinegar

Combine all ingredients in a small bowl. Stir until well mixed. Serve cold or warm.

Ingredients may be added or subtracted depending on individual preferences. Store in air-tight container in refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. Enjoy!

Peanut Butter Rice

1/2 cup of white or brown rice 1 cup of water

1/2 tsp of butter 1 tbsp of peanut butter (creamy or chunky)

1/2 tsp of honey (optional)

Cook rice in water with butter until done. Add peanut butter immediately after turning rice off, so that it melts and mix thoroughly. Dribble honey into mixture and mix

thoroughly. I sprinkle about 1/2 to 1 tsp of this rice over their food, whatever it is (I layer all kinds of goodies when I feed), and I give this to all my birds, from budgie to

cockatoos to lories. They all love it.

Sweet Potato Soup

This is good for your bird. Feed to breeders, older birds you're trying to "win over" (reminds them of being fed and nurtured as chicks), pet birds and yourself.

1/2 can vegetable broth (add water to cover potatoes - this isn't a brothy soup) approx. 1 cup sweet potato

1/4-1/2 firm tofu 1"x1" piece ginger minced

1/4 cup corn 1/4 cup whole wheat pasta

cinnamon, clove, allspice to taste (I normally use more ginger)

Cook till sweet potatoes are somewhat mushy. Your bird will LOVE THIS. My Zoe loves this and she's rather picky.

Ultimate Birdie Surprise!

1 (32 oz) bag 15 bean mix 1 cup Black Beans

1 cup Anasazi Beans 4 cups long grain brown rice (converted perferred)

1 cup couscous 2 cups Rottelle Vegetable pasta

2 cups Basil/ lemon pepper pasta spirals

2 cups jalepeno redpepper pasta (ziti type, or whatever is available) 2 large jars of gerber Vegetable Beef baby food

1 tbs Spirulina 3 tbs Palm oil

Soak beans overnight. At least twelve hours. Drain and rinse well. Put into a large stock pot and cook 45-60 min or until al a dente. Rinse lightly with cold water to stop cooking process. Set aside. Cook coucous in 1 1/2 cups of water for 5 minutes. Fluff with fork. Stir into the bean mixture. Cook Pasta until Al dente, drain into strainer, run under cold

water, shake off excess water , add to bean mixture. Cook rice until firm, add to mixture. Stir in both jars of baby food, the palm oil, spirulina. Let cool and put into 1/2 cup

serving size bags. Freeze immediately. Our birds go wild for this.

Warm Veggie Food

1/2 cup split peas 1/2 cup lentils

1/2 cup long grain brown rice 1 pkg. (16 oz) shoepeg corn

Boil these ingredients covered for 20 minutes, drain thoroughly. Add 1/2 to 3/4 cups couscous, stir in and let sit covered 20 minutes. This will cook the couscous. This is a crumbly mixture and good for the birds who love their warm meal. I double it when I

make it, then freeze it into portions of enough for about 3 or 4 days of feeding. I warm it in the microwave, one portion at a time. It really helps get a baby bird over the weaning

process, they still have one warm meal a day. ;-)

Birdie Frooty Fruit Salad

Guava, apple, pear or any fruits of your choice.

Chop up all fruits into palatable pieces excluding seeds of pear and apple. Toss pieces together and take out what you are going to use, then freeze.

I find that my budgies like the guava, apple, and pear recipe best. Budgies will chow down on a salad of about 1 litre of salad sprinkled with 1 eighth tsp of lemon or lime

juice.

Juice

Use aprox. 1" cube of your birdie favorite fruits and vegetables (at least 5) and water. Mix all the ingredients in the liquidizer. Shake them until they are a juice. Refrigerate. And if you want, drink it with your bird. Nutritious and delicious. My parrot likes it so

much.

Sunshine Surprise

1 box any type sugar-free jello assorted fruits (dried or fresh)

Seed (any type your bird prefers) Zupreem fruit pellets

Follow directions on box for jello. Put in refrig. for about one hour. Cube all fruits and add remaining ingredients to jello. Stir. Return to refrig. and allow to finish setting up.

Serve one spoonful a day to your tiel or budgie and be sure to take it away after about an hour. Jello is more prone to bacteria and should not be left in the cage all day. Enjoy!!!

Fruit Smoothies

Your birdies favorite fruit

Dice into small pieces and remove any toxic seeds (apple, pear, cherry pits etc). Put into blender or food processor and mix until almost liquid but some chunks still remain. Put mixture into ice cube trays (for smaller birds you can buy small ice cube trays) and put into freezer until frozen. Give to your birdies and let them enjoy!! Especially good for

those summer months!!

Fruity Ice

Select several types of fresh fruits, any combination, diced into pieces.

Puree fruits in blender or food processor until smooth and mixed. Pour into ice cube trays, and freeze until solid. Keep frozen, stored in freezer containers or plastic bags. To

serve, remove 1-2 cubes per bird, thaw slightly. Some of my birds actually seem to prefer the frozen fruit, especially in summer!

Fruits and Veggies Sauce

Things you'll need: -Baby food with bananas (Bananasauce)

-Baby food with apples (Applesauce) -Baby food with potatoes (Potatosauce) -Baby food with carrots (carrotsauce)

-Dried and wet fresh fruits and vegetables like bananas, coconut, carrots etc.,.(any fruits and veggies that are NOT toxic to birds).

-Nuts and seeds (Not toxic to birds)

You can use any of those baby foods listed. You can combine baby food or just use one. No cooking involved. Do not cook. Put the baby food into a bowl and mix it with the

fruits, veggies, seeds and nuts and it is ready to serve. Make sure you don't leave it out for more than an hour because it will spoil (This happens with fresh fruits and veggies and

baby food). All of my birds and rats love this and hopefully your bird will love it too. My conure even likes to take things from his food dish and dip it in the sauce!

Summer Treat

This is a very simple recipe that requires no cooking!

Fruit juice(Depends on which fruit your bird likes) Apples, Mango, Pear, etc.(your Birds' FAV Fruits)

Carrot (OPT)

Procedure: Freeze the fruit juice. In the mean time, cut the fruits into small pieces. Take out the fruit

juice when it is 70% frozen. Put the fruits into the juice. (There should be more fruits than juice). Serve. Fruit eating birds like lories will love it!! Note: Avoid putting too much mango as it may be 'heaty'.

Mineral Blocks for Finches.

2 cups calcuim carbonate(garden lime) 1 cup grit from bird shops

3 crushed egg shells microwave for 5 minutes 1 cup charcoal

1 cup clean clay 1/2cup wood glue(non toxic)

Add water. Mix not too wet, put into containers to set. DO not put in sun to dry. I have

been giving this mix to my birds for years.

Mineral Blocks - chalky kind

Ingredients: equal parts of, Plaster of paris (available at craft shops or Pharmacy)

Calcium Carbonate (my vet got this for me) Garden lime

Mix these together with enough water to make mixture similar to pouring custard (don't

have it too wet). Pour into containers/molds and add a piece of wire shaped like a U. Have about 2" protruding from the top, this is used to attach the block to something in the

aviary. For molds you can use plastic cups, muffin tins, empty fast food containers. Allow to dry before removing from the mold.

You can also add your own vitamin or minerals or maybe a little grit to this mix. note :

the calcium MUST be "calcium carbonate".

Baby Formula

5 cups water 1 cup quick-cooking oatmeal (not 'instant' oats) 1/2 cup raw wheat germ(from health-food store)

1 tbs corn oil 1/2 tsp salt

Mix and cook the above cereal for 5 minutes, remove from stove, and add one 4 1/2-

ounce jar of baby vegetables (strained garden vegetables), a combination of peas, carrots and spinach. (For cockatoos and cockatiels increase this amount by 1/3 to 1/2).

1 cup powdered milk

2 cups sunflower meal (from health-food store)

If sunflower meal is not available, purchase raw hulled sunflower kernels and grind them in a blender. Add 2 slices of very dry whole wheat bread mixed with 1 1/2 to 2 cups sunflower kernels, and grind them together in the blender to prevent the kernels from

becoming soggy and sticky. The bread will add nutrition to this formula.

Powdered Bird Vitamins/Per Directions

Store In Airtight Container. When ready to use: mix 1/2 Cup of the above with 1 Cup finely shredded hard boiled egg. I mix & offer this twice daily to my breeders & babies. My birds are also fed Kaytee Forti Diet and get their share of greens/shredded carrots.

BIRDY BREAKFAST CAKES 1

1 pkg Banana Nut Muffin Mix (Betty Crocker, Martha White, etc.) 1 egg

2 tablespoon wheat germ oil 1 cup unsweetened applesauce

Mix all of the above ingredients. Pour about 1/4 cup onto lightly oiled hot griddle. Cook

till golden brown. Makes approximately 8 bird cakes. We do not recommend serving with butter or syrup unless you are having some for yourself.

BIRDY BREAKFAST CAKES 2

1 egg 2 cups coarsely ground yellow corn meal

1 1/4 - 1 1/2 cups apple juice (unsweetened)

Beat egg. Stir in corn meal. Add apple juice (batter should be thick). Drop spoonfuls onto a well greased hot griddle and fry to a golden brown (we recommend using peanut or

cannola oil). Stir batter occasionally to keep well mixed. Makes approximately 12 cakes.

2 parts soaked rolled corn 1 part ground monkey chow

1 part frozen vegetables

no circumstances be left over night due to risk of bacterial contamination.

KITCHEN SINK SALAD

1 14 oz can red beans 2 TBSP Bird Mineral and Vitamin Supplement (I use Vionate)

Boil rice in 4 qt. saucepan for approximately 10 minutes. Add pasta and continue to boil

for another 10 minutes. Remove from stove. Add beans. Now comes the fun part. Go through the refrigerator and get out last nights left overs. Add cooked vegetables, crushed

hard boiled egg (that's right - shell and all crushed in your hands and tossed in), finely minced cooked poultry meat (only occasionally - but great for those left over scrapes at Thanksgiving), or anything else you find that you think they would like. Sprinkle with bird mineral and vitamin supplement. Mix and refrigerate until cool. Can be made the

night before and served the next day. This allows the vitamins and minerals to soak into the soft food.

1 part garden pasta twists dash of ground cuttle bone or ground mineral block

Place Dog food (or monkey chow) in the blender and grind. Mix with rest of ingredients.

Pre heat oven to 400 degrees. Mix first 4 ingredients together in large bowl, add crushed clean egg shells. Add next 4 ingredients and mix well. Grease and flour 2 bread pans. Bake at 400 for 35 mins. Use vegetables in season and experiment. This recipe is very

forgiving. Freezes well.

minutes Double recipe yields 7 loaves at 325 degrees for 33 min in Baker's Secret pans. Note: I don't bother to soak the dried apricots....a friend of mine does and says the bread is much moister which she likes. I like to juice a fresh orange or two & grated rind or use a fresh or frozen juice that has lots of pulp in it. Jardy the Jardine's says to put pecans in

everything. Lots of pecans.

4. Vent it, add more water to cover popcorn and microwave again 30 minutes. 5. Then seal again and let it stand 30 minutes more.

6. Then test it with your fingernail, you should be able to push your nail easily into the kernel.

If not, repeat another round of cooking.

When cooled, serve to parrots. Refrigerate or freeze unused portions

Potato Pancakes

(recipe can be doubled)

In a large bowl, break an egg and whip with a fork. Stir in 1 cup of biscuit mix and add a little water. Stir until smooth. Then add mashed potatoes (leftovers are fine) and a little corn. The corn can be canned, frozen or cut off the cob. Stir until smooth. Thin with

water until texture is like cream.

Heat a skillet, I use butter flavor Crisco shortening in the skillet to keep the pancakes from sticking. Just put in a dab of the shortening, let it get hot and then when the

shortening is hot, spoon one spoonful of batter in the middle of the shortening. Leave it alone to cook untilbubbles form around the sides of the pancake. Then flip it and brown

on the second side. Make the pancakes birdy foot size for a great parrot treat. Or serve them to your family warm with applesauce on the side.

I have listed many ingredients from which to make your own dry food mix, but if you are dealing with a bird with food sensitivities, remember that allergy-prone birds do not need ALL these ingredients since some of them, like dried fruit, are likely to cause trouble for sensitive birds. The beauty of mixing your own dry foods is that you can tailor it to the

needs and preferences of your birds.

When buying dried fruit, be sure to check for preservatives. Most are preserved with sulfites to retain their bright colors. Without preservatives, the fruit will look dark and

unappetizing to us, but the

nutrition and flavor are still good and your bird WILL eat them. Although most birds will not have a problem with limited preservatives, it is best to not repeatedly challenge

their immune systems with a multitude of substances foreign to their natural diet.

Nutriberry-Like Treat

1 cup of dried fruit 2 tablespoon of coconut

1/2 cup of uncooked oatmeal 1/2 cup of raisins

1/4 cup of seeds and /or crushed nuts 2 Tablespoons of peanut butter

1 Tablespoon of honey or molasses

I blend all the dry ingredients in a food processor until chopped finely. Place mixture into a bowl, add peanut butter and honey or molasses. Mix very well and the mixture is sticky.

Roll mixture into small 1/2 ball and place on a cookie sheet. Bake at 325 for about 20 minutes. Cool and serve. They are very good. If you use molasses they are very dark in

color. I spent $7.00 at the health food store on all the ingredients. I did the recipe times four and

ended up with over ninety large size balls.

Microwave Bird Biscuits

1/2 c. wheat germ 1/2 c. white flour

1/2 c. oatmeal 1 tsp. sugar

1 c. whole wheat flour * 3/4 c. dry milk 1/4 c. cornmeal 1/3 c. shortening

1 egg, beaten 1/2 c. hot water plus 1 tbsp. 1 tbsp. dry chicken bouillon

Combine flour, milk, oatmeal, cornmeal and sugar in bowl. Cut in shortening until crumbly. Add egg. Stir bouillon into hot water and slowly pour into flour mixture,

stirring to moisten. Form dough into ball and knead on floured board 5 minutes until smooth. Roll out to 1/2 inch thickness. Cut with cookie cutter. Arrange shapes on a 10

inch plate. Microwave at 50% (medium) for 5 to 10 minutes. The biscuit should feel firm and dry to the touch. Rotate plate every 2 minutes, turn shapes over

halfway through baking. Cool on wire rack. They crisp as they cool.

*substitute: soy flour, oat bran flour, brown rice flour, ProGrow.

Molded Bird Seed Cakes

Ingredients: 3 T. fat drippings

4 cups miniature marshmallows 6 cups bird seed

Melt the fat and marshmallows together. Then add the birdseed. Mix well and coat all seeds. Then press the above mixture into four one pound margarine tubs. The cover

makes the holder for the seed cake. Punch three equally spaced holes in the margarine cover edge with an ice pick, and thread string or cord through the holes. Bring all the

strings together at the top and tie them in a knot--in other words you are making a hanging tripod for the seed cake. They make nice gifts too; don't forget to give the recipe

along with the cake.

Sweet Potato Biscuits

2 cups All Purpose Flour 1/3 cup Cornmeal

2 1/2 tsp Baking powder 1/4 tsp. Salt

1/3 cup Chilled Butter or stick cut into pieces 1 cup mashed, cooked sweet potatoes or yams

1/2 cup Milk 2 tbs Honey

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Combine flour, cornmeal, baking powder and salt in a bowl.

Cut in butter till it resembles course meal. Add Sweet potao, milk, and honey - stir until just moist.

Turn onto a heavily floured surface and kneed slightly 5 times. Pat dough into 9" square and cut into 16 squares.

Place on baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes or until golden. Bake longer for harder bisquits.
