    Force

    A push or a pull that alters, or tend to alter, the state of motion of a body.

    A force can perform the following functions:

    1. Cause a body at rest to move.

    2. Cause a moving body to change direction, accelerate or decelerate.

    3. Change an objects shape.

    For example in cricket, if the ball is travelling towards the batsman and the

    batsman hits the ball, the force exerted by the batsman will push the ball

    away in the opposite direction.

    Motion

    Motion is movement and is divided into three main

    categories:

    Linear motion:

    When a body moves in a straight or curved line, with all its

    parts moving the same distance, in the same direction and at the samespeed.

    Motion

    Angular motion:

    When a body or part of a body moves in a circle or part of a

    circle about a particular point called the axis of rotation.

    General motion:

    A combination of linear and angular motion.

    Newtons law of motion

    Newtons first law of motion:

    This is often termed the Law of Inertia and states that:

    A body continues in a state of rest or uniform velocity unless acted

    upon by an external force.

    In cricket, a bowler will remain on his position until he contracts his muscles

    to start the run up.

    Newton law of motion

    Newtons second law of motion:

    This is often termed the Law of Acceleration and states

    that:

    The acceleration of a body is directly proportional to, and inthe same direction as, the net force acting on the body, andinversely proportional to its mass.

    For example in cricket, the cricket ball will travel with greater acceleration if

    the body of the ball is hit with greater force by the batsman.

    The ball will accelerate at a quicker rate when a greater force is applied by the

    bat when striking the ball.

    Newtons law of motion

    Newtons third law of motion:

    This states that:

    For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

    In other words, whenever an object exerts a force on another, there will be an equal

    and opposite reaction exerted by the second on the first.

    For example in cricket when a batsman hits a ball with their bat, the cricket ball exerts

    an equal but opposite force on the cricketers bat.
