What is biology?Biology is the study of life. What is an organism? Each individual living thing.

Example: Bacteria, Paramecium, Cat, Rose etc.

Characteristics of Living Things Characteristics of Living Things

•Cellular structure•Metabolism •Nutrition •Growth •Excretion•Including nucleic acids•Movement or locomotion•Sensitivity or responsiveness•Reproduction•Capacity to evolve

CELLULAR STRUCTURE

Organism

Unicellular (Single cell)

Multicellular (More than one cell)

Living things are made up of one or more cells. Cells are the smallest units of an organism.

METABOLISM

Cells acquire and use energy to break down, build and eliminate materials.

NUTRITION

•All living things directly or indirectly depend on other organisms for energy and food sources.

•All living things grow and develop by synthesizing new molecules by using food.

GROWTH

•The removal of waste materials from the cell and the body is called excretion.

EXCRETION

•All living things have complex structural organization based on instructions in DNA molecules.

INCLUDING NUCLEIC ACIDS

•All living things are able to move in order to provide themselves sources for their needs.

MOVEMENT OR LOCOMOTION

•All living things are able to respond to changes in the environment.

SENSITIVITY OR RESPONSIVENESS

•All living things reproduce and pass

their heritable traits to

their offsprings.

REPRODUCTION

•All living things are open to changes in their DNA. These changes are called mutations that lead to evolution.

CAPACITY TO EVOLVE

The condition of a constant internal environment in an organism is called homeostasis.

Ex: Regulation of blood sugar level

Regulation of body temperature

VirusVirus

Virus is a structure between living and non-living. Viruses can only live in a living organism. Chickenpox, AIDS, Hepatitis are caused by viruses.
