Whirl-Pak® Speci-Sponge® Surface Sampling BagsSpeci-Sponge bags are designed for sampling work areas, equipment and any other places where testingfor Listeria, Salmonella and other food borne pathogens is required. Swabbing animal carcasses is anotherapplication. They consist of a Whirl-Pak bag containing a sponge, which is free from bactericides and isnon-inhibitory. The sponge measures 38x76mm and is approximately 15mm thick when wet. After thesample has been collected the sponge is returned to the bag, ready for testing. Media may be added andthe sample incubated in the bag for a +/- test or directly pipetted and plated out. Speci-Sponge bags arealso available with gloves and a 10ml vial of general purpose buffer (pH6.8), which will optimise thegrowth stability of most organisms. This vial has a push release cap and can be opened within the bag.

DE neutralising broth is available separately. This general purpose dilutant is used to moisten the spongeand will neutralise various sanitisers that may be present. This must be stored at 2-8°C.

Whirl-Pak® Retain BagsWhirl-Pak retain bags are made from a barrier film that is a laminate of polyethylene and polyester, whichhas an extremely low permeability to oxygen and moisture. Therefore, both liquid and solid samplesstored in these bags retain their integrity. Unlike other Whirl-Pak bags these are radiation sterilised, as gassterilisation will not penetrate this film. By whirling or folding the tab over 3 times the bags becomeleak-proof containers and provide adequate sealing if the sample is going to be tested periodically.However, if the bag is to be kept closed for an extended period, a heat sealer can be used to give the baga permanent seal. Bags have write-on strips for easy sample identification.

121-181 Whirl-Pak® Thio-Bag® for Potable Water CollectionWhirl-Pak Thio-Bags provide an economical and convenient method of sampling potable water. Theyare EPA approved, robust, transparent polyethylene bags that have been sterilised with ethylene oxidegas. They contain a non-toxic, non-nutritive, 10mg active ingredient tablet of sodium thiosulphate toneutralise the chlorine at the point of collection. The bags have a white, write-on strip, which can bemarked using pen, pencil or marker. The fill line assists in collecting the correct quantity for standardtest procedures. Thio-Bags are also approved for the collection of microbiological samples for the US‘National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System’ (NPDES) compliance monitoring.

Thio-Bags are available in 100ml and 300ml sizes. The 300ml size is ideal when multiple tests need to berun and contains 3 times the amount of sodium thiosulphate as the 100ml bag. They are available asstandard bags or as self-stand versions with a gusset that opens to create a flat bottom. The self-standbags have the benefit of leaving hands free to work and requiring no rack to hold them.
