4 Hours - Lecture and Case Study Analysis

Each semester is made up of eight six-hour blocks taught every other Saturday.

The two parts of the program are taught as separate progressive semesters.

BioVentures IIBioVentures II focuses on the later stages of the life sciences product development lifecycle.The BioVentures II curriculum is dedicated to creating a compelling value proposition and strategic approaches to regulatory compliance, marketing, capital acquisition and integrated product launch models.

Course Objectives• Students will gain competency in the methodology of strategic

clinical problem solving through a lecture-based format with enhancement of the foundational knowledge through interactive case study discussions.

• Students will learn the core elements of life science industry product development including clinical trials requirements, regulatory strategy and compliance, integrated product launch and competitive advantage analysis, and business plan development.

• Students will gain an appreciation of the pitfalls encountered in real world application of the clinical innovation process through firsthand accounts of case studies presented by experienced professionals who have successfully navigated the process.

• Students will learn the intricacies and challenges of market analysis and business plan development involved in the clinical introduction of new medical technologies.

BioVentures IBioVentures I focuses on the early stages of the product development lifecycle in the life sciences business sector. The BioVentures I curriculum is dedicated to understanding clinical problems, solution creation and early stage product development designed around regulatory and stakeholder requirements. Each student will be given a unique clinical shadowing opportunity guided by a University of Utah clinician to conduct a clinical observation in the healthcare environment.

Course Objectives• Students will gain competency in the methodology of strategic

clinical problem solving through a lecture-based format with enhancement of the foundational knowledge through interactive case study discussions.

• Students will learn and retain the core elements of early product development through needs finding, ethnographic research, regulatory requirements, prototype design, concept generation and refinement, market opportunity and segmentation analysis.

• Students will learn to identify and assess ethical issues associated with innovating clinical technologies and the resources available to ensure ethical standards are appropriately applied to the innovation process.

• Students will gain an appreciation of the pitfalls encountered in real world application of the clinical innovation process through firsthand accounts of case studies presented by experienced professionals who have successfully navigated the process.

• Students will learn the intricacies and challenges of market analysis and business plan development involved in the clinical introduction of new medical technologies.
