Michael Rundell has been a lexicographer for over 25 years. As Managing Editor of Longman Dictionaries (1984-94), he edited the Longman Language Activator and two editions of the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English. He is currently Editor-in-Chief of the Macmillan family of learners’ dictionaries, which includes the Macmillan English Dictionary for Advanced Learners (MED: 2002). He has had a leading role in the design and development of several major corpora, including the British National Corpus (BNC) and the New Corpus for Ireland (NCI), and has published several papers in the fields of lexicography and corpus-based language study. He is a director of Lexicography MasterClass (www.lexmasterclass.com), an independent company that runs dictionary projects, develops corpus resources, and provides training courses in lexicography and lexical computing.

マイケル・ランデル氏は、レキシコグラフィーの専門家として２５年以上の経験をもつ。１９８４年～１９９

４年の間、ロングマンの辞書編集に携わり、ロングマン・ランゲージ・アクティベータとロングマン・コンテンポラ

リー・ディクショナリーの第１版、第２版の編集を担当した。現在は、マクミランにおいて数多くの学習者英

英辞書（マクミラン英英辞書２００２年を含む）の主任編集者として活躍している。現在に至るまで、イギ

リス英語コーパス（British National Corpus, BNC）や新アイルランド英語コーパス（New Corpus for

Ireland, NCI）などコーパス・デザインや開発において主要な役割を担いつつ、辞書編集学とコーパス基盤

の言語学習の分野で研究を発表してきた。

また、このようなアカデミックな仕事に加え、辞書編集プログラム、コーパス・リソース開発、レキシコグラフ

ィーとレキシコン・コンピューティングの研修を提供する実践的なレキシコグラフィー・マスタークラス

（Lexicography Master Class, www.lexmasterclass.com)を運営している。

Lecture at Surugadai Campus Academy Common 2F A4, on 14th November, 6:30pm Title: The future of dictionaries in the age of the internet’

New technology has transformed dictionary-making. It has provided lexicographers with very large language corpora and sophisticated software for analysing them, leading to major improvements in dictionaries. At the same time, new media have emerged (CD-ROMs, handheld devices, and online platforms) in which we can deliver descriptions of the language which are broader, deeper and more reliable than anything that has gone before. But new technology also empowers users of reference resources. There is now an impressive range of easy-to-use information sources (such as Google and Wikipedia) readily available at no cost. So the question arises: is there still a place for the monolingual learner’s dictionary (MLD)? This paper will argue that, for several important language-learning functions, the MLD still has the potential to be an indispensable resource.

タイトル：インターネット時代の辞書のこれからの役割

新しいテクノロジーの導入で辞書編集の姿が変わろうとしている。大量のコーパスとそれを分析するソフ

トウェアが容易に手に入るようになり、レキシコグラフィーの専門家による辞書の編集は大きな進化をみせ

た。同時に、新しいメディア（CD-Rom、携帯メディア、オンライン・プラットフォームなど）の登場により、従

来にはない、広汎で深淵かつ信頼性の高い定義や説明をすることが可能になってきた。新しいテクノロジ

ーの発達は、必要な情報がたやすく手に入ることを可能にしている。すなわち、グーグルやウィキペデアのよ

うな強力で使いやすい情報検索を通して、有益な情報を容易に得ることができようになったのである。こ

のような状況下で、私たちに新たな問いが突きつけられている。「このような時代に、英英辞書のような単

一言語による学習者辞書（Monolingual Lerner’s Dictionary, MLD）は本当に必要なのだろうか」という

問いである。本講演では、現在においてもＭＬＤが依然、必要不可欠な機能を有していることを論じる。

Workshop at Izumi Campus Media Tower 4F M410, on 16th November, 6pm. Title: The Sketch Engine: A tool for helping you to become your own teacher The Sketch Engine is browser-based software that allows users to explore and learn from a large corpus of language. Participants in the workshop will have a chance to use the Sketch Engine to explore the British National Corpus (BNC). While the Sketch Engine was initially developed to support dictionary-making and linguistic research, it has great potential as a resource for language learners. It can provide answers to many different kinds of question that are not easily found in dictionaries. It is also a useful tool for teachers who want their students to become independent and inquisitive learners, with the confidence to seek answers to their own questions. There will be Japanese translation. The Sketch Engine can be used in connection with WebBootCaT, for which there is a workshop on November 21st (Tuesday) at 1pm, Surugadai campus.

タイトル：スケッチエンジン―学習者が自身の教師となるための道具として―

スケッチエンジンとは、ブラウザを通して言語コーパスから探索したり学んだりできるソフトウェアである。ワ

ークショップでは、スケッチエンジンを使ってイギリス英語コーパスを学ぶ体験をする。スケッチエンジンは元来、

辞書作成や言語研究に利用されてきたものだが、言語学習においても大きな可能性をもっている。すな

わち、これまで辞書では答えが得られなかったさまざまな学習者の疑問に答えてくれるのである。スケッチエ

ンジンは、学習者が自信をもって自分の疑問の答えを探索する自律的な学習者になることを願う教師

にとっても有益なツールとなりえるのである。

Workshop at Surugadai Campus Building No.12 12F A2, on November 21st, 1pm

Title: WebBootCaT A powerful tool for using the internet to find the language that you need. WebBootCaT is a leading-edge browser-based program that enables users to build their own web-based corpus (in any language) of the language typically associated with a particular subject-field. In 20 minutes it is possible to gather together a large collection of texts relating to any given topic. These texts form a specialised corpus which can be queried to identify the key linguistic features of the topic and the vocabulary most frequently associated with the topic. Participants in the workshop will be given a chance to build their own special-subject corpus, on a topic of interest to them (for example, baseball, mandolin-playing, financial policy).. Using WebBootCaT, but it is easy for students preparing a report in English, for example, to find the language that they need. Teachers who want their students to know how to develop their vocabulary in a specialised area of study will also find WebBootCaT a useful tool. There will be Japanese translation. WebBootCaT can be used in connection with the Sketch Engine, for which there is a workshop on November 16th (Thursday) at 6pm, Izumi campus.

タイトル： WebBootCaT－インターネットを使った情報検索の強力ツール－

WebBootCaT は、利用者が自身の固有のテーマに求められる言語のウェブ･ベース・コーパスを構築でき

る革新的なブラウザー・プログラムである。20 分もあれば、特定のトピックに関する広汎なテキストを収集

することができる。学習者は、このようなテキストを形成することを通して、特定のトピックに関して頻繁に

使われる重要な言語的特徴や語彙を特定することができるようになる。ワークショップでは、実際に参加

者が自身の興味のあるトピック（例えば野球、マンドリン演奏、経済政策など）に関する専門コーパスを

作り上げる過程を経験することができる。

WebBootCaT,利用すれば、学習者が英語のレポートを書くときに必要なボキャブラリーや表現を簡単に

獲得することができる。WebBootCaT は、学習者の専門分野におけるボキャブラリーを向上させたい教

師にとっても、大変有益なツールとなりうるはずである。

WebBootCaT は、11 月 16 日に開催のワークショップ（明治大学和泉キャンパス 18：00～19：30）のテー

マであるスケッチエンジンと同時に利用するとより効果的である。
