FOREWORD2003

The information contained in this family history was compiled from many different sources. In May 1979, Chick Clarence Mellott, gathered and compiled the "Blue Booklet" entitled CHICK ABRAHAM MELLOTT, REBECCA MARY GORDON FAJv[JLYHISTORY, where he acknowledged that his most helpful information was provided through the research accomplished in the early 1900's by the Reverend Ahimaaz Mellott and Mrs. Rankin J. (Catharine) Mellott, Star Route South, McConnellsburg, Pennsylvania. Additionally, Dale B. Mellott, 211 W. Maple Ave. Shiremanstown, PA, has provided extensive research information, and he maintains a detailed quantity of sources for the work that he has done on the Mellott family. We hereby acknowledge the work of Chick Clarence Mellott and Dale B. Mellott. We greatly appreciate all the time and effort that they have given in securing and compiling our family history. The purpose of this 2003 edition of the Mellott history is to update new information on the family history, and, to connect key historical events that occurred in the early years of life here in America. It is also our purpose to consolidate the information that Chick and Dale have provided. Should one wish to know about the primary sources of the information, we suggest that you refer to the work done by Chick and Dale. We herewith submit a revised, updated, and expanded version of the Mellott family lineage to YEAR 2003.

THE MELLOTT

FAMILY mSTORY

France and the early years in AmericaJosiah Merlet (Mellott) was baptized in Roucy, Champagne, France in 1595, the son of Martin Merlet. Josiah married Jeane Robb circa 1620 and he died in 1655. Known children (1) : Gideon Merlet. Gideon Merlet born circa 1620-1625 in Rouey, Champage, France. Died 1683 in New Jersery. Married Margaret Martin. Gideon and Margaret were French Hugueonts [protestants that broke ties with Roman Catholics] and emigrated to New Amsterdam (New York) in 1662. Known children (1) : Jean Pierre Melot Jean Pierre Melot was the son of Gideon Marlet and Marie Marjin (Martin). Jean Pierre Melot (John Peterson) was born in April 18, 1658 in Mannheim, Germany. There is a birth certificate in Mannheim, Germany, showing that he married Marie Bellemain in 1690 in New York City. She was born in 1658 and died circa 1699. They had been married in Holland and then immigrated to Staten Island in New Amsterdam (now New York). Their arrival to America was in 1662. He was baptized on May 2, 1658 in Leiden Church, South Holland, Netherlands. Married, he migrated to central New Jersey in 1657 where he was a blacksmith in Piscataway, NJ. The name Piscataway was for the Piscataway Indian Tribe that was part of the Colony Nation in Maryland. Piscataway is an Algonquian word meaning "fork of a river". During the late Woodland period (A.D. 900 and thereafter), the Piscataway lived along the Potomac River near what is now Accokeek, MD. Archaeologists unearthed a part of this Palisade. A Jesuit Priest baptized a Piscataway Chief named Kittamaqund in 1640. A creek and a town in Prince George County were named in honor of this tribe. Jean Pierre died in 1704 in Middlesex County, NJ, and left a will naming his children: John Peterson "Peter," (born in 1696], Theodorous I, Anna "Hannah" Marlett, [she was born in 1691 and baptized June 7, 1691; and Madeline "Maria" Marlett, born on February 26, 1697. There is also a baptismal record that can be found in the French Protestant Church of New York, showing that Theodorous I was the son of Jean Pierre and Marie Bellemain Melot. This Theodorous Mellott I is the one who has been shown as the Father of John, a member of Tonoloway Church and the ancestor of the many Mellotts of the Fulton County.

Theodorous Mellott I 1694 - 2003Theodorus Mellott I or Mallot was born on January 27, 1694 in Piscataway, NJ, died March 19, 1756 (some references cite death as 1751) in Washington County, MD. He was baptized on March 28, 1694 in the French Church in New York City. There is nothing further to prove that this was the same Theodorus I who, living in Frederick County, Maryland, had a wife whose name was Catherine, married 1719. She was born in 1695 and died 1727, as believed by their descendents. He moved south to the Annapolis, Maryland area. There is a will, signed by Benjamin and Elizabeth Maple (or Marple), on May 13, 1727, which lists the following children: Benjamin Marple, Jr, Ruth Marple, David Marple and Catherine Marple. It is believed by Malot descendants that Theodores Mallot was first married to Catherine MaplelMallot and by her had three children: John B. (Esquire], Tbeodorus ll, and Mary [who married James Walling Il]. If this was so, the marriage of Theodores I to Catherine De La Chaumette could not have taken place before sometime in 1727. That Tbeodores Malott I may have been married twice is borne out by the curious listings of heirs by Theodores I and Catherine in their wills proven in Frederick County Maryland. After his first wife died, he married Catherine De La Chaumette (Delashmott) Maple in 1719, who was born 1695 died 1727, daughter of Benjamin Maple and Elizabeth Lee. Catberine De La Chaumette was a Huguenot,[a French citizen who left the Catholic church to become a Protestant] moved to Frederick County Maryland with Theodorus I where he has the oldest recorded will in that county (drawn in 1751). In the will he named the following family members: Son Peter Malot to whom he gave "two mairs of a yearling and a smooth bore gun" ... to wife Catherine he gave" all his stock of horses and mairs, cattle, sheep and hogs". His home was south and west of Hagerstown Maryland near present day Williamsport. His holdings were on Concocneague Creek close to where it flows into the Potomac. At the time of the Revolutionary War, this segment of Frederick County became Washington County Maryland. The Theordorus I family began to scatter with most of them continuing West, but one son, John, took his family North into Pennsylvania in what was Bedford County, but later became Fulton County. There is controversy concerning this family. According to some descendents of Tbeodores I and Catherine Malott, Peter and Sarah Malott, together with some of their younger children left Washington, MD, in the spring of 1780 and joined a party taking boats down the Ohio River from Pittsburgh to Kentucky. At the junction with Captiva Creek, they were set upon by a band of Indians, and the family was separated. Peter, with two or three of the children in the second boat, lost sight of the rest of the family, and eventually concluded that, if not hopelessly lost, they had been mercifully killed by the Indians, and so turned back to Maryland. Afterward, Peter, believing that Sarah had died, took a second wife and proceeded to raise another family. It is reported that Sarah, with the other children, were rescued by Simon Girty, considered a renegade because of his sympathy with the pJight ofthe Indians. Girty took them to Detroit, where they were turned over to the British. Later, Girty married Catherine, one ofthe 6

daughters. Between fits of wandering, According to one version of the story, Rachel offered to relinquish her place Sarah was well established in Detroit, settled there.

he lived out a stormy marriage with Catherine. Sarah made her existence known to Peter, and if Sarah chose to return to Maryland. By that time and chose to remain with the children who had

Other versions of the Malott saga insist that Peter never left Maryland, and that the father of this family was another son of Catherine and Theodore I, named Joseph, who was either killed by the Indians or wandered farther West, leaving no further record. It is possible that both men were on the boat, and this has been the reason for the confusion. There are problems with both versions of the stories and no one has satisfactorily provided a solution to the origin of the Malott family who were in Detroit at that time, undoubtedly the result of capture by the Indians and released by Girty. Members of this family, including Simon and Catherine Girty, who moved into the Canadian province lying across the river from Detroit; their descendents live today in Essex County, Ontario. Peter Malott, signing his will on January 17, 1804, in Washington County, Maryland, named the following heirs: Peter, Michael, Daniel,

Thomas, Dory (Theodore), John, Joseph, William, Hiram, Hannah South, and Sarah Stuart. John and Sarah Mellott had five sons named: Obediah Roy Mellott, John II, Jacob, Benjamin and Theordorus ll. The five boys were grandsons of Theordorus Mellott I who died in 1751(some cite death at 1756) in Frederick County Maryland. Theordorus I had been married to Catherine Maple Malot and was the son of John Peter Malot. John Peter was the son of Gideon Marlott who migrated to Staten Island in ] 663. Gideon was a French Hugenot refugee who fled France and lived for awhile in Mannheim Germany where John Peter was born. Later the family lived in Leyden,Holland. (One source cites this Mellott family as living in Washington County Maryland in 1750). John II married Elizabeth Sampson, Jacob married Ida Wink, Obediah I married Mary Wink, and then later married Mary Daniels, Theordorus II married Mary "Molly," Benjamin married Ruth.

Theordorus II moved to Tennessee and Kentucky and Benjamin moved to Ohio, while the other three brothers settled in Licking Creek and Belfast townships in Fulton County. Theordorus II was a resident of the Tonoloway settlement prior to moving to Kentucky in 1790. When the family migrated from France, the name was spelled Mellette. Others have spelled the name Malot. The names are all one and the same. Theordorus II, of Bethel Township, Fulton County, PA, sold property to Jacob Wink, Jr. for two hundred pounds, deeded April 6, 1781. The lands are bounded by lands of Jacob Poorman, Jacob Truex, John Mellott, Fred Souts, Richard Pittman, and Abraham Clevenger. Witnesses were Obediah Mellott and Jacob Wink, Sr. Later, Obediah Mellott sold land to Theodorus Mellott II in 1787.

Theordorus II, died in 1751 in Frederick County, MD. He had two sons and one daughter to his wife Molly. There were three children from Theordorus n and Molly. Theordus II later married Catherine DeLasbmutt and had three children Peter, Joseph, and Benjamin. Joseph was the father of Catherine, who was captured by the Indians and later married Simon Girty, a British Indian scout, during the Revolution. John M. Mellott, Esquire, born circa 1720- I 725 in NJ, died 1783 in Bethel Township, Fulton County, Pennsylvania, son of Theordorus l Married Sarah Stillwell circa 1751 in Atlantic City NJ. Sarah was born circa 1726, NJ, died April 4, 1812. Sarah was the daughter of Elias Stillwell and Mary Homes. John and Sarah were charter members of Sideling Hill Baptist Church, formerly members of Tonoloway Baptist Church. They were the first Mellotts to settle in what is now Fulton County Pennsylvania. John M. Mellott, Esquire 1725 -2003

Jobn M. Mellott, Esquire, was born in 1725 in Shrewsbury, Middlesex County, NJ. He was christened in April 1766 in Tonoloway Baptist Church, Fulton County. He died in 1786 (some cite death in 1783) in Bedford county (now Fulton County) and was buried in the Tonoloway Baptist Cemetery, Fulton County. John and his second wife Sarah Stillwell were married in Atlantic City, NJ circa 1751 and were charter members in the Tonoloway Baptist Church in the southern portion of Fulton County, PA near the Mason-Dixon line north of Handcock, MD. They entered Fulton County from the Maryland area in 1765 and settled in the Tonoloway settlement. Both John and Sarah were baptized at the April meeting in 1766 and joined the church at that time. John owned a 300 acre farm along the Tonoloway Creek in Bethel Township, Fulton County, PA. John was a Justice of Peace for Bedford County soon after it was organized in 1771. The exact date of John's death is not known, but Sarah appears as "widow Mellott" in the tax lists before 1790. Sarah was born circa 1726, died April 4, 1812 and is buried in the Sideling Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Fulton County, PA She was the daughter of Elias Stillwell and Mary Homes. John and Sarah had five children: Obediah I, John Peterson, Jacob, Theodorus II, and Benjamin. Obediah I married Mary Wink and later married Mary Daniels. Jacob married Ida Wink, Theordorus II married Mary "Molly;" Benjamin married Ruth; John married Elizabeth Sampson.

Obediah I Mellott 1596-2003

Mary Wink, Obediah's first wife, has a linage as follows. One Wink family in Holland, about five miles south of Leyden, there lies a small hamlet, Vink. Just across the English Channel is England. In the Parisk of the Dutch Church of Austin Friars in 1596, was a family named Van Der Vincke. One of the deacons of the Church was Jan Van Der Vincke. To occupy this position it required a man of mature age. Later in 1662, one of the Deacons was Issac who became an Elder in 1673. Issac Van Der Vincke was of sufficient wealth to hold a Coat of Arms. This early name may be translated into English as "one of the town or village of Vincke". A much later Deacon was John Wink in 1826.In 1727, Pennsylvanians became alarmed at the horde of Dutch and others coming into Pennsylvania. They passed a law that year requiring all immigrants to take an Oath of Allegiance to the Crown of England before leaving the ship. The arrival of the first ship is recorded in the Pennsylvania Archives, the seventeenth volume, second series: "A List of Palestine Passengers Imported into YE Ship William and Sarah, William Hill, Master, From Rotterdam to Philadelphia, Ye is" September, 1727". Listed on the first is Sebastian Vink. It has been an old tradition of our family that this "Van Der" in front of the name Vink was dropped after a disagreement between Sebastian and his Father about coming to America. Sebastian was disinherited, and therefore he changed his name to just Vink, or the present English spelling of Wink. As the immigrants of the

10

various nations other than England came to the English Colonies many officials made a "mess" of the old names by spelling them as they were pronounced. Since in the Netherlands the V's are pronounced as W's, the name was most probably spelled with a "wit almost from the early arrival. There was a two year old son with Sebastian, Jacob Wink. From this son many Winks have settled all through this country. Another story that has been handed down these two hundred years is that the Winks have Indian blood running in their veins. One story is that Jacob became lost and may have lived with the Delaware Indians. However, it is almost certain that Jacob married a Delaware Indian whether he ever lived with them or not. Her name was Elizabeth Truax ( some cite surname as Eamthal). [The surname Truax originated in the Danubian Valley with descendants later seeking refuge in Belgium and the Netherlands prior to emigrating to America.] A proof of this ancestry may be observed in the early Wink characteristics in common with Indians. Bright eyes, high foreheads, black hair, prominent cheek bones, and a special interest and knowledge of life in the forest were some of the characteristics in common with the Indians. In colonial Pennsylvania when a man became of age he received fifty acres from the government. On the 4th of April, 1747, Jacob received his land in Bucks County. He later moved to New Jersey. The exact date is not known, but it probably was soon after his marriage or the death of Sebastian. This date is probably between 1747 and 1773 because a record oftheir sons birth shows that they were born in New Jersey. They again moved between 1773 and 1778 to Bedford County. From the Pennsylvania Archives we find that in 1778 Jacob was a ranger of the Frontier of Bedford County and a private in the Bedford Militia during the America Revolution. He served a tour of active duty in the Bedford County Militia as a member of Lieutenant Thomas Norton's Company during the period of July 29 through October 21, 1782. In 1783 the government granted him 200 acres and in 1788 received 460 acres. Both were in Bedford County. This area is now located in Licking Creek Township, Fulton County, PA. Jacob Wink was appointed Justice of the Peace of Bedford County on February 7, 1789. At this time Bedford County was the size of the present counties of Somerset, Bedford and Fulton Counties, including parts of Blair and Cambria Counties. Jacob's position was of high importance in those days when our new government was in its growing period. He served for seven years, then in August of 1791 he was appointed for life. Jacob and his wife Elizabeth brought nine children into the world: Jacob J, Jr. "Red House Jake", born in 1762, John Wink, Ida or Idea Mellott, born in 1762, died 1845, was married to Jacob Mellott, born 1761, died 1844. Adam Wink born in October of 1764, Rebecca Combs, Elizabeth Hart, born March 14, 1770, Elias Wink born in 1773, Mary Mellott, born October 9, 1758, Uriah Wink born February 20, 1768. All of these children were born in New Jersey. All of these children raised their families in this area, except for John Wink who went to Ohio.

,-----.,

At age 83 on January 12, 1806, Jacob Wink, died at his farm on Licking Creek near Needmore, Fulton County, PA. He was buried near the house which he had helped to build. Elizabeth followed him in death on June 5, 1810 at age 77. They were both members of the Primitive Baptist Church of Sideling Hill.

John Peterson Mellott was born April 23, 1753 in Little Egg Harbor, NJ. He died on July 12, 1835 and buried in Sideling HilI Baptist Cemetery, Sipes Mills, PA. He was a Revolutionary War veteran. He is listed in the DAR Patriots Index. He was a member of Captain Henry Rush's Company, Bedford County Militia. He is listed in the Bethel Township taxable list for 1774. He was a Justice of the Peace in Bedford County (later Fulton County) in 1777. Benjamin Mellott was born on March 19, 1759 in Little Egg Harbor, NJ. He was buried in Sunfish Cemetery, Congress township, Mt. Gilead, OH. In 1785, Benjamin had a tract of land called "Spring Hill" that was at the foot of Sideling Hill Mountain. Adjoining the mountain on one side, Richard Pittman on the southeast side, and Jacob Wink on the East. Old Mountain road ran through the property. Benjamin married his wife, Ruth, sold this tract of land to John Mellott for 100 pounds on November 11, 1790. Benjamin's wife Ruth died in 1793 or 1794, Benjamin married Elizabeth Truax who, from deeds, lived only a year after marriage bearing a son Benjamin, Jr. born July 14, 1811 Benjamin Sr. went West between 1800 and 1810 to Richland County, OH. In December 1833 in Richland County, OH, Benjamin received a $ 20 per year Revolutionary War Pension, at age 75. Benjamin had served as a Private in a company commanded by Colonel Lewis Piper of the PA Line for six months. The date of service was May 1, 1776 for three months. At the date of drafting, he lived in Bethel Township, Bedford County (Fulton County), PA. He spent most of his time in the Ligonier Valley as a Company scout. In July 1782, he again enlisted in the Company of Captain Henry Rush in Regiment of Colonel James Martin as a scout or spy. He is buried in Sunfish 103 Cemetery, Morrow County, near Mt. Gilead, OH. Jacob J. Mellott, Sr., was born in 1762 in Little Egg Harbor, NJ. He died onAugust 19, 1844 in Licking Creek Township, Bedford County (Fulton County), PA. He was buried in Sideling Hill Baptist Cemetery, Sipes Mills, PA. He was a Revolutionary War veteran and a member of Captain Henry Rush's Company, Bedford County Militia.

John B. and Sarah had the following children: Theodore "Dory" Theodore "Dory" was bom on February 7, 1752 in Little Egg Harbor, NJ. Hedied on July 27, 1840 in Bealsville, OR. He was buried in East Sunbury Baptist Cemetery, Bealsville, OR. His tombstone reads T. Mellott. He was a Revolutionary War veteran in the Regiment commanded by Colonel Richard Davis in the Maryland area for two years. His pension was $ 80 per year commencing on March 4, 1831. His name was on the list for taxable inhabitants of Belfast Township in 1785. Supposedly he entered

12

Ohio by crossing the Ohio river near Bellaire in 1804. He brought with him his four sons and settled 2 miles below Beallsville on Little Piney Creek where he died. Theodous n and Benjamin moved to Ohio. The congregation of Tonoloway began keeping a church book in 1765. It is not known if this book still exists, but in 1901 some portions of it were copied by elder Thomas Alderton. Sara Mellott, widow of John Mellott, Esquire, petitioned with several other members of Tonoloway Church for a letter of dismissal. These Baptists in 1790 constituted a new church, Sideling Hill, which would be nearer to their homes. In other records from the church book: February 1767, Elias Stillwell, John MeJlott and Edward Coombs were chosen and authorized to buy a parsonage out ofthe church funds.

John Mellott, Jr., born April 4, 1753, died July 12, 1835, served as a Revolutionary War soldier, married Elizabeth Sampson, born January 4, 1759, died December 23, 1834, daughter of John Sampson.

Obediah Mellott I 1755-2003 I.. Obediah Mellott I was born in 1755 in Little Egg Harbor, NJ. and died on March 28, 1828. Burial: Sideling Hill Baptist Cemetery, Sipes Mills, Fulton County, PA. One source listed a birthplace in Frederick county Maryland, in an area that later became Washington County Maryland. He served during the Revolutionary War as a private and ranger of captain James Warford's Company (Bedford County Militia). In 1798 Obediah I, occupied 100 acres of land, and his 22'x 20' dwelling was valued at $ 60. Obediah I fathered eighteen children. He had nine children to his first wife, Mary Wink, who died in 1799 (just thirteen days after giving birth to Elias), daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth Wink. The nine children born to Obediah, I and Mary Wink are Jacob, John, Betsy, Margaret, Ida, Lydia, Obediah, II, Sara, and Elias. After Mary Wink's death, he had nine children to his second wife, Mary Daniels, who was born in 1760 and died May 23, 1864, daughter of Edward and Thankful Daniels.
