Day 1Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared to St. Juan Diego in 1531, at Tepeyac Hill which is now part of Mexico City. She instructed him to tell the Bishop to build a church in her honor at the bottom of the hill. The Bishop was skeptical until St. Juan Diego opened his cloak, spilling fresh roses on the ground and revealing a picture of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

We turn to you, Our Lady of Guadalupe, and ask that you bring hope to our troubled world. As you did in 1531, make God’s love and compassion known to us today. Open the hearts of the downtrodden, fill them with the warmth of God’s love and give them hope in tomorrow. Amen.

Day 2Our Lady of Guadalupe’s appearance brought God’s love to all the people of the New World, not just to those living in Mexico. The Church recognizes her as the Patroness of the Americas. Our Lady of Guadalupe reminds us that we share a common heritage as “New World” people and, through God, are truly brothers and sisters.

Our Lady of Guadalupe, we seek your guidance in helping us reach out with God’s love to our neighbors throughout North and South America. May we who have been blessed with so much be inspired to share with those who have nothing. We answer God’s call to love and care for one another with fervor and persistence. Amen.

Day 3Mary’s appearance at Guadalupe came when Native people were enslaved and suffered great hardship, cruelty and humiliation. Millions were dying from hard work and from plagues and diseases that came with the Spaniards. Her role was to bring people from two different faiths and cultures together to form a new branch of the Church that would be unique to the New World.

Our Lady of Guadalupe, we thank you for coming to the New World and lighting the way to a new Church that embraces diversity. We continue to need your help and guidance today in bringing the diverse cultures of our world together. Help us to respect our differences and recognize all that we share in common. Amen.

Día 1Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe se apareció a San Juan Diego en 1531, en el Cerro del Tepeyac, que ahora es parte de la Ciudad de México. Ella le ordenó que le dijera al obispo que construyera una iglesia en su honor al pie de la colina. El obispo se mostró escéptico hasta que San Juan Diego abrió su manto, derramando rosas frescas en el suelo y revelando una imagen de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe.

Nos dirigimos a ti, Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, y te pedimos que traigas esperanza a nuestro atribulado mundo. Como hiciste en 1531, danos a conocer hoy el amor y la compasión de Dios. Abre los corazones de los oprimidos, llénalos con el calor del amor de Dios y dales esperanza en el mañana. Amén.

Día 2La aparición de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe trajo el amor de Dios a toda la gente del Nuevo Mundo, no solo a los que viven en México. La Iglesia la reconoce como Patrona de las Américas. Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe nos recuerda que compartimos una herencia común como personas del “Nuevo Mundo” y, a través de Dios, somos verdaderamente hermanos y hermanas.

Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, buscamos su guía para ayudarnos a llegar con el amor de Dios a nuestros vecinos en América del Norte y del Sur. Que nosotros, que hemos sido bendecidos con tanto, seamos inspirados para compartir con aquellos que no tienen nada. Respondemos al llamado de Dios de amarnos y cuidarnos unos a otros con fervor y perseverancia. Amén.

Día 3La aparición de María de Guadalupe se produjo cuando los indígenas fueron esclavizados y sufrieron grandes penurias, crueldad y humillación. Millones morían de trabajo duro y de las plagas y enfermedades que acompañaban a los españoles. Su función era unir a personas de dos religiones y culturas diferentes para formar una nueva rama de la Iglesia que sería única en el Nuevo Mundo.

Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, te agradecemos por venir al Nuevo Mundo e iluminar el camino hacia una nueva Iglesia que abraza la diversidad. Seguimos necesitando su ayuda y orientación hoy para unir las diversas culturas de nuestro mundo. Ayúdanos a respetar nuestras diferencias y reconocer todo lo que compartimos. Amén.

Day 4St. Juan Diego was an ordinary man who was chosen by God to do an extraordinary task. He described himself in this way: I am a small man, a rope, a tiny wooden ladder, a tail end, a leaf. “I am a nobody”. Still God called him to open the door of the New World to Christianity like St. Juan Diego, each of us is an ordinary person called by God to bring His love and compassion to the world.

God, you are everything to me, I offer my whole self to you and stand ready to do Your will. Open my ears to hear Your call. Open my heart to respond as St. Juan Diego did. If I grow weary, come to my rescue and give me the strength I need to continue. Amen.

Day 5Most of the Native Americans did not embrace the new religion presented by the early missionaries. St. Juan Diego was among the few who did embrace Christianity. It took courage to go against the majority of his people but he followed the yearning in his heart for God. There are times when we, too, must go against the crowd and take an unpopular stand.

God, you know how difficult it can be for me to stand up for what I know is right. It is so easy and comfortable to go along with the crowd. Give me the courage, God, to be true to my convictions. Do not let me be stopped by me fears of what others might think. Amen.

Day 6St. Juan Diego was in 50s when Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared to him. In his day, most people died a much younger age. He was respected not only for his age but also for his wisdom. With its emphasis on youth, our society today tends to ignore the elderly and we fail to take advantage of the wisdom they have to offer.

We pray today, God, for our elderly. They have given you a lifetime of service and they continue to bring your love and compassion to others. You have filled them with wisdom, obtained through experience. Enable us to listen and learn from them. Amen.

Día 4San Juan Diego fue un hombre común que fue elegido por Dios para realizar una tarea extraordinaria. Se describió a sí mismo de esta manera: soy un hombre pequeño, una cuerda, una pequeña escalera de madera, una cola, una hoja. “Yo soy un don nadie”. Aún así, Dios lo llamó a abrir la puerta del Nuevo Mundo al cristianismo como San Juan Diego, cada uno de nosotros es una persona común llamada por Dios para llevar Su amor y compasión al mundo.

Dios, eres todo para mí, me entrego todo mi ser a ti y estoy listo para hacer tu voluntad. Abre mis oídos para escuchar tu llamado. Abre mi corazón para responder como lo hizo San Juan Diego. Si me canso, ven a rescatarme y dame la fuerza que necesito para continuar. Amén.

Día 5La mayoría de los nativos americanos no abrazaron la nueva religión presentada por los primeros misioneros. San Juan Diego fue uno de los pocos que abrazó el cristianismo. Se necesitó valor para ir en contra de la mayoría de su pueblo, pero siguió el anhelo de Dios en su corazón. Hay momentos en que nosotros también debemos ir en contra de la multitud y adoptar una posición impopular.

Dios, sabes lo difícil que puede ser para mí defender lo que sé que es correcto. Es tan fácil y cómodo estar de acuerdo con la multitud. Dios mío, dame el valor de ser fiel a mis convicciones. No dejes que me detenga el miedo a lo que puedan pensar los demás. Amén.

Día 6San Juan Diego tenía 50 años cuando se le apareció Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. En su época, la mayoría de la gente moría a una edad mucho más joven. Fue respetado no solo por su edad sino también por su sabiduría. Con su énfasis en la juventud, nuestra sociedad de hoy tiende a ignorar a los ancianos y no aprovechamos la sabiduría que tienen para ofrecer.

Oramos hoy, Dios, por nuestros ancianos. Le han brindado un servicio de por vida y continúan brindando su amor y compasión a los demás. Los has llenado de sabiduría, obtenida a través de la experiencia. Permítanos escucharlos y aprender de ellos. Amén.

Day 7St. Juan Diego missed a scheduled meeting with Our Lady of Guadalupe because he was caring for a dying uncle. Our Lady understood and, through her, God healed St. Juan Diego’s uncle. There are times when our concerns for others in our life keep us from spending as much time as we would like in prayer. Yet God understands and waits for us.

I sincerely want to spend time alone with you, God. But there are times when family responsibilities consume my time and energy. At these times, Lord, forgive me my preoccupation and seek me out, wherever I am. Find me and give me the gift of time with you. Amen.

Day 8Our Lady of Guadalupe delivered a message that all people have dignity in the eyes of God and are to be respected as God’s children. No nation, ethnic group or class of people is better than another. Are we much different from those of St. Juan Diego’s day?

God, we have heard your message of equality delivered to us by Our Lady of Guadalupe. We ask you to amplify this message now so that it may be heard loudly and clearly over the din of fighting, disrespect and indignity that exist in our world today. Come to us, God. Show us the way. Amen.

Day 9Those who study ancient cultures say that in the Aztec culture of St. Juan Diego’s time, the tilma (cloak) was the exterior expression of the person’s innermost identity. By making herself visible on his tilma, Our Lady of Guadalupe imprinted herself and her message of God’s love in the deepest recesses of St. Juan Diego’s heart.

God, I believe that you live within me. You know me better that I know myself. You know my strengths and weaknesses, my hopes and fears, my desires to serve you and my failures to do so. I give myself to you completely. Shape me into person you want me to be. Amen.

Día 7San Juan Diego se perdió una reunión programada con Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe porque estaba cuidando a un tío moribundo. Nuestra Señora entendió y, a través de ella, Dios curó al tío de San Juan Diego. Hay momentos en que nuestras preocupaciones por los demás en nuestra vida nos impiden pasar todo el tiempo que quisiéramos en oración. Sin embargo, Dios nos comprende y nos espera.

Sinceramente, quiero pasar tiempo a solas contigo, Dios. Pero hay momentos en que las responsabilidades familiares consumen mi tiempo y energía. En estos momentos, Señor, perdona mi preocupación y búscame donde quiera que esté. Encuéntrame y dame el regalo del tiempo contigo. Amén

Día 8Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe transmitió un mensaje de que todas las personas tienen dignidad a los ojos de Dios y deben ser respetadas como hijos de Dios. Ninguna nación, grupo étnico o clase de personas es mejor que otra. ¿Somos muy diferentes a los de la época de San Juan Diego?

Dios, hemos escuchado tu mensaje de igualdad entregado por Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. Les pedimos que amplifiquen este mensaje ahora para que pueda ser escuchado alto y claramente sobre el estruendo de la lucha, la falta de respeto y la indignidad que existen en nuestro mundo de hoy. Ven a nosotros, Dios. Muéstranos el camino. Amén

Día 9Quienes estudian las culturas antiguas dicen que, en la cultura azteca de la época de San Juan Diego, la tilma (manto) era la expresión exterior de la identidad más íntima de la persona. Al hacerse visible en su tilma, Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe se imprimió a sí misma y a su mensaje del amor de Dios en lo más profundo del corazón de San Juan Diego.

Dios, creo que vives dentro de mí. Tú me conoces mejor que yo mismo. Conoces mis fortalezas y debilidades, mis esperanzas y temores, mis deseos de servirte y mis fracasos para hacerlo. Me entrego a ti por completo. Hazme la persona que quieres que sea. Amén

Grateful no matter what

Prayer to Our Lady of GuadalupePatroness of the Americas, Mother of Life

Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mystical Rose, make intercession for our Holy Church, protect the sovereign Pontiff, help all those who invoke you in their necessities, and since you are the ever Virgin Mary and Mother of the true God, obtain for us from your most Holy Son the grace of keeping our faith, of sweet hope in the midst of the bitterness of life, of burning charity, and the precious gift of final perseverance. Amen.

Santa María de Guadalupe, Mística Rosa, intercede por la Iglesia, protege al Soberano Pontífice, oye a todos los que te invocan en sus necesidades. Así como pudiste aparecer en el Tepeyac y decirnos: "Soy la siempre Virgen María, Madre del verdadero Dios", alcánzanos de tu Divino Hijo la conservación de la Fe. Tu eres nuestra dulce esperanza en las amarguras de esta vida. Danos un amor ardiente y la gracia de la perseverancia final. Amén.
