weLCOMe TO The annual BIGSOUND music industry summit, brought you by Q Music, Queensland’s peak body for the contemporary music industry, along with support from our funding partners and sponsors. This year marks the tenth anniversary of BIGSOUND and I am proud to acknowledge the significant achievements of the BIGSOUND team in establishing and developing a world class music industry conference and showcase event in the Australasian region.

we believe the BIGSOUND experience is unique in combining the essential ingredients of relevance, top level speakers, excellent networking opportunities, and most importantly of all, a wonderful mixture of serious business opportunity and pure

enjoyment value. Brisbane is an exceptional site for an event of this kind with an unparalleled range of music venues nested around the conference hub. Brisbane has a global reputation as a music city. It has a long history of producing well known artists and is home to a thriving music scene and venue network.

Alongside our conference program we have a packed showcase program, featuring top emerging talent from Australia and further afield. In recent years we have grown the showcase line up under the BIGSOUND Live banner, opening it up beyond the delegate base to the general public. BIGSOUND Live has proven to be extremely popular with audiences with swift ticket sales and we are working to grow BIGOUND Live as a major public event.

WELCOME

In 2011 we are delighted to welcome back Graham ‘Asho’ Ashton for a second year as BIGSOUND executive programmer. Via his distinctive curatorial hand, he has delivered another exceptional program filled with engaging panels and keynotes, which will serve as a rich platform for debate.

For returning delegates, we thank you for your continuing support of this special event, and for new delegates, we welcome you to what will no doubt be a memorable event for you. have a great time!

WELCOME

GReeTINGS AND SALUTATIONS.

Thanks for having me back for a second year as programmer. I am very fortunate that it happens to coincide with the 10th Anniversary of BIGSOUND.

we were overwhelmed with the quality of artists and industry folk that surrounded the event in 2010 and achieved some significant milestones. we hope and expect to take it up a notch again for 2011.

If the response from the artist community is anything to go by, we are certainly heading in the right direction. we had 500 artists apply to showcase, up from 300 in 2010. The only downside is that we could only invite 80 and therefore had to send rejection letters to 420 artists, with many of them more than deserving a spot.

when you opened the 2010 BIGSOUND program, artists like BOY & BeAR, The JeZABeLS, The NAKeD & FAMOUS & wAShINGTON were relative unknowns and have had tremendous years, both locally and internationally. I know I have my picks as to which artists will take significant leaps this year and look forward to discussing their merits with most of you.

The diverse cross section of irreverent characters appearing as part of this year’s conference surely appeals to anyone with more than a passing interest in the music industry. we feel confident that you will be challenged, inspired and entertained during the next few days. we have invited speakers

that will be generous with their time and share their knowledge and experience wherever possible.

Take a deep breath, open your ears, eyes and minds and know in your heart that the human body can surely survive at least a few days without sleep.

See you up the front.

Cheers,

Graham Ashton Executive Programmer

There is a growing awareness amongst musicians and the music industry in general about the risks of noise induced hearing loss from loud music. Unfortunately this awareness does not routinely result in good habits when it actually comes to protecting one of our most valuable assets - our ears!

Audiologists, Steve Grayson-Riley from Musicians hearing Services and Andy Shiach from ACS will be discussing these issues and provide practical advice including the effective use of ear plugs and in-ear-monitors to ensure musicians can effectively practice their craft now and well into the future.

New Zealand’s Street Chant have supported many local heroes including Dead weather, Black Lips, 3ds, Datsuns, The Fall and have played NZ’s Laneway Festival and Big Day Out. They’ve played the 2010 CMJ and 2011 SXSw festivals and some additional LA, New York, washington and Australian shows. Their album ‘Means’ has received radio airplay on the CMJ network and in NZ/Australia.

Strangers profess to take their experiences and turn them into what Sinatra quoted as “the most brutal, ugly, desperate, vicious form of expression it has been my misfortune to hear”, which is also how they best describe themselves.

The Cairos are awesome. They’ve played a silly amount of shows in the past two years, from stadiums (mostly with Powderfinger) to small venues (mostly by themselves and to themselves). Sometimes they even get played on the radio. Any chance to see The Cairos live, is a chance you should take.

After 22 years at the helm of New Zealand’s most loved rock band, Shihad frontman Jon Toogood has built up a treasure trove of musical connections. Lucky for us they have now collided, resulting in one hell of a project.

The Chemist clocked in some solid touring this past year in support of bands such as Birds of Tokyo and Boy & Bear plus numerous festivals and a headline tour of their own. They are currently writing an album to follow up their two acclaimed ePs, due for release in early 2012.

As The Dead Leaves fall together on this powerful debut album, they weave their own enigma. Their debut ‘Cities On The Sea’ is a majestic album that conjures its own panorama of emotions. An immersive experience that engulfs the sum of its parts drawn from every well, from Joy Division to Johnny Cash.

After calling it quits in February 2009, The Getaway Plan reunited for charity in September 2010, playing two shows at the 1,200 capacity Billboards venue. The shows gave the band the life and energy they were missing 18 months prior, and they have since returned as a full time recording and touring band.

On stage or on record, The Medics are truly something to behold. An exhilarating blur of passion and movement, the band bring an all-too-rare sense of urgency to their music that’s underpinned their emergence as one of the country’s most genuinely exciting new bands.

The Laurels are a four-piece from Sydney. Their sound has been described as a mixture of My Bloody Valentine, Spacemen 3, Sonic Youth and The Scientists with a hint of The Beatles. They create luscious, complex and dangerous psychedelic shoegaze that is as mesmerising on the stage as it is on record.

International buzz in LA on Australian band The Novocaines rocketed into overdrive when their track ‘Cup Of Coffee’ was featured in the hit movie ‘Scream 4’. The band is highly acclaimed in Australia for their energetic live shows and indie success with several tracks on receiving triple j airplay.

Since releasing their debut album ‘how to Shampoo a Yak’ in late 2010, Brisbane hard-rockers The Mercy Beat have established themselves as an ever-growing force to be reckoned with. 2011 has seen The Mercy Beat support high profile acts such as The Bronx, AC4, The hard-Ons and Front end Loader.

In the age of 3:30 digital singles, The Paper Scissors are cutting against the grain with their new album ‘In Loving Memory’. ‘In Loving Memory’ is for lovers of long-form albums, the record brings together a range of influences and topics to create a truly international rock soundscape.

Originally from Auckland, NZ, The Psychs are a refreshing blend of Motown, 60’s pop and soul. They take their influence from a wide range of 50’s and 60’s acts including Marc Bolan, The who, The Sonics, Mary wells, Marvin Gaye and The Beatles to name but a few.

The Rescue Ships is Brian Campeau and elana Stone’s new project. At once complex and immediate, it’s their modern take on folk, rock and pop. Brian’s last album was called “genuine genius” by Drum Media and elana is described by the Age as “one of the best singing voices in the country.”

Blue Mountains hip-hop trio Thundamentals have enjoyed their share of critical acclaim for both their debut eP and debut album ‘Sleeping On Your Style’. It’s seen them dominate ‘Next Big Things’ lists, festival stages and radio airwaves in the last 18 months. Their new album ‘FOReVeRLUTION’ is out now.

Melbourne rock band The Vasco era features vocalist and guitarist Sid O’Neil, his brother and bassist Ted O’Neill, and drummer Michael Fitzgerald. hailing from the coastal town of Apollo Bay, the boys recall playing to packed out living rooms before hitting actual stages around Australia.

Trial Kennedy’s second album ‘Living Undesigned’ wields as much grunt and guts as it does gravitas. A bare-boned rock record, but one with soul and heart, the album is a significant step up for the band, and has been received with open ears from fans and industry.

Tiny Ruins is only hollie, and hollie is all Tiny Ruins needs to be. She writes dream-laden folk melodies from New Zealand.
