SPRINGS OF HOPE
MANANTIALES DE ESPERANZA
Bienvenido The Beginning, the End, and the Beginning.
On the final days of the liturgical year, many of the scripture readings for Mass focus on the “Apocalypse.” What is the “end” going to be like? Even the gospel reading for the first Sunday of Advent gets us thinking about the end; not only the end of the world, but also the end of our lives. Just what is this life on earth all about? What happens when life is done? What will new life be like?
Last week we celebrated the Feast of Christ the King. Christ must be the king; the focal point of our life. If Christ is not the center, life does not make sense. Advent is “waiting and preparing” for Christ to return. If we’re close to Christ, are one of His disciples and prepare for his second coming, there’s nothing to worry about. Advent is a time to “refocus.”
As a priest, I often evaluate how I’m doing and if I am using the gifts that God has given me. Priesthood is one of these gifts. Have I been faithful and successful? Have I taught the right things?
Matthew 25: 31-46 tells us how we will be judged. Matthew 25 contains the Corporal Works of Mercy. Have we fed the hungry, given drink to the thirsty, clothed the naked, sheltered the homeless, visited the sick, the imprisoned and the lonely? Have I put enough emphasis on these direct words of Jesus? It’s not that other things have not been important. Personal choices and healthy morality are important, God-like qualities. The point is that Jesus really emphasized these works of mercy. Have I done enough?
I look at the emphasis of Pope Francis, the Vicar of Christ. He has the priorities of preaching pro-life and anti-abortion. The Pope speaks about the evils of racism. The Holy Father is constantly reminding us of how protecting the planet and our environment is a pro-life issue. People are dying from droughts and starvation. I get more than just a little nervous as I examine my conscience, considering how strong I’ve stressed these qualities over my years of priesthood. What will I be judged on? What should I be doing that I’m not doing? How do I know?
Over the past few weeks, we, at the CCWauk, have been talking about being disciples of Jesus. Are we people of prayer, do we go to Sunday Mass, are we evangelizing, giving financially, helping those in need, are we working on our formation as Christians? We are on the road to discipleship and have nothing to worry about. All will be well!! If not; now’s the time to begin seriously practicing good discipleship. Our life’s end and “after” life’s beginning will depend on this!!
Fr. Pat
¿He sido fiel y exitoso? ¿He enseñado las cosas correctas?
¿He hecho lo suficiente?
