    Calls for Papers

    On 15 November 2004 abstracts (250 words) are due from graduate students and young scholars and researchers for the 9th Symposium on Mediterranean Archaeology (SOMA 2005), to be held on 24-26 February 2005 at Chieti University in Central Italy. Topics concerning North Africa and the Western Mediterranean and those that treat the Mediterranean area in a wider perspective are invited; subjects on any Mediterranean area or period will be welcomed. Papers (English only) will be 15 minutes and will be followed by discussion.     On 30 November 2005 registration for posters is due for the 3rd International Sifnean

    Symposium, to be held on 29 June - 2 July 2006 on Sifnos island, Greece; on 8 February 2006 registration for papers is due. Fields of research will include Antiquity, Byzantium, the Frankish Period - Ottoman period, modern history, architecture, the natural environment and settlements, and folklore. Past Symposia presentations have been published in the Proceedings. Participation at the Symposium is free; the Symposium aims to cover travel expenses within Europe and the accommodation expenses on Sifnos for participants who make presentations.     On 1 December 2004 abstracts (200 words) are due for a conference entitled Mediterranean

    Encounters: People, History and Literature, to be held in Cambridge on 11-12 February 2005, hosted by the Middle East Graduate Association (MEGA) of the University of Cambridge in association with the Center for Research in the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities (CRASSH). This conference will bring together studies on the exchange and interaction between various peoples within the Mediterranean in the areas of trade, culture, literature, and relations of power from the ancient to the modern period.     On 17 July 2004, M. Andreadaki-Vlasaki conducted a tour of Recently Excavated Late Minoan III Tombs at Khania: Shaft Graves, Pit Graves and Chamber Tombs. This tour was followed by an opportunity to view and discuss the finds in the Archaeological Museum, Chaledon, Khania.

    On 23 July 2004 M. Schmid conducted a tour of Quartier Mu, the Hypostyle Crypt and the Palace at Mallia. This tour was followed by his INSTAP Study Center Lecture entitled “Evidence of New Architectural Features and Interpretations in Quartier Mu, the Crypt and the Palace at Mallia.”

    The editors of Nestor are saddened to report the death of Paul Rehak of the University of Kansas. In addition to professional service as a book review editor of the American Journal of Archaeology and in the Alumni Association of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, his publications included a variety of subjects concerning the art, society, and archaeology of the prehistoric Aegean.

    The editors of Nestor are saddened to report the death of Miriam Balmuth of Tufts University. Her research in ancient Sardinia included many publications on the relationships between prehistoric Sardinia and the Aegean.
