Not sure what a Local Task Force is? Here’s some background:

Local Task Forces were formed over 20 years ago as a result of a lawsuit against the Commonwealth of PA over the rights of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities to attend school. Today, most task forces include all

students with disabilities who receive special education services, regardless of the type of disability.

If you live in Northampton County, your Local Task Force meets throughout the year at IU 20 in Easton. If you live in Lehigh County, your Local Task force meets at IU 21 in Schnecksville. Participants include family members, public & private service providers, and school district employees. If you have an interest

in special education, you are welcome to attend. As noted previously, conferences are open to all, no matter which intermediate unit is furnishing the

student’s services. For more info about the Local Task Force, you may contact:

Renee Heckman/IU 20: 610-515-6449 or Kelly Danner/IU21: 610-769-4111, ext. 1218

Parting News... Volume 19 , Issue 2 Page 12

Attention Families:

I am looking for a few outgoing folks who would be willing to share their experiences in a panel discussion that I would moderate. Over the years, The Arc has offered workshops on topics such as guardianship, power-of-attorney, ABLE accounts, setting up trusts, etc. While the speakers have been experts, families also appreciate hearing from others who’ve been down the same road. If you have experience in these or

other areas that you’d be willing to share in a future workshop, please let me know. Email replies are preferred: [email protected]. Your May newsletter will contain more details, but here’s a heads up on two upcoming Arc workshops:

May 8, 2019 from 6-8pm: Transition and the IEP

May 18, 2019 from 6-8 pm: Mirando Hacia el Futuro

The 2nd title means Looking Toward the Future. It will be presented entirely in Spanish. The focus is on having high expectations, presuming competence in children with disabilities, & working effectively with your school team.

Happy Spring to all Bi-County readers!
