A retrospective of
world class film maker GirishKasarvalli’s films would mean ajourney into the world of realisticcinema shown with visual artistry, where raw human emotions andsituations are depicted in supersensitive fashion, the beauty ofnature literally forming a backdropat times.
A powerful yet subtlecommunicator, Kasarvalli is ascommitted to his audience as he isto his idiom—his films cannot bereduced to just carriers ofmessages. Each one of themshakes the viewer out of a senseof complacency, and gets himthinking about the insensitivitiesand inequities in society, yet witha sense of hope and idealism.
To make this fine director’sfilms accessible to the public, theBharatiya Vidya Bhavan,Bengaluru Kendra, is organizing
a five-day film festival from July25, with the movies hand-pickedby Kasarvalli himself, offering awide cross-section of his works.
Titled “Chitrotsava”,it will not be a mere screeningof the films; an interactive sessionwith film professionals, headedby the ace director, post-movie,is actually the essence of thefestival, considering thatKasarvalli’s films create anupheaval in one’s mind andheart, all for the better.
One has met, interacted, watched practically every one ofhis films, and heard him being

talked about in film andart circles—enough todraw a picture of theman himself. Kasarvalliis dignified, soft spoken, unassuming, sensitive tohis surroundings, andrespectful of women—

these personality traits arereflected in his films as a fulcrum, making them as understated, sensitive yet powerful incommunication.
Beginning with the inauguralGulabi Talkies, based onpopular Kannada writer Vaidehi’sshort story, and starring Umashri,Chitrotsava will screenGhatashradha—a U. R.Ananthamurthy novel and thefirst film of Kasarvalli, whichdeals with a child widow and thesocial issues arising therein,Thayi Saheba, starring theglamorous Jayamala, whichalmost sounds incongruous in aKasarvalli film, and whichprojects pre-independence dayswith authenticity in all itsshenanigans and the hypocrisy
of men, and Dweepa, one of thebest even among the classy filmsof the director, the festival

provides the best in worldcinema.
After all, Kasarvalli isone of our most celebratedand internationally recognizedfilm makers, having won the bestof national and internationalawards. Kasarvalli is the onlyfilm maker who has made artfilms exclusively, and createda film movement of the genre.
Thaayi Saheba

He is a pioneer in makingwomen-oriented films; howeverhopeless a situation a womanfinds herself in, and howeverstrong and dominating a manmight be, ultimately what triumphsis a woman’s spirit and innerstrength—this has been hisprojection in film after film, reflecting reality.
In essence, Kasarvalli hasalways projected life in all itsrawness and beauty, without beingloud or crass. Sophistication andsubtlety are the cornerstones ofhis works. That Kasarvalli is thedream-man of every woman getsestablished through his portrayalof women in his films.
His films goad theviewer to a sense of social
consciousness, commitment andresponsible citizenship, withoutbeing preachy. One should belucky enough to get to watch hisfilms, that too followed by anopen-house post-mortem, if oneis capable of it at all vis a visKasarvalli!
Dweepa
Ghatashradda
Two films will be screenedeveryday at the Bhavan premises, followed by interactive sessionsafter each. Entry is free.
