Challenges for Shipping Ind. We have to operate more efficiently/economically

during this global financial crisis. Adaptation is the key point for surviving.

Volatile Marine Fuel Market.

We have to comply with international regulations for reducing the energy footprint of our activities for the protection of the environment (1 January 2013).

CO2 Emissions from International Shipping

90% of the world’s trade is carried by sea

2.7% is the proportion of global green house gases

caused by the international shipping.

According to an IMO Greenhouse Gas survey

conducted in 2007 with updates in 2008 and 2009,

CO2 emissions from shipping in a “business as

usual” scenario will increase from the current level

of 1.12 billion tons to 1.475 billion tons in 2020.

The Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP)

incorporates best practices for the fuel efficient operation of

ships, such as better speed management throughout a ships

voyage, for example. Such efficiency measures will significantly

reduce fuel consumption and, consequently, CO2 emissions.

Examine Data and identify operating procedures and

practices that can be performed more efficiently.

Beyond SEEMP!!! Are we operating efficiently enough? Is there space for improvement ? Yes, because the term energy efficiency

was so far a “neglected” term .

Before investing.. There are many off-the-self solutions and innovative ideas in the

market.(jungle market)

We have to promote an energy saving culture on board.

We have to make sure that we are using the already installed

technology to its full potential.

When selecting one of the off-the-self solutions we have to take

into account the capital investment and the payback period.

We don’t want to put additional load on the shoulders of crew.

Efficient use of Auto Pilot Automatic ship-course keeping, requires more or less

frequent changes in rudder position to account for

wind, currents and ship yawing.

Advanced adaptive control techniques can reduce the

overall course changes, unnecessary rudder movement

(that increase vessel's drag) and reduce the overall

travel distance. As a result the corresponding fuel

consumption is reduced.

Page 15: Beyond SEEMP · Beyond SEEMP- Managing Energy ... According to an IMO Greenhouse Gas survey conducted in 2007 with updates in 2008 and 2009, CO2 emissions from shipping in a “business

Fuel Saving = Minimize unnecessary rudder movements.

Existing Auto Pilot Systems the dynamic model of the ship should

be updated from time to time by performing a zigzag test

Consequence : Auto Pilot is not operating with the optimum

parameters

Solution: Upgrade the Auto Pilot so that the dynamic model of the

vessel is automatically updated.

Fuel Saving 1.12%, Capital Investment 11.000 USD

Engine Room Fans Ship’s fan applications are typically over-dimensioned to the actual

need in order to meet vessel’s extreme operating conditions.

Installation of inverter drive units for the engine room ventilation fans in order to control the engine room ambient pressure and temperature.

This solution will reduce the energy consumption and green house gas emissions.

By equipping fan applications with frequency converters to control the fan speed based on the actual air flow demand, energy can be saved significantly.

Affinity Law Part 3 says: "Power is proportional to the cube of the shaft speed" This means that as the speed is reduced the power needed to drive the motor is reduce at three times the rate of the speed reduction (1% reduction in speed = 3% reduction in power consumed)

What is the most obvious measure for saving energy?

Steering Gear Motors

The steering gear systems incorporate two asynchronous

electrical motors of quite significant capacity. We are

investigating whether or not it is feasible to reduce the

operating hours of the motors, which in turn would lead to

significant fuel consumption.

When vessel is at birth or in anchorage, at least one motor is

continuously running. The reason for this is to avoid the turning

of the rudder!!!

Propulsion Efficiency

In the market there are many wake modification systems which promise to increase the propeller efficiency and reduce propeller’s vibration and cavitation.

Optimizing Trim By design a Ship is typically optimized for

a specific operating speed and draft which may not always be the case. At other combinations of draft and speed the trim can often be adjusted to reduce wave resistance and the fuel consumption.

Page 31: Beyond SEEMP · Beyond SEEMP- Managing Energy ... According to an IMO Greenhouse Gas survey conducted in 2007 with updates in 2008 and 2009, CO2 emissions from shipping in a “business

So far… There are no magical solutions.. Our target is to improve the energy efficiency

of every possible operating procedure/practice. We must not leave any stone unturned.

Steering gear example showed us the necessity for promoting an energy saving culture on board.

If we add the individual savings the total fuel saving will be significant (cumulative benefit?)

Food for thought!! How accurately can we measure fuel

saving percentage? Against which benchmark?

SEEMP SEEMP is the first step towards an integrated

energy efficiency system that will incorporate

optimized techniques and procedures for

managing, monitoring and reporting with

respect to energy efficiency thus fuel saving,

thus greener ships.

Page 35: Beyond SEEMP · Beyond SEEMP- Managing Energy ... According to an IMO Greenhouse Gas survey conducted in 2007 with updates in 2008 and 2009, CO2 emissions from shipping in a “business

What will the future bring? The European Commission has signaled its intention to introduce a

monitoring and reporting system to tackle emissions from shipping

vessels in the EU.

The statement says: “Shipping is a global industry and needs global

solutions to address its environmental footprint. As a result, we are

all working towards an internationally agreed global solution to

decrease greenhouse gas emissions from ships.”

We believe the optimum system would be based on real-time,

automated and high-frequency data collection and monitoring

throughout the service life of the vessel allowing transparent and

independent access by all stakeholders to hull performance data.”

Page 36: Beyond SEEMP · Beyond SEEMP- Managing Energy ... According to an IMO Greenhouse Gas survey conducted in 2007 with updates in 2008 and 2009, CO2 emissions from shipping in a “business

Better Monitoring Systems..

Engine Room: the philosophy of the architecture of the existing

engine room alarm and monitoring systems is mainly focused

on safety (alarming).

In the future we will see energy managing software that will

advise chief engineer to switch off unnecessary aux.

machinery, depending on the operation of the vessel ( load

analysis table).

Emission monitoring software, engine efficiency software.

Wheel house: navigation data, meteorological info ( wind,

waves etc)

Page 37: Beyond SEEMP · Beyond SEEMP- Managing Energy ... According to an IMO Greenhouse Gas survey conducted in 2007 with updates in 2008 and 2009, CO2 emissions from shipping in a “business

Need for speed…

All this data that is already available on board will have to be transported ashore to the head office, charterers or to port authorities at high speeds.

The need for real time monitoring of

critical parameters for the energy saving will become more and more demanding.

Page 38: Beyond SEEMP · Beyond SEEMP- Managing Energy ... According to an IMO Greenhouse Gas survey conducted in 2007 with updates in 2008 and 2009, CO2 emissions from shipping in a “business

Conclusion Energy Efficiency is no longer an aim

for the future, it is the demand of the present.
