PASTOR’S PAGE
Dear Friends,
In my sermon on Christmas Eve, I said something to the effect that we’ll leave
Bethel’s sanctuary, go out into the night, and discover that nothing’s changed. The
light of our hand-held candles has been extinguished, the sound of our voices
singing Stille Nacht has faded. We’ll re-enter a world that seemingly could care
less about the birth of a baby in a cow stable some two-thousand years ago.
True. The world hasn’t changed on account of God’s incarnation in Bethlehem, but
what has changed is the orientation of our hearts. Because what we espouse as
Christian believers goes wider and deeper than the Christmas story of angels,
shepherds, and wise men.
Enter the Gospel of John. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with
God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1). John’s Christmas story takes us beyond
Bethlehem’s manger and weaves us into the tapestry of God’s universal plan of
creation and redemption.
That Word (with a capital W) is the Christ – not just Jesus. And that Word, that
Christ, extends Christmas beyond December 25th and inserts it into each and every
day of our lives. We can keep Christmas in our hearts without having to sustain the
high emotion of the holiday. We worship a God of all time. God with us
(Immanuel) means just that. God is with us not only in the extraordinary, but in the
routine and mundane as well. We need not dress-up to be with our God, because
God has dressed-down to be with us.
As we begin the new-year, 2020, take stock in the mystery of God’s presence
within us and among us. Immanuel is more than the sentiment of Christmas tide,
it’s the calling card of the Christian life.
Faithfully,
Pastor Bucholtz
ADVENT BY CANDLELIGHT 2019
Bethel’s Advent Season started with a wonderful
candlelit evening of feast and fellowship for 90 attendees.
The tables were lovely, the food was exceptional only to
be outdone with the program participants who warmed
hearts and sent them into the night and Advent season with
the wonderful message, Jesus is Born! The violin duet by
Jackie Martin and Michelle Roberts enhanced the
Christmas Carols, The Holly and the Ivy & The First
Noel. Cat Meyer delivered the reading, Just Checking In, with sensitivity that produced tears. Alison Robison
presented the reading, Mary Had The Little Lamb, wonderfully only to be followed with the beautiful solo,
Mary Did You Know. A bit of humor is always presented with creativity by Diane Seeger, and Chrismukkah
was no exception. Ava Goff did not disappoint us with an informative introduction about Peter Marshall who
wrote, Keeping Christmas, which she delivered delightfully. Judy Jahnke, again, led us in special prayers and
thoughtful observations while all the music accompaniment was masterfully played by Mary Sue Moore. It was
a great beginning to the Advent Season!
GERMAN COOKIES
We had another successful batch of cookie sales in 2019. Thanks to everyone who helped us bake, taught
us tips about certain cookies, shared their cookie experiences, sampled cookies, bought cookies and enjoyed
them. We raised close to $1,000 towards our Mission projects.
ANNUAL MEETING
Our Annual Meeting is scheduled to be held on January 26 2020 and it will begin at 12:30 p.m. If you are
responsible for turning in any financial reports or other documentation included in the annual report, please
have them in the church office no later than Sunday, January 12.
This is also your opportunity to help your church by serving on any of the open position on the following
committees: Church Board (2 positions), Cemetery Committee (1 position) and Board of Christian Education
(2 positions). If you are interested in learning about any of these positions or you have any questions, please
contact a current Church Board member: Scott Diuble, Judy Fiegel, Judy Laberdee, James Meyer, Shane
Neigebauer, Julie Roberts, or Karen Weidmayer.
CHILI COOK-OFF
The next fundraiser for Bethel’s missions will be on Sunday, January 26
th. It is Chili Cook-Off time! We
need to have our Bethel cooks put on their aprons, pull out the pots and whip up a batch of chili to enter in the
Cook-Off. If you would like to be one of our chili cooks, please let Cathy Moore know.
As a participating cook you would need to bring to church on the 26th
enough chili to provide samples
(approximately 50) and some for people to purchase a bowl for lunch. (In the past we said enough for 35
people. A large, full crock pot tends to be enough.) In addition, bring the list of ingredients. Your chili will be
judged by our learned panel of judges.
Lunch and sampling will begin at 11:00 a.m. (Sunday School children at 11:30 am). Tickets will be sold for
samples. You can buy as many tickets and try as many samples as you like and then purchase a bowl of your
favorite chili if you still have room for more. We will also have grilled cheese sandwiches to purchase and
beverages and veggies for munching.
SPAGHETTI SUPPER, CHOICE RAFFLE AND AUCTION
Leap Day, Saturday, February 29, 2020 is our Annual Spaghetti Supper in support of our mission projects.
We will have tons of fun opportunities that evening. Come and eat delicious spaghetti made by Susan
Luckhardt; bid on lots of great items as part of the Choice Raffle and Auction; hopefully win some of those
items; and after dinner enjoy a delightful concert by Voices in Harmony, a Sweet Adelines group that Judy
Fiegel sings with.
If you have an item you wish to donate for the Raffle and Auction please talk to Susan Luckhardt, Cathy
Moore, Amanda Eisenmann or Tammy Wakevainen ASAP. We need to know of all items by the end of
January (we don’t need actual item until February 29th
). Some of the more popular items from past raffles have
been: gift baskets with children’s toys, etc.; gift cards to local restaurants; jewelry; homemade items.
CHRISTMAS CAROLING
On Sunday, December 8 two teams of carolers set out from the church to sing to some of our members. That is,
after we attempted to sing to some of them over the phone. Most were not at home so we sang to their answering
machines.
We discovered that the residents of some homes we stopped at were not at home. Finally, Group One (the
Manchester group) found Betty Luckhardt at home. She thanked us for taking the time to “sing to her and make
her happy.”
In honor of Tom and Patty Carlton’s 68th wedding anniversary, Group One traveled to their home near Clinton
and caroled. Patty remarked that they had worked together for 68 years, but this was the first time someone had
caroled to them.
In the meantime, Group Two (the Saline group) stopped at residential homes in the area. They found our
Bethel members there and in the process of caroling to them, caroled in the halls and in the dining room to many
other residents. The two youngest members of this group were Lola and Ross Finkbeiner. Patty Henes observed
that most of the residents couldn’t help looking at their beautiful faces while listening to the singing.
THANKS TO OUR CAROLERS!
PROFILES IN FAITH
I’ve asked our 2020 confirmation students to interview an adult mentor from the Bethel congregation about
matters of the Christian faith and its relevance to daily living. Each month a summary of these conversations
will be featured in Bethels Kirche. My hope is that this exercise will deepen the confirmands’ relationship with
their mentor and their church, not to mention giving all of us some inspiration from the heart of a fellow
congregant. - Pastor Bucholtz
I chose Amanda Eisenmann to be my mentor in Confirmation.
Amanda grew up right here in Bethel and her favorite time in
Confirmation were the Saturday classes, Amanda says everyone in
Confirmation that year were all very close and are still friends today.
Amanda says that being together with the class, built relationships
that have carried through adult life. We took lots of field trips and
one I remember most was going to a synagogue where I realized we
are “more the same than different, says Amanda. Confirmation to me
was taking the next big step in my Christian life One of the most
important days was Confirmation Day because it felt like I had a
voice. Confirmation was a good kick-starter to see where I stood
with Jesus Christ.
Then I asked Amanda was how do the sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion influence or sustain your
faith? Amanda says that baptism shows us the growing of the community and reminds me that Jesus Christ is
very important to us. Baptism also shows us how important it is to have both a relationship with Jesus Christ
and the acceptance of the community. Holy Communion brings us peace and being centered, as well as a
reminder our worries should be relieved.
After that, I asked how has your faith in Jesus Christ made a difference in your family, work, and social
life? Amanda said that Jesus Christ loved me first so that now I can love too. Jesus is a an example of the kind
of love that you should give. Everyone should be respected the way Jesus respects us.
Then, I asked Amanda what her advice to me as an adolescent in 2019 was and how I can become and remain a
faithful follower of Jesus and an advocate of Christian faith and witness wherever in life I go? Amanda
responded by saying, always try to have a conversation with Jesus, and try to bring thoughts to Jesus Christ
because you are never alone in your fight; he is always listening. Another tip was that having any relationship
with Jesus is better than having nothing. The last piece of advice was to never feel guilty for not always being at
church, because every part of your life is important. For example, you can ask friends questions about Jesus,
have a conversation about faith, or just check to be sure Jesus is in your life. There are many things you can do
in addition to going to church to keep Jesus in your life, like listening to a sermon podcast or praise music.
The last question I asked Amanda was, what is the value of church membership, and how does belonging to
Bethel Church through Confirmation differ from belonging to the Body of Christ through baptism? Amanda had
said that the value is contributing to something bigger than yourself. Amanda ended her advice with, “Always
have a support system and never judge new people. Be welcoming and open to others. Different people often
have the same questions and values as you do. Remember Sunday is a “reset” day.”
Sincerely,
Paige Shankland
I chose Bonnie Mitchell to be my mentor. She is so kind to guide me
throughout this year of Confirmation.
Bonnie Mitchell grew up in Emanuel United Church of Christ in
Manchester. When she was in Confirmation, she went through Exam
Sunday, and it was a relief to her after it was over. She realized that her
confirmation was just the beginning of her faith journey. During her year
of Confirmation, she was able to open up to Christ. If Bonnie could, she
would take Confirmation class again because she still continues to have so
many questions.
Bonnie’s favorite part of the Bible is the New Testament. The readings in
the New Testament include good moral things that Bonnie has used in her
life, especially in her work life and with her family. Bonnie’s message to all of us is to remind ourselves how
special we are. We are God’s children, people who continue to grow in faith. We will never have all the
answers, so Bonnie tells us to keep questioning; remind yourself that God is always present.
Sincerely,
Emma Shankland

MISSION TRIPS 2020
In 2020 we are not planning a trip to Re-Member in South Dakota, however we will continue to support Re-
Member. We are tossing around ideas for alternative mission trips, closer to home. One suggestion is to travel
to Crossroads and do a work project for a few days. We will continue to visit World Medical Relief several
times during the year. If you have a suggestion for a mission trip please talk to one of the Mission Team folk:
Judy Jahnke, Shane Neigebauer, Susan Luckhardt, Cathy Moore, Bonnie Mitchell, Amanda Eisenmann, Patty
Lambarth to name a few.

a vital part of keeping the life of Bethel Church running smoothly.
We count on you to fulfill this obligation. If you are unable to perform the service at your scheduled time,
please arrange for a substitute, and inform the church office at 429-8530 or Joe Moore (Ushers and Greeters) at
428-8687, Renee St. Charles (Lay Readers) at 429-8530, Kristi Campbell (Child Care) at 330-0029 and Bonnie

ELVIRA M. VOGEL SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Higher Education Scholarships: This scholarship fund, initially founded by Elvira and her family, was
established to sustain Elvira’s desire to support laypeople in their training for ministry and to further their faith
journeys through a participatory level of church ministry and greater outreach into the worldwide community.
The committee has now extended its reach to consider support for church members seeking post-high school
assistance, such as colleges, universities, and trade schools on an annual basis. May 15, 2020 is the deadline for
next year.
Other Scholarship Fund Activities: Other types of educational grants and scholarships, not including Higher
Education Scholarships, will continue to be considered should funds be available. If necessary, we may need to
limit grants/scholarships for non-church events to two per person. In the past, these have included assistance
for high school trips abroad for cultural awareness, youth leadership conferences, classroom supplies, workshops
relating to a person's area of expertise, retreats, middle school & high school trips, etc. Awarding of these
grants/scholarships is based on, among other criteria, participation in the life of the church. These
applications can be submitted at any time of year. Any person who wishes to request assistance should do so in
writing to a member of the committee, the members of which are: Darlene Kuebler, Joann Finkbeiner, Sula
Horodeczny, Cathy Moore, Mary Sue Moore, and Lou & Elvira Vogel's daughters, Virginia, Valorie, and Sue
Ellyn.
Marlene Glasser returned scholarship awarded to her in September for the RN Refresher Course because the
course was eventually cancelled. She was grateful for the scholarship, but naturally, disappointed. We hope it
might be rescheduled at some later date.
The Elvira Vogel Scholarship Fund is supported by our Sauerkraut Supper. Date of the 2020 supper is
Friday, NOVEMBER 6. Please mark your calendars.

CROP WALK REPORT
Anita Herman, Treasurer of the Manchester Area CROP Hunger Walk Committee, reported that we exceeded
our goal of raising $5,000.00 by over $352.36 or a total of $5,352.36. 25% of that total was returned to Manchester
and divided evenly between the Community Resource Center, Manchester Family Service and Manchester Area
Senior Citizens Council. Thanks to the Bethel walkers for raising $736.00 of that amount.
Our walker goal was 50. Actually we had 51 walkers and at least two dogs. 11 of those walkers and one dog
were from Bethel and we thank them all.
It was the 25th Manchester Area Walk. Thanks to Marlene Uphaus of Sharon United Methodist Church who
has chaired the Manchester Area walk for 8 of those 25 years.
WOMEN OF BETHEL
Welcome to 2020. Prayers for a happy and blessed new year.
Women of Bethel are planning a fun outing on Tuesday, January 14. We will meet for lunch and possibly
see a movie depending on what is playing. More details to follow. Coordinators are Diane Seeger and Eleanor
Beitelshees.
Funeral luncheon coordinators for January, February and March are Joyce Guenther, Norma Keller, Diane
Kring, and Susan Mann. Kitchen steward for January is Mariel Peck.
THANK YOU!
Many thanks to the Women of Bethel, the Bethel Church Board, and many other parishioners who wished
me and my family Merry Christmas with thoughtful cards and gifts. So very much appreciated!
~ Pastor Bucholtz
Thank you to Bethel Church for the pretty dishtowel and chocolates and coming to sing carols. Sorry I wasn’t
home to hear it.
~ Irma Weidmayer
Thank you for your generous donation of mittens/gloves, and hats for the Community Resource Center. Your
contribution was so appreciated.
~Manchester Library Staff
Manchester Family Service is most grateful to Bethel Church and especially the Sunday school for donating the
many hats, gloves, mittens, and scarves for our Annual Christmas Shop. Our clients were so appreciative to
have such a big choice. They weren’t all taken, so the excess adult sizes were taken to Vespers and the smaller
sizes to the Salvation Army.
Thank you one and all!

RECYCLING AT BETHEL CHURCH
Our waste disposal company will recycle many items if they are left by the trash bins in back of the church.
The list of items is posted in the kitchen above the three-compartment sink under which there are cartons for
them. Also, Renee has a copy of the list in her office. Please check the list to be sure the item is acceptable
before placing it in the recycling cartons.
There is a tub, marked for recycling, for paper and cardboard in the Church Office under the counter next to
the copier. All recycled items are frequently placed in bags provided for recycling and taken outside to the trash
bins.
Our Sunday worship bulletins are recycled. If you don’t wish to take yours home, please leave it on the
back pew in the sanctuary or annex. THANKS!
