Bethany Christian School Newsletter 2018 1 NEWSLETTER BETHANY CHRISTIAN SCHOOL IN THIS ISSUE Welcome to our Week 3 Newsletter for Term 1. Our week has been full with two athletics carnivals for our Year 2 to Year 6 students. The weather turned out to be mild enough for students to enjoy the day and for family and friends to come along and enjoy cheering them on. Many of our students enjoy these days and have the opportunity to shine out on the track and field and we also have many other students who do their best to participate and cheer on their friends. Thank you to those who volunteered and also those of you who came along to celebrate with our students. It was also great to enjoy a latte in the Function Room and chat with some of you as I walked around to see how smoothly the days have gone. This is the first year that we have had the second oval available which certainly simplified holding the events. I would like to thank Ben, Nathan and Cherie who always do a great job of putting together an excellent day for our students. In Week 5 our Year 5 students head up the river to the Illawonga camp site to enjoy a range of outdoor activities together. Camps provide excellent opportunities for us to build new skills, try new things and build community. Our teachers work hard to ensure that these days are full of fun and learning in a totally different setting to school. On Monday 12th March, there is a public holiday. This is also the first week that our Reception students attend school on a Wednesday. This four-day week is a good start to building their capacity as full-time school students. However, there are also two more short weeks with Easter falling within the school term. Easter break begins on Friday 30th March and so school finishes early on Thursday 29th at 12:10pm. This aligns with Temple Christian College and allows families to travel safely if you are going away for the Easter weekend. School resumes on Tuesday 3rd April. Our school Cross Country event will be held on Thursday 22nd March with students from Year 2 through to Year 6 running at designated times throughout the day. Our Autumn Fair will be held on Saturday the 24th March between 10am and 2pm. It will be a day of fun and we welcome you to come along and enjoy the day, but also, would love to have your help either with your child’s class stall or to hold a stall of your own. Please see page 3 & 4 for more information on how to get involved. I pray that you and your family will enjoy a restful weekend. DEPUTY’S CORNERSome of you may have been aware of a significant traffic incident which occurred before 3pm on Tuesday 20th of February at the Temple entrance on Countess Street. The police are still in the process of investigating the crash. Fortunately, no one involved was injured significantly during the incident. An enormous shout of ‘thanks’ goes to all of our parents who made Tuesday’s potentially chaotic school pick up such a smooth and calm procedure. Thank you for slowing down and demonstrating such patience. Thanks is also due to those parents who jumped in and supported the much shaken drivers involved in the incident.

If you witnessed the incident on Tuesday 20th of February, SAPOL would very much like to speak with you. Please contact the front office and leave your name and a contact number so that we can then pass onto SAPOL. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

There have been a number of near misses on this road in the past. It serves as an excellent reminder that it is so very important to observe and obey the traffic rules. What has become very apparent is the need to remind our road users to please abide by the no-parking and no-standing markings on the road. By parking illegally in Countess Street and Byron Bay Drive, it makes it difficult for the flow of traffic and can lead to accidents. Speed is also a major concern, with many adults commenting on how fast some drivers are driving past the school, especially at drop-off and pick-up times. To help support our school, over the next few weeks our community liaison officer, Constable Steven Pike (SAPOL), will be coming to observe the traffic.

I wish you all a very safe week with your families!

God bless you,

Debbie CliffordDeputy Principal

Autumn Fair is only 5 weeks away! It’s always such a highlight in the year and a great way for our community to come together and enjoy a fabulously fun, family day out. Please keep Saturday, 24th March free. We’d love to see you there!

This year, we have a bumper line up of rides, including one of Adelaide’s newest attractions, the Wacky Shack. Suitable for the whole family, Wacky Shack allows you to wind your way through wacky tricks and obstacles, before sliding through a treehouse on a twisted slide. Check out the photo for more details.

For hungry tummies, we have some delicious food options lined up as well. Cuisines so far include Mexican, Indian and Australian. Snacks and treats so far include Devonshire tea, fairy floss, waffles, home bakes, popcorn and sour straps. And, let’s not forget lots of coffee, cool drinks and chilled water to keep us all feeling hydrated and refreshed.

Applications are now open to members of the community who would like to host a stall at the fair. Everyone is welcome to apply, whether you’re a business, hobbyist, community club, special interest group or entrepreneurial individual who would like to launch a new product line or service. Pick up an application form from the Front Office or contact the school to request one to be sent to you via email. All applications will be considered with seriousness and care.

Opportunities to become involved in helping to create and host the fair are now open too. Everyone is welcome, no matter how much time or talent you may or may not have. There’s a myriad of ways to become involved, including:

• help prepare food

• assist with decorating

• donate ingredients

• help serve on a stall

• become a ‘runner’

• welcome families as they arrive

• help set up/pack down

• take tickets at a ride

• assist with performance groups

• join a team to letterbox drop flyers

• help laminate and put up posters

• assist with clearing tables and wash dishes

• or any other practical ideas you may have…

If you’d like to volunteer some time, we’d love to hear from you. Please see your child’s classroom teacher for more information and/or to give them your contact details, availability and areas of interest.

TERM 1 HIGHLIGHTS

Coles Sports for School

VolunteersThe Bethany Christian School library is in need of some volunteers. If you have some free time to spare, please come to the front office to express your interest. Only approved volunteers will be considered. If you are not an approved volunteer and would like to become one, please come to the front office to pick up the paper work to begin the process. Any questions regarding volunteering at Bethany can be directed to Abby Penaluna at the front desk.

A couple of weeks ago we sent out an email asking volunteers to inform us if they are still interested in volunteering here at Bethany in 2018. If you have not received the email or have not responded, can you please contact Abby in the front office.

This year Bethany Christian School will again participate in the ‘Coles Sports for Schools’ program. The program gives our school the opportunity to earn sports equipment by collecting vouchers from Coles. Every time you shop at Coles and spend more than $10, you will receive one ‘Sports for Schools’ voucher. Please bring in the vouchers and place them in the bins provided at the front desk and the student desk. Every voucher collected will go towards our tally to help us order free sports equipment for our students.

Premier’s Reading Challenge

The Premier’s Reading Challenge has started. It is a great initiative that encourages reading and improves literacy skills for children. To participate students need to read 12 books including 8 from the PRC list. The Premier’s Reading Challenge is open to all students. The recording sheets were sent home last week but if you have not received a copy please see your child’s teacher. The completed forms need to be returned to school by 7th September and prizes will be awarded in November.

For more information about the initiative please visit the website www.prc.sa.edu.au
