Beth Hillel is an egalitarian

Conservative synagogue

rooted in the ancient

traditions of the Torah while

growing to meet the changes

and challenges of our world.

Its core are the many people

of different ages and

backgrounds who have

chosen to make it their

spiritual home, joining

together for prayer, learning,

and celebration. The many

branches of Beth Hillel’s

community provide support to

its congregants, reaching out

to each other and welcoming

our neighbors as together we

learn from the past and teach

for the future.

MINYAN POLICY WHEN THERE IS A SHIVA MINYAN Synagogue policy is that, when there is a shiva minyan at a lo-cation five miles or less from the shul, then the minyan will move to that location. Notices will be posted at the synagogue and included in synagogue e-mail.

CELEBRATING SIMCHOT It is wonderful that so many congregants are celebrating special family simchot with their synagogue family. If you have a special birthday or anniversary coming up, call the office to schedule sponsoring/ helping to sponsor a kiddush or oneg. THE MEE SHEBAYRACH PRAYER LIST

Every name that is provided to Rabbi Atkins or the office is kept on our prayer list and shared at Shabbat morn-ing services for a month after inclusion. (English or He-brew names are both acceptable). If you provide an ad-dress, a letter is sent to that individual, saying that s/he is being remembered – it is an essential part of the prayer process. We say prayers for individuals of any religion. If you wish a name to be included after a month, please just call the office. The prayer list has a section where individuals are remembered for as long as appropriate. You can either attend a Shabbat morning service to in-clude a name or, as said above, share it with the office or rabbi at any time.

Rabbi Atkins is always most happy to assist congregants in life-cycle events. Here he is helping Mickey Kesten affix a mezuzah in the door-way of her new apartment in Sum-merwood. Call YOUR RABBI when-ever you have such an event in your immediate family.

From Rabbi Atkins’ Desk

Rabbi Gary Atkins

Your Rabbi

I am writing this column two weeks before the start of Hanukkah. Or, as we are calling it this year, Thanksgivakkah. Hopefully this last edition of the 2013 Chai-lites will reach you while Hanukkah is still being celebrated. I hope you have had/are having a joyous Hag HaUrim, the festival of lights. Iris and I spent the first two days with family in New Hampshire, celebrating both holidays... each with a message appropriate to today. This past month has seen a lot of discussion in the Jewish community about both what it means to be Jewish and the future of our Jewish community. For a few weeks at our Lunch and Learn study group we talked about the Pew Report, a recent demographic study of American Judaism. And earlier in November, the Federation movement had a large convocation in Jerusalem. I can't invite you to Jerusalem, but I can invite you to join our Monday noon study and discussion sessions! Iris and I had, earlier this month, a most enjoyable 10 days in California. We attended a Rabbinical Assembly conference in Los Angeles and

then spent several days in San Diego. It was a most beautiful city. We walked a lot on the promenade around one of the bays. We did sightseeing and saw some beautiful sites... exactly what a vacation should be. We even visited with a congregant who was also visiting family out there! November was indeed a busy month. My Adult Ed class on Exotic Jewish communities will look at other places in the spring, as we will have completed our study of the Jews of Nigeria and Kaifeng, China. We had a wonderful Library Shabbat / Adult Education weekend – thanks again to Deb Gutcheon and Barbara Merkelson, to Tobie Katz and Myrna Schaffman and their committees for putting everything together. There is a lot of programming the first part of December. Shabbat services continue weekly. I expect (I certainly hope) that our Board of Directors will approve resuming our home services in the Spring... but I am not so sure about the outreach services. December will see some special activities.... Israel Shabbat/ our final congregational Shabbat dinner of 2013... and a kiddush and cake celebrating my 68th birthday. Yes, winter and 2014 are both arriving. Especially as we have a number of “snowbirds,” your presence at our worship services will be especially

appreciated... it is also the opportunity to bring a little bit of God's presence into your lives on a daily or weekly basis. May each day find you cognizant of your blessings......

The President’s Column

By the time you read this we have passed Turkey-day and are in the middle of Chanukah. We of course all know the story, the oil that was found was only enough for one day but somehow it lasted for eight days. We all know that it was a miracle that happened long ago, but it seems to me that we can take from it something more lasting and meaningful. It teaches us not to be negative, that when things seem bleak and without hope we should not give up. Light often symbolizes hope, such as in “the light at the end of the tun-nel.” This year at Chanukah as we light the candles let the light serve to offer us hope that we as a Beth Hillel family will find the way to the future that is right for us.

That leads neatly to an update on our future planning committee. In November the Board received an interim report on what is being ex-plored and it is exciting to know that there seem to be options. The committee is working hard investi-gating those options that seem to have some merit and still hope to be in a position to provide the Board with a more conclusive re-port by the end of the year. It re-mains the plan for the Board to look over the options and at some point in the early part of 2014 to hold a congregational meeting to look at what seem to be the choic-es and to get your input.

Also related to moving forward, Rabbi Gary’s contract is up at the end of June 2014 and per its terms November was the time to decide if we wished to renew. With uncom-mon concurrence of views, the Board of Directors voted to enter into negotiations with the hope that we can come to terms, quickly we hope.

If you have been paying attention, you know that we have been very busy with our fall programming. We had a successful Shabbat service

at the Hebrew Home with 25 of our members joining with 25 residents of the Hebrew Home for a mean-ingful morning for all. Our mem-bers who attended are looking for-ward to the second trial service with the hope that it will be as en-joyable and well-attended as the first. The Hebrew Home service followed our first Shabbat dinner of the year which, to no surprise at all, was enjoyable and delicious (spawning fleeting thoughts of sell-ing Steve’s chicken and potatoes as a fundraiser). Many thanks to Steve Miller, Tammi Kraushaar and the entire Shabbat dinner crew for another wonderful family gath-ering. I hope everyone who can will make it to the December dinner and reserve early. One thing we have learned is that late reserva-tions are causing problems and added expense. It really would help if everyone would cooperate and meet the reservation deadline.

In November, our library and Adult Ed. committees, with some help from our Jewish War Veterans, teamed up to bring us an educa-tional weekend with guest speaker Sidra DeKoven Ezrahi. The attend-ance was good and the discus-sions well-received. Many thanks to Barb Merkelson, Deb Gutcheon, Myrna Schaffman and Tobie Katz for putting the weekend together and to the Jewish War Veterans for supplying the oneg shabbat. We also had another successful home service at Paula and David Baram's house and an outreach service at Ellie and Mark Gold-berg's house. With the fine partici-pation for home services it seems likely that more are on the horizon.

Looking ahead to December we have many varied activities for your participation. At the beginning of the month our Israeli Affairs Committee under Leon Carr has arranged for our local Israeli Emis-saries to join us and speak at the

December 6 Friday night service which also is simcha Shabbat. The December Shabbat dinner is on the 13 (get those reservations in), and on December 24th, erev-Christmas we will have our First Memorial Barbara Leslie Family Game Night. It should be a fun evening so bring the family and grandkids. There will be games and videos, and you can bring your favorite ones along as well. I hope you all will try to join us. Being to-gether as a family is the most im-portant thing we have.

Until next month,

Jackie

Stacks

Thank you to all who attend-ed our Library and Adult Education Shabbat Author Weekend. We were fortunate to have renowned author and scholar Professor Sidra DeKoven Ezrahi as our guest speaker. Her thought provoking topic, “A Century of Women; One Woman’s Journey,” and a presen-tation of short stories by Philip Roth and Grace Paley provided members with opportunity to reflect and discuss. Many thanks to our members who worked to make it such a special event. We hope you enjoyed the week-end as much as we did! Please continue to take advantage of visiting the library, where there are many good books to be found. Barbara Merkelson and Deb

Gutcheon

Social Action/Caring

The CHESED CARING COMMITTEE continues to provide comfort to the congregants of Beth Hillel Synagogue. The Hebrew word "chesed" does not have a precise English equivalent but is probably closest to "loving-kindness." In the Jewish moral tradition, "chesed" is associated with love, giving, and altruism. For congregants who are ill, hospitalized, undergoing rehab, or otherwise in need of prayers and well wishes, our committee members are very generous with their time. We send cards of encouragement; we visit people in hospitals or their homes, rehab, or nursing home facilities; we call to let them know that they are in our thoughts and our prayers. On occasion, we provide meals and an occasional ride. We have challot and small bottles of grape juice to share just before Shab-bat. When we offer a chamsa/dove as a "good luck charm" - we see faces light up. We, in return, are blessed by the knowledge that we are providing comfort to those most in need. We can only provide our services if/when we are aware of the need. If you or a loved one wish to be on the receiving end of our services, you may call me (Iris) directly (860-726-9312) or leave a message at the synagogue office. Privacy will always be protected - unless you wish to extend the network of well wishers! Iris E. Atkins and Joel Neuwirth Co-Chairs, Chesed Caring Committee
