It’s been eight years since the Best of L.I. began and I am proud that it has grown to be the largest business awards program in the history of Long Island.

It is an honor to have Bethpage Federal Credit Union on board as the competition’s naming rights sponsor. Their participation has given the program a huge burst of growth and energy.

When I see one of the thousands of Bethpage Best of L.I. banners hanging outside a local business, I know that the owner has made their mark on Long Island.

The Bethpage Best of L.I. program is important to all of us because it promotes quality commerce. We recognize three to four winners in more than 390 categories. These businesses and professionals are the backbone of our community and they work hard to establish and maintain their reputation. It’s not easy to become a Bethpage Best of L.I. winner and I have the utmost respect for every one of them.

The 2013 Bethpage Best of L.I. campaign was extra special due to the circumstances that so many endured after Sandy. It was remarkable that votes continued to pour in even during massive power outages and storm-related turmoil.

It was gratifying to see some of the affected businesses continue to promote the program and then become winners. I am proud of the effort and dedication of our team at the Long Island Press, they also worked through some difficult conditions and ensured that we never missed a beat, or a vote. I am filled with pride whenever someone asks how we are able to put it all together and deliver a program of this magnitude.

The award categories show the many diverse strengths of Long Island and we always welcome suggestions for new categories. For 2013, I was especially excited to add the Best Manufacturer category. It was interesting to learn just how many products are made right here at home. My personal favorite category addition this year is Best Pretzel and I will make sure to try a twisted treat from each winner.

In 2013 we also expanded our Bethpage Best of L.I. Weddings categories to help Long Islanders find the best of everything for their special day.

In addition, our 2013 App upgrade, launches in February. It offers an expanded category listing that will give users easy access to all of the 2013 Bethpage Best of L.I. winners and nominees.

My family loves to explore Long Island and we use the Bethpage Best of L.I. App to provide us with ideas on where to go, what to see and do. It’s like having our shopping and entertainment itinerary planned for the year. I suggest that you do the same and patronize as many of the winning businesses and professionals as possible. I encourage you to make your own decisions as to whom you personally feel is the best because that is the spirit of this program.

I trust that you have enjoyed our three-part series of the Bethpage Best of L.I. issues. It is an honor to champion the efforts of this program and I look forward to delivering even more in 2014.

In last week’s issue we gave you the winners in the Food & Drink, Sports & Activities, Restaurants, Nightlife & Spirits, Arts & Entertainment and Automotive categories.

This week, we’re rolling out the red carpet and hanging the velvet ropes. In this issue, you’ll find the winners of the 2013 Bethpage Best of the Best, a list of the top 25 “vote getters”, those companies who had their supporters turn out in masses to cast their votes.

Categories are meaningless in the Best of the Best competition. The best doctors are pitted against the best ribs, the best photographer against the best pet hotel, the best bridal shop against the best psychic. It’s exciting—every first-place winner is on equal footing for this battle to the top.

The votes for the Top 25 are the result of fierce devotion and dedication from the winners followers and patrons.

In this issue you’ll also learn about The Great Eight, winners who have

won Best of since its inception, every year. Over the past eight years we’ve seen two presidents in office, a roller coaster economy, the birth of the iPhone and services like Netflix render video stores obsolete.

That’s nearly a decade of major changes, but The Great Eight have consistently kept their winning streak unbroken, and to have cemented a place on this list for that length of time is amazing.

We know there’s technically nothing better than the “best.” Still, every year, when the Bethpage Best of L.I. results are calculated, we are amazed to see just how many “bests” there are on our shores.

Every year, when the voting is all said and done, we look back at the winners, we scour the numbers, and we find what we call “The Best of the Best”: the top-vote-getters, not just in their own categories, but across the competition as a whole.

This year, our Bethpage Best of L.I. program produced its greatest and most vast results by a wide margin: We had more than 1 million votes cast, more than 5,000 unique nominees and more than 900 winners.

The Best of the Best list is comprised of the top 25 vote-getters across that entire spectrum of winners: Pediatrician versus French fries. Psychic versus pet store.

Every first-place winner dukes it out in a steel-cage match from Montauk Point to the Nassau-Queens border.

“You never know what’s going to happen,” he adds. “There are a lot of great shelters out there.”

Little Shelter is the oldest humane society in Suffolk County and one of the only no-kill shelters on LI.

He’s also a pretty great guy. Joel, this year’s Best Long Island Personality, is a champion for LI’s clammers and played the 12-12-12 concert to raise money for Superstorm Sandy victims.

There are hundreds of computer services companies on Long Island so taking first place in the Best Computer Services category is impressive enough, but being among the top 25 vote-getters of the competition is a major feat.

It is often said that every cell in a human body is changed over a period of seven years and in year eight, the human body is basically born anew.

To be an eight-time Bethpage Best of L.I. winner is, simply put, to defy the rules of nature! To do in succession what most fail to do even once. To consistently and repeatedly adhere to standards that, to many, are unattainable for even a fleeting moment.

Dynasties, by definition, do not last, simply because it is nigh impossible to maintain total and infallible dominance in any particular field. It requires intense effort, steadfast concentration, resilience, and never-ending wherewithal to adapt to change.

In a world where your reputation can shift from positive to negative with a single unfavorable comment immortalized on the Internet, to garner an overwhelming number of votes from our Island is nothing to scoff at and 27 businesses have managed to do it eight years in a row.

We’d also like to point out that we are edging closer and closer to the 10-

year mark. How many of these winners will carry their crown to what we believe will be the most important list in the Bethpage Best of L.I.’s history? We’ll have to wait until 2015 to find out.

We had many impressive wins in this year’s Bethpage Best of L.I. competition and you might be wondering how these businesses made it to the top. Aside from constantly meeting and surpassing customers’ expectations, these winners brought in the votes.

You, Long Island, told us they were the best. Every year Long Islanders pick the nominee

pool and everyone has an equal opportunity to be represented. These nominees are then compiled into a master ballot and voting is open every Oct. 1 to Dec. 15 on the Web at BestOf.LongIslandPress.com.

During this 75-day window, Long Islanders can vote for whatever local store, restaurant, business or person they feel should hold a Bethpage Best of L.I. title.

Each voter is allowed one vote per IP address per day for each category—Arts and Entertainment, Food & Drink, Nightlife & Spirits, Health and Wellness, Weddings, Restaurants, among others.

Once the voting ends, results are tallied and double-checked for fraudulent voting or obvious abuse (those votes are then removed). After this the results are added up again. UPickEm, a third party administrator, administers the Bethpage Best of L.I. voting pages.
