Gary Heise has beenteaching at UNC for 14years and has been votedBest Professor in theCollege of Natural andHealth Sciences. Before hecame to the University ofNorthern Colorado, hespent three years atLouisiana State University.

"I’ve met some wonder-ful people here at UNC,and I’ve tried to keeplearning from my fellowprofessors and other pro-fessionals in NHS andacross campus — I’mgrateful to them all,” Heisesaid. “I also thoroughlyenjoy teaching and advis-ing our students, many ofwhom are incredibly hard-

working, inspirational andfun. Ours is a terrific cam-pus community."

He got his bachelor’sand Ph.D at Penn StateUniversity and his master’sat Arizona State University. He is currently a professorof sport and exercise sci-

ence at UNC and was notexpecting to receive thishonor.

“Its (UNC’s) emphasison student learning is atrait that reminds me ofboth larger and smallerschools,” he said. “At largeruniversities, instruction

can often take a back seatto research and, at smallerprivate schools, instructionis financially out of reach tomany students. UNC offerssome research programsthat are as good as those atlarger universities, butUNC also offers many aca-demic programs thatremind me of programs atsmaller schools.”

Heise enjoys whatUNC has to offer to stu-dents and is grateful tothe students who votedfor him and offered themsome advice.

“Thanks a bunch,”Heise said. “Study hard forfinal exams this semester.Take advantage of asmany experiences as pos-sible here at UNC — it’s agreat place.”

The votes have beencast and the BestSandwich is at Cheba Hutlocated on 8th Avenue. The restaurant has beenopen for business andserving the students ofUNC for three years.

The manager is cur-rently Mitch Jones, whograduated from UNChimself in 2009.

“A creative theme iswhat makes the sand-wiches themselves standout,” Jones said.

What makes them sogood, and definitely backsup the vote for BestSandwich, is the fact that

Cheba Hut uses qualityingredients.

“We make them withlots of love,” Jones said.“They’re customizableby taste, so it’s howeveryou like it, whenever youlike it.”

Patrick’s Irish Pub, locat-ed in downtown Greeley, hasprovided the of-age collegestudents with a variety ofwell-crafted beers.

For this year’s Best ofUNC, Patrick’s won BestBar — and this isn’t for thefirst time either. Patrick’shas the comfortable pub-style feel, with a dark hard-wood interior and a friendlyatmosphere with a greatselection of drinks.

“We have the most beerson tap (in Greeley),” saidKristin Hamling, manager ofPatrick’s. “We like to bringpeople in to try new things. It’s kind of a learning experi-ence.”

Patrick’s has alwaysbeen a college-friendly bar.Asked about the recentopen-container law passedin Greeley, allowing bar-hoppers to bring their beersfrom bar to bar, Hamlingexplained the change.

“It’s made Friday nighteven crazier,” Hamling said.“We’d love to see more stu-dents come on Friday andget involved.”

Friday nights at Patrick’s

features live music to helpcreate the party atmosphere.Maybe one of its strongestpoints, though, is the bar’sselection of beers. Hamlingwould encourage a new-comer to Patrick’s try a beerthey are unfamiliar with.

“Try a new beer; it’s allgood pub beer,” Hamlingsaid. “People like to trythings out of their comfortzone here, and they usuallyreally enjoy it.”

The Rio Grande restau-rant in Greeley is known forgreat food and a fun envi-ronment, but most of all, itsmargaritas. For the secondyear in a row now, The Riohas been voted best mar-

garita by the students fromthe University of NorthernColorado. This has a lot ofpeople wondering just whatis it that makes these mar-garitas so special.

“I think it goes a long withour mission to provide sanc-tuary to the world,” saidShannon Hayhurst, manager

at The Rio. “To offer the bestmargaritas and Mexican foodon this side of the RioGrande.”

Most of the food offered atThe Rio is made from scratchand that same amount of careis put into the margaritas. TheRio has been in the communi-ty for 27 years and the same

margarita has been offeredthat entire time.

“It all started when thethree founders decided tomix a whole of tequila andother ingredients whilelistening to James Brownand created a master-piece,” Hayhurst said.“They initially forgot the

recipe the next morningbut tried again and wroteit down this time.”

So it just goes to showsome things do not needto change with time toremain delicious. Thevoters have spoken, as theRio retains its title as thebest margarita in Greeley.
