Principal’s Notes September, 2010

Dear West Elementary Families:

Welcome to West Elementary. Hopefully by now you have seen our newly

renovated cafeteria, gymnasium and music classrooms as well as the multiple

covered walkways that we have added to the campus. The campus has never

looked better!

We are pleased to welcome Stacy Bingman, our new third and fourth grade

Building Principal, to our leadership team. Dana Hilton continues to supervise

pre-kindergarten and kindergarten in Building B and share supervision of first

grade in Building D. As Site Principal, I will continue to oversee the entire site as

well as first and second grades in Building D.

We streamlined the required “Meet the Teacher” enrollment paperwork to our

cafeteria this year in an effort to more efficiently service families with more than

one child, rather than relying on our classroom teachers to manage all the

paperwork. The intent was to provide a more relaxed situation for you and your

child to meet the teacher in the classroom, which we were successful in

accomplishing. For those of you who experienced long lines between 3:15 and

4:30, we apologize. Unfortunately, the long lines during this time were combined

with a very unexpected air conditioning malfunction. We sincerely apologize for

this inconvenience. To decrease lines, we are looking at scheduling two nights for

Meet the Teacher next school year.

If you have visited our campus at the beginning or ending of the school day, you

have probably experienced the traffic challenges. As our student population

increases, we ask for your patience and cooperation. We strongly encourage you

to utilize our bus service. Riding the bus is the safest, most efficient mode of

transportation to and from school. As more students take advantage of bus

Principal’s Notes Continued transportation, fewer cars will contribute to the traffic congestion. As a reminder, the oval is

closed from 8:00-9:00 a.m. and again from 3:00-4:00 p.m. Please do not attempt to pull

into the oval during these times. Parking across the street at West Intermediate is always an

option after school.

Lobbyguard is another key to your child’s safety. Parents are not permitted pass the office

entries without a Lobbyguard nametag. Please remember that you will need your ID each

time you go through Lobbyguard or you may purchase a keytag for $5.00 in any of our

building offices. All visitors are required to go through Lobbyguard. We look forward to

working with you and your child to provide the best education possible. We encourage families

to get involved in our volunteer program as well as our “Men with Class” program.

Respectfully,

Suzanne Lair, Site Principal, ext. 5601

JWE PTAG President’s Notes

Letaza Dutton JWE PTAG 2010-201 President [email protected]

“The purpose of life is not to be happy - but to matter, to be productive, to be useful, to have it make some difference that you have lived at all.”

Leo Rosten

Dear Jenks West Elementary Parents,

As I walked my 4th grader to her class on the first day of school, it caused me to remember that just a few short years ago I commented that compared to my Kindergartner the 4th graders looked so big. I thought it will be a long time before she will be that big. Guess what? She is now that big and the years passed way too quickly.

Whether you walked your child to their first day of school, their final first day of school or somewhere in between at Jenks West Elementary, it is my goal as the PTAG President, to help you find a spot where you can make a difference. I can’t make the time pass slower, but maybe I can help you make memories while you were here.

This year is shaping up to be very busy. The usual fun times such as Family Fun Bingo Night and the Jenks West Summer Fest are already scheduled for this year. In December, a Holiday Bazaar has been added. Sonic has agreed to hold Sonic Nights again during this school year. The Off Campus Fundraiser Chairman will be adding additional opportunities for you to help support the PTAG. Please check the PTAG Calendar for the dates of all the activities sponsored by the PTAG.

Excuse me for a moment while I step up on my soap box. The success of the JWE PTAG is only possible through the volunteer efforts of our members. Each project during the year requires many volunteers to make it a success.

Last school year the PTAG sold close to 800 school supplies packets with an additional benefit to the parents. The packets would be delivered to their child’s classroom. When it came time to deliver the packets to the teachers, there were only 4 parents who stepped up to help with this arduous task. Along with the help of their children, the packets were successfully delivered. Due to the limited amount of volunteers, it made it very difficult on the few who volunteered.

At the beginning of the school year the PTAG puts together the folders each of you received at Meet the Teacher Night. There were only 5-6 parents who helped with this project. The majority of which also helped deliver the school supplies. What I am trying to get out is the PTAG is in need of many parents who are willing to volunteer their time. The PTAG can not be successful if it is run on the backs of just a few.

Included in each newsletter will be a volunteer form for activities that are up coming for that and the following month. If you are willing and able to volunteer for one of the activities, complete the form and turn it into your child’s teacher or you can simply email me and I will get it to the proper chair person.

In closing I want to thank everyone who has helped and will be helping through out the year. If I ever forget to thank you in person please believe it isn’t intentional.

Sincerely yours,

P A G E 3 I S S U E I
