IdrovehomefromIan’swithmyheadspinning.Iwasgrowingsotiredofbeing

pulledinsomanydifferentdirections.Mybestfriendisdead.ImetaguywhoIreally,reallylike…andIjustcan’tseemtomakeitworkwithhim.Ian’snotabadguy.He’sjusttheoppositeasamatteroffact.He’skindofanenigma.Hespendsalotoftimealone,yethe’sperfectlycomfortablearoundpeople.Herebelledalotwhenhewasakid…yethehasagreat

relationshipwithhisparents.He’sananimalintheoctagon.Yethe’ssweetandgentleinbed.Hesayshewantsnothingtodowithhisex-girlfriendandyetshekeepspoppingupinourlives.SinceI’dstartedseeinghimhe’sprovokedsomanydifferentemotionsinsideofme,morethananyoneelseeverhad.I’msureithasalottodowiththewaywecame

WakingupisnolongerapleasureandsometimesIwonderedifiteverwouldbeagain.Thereisone,grandfleetingmomentwhenI’mwholeandeverythingisokay.Thenthememoriesofthe

pastmonthbegintoseepin…alwaysbeginningwiththefactthatEmmaisdead.Mylidsdon’tcasuallyflutteropenanylonger.Theysnapopenandlookaroundtheroom,searchingfor…something.Mybrainbecomesalmostimmediatelyoverwhelmedagainasifitwereallnew,freshandraw.Iwanttolingerintheblissfulignoranceofwakingup,but

sinceIknowIwon’tbeabletodothat,atnightI’vebeguntofightsleeplikeatoddler…Iwassotired,allthetime.

AfterIremindedmyself,andnotkindly,thatmybestfriendwasdead,IthoughtaboutIan.Imissedhimalready.Iwantedtoseehim.Iwantedtotalktohim.Iwantedtotouchhim.IknewthatwasabadideauntilIhad

somethingsfiguredout,sothenIwasreallytemptedtojustpullthecoversovermyheadandstaywhereIwas.UnfortunatelyI’dtriedthatalreadyandknewthatwasn’tthesolutioneither.Mybrainjustwouldn’tshutdown.Iforcedmyselfupandgotintotheshower.

Istoodunderneaththewaterandbreathedinthesteam,

urgingmymindtofadeintothatnothingnesswhereeverythingrealbecomesafoggyillusion.Istoodthereandfeltthewarmthcascadedownandover,andtriedtoimagineallofthestresswashingdownthedrain.Istayedunderneaththesprayuntiltheroomwasfullofsteamandthehotwaterwasbeginningtoturnlukewarmbeforefinallyturningitoff

andsteppingout.Ithadn’tworked.Thestresswasstillclingingtome.Ipickedupthetowelandwipedthesteamoffofthemirror.IlookedatmyfaceandthoughtagainaboutEmma.Iwondered,notforthefirsttime,howapersonwhowassodearlylovedcoulddisappearfromtheearthyetlifecouldjustgoon.Westillateandshoweredanddressed

andslept…andsomanyotherthings,whileEmmadidn’tdoanyofthatanylonger.IwonderedsometimesifthetableshadbeenturnedandI’dbeentheonetodieinsteadofEmma,ifshewouldhavedoneabetterjoboffiguringthisalloutthanIseemtobedoing.

AfterIwasdressedandhadmyhairandmakeupdone,I

feltalittlebetter.Iwentoutofmyroomandfounddadsittingatthediningroomtable,havinghiscoffee.

“Morningprincess.Howdidyousleep?”

IstartedbrowsingandsomethingaboutthesmellfromthefragrancecounterremindedmeofEmma.Emmalovedtoshop.She

lovedthemall.Sheusedtosaythatthesmellofit“empowered”her.Shelovedtheattentionwewouldgetinastorelikethisandshewouldtoucheverydressorblouseorpairofpantsthatsheliked,justtofeelthetextureofit.She’dtryoneverything,whetherornotsheneededit,orcouldaffordit.Shewouldgetafreemakeoverandwenevergot
