3 Great Ways to Spend a Spring Day in Burlington County

By Crystal Rodgers

Check out Palmyra Cove We found out about this gem a couple of years ago, located right near the Tacony Palmyra Bridge. The Palmyra Cove is a fun place to spend a spring afternoon and has something for everyone. There are nature trails to explore, an environmental center with many kid friendly activities, and our favorite part a bridge that rises up for the boats to come through. You could easily spend a great spring morning or afternoon there and not hear those famous words "Mom I'm Bored!" The best part is Palmyra Cove is free to visit.

Learn about the history of the blueberry and cranberry harvesting at Whitesbog Village Who doesn't love to learn? Whitesbog Village in Pemberton offers families a fun way to explore and learn about one of Burlington County's most famous families, the White family. While learning the history of this family your family will get to walk and explore the village trails learning about how cranberry harvesting happened in the bogs, walk the nature trails showing different trees and birds that are well known in the pinelands. You can even borrow binoculars from the village general store to go bird watching. Certain times of the year the village offers special events and tours where you can explore the village buildings and learn even more about this bog history. Their most well known tour is the living history tour which costs $15 per person, on this tour you experience what life was like on the bogs in the 1920's while touring the museums on the grounds and talking to historical interpreters.

Pick veggies, Go on a hayride, or Visit the animals at Johnson's Corner Farm When visiting Burlington County a visit to Johnson's Corner Farm in Medford is always recommended. They host many special events throughout the spring where you can get free admission to their Discovery Barnyard and animal farm, free hayrides and half price tickets that can be used through the season. They have many fun play structures in the Discovery Barnyard including a teepee, pedal carts, and a few pretend play houses. We love to slide down the slides there and visit the sheep and pigs. There are cruise nights on Friday nights in May that will showcase classic cars and have free hayrides to the pick your own fields along with half price discovery barnyard admission (normal admission is $7.50 per child up to age 12 and $3.75 for adults and children 13 and older) There are children's garden planting classes and hayride farm tours for a fee. Take a trip to the Camden Children's Garden The Children's Garden is beautiful all through-out the year but for spring it is even more beautiful. With the flowers growing all around, a butterfly garden in the greenhouse, and carousel it’s a perfect way to spend a spring day. Check out our review of The Camden Children's Garden.

Garden State Discovery Museum Did you know there is a small outdoor garden at the Garden State Discovery Museum? It's a butterfly garden. It includes "The Land of Sand" where your children can dig. There is a tea house that your children can go into and sit on some mushroom chairs. During the spring, the Garden will be growing an edible garden with fruits and vegetables for the grand opening of the garden in June. Your child can play through the tires and there are chairs and benches to enjoy your lunch outside in the nice weather. Don't forget to check out our reviews about the Garden State Discovery Museum.

3 Great Ways to Spend a Spring Day in Cape May County

By Julia Hunter

Cape May County Park and Zoo When spring arrives one of the first things I like to do is spend a day at the Cape May County Park and Zoo. The Cape May County Park and Zoo is a non-profit. Admission is free. The Zoo collects donations at the entrance. Within the park is the zoo, picnic areas, two playgrounds, fishing ponds and more. Pack a lunch and eat on the picnic benches throughout the park. Start your day by exploring the zoo. Make sure you don't miss the safari trail for a chance to see giraffes and zebras. There are two places in the park to feed animals; a quarter will buy enough food to keep the ducks’ or llamas’ bellies happy. After a break for lunch spend some time playing on one of the zoo's two playgrounds. The main playground is great for bigger kids and tends to get crowded; the second smaller playground is perfect for little ones. Next take a ride on the carousel and the train, which are open on weekends in the spring and fall and daily during the summer.

Bike Ride on the Ocean City Boardwalk Before the crowds of summer hit, the spring is a perfect time to ride your bike on the Ocean City Boardwalk. Many of the restaurants and shops along the boardwalk are open daily or on weekends in the spring. Plan to ride up an appetite and treat yourself to a boardwalk treat. The Ocean City Boardwalk is filled with tasty treats that you can't find everywhere like funnel cake and monkey bread. A personal favorite of mine is Ove's Restaurant on 4th and boardwalk for their apple cider donuts and T & M's Monkey Bread at 972 Boardwalk. After your treat, stop in Jilly's Arcade at 1168 Boardwalk. Jilly's is a local’s favorite and has a nice mix of classic and new video games.

Washington Street Mall in Cape May Cape May is another great place that you can explore on bike or on foot. The mall stretches for 3 blocks and is located near the beach and close to Congress Hall. Start your day by stopping by the visitor center for a map, they can also provide information about walking tours. The visitor center is located near the Cape May Bell and Winterwood Christmas shop. From there you will be able to see the Mary Star of the Sea Church, which makes for a great photo opportunity. As you make your way down Washington Street, get a free sample of fudge from the fudge kitchen. Washington Street has many unique shops including toy stores and children's boutiques. For lunch stop in Stewart's Root beer, which is in a location that used to be a bank and has been restored with a soda bar and seating in the former bank vault. End your day with a stroll through Congress Hall and a stop at Fralinger's for some salt water taffy!

Another area to explore this spring is the Bayshore Center at Bivalve and Delaware Bay Museum to learn about the history of the area. Bivalve, Commercial Township, serves as the home port for Schooner A.J. Meerwald, New Jersey's official Tall Ship, a restored oyster dredging schooner. 3 Great Ways to Spend a Spring Day in Essex County

By Monica

Essex County Environmental Center (ECEC) in Roseland The Essex Environmental Center was created to increase a greater awareness of the environment with Essex County residents. Originally established in the early 1970's it was closed due to poor funding but thankfully re-opened its doors in 2005. It is a part of the West Essex Park on wooded wetlands that border the Passaic River. With over 1,300 acres there is plenty to explore. They have partnered with various non-profit agencies that augment the diversity of their programs. In addition to trails, they host various workshops on photography, hiking, and gardening to name a few. They have workshops for the very young to the not-so-young (but young at heart).

Presby Memorial Iris Gardens/May in Montclair It is difficult to select one item that stands out about Montclair, however it is the location for one of the largest (if not the largest) collection of Iris flowers. Located at the base of Mountainside Park on Upper Mountain Avenue, is the Presby Memorial Iris Garden. The gardens contain over 14,000 flowers with over 3,000 varieties. That is a lot of flowers. The 2014 bloom season is anticipated to run from May 9-June 6. Donations are requested but not required. The Presby Memorial Iris Garden is part of a larger celebration that takes place called May in Montclair. Since 1979, this month long celebration has taken place every year. As you drive through the town of Montclair you will be greeted with thousands of tulips paid for by various individual donors. Film festivals, plant sales, walking tours, health festivals, to multiple concerts, and more. We will be adding events to our Essex County Calendar so make sure to check in with us.

Free Friday Flicks at Kip's Castle The often overlooked highlight of spring is the invitation to be active at night outside. Kip's Castle, located at 22 Crestmont Avenue, in Verona, opens its gates on Friday nights in June for free family oriented films. Families can begin to put their seats down at 7 PM on the lawn, but the featured film will begin at dusk. If it is raining, the next Saturday is an automatic rain date. The lineup for 2014 includes:

June 6: Rio June 13: Pitch Perfect

June 20: Teen Beach Movie June 27: Hunger Games: Catching Fire
