Would you say you’re happy with your life overall?

Despite the amount of grumbling and complaining we do, the average Maltese person certainly seems to be so. According to research carried out by the National Centre for Family Research, published in February, 75 per cent of all people in Malta, across all age brackets and genders are content with their lot in life. So what are all these people so thrilled about?

lOVE and maRRiagEPeople who were married were the happiest bracket surveyed,

no matter how old they were, whether they were male or female and whether they were married to another Maltese person or not. Most couples surveyed said that they placed a great deal of importance on respect, communication, trust, love and understanding, as well as the support that a partner offers whenever life throws an unexpected obstacle in the way. “I like the stability that marriage brings. No matter what kind of day I’ve had, my wife is always there at the end of it all with love and support,” says Martin, 35, married for five years. “My husband is my best friend. It's nice to have someone to talk to whenever you need to talk, and someone to fall back on

whenever things get tough,” agrees Amy, 32, married for three years. “You don’t have to face everything alone.” Couples who were otherwise happy in their relationship said that their biggest problems usually stemmed from a lack of time to spend with their partner, lack of communication and problems related to their income. “My husband and I both lead busy and hectic lives with different schedules so sometimes we have to make an extra effort to spend quality time together,” says Helen, 47, married for 19 years. “But it’s incredibly important – at the end of the day, it’s what helps keep the marriage alive.”

RaiSing ChildREnChildren are a blessing at any age, but the happiest Maltese parents were found to be those who are raising children under the age of nine or those whose children were over the age of 20. “Becoming parents completely re-organised our priorities,” say Ediana, 30, and Gilbert, 36, parents of two young boys. “With two children under two years of age, we are constantly aware that we have two dependents who will be affected with every decision or choice that we make for ourselves or the family, so we think far further ahead than we used to and we have far less time for ourselves. However, their smiles when they see us after we’ve been away for a

few hours, and the joy on their faces when we spend quality time together as a family make it all worthwhile,” Ediana shares. “It makes me happy to know someone else will do the dishes in 15 years' time,” Gilbert adds with a smile. “When your children come of age and gain independence, your role in their lives will change. However, there still have to be clear and open lines of communication,” says Maria Pia, 55, who has two adult sons in their 20s. “You should cherish the time you spend with them when they are growing up, whether you’re a working or stay-at-home parent – it’s a time which passes all too quickly,” she advises.

all ThE SinglE ladiESThe good news revealed by the survey was not just for those who are happily coupled up. Nearly half of those not in a relationship reported that they were very happy being single; single women of all ages in particular were amongst the most satisfied respondents to the survey. More than two-thirds of the single people who responded to the survey said that they were simply not interested in being in a relationship – it was by far the most common reason given. Other reasons for flying solo included not having met the right person, being afraid of relationships, a lack of opportunities to meet potential partners, and single parents who had yet to meet someone who got along well with their children. “When you’re single, you can go ahead and make decisions on your own, whereas when you’re in a relationship, choices are made by two people. It can be a difficult act to juggle if your priorities aren’t the same,” says Rebecca, 25. “You have a lot more independence when you’re single because you don’t have to rely on anyone to go out and do something – you just

do it. Plus, there’s no fighting and you get to treat yourself whenever you want!”

hOW TO BE haPPYThis all begs the question – what is happiness and how do we get there? “Happiness is usually defined as a mental or emotional state of well-being defined by positive or pleasant emotions,” says psychotherapist Claire Borg. “However, my happiness might be different to your happiness because of

our different perspectives and expectations in life. In fact we often speak about subjective well-being which is basically how people evaluate their own quality of life.”

“If we value ourselves and others by showing appreciation, reflect on things which were done well during the day, and get involved in groups, events and activities, we can achieve happiness on a day-to-day basis. Volunteering

is a great opportunity for people of any age who would like to make a difference and get a sense of fulfilment. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and exercising also helps – a good workout relieves stress and releases chemicals called endorphins, which trigger a positive feeling in the body and reduce our perception of pain.”

“Happiness doesn’t always come easy and it is very important to ask for help and

share the way you’re feeling with your loved ones, especially in difficult moments. Talking to friends and family can help us give new meanings to certain experiences, and learn healthy ways of coping with the struggles which we often face in life. However, if you are going through difficult emotional states such as anxiety, stress, sadness, anger, guilt, shame or frustration, it might be worth seeking professional help to find relief and release from your suffering. Therapy can provide you with the help you need to achieve peace and contentment on your own terms. After all, happiness is about the journey, not the destination, and the doing is often more important than the outcome.” BB

For the first time in Malta, Teatru Manoel is presenting a new production of Orphée et Eurydice (1859 Berlioz revision) as part of the BOV Performing Arts Festival.

Considered as the finest of composer Christoph Willibald Gluck’s operas, Orphée et Eurydice is based on the myth of Orpheus and set to a libretto by Jean Louis Molineit. Directed by Denise Mulholland, it features mezzo-sopranos Hadar Halevy and Lucia Cirillo sharing the male role of Orphée, Maltese soprano Gillian Zammit playing Eurydice and Francesca Aquilina playing Amour. The chorus is made up of predominantly Maltese singers. The Malta Philharmonic Orchestra will be conducted by Philip Walsh. The production also features

ŻfinMalta Dance Ensemble with choreography by Mavin Khoo.

This new production will be re-imagined in the Victorian era and promises to be both moving and visually striking with a set designed by Pierre Portelli and costumes by Luke Azzopardi. The opera will be sung in French with English subtitles. Ticket holders can attend a pre-opera talk at 7.15pm.

gypsum has been in use far longer than we can imagine – think ancient

civilizations, including the Egyptians who used gypsum mortar to fill gaps between stones when constructing the pyramids. Ever since then, gypsum has been used extensively as a construction material, and became all the more popular thanks to its ability to create a comfortable and aesthetic ambience, and to deliver an effortlessly smooth, white surface free of scars and cracks.

Also referred to as wallboard or plasterboard, gypsum board is widely used to construct strong, high-quality walls and ceilings that are stable and durable, and that can easily be decorated or refinished. Loraine D’Ambrogio

of D Gypsum and Lights says one of the best features of gypsum is its versatility, as it can be used to construct almost anything in any room.

“It offers significant advantages over other building materials as it can be combined with insulation and soundproofing material. It can be used on both straight and curved walls,

can be bent, exposed to fire and water, and can be used for external purposes too,” says Loraine. “Gypsum can be used to create ceilings, partitions, units, features and anything one can imagine, as it is custom-made to suit every client’s needs. Today, different types of boards exist for each and every requirement, and as a result, it is clearly the construction material of choice for both residential and commercial demands.”

When considering gypsum for the home or any other project, Loraine says that the placement of gypsum should be planned in conjunction with the lighting in the space. “Gypsum is enhanced by light, and light spreads more evenly across a gypsum ceiling. Gypsum fittings, or ‘trimless’ as they are known, are downlights

consisting solely of gypsum, therefore the bond between the luminaire and ceiling is seamless and clean. This allows for an invisible interface between the fitting and ceiling surface so the end result looks as though the shapes have been cast into the ceiling rather than added to the ceiling. These downlights have been designed to accommodate the new generation of LEDs and come in different shapes and sizes. They can be used as a primary light, secondary light or even as effect lighting.”

While some materials are best reserved for some parts of the home and better avoided for others – parquet in the bathroom is generally avoided, for instance, due to moisture and humidity – gypsum can be used almost anywhere, although the type does

vary depending on the use. “Gypsum can be used in all parts of the home including the exterior,” says Loraine, “but of course there are different gypsum boards for different room requirements. For example, it is strongly recommended to use hydro boards in a bathroom, as this room exposes the boards to water and humidity. On the other hand, fire resistant boards for a gypsum unit intended to house a fireplace are the most appropriate, due to the level of heat they will be exposed to.” BB

Zebbug, Siggiewi, Qrendi and Mosta, the thick walls of these old homes seem to shut off the outside world, so it’s really no wonder that they’ve grown in popularity in recent years.

Brimming with charm and personality, a house of character generally comprises an entrance hall which overlooks an internal, central courtyard. Within the traditional set-up, the courtyard is very much the centre of the home, with the living quarters and kitchen, as well as additional rooms and bedrooms upstairs built

Nowadays, houses of character and farmhouses that date back hundreds of years are being converted and upgraded to include all of today’s comforts, including solar heating and air-conditioning, and the courtyard, which lies at the centre of it all, has not been overlooked.

“The courtyard has long been a feature of traditional Maltese houses,” Ing. Patrick Spiteri Staines, Managing Director at T4B Services affirms, maintaining that when renovating the space to make it amenable for modern living, a number of considerations must be made. He posits the questions, ‘What will its final use be?’ and ‘Is it going to be kept as an external area, or is it going to become an internal area?’, explaining that if the courtyard is to be kept as an external space, one needs to think

about water-proofing and protection from the elements.

“It needs to be seen whether the courtyard will be left with exposed stone or whether it will be plastered. In both cases, BUFFA have products that allow protection of the wall while allowing it to breathe. Products based on siloxanes and lime are very important for this, and there are a number of different solutions with different aesthetic effects combining textures and colours,” he says. Meanwhile, for internal use, there isn’t need for water-proofing, but it’s still important to allow the walls to breathe and treat any problems of dampness and salts.

Asked about the most popular finishes when it comes to courtyard renovations, Ing. Spiteri Staines asserts that while there are a number of finishes that are very popular, the top

two include the BUFFA Calcite Marmo, which is a smooth coloured finish based on lime which can be used internally and externally, and the BUFFA Risanavita ai Silicati, a silicate-based coating that gives texture as well as colour and has a more contemporary feel.

As for advice to home owners who are planning to restore a courtyard within an old house, the engineer points out that it is imperative to consider problems of rising damp, dusting stone, salts and severe stone deterioration. “The solutions must be breathable and should not block the passage of water vapour that needs to exit the stone in some way,” he explains. “BUFFA has the Calcite range of products that solve many of these problems. One should avoid using gypsum products on humid walls as the end result will be disastrous, with the gypsum deteriorating very fast. One should also avoid using products such as oils and sealers that seal the stone and prevent the egress of water vapour. Instead, one should consider products such as the BUFFA Peg 600 siloxane-based transparent waterproofing for exposed stone and BUFFA

And once the restoration work has been done, it’s time to dress it up. Your choice of outdoor furniture, as well as any décor, canopies and soft furnishings should be chosen in keeping with the style of your interiors, so as to create a seamless transition between outdoors and in. Colour trends for outdoor furniture include a modern, monochromatic palette featuring a contemporary grey and white colour scheme, or, for a touch of fun, colourful accents with pops of vibrant colour like tangerine and fuchsia, paired with modern prints like ikat or stripes. Natural materials and textures are also favoured for outdoor areas like courtyards, including wicker and rattan, metal, wood, stone and concrete.

When it comes to dressing it up, your courtyard should be treated as an extension of your living quarters. If your house has a modern aesthetic, minimalist furniture and simple lighting should do the trick, but if you favour a more eclectic feel, your courtyard should reflect that, with colourful

pillows and lanterns creating the perfect chill-out zone. Other fun additions you may want to consider depending on the size of your space include an outdoor sofa, swing or hammock on which to relax

and unwind, a larger outdoor dining table to accommodate more guests, and a fire pit or outdoor heater to make the space useable throughout the winter months. BB

Over the past 20 years, wooden and aluminium frame windows in Europe and

When Sarah Cachia’s 15-year-old son Jacob was

diagnosed with a serious illness three years ago, the family was distraught. However it wasn’t just the endless treatments, pain and fear that traumatised Jacob, but the fact that he was sadly separated from his beloved Yorkshire Terrier, Peanut, who Jacob and his sister Chloe refer to as ‘their brother from another mother’.

“Jacob survived three brain surgeries, two brain haemorrhages, a brain infection and he fought for his life in the ITU,” Sarah says. “Throughout all that, though, the thing that upset him most was the fact he couldn’t see our family dog. We all adore Peanut and it was heart-breaking for me to see Jacob separated from him in this way. He was fighting for his life and the thought that he might die without seeing his dog was hell. I desperately wanted his wish to be granted.”

Eventually Sarah says she persuaded the medical team

to let her take Peanut to the hospital entrance, so that Jacob could be brought out to see him. “We put a blanket on Jacob and propped him up with pillows because he was so frail and couldn’t sit up on his own. Peanut didn't even recognise Jacob until he spoke up – that’s how bad he was. But seeing the two of them reunited was like a ray of sunshine on a rainy day. We all started sobbing, but they were happy tears. From then on, I started questioning why there wasn’t a safe, comfortable place for people to go to see their pets when they are ill.”

The idea of the Reunited Pet Cabin came to Sarah two years later when in better days, she saw the photo of the day when Jacob was reunited with Peanut. It reminded her of the happiness the family had felt on that cold winter’s day, and she wondered why wasn't there a place to go for patients to spend time with their pets – after all, pet therapy has been proven to be highly beneficial for people in recovery. Through her support group, Survivors Malta, Sarah decided to collaborate with the Junior

Chamber International Malta (JCI Malta), a non-profitable organisation consisting of young active citizens, and local crowd-funding platform zaar.com.mt to raise enough money to build a conservatory space at Mater Dei where patients could see their pets.

“We found crowd-funding to be a great way of getting our message across and sharing information with our supporters. It’s like an online piggy bank that helps you collect much-needed money, while also inspiring people and getting further encouragement on our own journey.” After the Pet Cabin page went live on zaar.com.mt, pledges for donations poured in, and the full amount of funding is expected to be reached within the next few weeks.

“The feedback has been incredible, both from survivors in my support group and from the general public. As soon as it’s been fully funded, we can stop focusing on the money and start thinking about the families who will be using it. The project is now well and truly on its way and I am so

excited. Once everything is up and running, it will be the perfect serene meeting place where patients can meet with their family dogs, and it will also house other pet-related activities such as pet therapy for the patients. And, honestly, I’m not doing this for glory but for the hundreds of families who are experiencing the same difficulties that we went through. I just want to give them a piece of happiness,” Sarah adds, smiling. “I remember how, when Peanut saw me after a long while, he was so happy he just couldn’t handle it. Yet he sensed our pain and, every time he saw me crying, he’d climb on my lap and lick me. Stroking him also made me feel so much better – he gives the kind of unconditional love only an animal can give. And that’s what we hope the Reunited Pet Cabin will bring to patients.” “I’ve been overwhelmed by the public’s kindness, as well as by the authorities’ understanding. People have been so willing to lend a helping hand. They’ve seen our vision and they want to help us succeed. Before I said that I stand to

The elaborate religious spectacles surrounding Holy Week and Easter in Malta require a

serious amount of preparation, dedication and man power. Most localities across the islands set about organising their own processions, religious plays, pilgrimages and more, and households are busy preparing an array of Lenten and Easter delicacies, ahead of the finale that is Easter Sunday. Here’s how some of these customs began.

hiSTORY and TRadiTiOnSince the earliest days of Christianity, the passion, death and resurrection of Christ have been observed as the most solemn occasions of the year,

albeit the most extravagant, although Holy Week and Good Friday processions began much later locally. It is believed that Good Friday processions started around the time of the Battle of Lepanto in 1571 when Pope Pius V, together with scores of faithful followers, recited the rosary from dawn to dusk while Christians and Muslims engaged in battle in the Mediterranean. The battle ended in defeat for the Turks and victory for the Christians, and shed light on the value of the rosary, which forms a central part of processions on this day.

Good Friday processions, accompanied by statues depicting the sorrowful mysteries, started in Malta as early as the 18th century,

and have remained largely the same so many years later. Mourning begins on Maundy Thursday which commemorates The Last Supper – you’ll find a number of exhibitions and representations in miniature model form depicting this event, similar to the Christmas crib in several towns and villages. A popular procession is the one held at Girgenti, which starts from the village square of Siggiewi and ends at is-Salib tal-Gholja in torchlight. On this day, lots of church-goers do the seven visits – a ‘tour’ of seven churches and chapels for prayer and reflection – which can also be extended until noon on Good Friday.

As tradition has it, no church bells are rung on Good Friday

and no mass is celebrated, making it the most solemn day of the year. However, lots of Maltese and Gozitan towns and villages stage biblical re-enactments and elaborate pageants in full costume. You’ll see people dressed as Roman soldiers, Jewish priests, disciples and country folk, as well as hooded penitents carrying crosses and sometimes chains around their ankles. It’s a spectacle which draws large crowds made up of both locals and tourists.

In the absence of church bells ringing, listen out for the sound of the cuqlajta, a traditional instrument typically located up in the bell tower of local churches, and usually played by a handful of volunteers willing to climb several flights

of stairs to perform this duty. The cuqlajta is a cross-shaped clapper with hammers and traditionally turned manually with a metal handle, although a number of villages are now introducing electrical means to operate this heavy-duty instrument.

CUlTURE and CUiSinETry as we might to abstain from tempting foods, 40 days is too long a time to keep away from all-things sweet, which is why kwarezimal – the name of which is derived from ‘quaresima’, meaning the 40 days of Lent – came to be. It contains no added fat or eggs and is made of almonds, flour, honey, cinnamon, nutmeg, orange blossom water, lemon and orange rind. After baking,

the small cakes, which are long, flat and wide in shape, are smothered in a layer of local honey and sprinkled with extra almonds or pistachios for decoration.

One of the few other sweets permitted during Lent, especially when fasting was adhered to more rigorously, are karamelli tal-harrub, typically sold in village squares during Holy Week, especially on Maundy Thursday when churches are much more populated and on Good Friday after processions. Small, solid and very sweet, these squares of carob syrup are the syrupiest indulgence you’ll get while fasting, ahead of the influx of food that Easter brings with it.

Of course, the sweet which takes the cake is the figolla, which is not to be savoured before Easter Sunday. Back in the day, children used to take their figolla with them to the parish procession to have it blessed before cutting it. The aroma of baked pastry shapes filled with ground almonds and covered in icing or molten chocolate fill the kitchens of many Maltese homes during this time, typically using a recipe that has been handed down for generations. The ultimate test of willpower while preparing these sweets during Holy Week is whether you can resist nibbling on a crumb of pastry or licking a spatula of chocolate – but it is certainly well worth the wait. 17-26 MArChholy Week exhibition at st helen Band Club – St Helen Band Club will be holding its annual Holy Week sacred exhibition from 17th to 26th March, which will include life-size scenes related to Holy Week, a variety of hand-prepared displays made of semolina and rice, as well as statuettes showing Good Friday processions and various other sacred exhibits. Venue: St Helen Band Club, Birkirkara.

25 MArChGood Friday – Late afternoon on Good Friday, some 17 different towns and villages – including Zebbug, Rabat and Mosta, Malta and Ghajnsielem and Nadur, Gozo – commemorate the Passion of the Christ by an organised and solemn procession of statues, each one representing a particular episode in the Passion of the Christ and carried by pallbearers.

27 MArCheaster sunday – Join in the festive mood of Easter Sunday and witness the statue of the Risen Christ being carried through the streets of numerous towns and villages across the islands. The most notable spectacle occurs in Birgu, when a group of men make a mad dash up the church’s stairs carrying the statue of Kristu Rxoxt.

MeThODWash and clean the mussels and prawns, then chop the onion, parsley and cherry tomatoes.

In a large frying pan, add the butter, onions and garlic, and sauté for about five minutes on medium heat. Add the tomatoes and wine and leave to simmer for five minutes.

Add the prawns and mussels and cook for seven minutes. Add some salt, pepper and fresh basil.

Boil the pasta for eight minutes, drain it and mix it in the frying pan with the rest of the ingredients. Serve with a drizzle of olive oil.

For the sauce In a saucepan, add the butter, the flour and the onion, and sauté for a few minutes. Pour in the chardonnay wine and reduce for about five minutes on medium heat. Add the cream, salt and pepper, fresh parsley and chopped tarragon, and simmer for a further five minutes.For the chicken In a medium-sized bowl mix the crab meat with the cream, lemon juice, chopped garlic, salt, pepper and parsley. Let it rest for 20 minutes.Cut the chicken breast in half and open into a butterfly. Spread the crab meat mixture in the centre and spread it evenly over the breast. Roll the chicken breast closed, and place it in a heated frying pan, browning both sides until sealed.Wrap the chicken breast in foil and cook it in the oven on gas mark 6. After 20 to 25 minutes, remove it from the oven, take off the foil, cut it in half and serve with the chardonnay wine sauce.

mEThOd For chocolate brownie Put walnuts, hemp seeds, unsweetened cocoa powder, dates, vanilla extract and sea salt into food processor and pulse until the mixture is combined.For peppermint cream Pulse the cashews, cacao butter, coconut nectar and lemon juice in a food processor until creamy. Season to taste using matcha powder and peppermint oil until the mixture is sufficiently green and minty. For coconut cream Put the chilled cream and vanilla bean into a medium bowl and whisk with a hand mixer until whipped. Transfer to a piping bag to plate.To serve Line a half-sheet pan with parchment paper. Press ¼ cup of the brownie mix to the bottom of a mould of your choice. pretty soon, is looking to make the driver all but redundant. Here are just a few of the interesting features and tech developments that are currently available, or are soon to be available, in modern cars.

Rain SEnSORActivated by rainfall, a rain sensor is an interesting accessory that has two main applications. The first has to do with water conservation – with the device being connected to an automatic irrigation system that shuts down as it senses rain. The second application turns on automatic windscreen wipers, eliminating the need for the driver to switch them on as rain begins to fall.

BlUETOOTh COnnECTiViTYBluetooth isn’t new and Bluetooth connectivity is a feature that has been available within premium cars

for some time. However, thanks to a number of technological advancements, it has become faster, more widespread, more reliable and capable of interfacing with several different kinds of devices, allowing you to do a lot without ever taking your hands off the steering wheel, including streaming music, sending messages and exchanging files.

PaRking SEnSORSDesigned to alert the driver to obstacles in close proximity while parking, parking sensors make use of either electromagnetic or ultrasonic sensors. The majority of these systems work using ultrasonic detectors which measure the distances between your car and other cars or objects, via sensors located within the front and/or rear bumpers. They emit acoustic tones while calculating distance, with the pulses getting faster as the car gets nearer to an obstacle.

SElf-PaRking CaRSA car that parks itself can make the whole parking-in-a-tight-space-

on-a-busy-street situation a lot less stressful. The self-parking car can fit into smaller spaces than most drivers can manage on their own, making it easier to find parking, and simultaneously helping the problematic parking situation many areas face by allowing the same number of cars to take up fewer spots. Within a self-parking car, all the driver has to do is regulate speed while the on-board computer system does the rest. Once in position beside the front car, the self-parking car gives the driver a signal to stop. The driver shifts into reverse and allows the car to move into the parking space, with the power steering system manoeuvring the car. Another signal tells the driver to stop and shift into drive. The car then pulls forward and adjusts.

SElf-dRiVing CaRSAnd what about cars that need no humans at all? Self-driving cars are no longer a futuristic idea – so much so that a report by the Business Insider predicts that 10 million self-driving cars will be on the road by 2020. Leading car companies like Mercedes, BMW and Tesla have either already released or are soon to release self-driving features, with Tesla recently announcing that it is developing plans to enable cars to drive long distances without any humans at all, self-charging at superchargers and producing intelligent destinations based on calendar data. Meanwhile, tech companies are also getting in on the action, with Google having road-tested their fleet of prototype vehicles over 1,948,394km as of last September, with a view towards making them available to the public in 2020.
