BERLIN WALL: WEST BERLIN GHETTO?? by Ayaka Nishimura Yesterday, the wall built at the border between East and West Berlin by the East Germans was completed. West Berlin is now surrounded by the wall which is made of concrete blocks, four meters high and 111 kilometers long. Three days ago the border between the Soviet and western sections was suddenly closed with barbed wire by Soviet and East Germans. People from West Berlin objected to Soviet and East Germans, yet they did not attempt to break the border. After three days, the barbed wire was begun to be replaced with a wall of concrete blocks (Brooman). According to the “The West Berlin Ghetto” (“German Unification” ) West Berlin government, the wall was built because of economic and political problem reasons. For economy, DDR lost money because a lot of skilled workers and well-educated people from East Germany moved to West Berlin which made a brain drain, and many worked here in West Berlin but lived in East Berlin (it’s cheaper there). During the past ten years, Berlin has been a spy center for West to spy on the communist countries. With no wall, spies could cross easily to East Berlin. “In 1960 there were about 80 spy centers and similar organizations working against the Eastern block. This kind of spy war is sometimes called "The Silence War"” (Mauer). Making Berlin Wall (Mauer) After the end of World War II, the rest parts of Nazi Germany, west of the Oder-Neisse line, were divided into four zones. The Allied powers including Americans, Soviets, French and the British taken those divided areas. Even though the city was suited in the inland of the Soviet area, the capital of Germany was also divided into four sections. However, the American, British and French areas united their areas together, to form the Federal Republic of Germany and West Berlin in 1949, when the Cold War took place. The Soviet area formed German Democratic Republic (included East Berlin). The Berlin Wall means two Germanys and two Berlins are now two countries. What does the Berlin Wall mean for future of two Germanys? The Wall does not speak. EDITORIAL Berlin Wall Unjustified The building of the Berlin Wall is not justified! The East Germans should break this Berlin Wall as soon as they can. Soviets and East Germans one- sidedly built the Berlin Wall which was done without any notice beforehand: it is a shocking thing for West Berliners. East Germany did such an absurd thing because East Germany faces a crisis by a lot of East German’s taking refuge in West Germany. Even though East Germans have a purpose to prevent East Germans from escaping to West Germany, it is still a crafty and unreasonable thing to do. (“Cartoon Stock”) Building of the Berlin Wall is not justified if we think about people’s lives. The living standard of West Germany is much better than East Germany. West Germany has better economy because they have a democratic government supported by the U.S., Great Britain and France. Berlin Wall Unjustified

The building of the Berlin Wall is not justified! The East Germans should break this Berlin Wall as soon as they can. Soviets and East Germans one-sidedly built the Berlin Wall which was done without any notice beforehand: it is a shocking thing for West Berliners. East Germany did such an absurd thing because East Germany faces a crisis by a lot of East German’s taking refuge in West Germany. Even though East Germans have a purpose to prevent East Germans from escaping to West Germany, it is still a crafty and unreasonable thing to do.

Germany must make changes in their government and economy so East Germans will not want to escape. The wall proves to all Berliners that East is not well. A wall is not the answer. We are all Berliners! We must solve problems together. The wall stops dialogue! The wall will not solve anything. Did we not learn anything from WWII?
