In 1966, ElizabEth RaftERy publishEd a littlE book entitled Berkeley’s Three Founders. Miss Raftery served BDS for many years, first as secretary to the dean, later as registrar, and then as historian. She was asked by Dean Wilmer to give a Founders’ Day talk that ulti-

mately resulted in this short history. In it, she writes,

When one thinks of the founder or founders of a school or an institution, one pictures a person or group of persons who have pored over plans, gathered money from whatever sources they could find, and at last are pictured receiving a charter, turning over a piece of sod, or sealing a cornerstone, and the founding date is fixed forever.

But, as in many other ways Berkeley is unique, we have three founders in three places in three centuries. In the eighteenth century, Bishop Berkeley created in the new world a seminary which, true to his philosophical theories, existed only in his mind. In the nineteenth century Bishop Williams founded the School visibly in Middletown, Connecticut. And in the twentieth century Dean Ladd established it here in New Haven. … Common to all was the vision and venture of our motto, “in illa quae ultra sunt”—into those regions which are beyond.

In this, the fortieth year of our full affiliation with Yale Divinity School, I would like to propose in the spirit of Miss Raftery’s account, that it should be extended to include a fourth founder: Dean Michael Allen, whose vision it was to create this unique partnership.

Dean Allen came to BDS in 1970, when the trustees had already made a decision that the School should be “closed without incident,” or if possible, that the new dean

should find an alternative means for its continuation. Upon his arrival, Dean Allen faced an institution in turmoil. He set up the faculty and student body as a “participa-tory democracy,” the Berkeley Assembly, in which each person would have one vote. Providentially, Allen was an old friend of YDS’s new dean, Colin Williams, and the two of them began to explore the possibility of a closer affiliation between the two schools (BDS had already been in a loose affiliation with Yale since the time of its move to New Haven in 1928).

Dean Allen recalls that he and Dean Williams were concerned that YDS also had challenges of its own to face: the Association of Theological Schools, for instance, was alarmed about the relative lack of professional education. As the two deans first framed the new affiliation, BDS would continue as a seminary of the Episcopal Church and provide professional education for both schools; YDS would be responsible for the academic program.

Berkeley also explored possible relationships with other seminaries, but in the end the “Berkeley Assembly” chose YDS, mainly based on the votes of the students. “Thus,” wrote Dean Allen, “I fulfilled the mandate to close the school without inci-dent, and find a future for it that gave all of us the option of a new future.”

In retrospect, the decision to enter into a partnership with Yale was exception-ally forward looking. As time has evolved, Berkeley’s influence as a denominational seminary on the professional studies dimension of YDS has strengthened its cur-riculum, and helped to keep the Master of Divinity program focused and vital. Yale’s academic standards have, in turn, continued to keep the bar set high for Berkeley’s programs of formation and education for ministry.

The result is an enviable arrangement which is now widely regarded as a power-ful model for theological education in the twenty-first century. Not only do Berkeley students have access to the full resources of Yale University, but BDS’s programs in spiritual formation, leadership development, global engagement, religion and ecol-ogy, urban ministry, and educational ministry reinforce and deepen YDS’s curricular offerings. Moreover, in conjunction with YDS, Berkeley is able to choose its students from an array of fine applicants. The resulting selectivity creates a dynamic educa-tional environment for intellectual growth and spiritual formation. And working within the constraints imposed by being part of a university, BDS now maintains the fiscal discipline of balanced budgets and careful management of financial resources.

Miss Raftery finished her Founders’ Day address by praising the three Founders—Berkeley, Williams and Ladd—as “great men, different in personality but alike in cour-age, scholarship, vision, simplicity, and in love and service to God and Humanity. Each laid foundations which have been cherished, strengthened, and enlarged by successive deans …” Surely on this fortieth anniversary of a courageous and fruitful decision, Dean Michael Allen can be added as the fourth on the list of Berkeley’s Founders.

On Saturday, 21 May 2011 at 4:00 p.m., the graduating class of 2011, parents, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends gath-ered in Marquand Chapel to celebrate with a festive service

of Evensong, and the awarding of certificates, diplomas, and prizes. In addition to the Dean and staff of Berkeley Divinity School, also present were YDS Dean Harry Attridge, Head of Lutheran Stud-ies and Divinity Librarian, Paul Stuehrenberg, and BDS Graduate Society Secretary and Treasurer, Patricia Mitchell ’02.

After a stirring sermon delivered by Dean Britton, 26 students were awarded diplomas and certificates: 18 the Diploma in Angli-can Studies; 4 the Certificate in Anglican Studies; 2 the Diploma in Lutheran Studies; and 2 the Certificate in Educational Leader-ship and Ministry, marking the first class to complete the ELM program in school and college ministry.

In addition to the diplomas and certificates, eight prizes were awarded. The E. William Muehl Prize in Preaching, awarded to the most eloquent preacher in the graduating class was awarded to

Dane Boston. Dane is now serving at Christ Church, Greenwich, CT, and will be ordained to the transitional diaconate next year. The R. Lansing Hicks Prize for the graduating student who did the most to benefit the Berkeley community during his or her time in seminary was given to Susan Rainey Dankel. Rainey, ordained to the priesthood this past summer, is living in North Carolina where she serves as supply clergy. Blake Sawicky received the Thomas Philips Memorial Award for showing exceptional achievement and further promise in the study and practice of Anglican liturgy. Blake, ordained to the transitional diaconate in June, is serving as curate at St. John’s Cathedral in Denver. The St. Luke’s Award for outstanding contribution to the worship life of BDS was awarded to two seniors: Stephen Holton and C. Alexander Riffee. Both were ordained to the transitional diaconate over the summer; Alex is serving at St. James’ Church in Richmond, VA, and Stephen at Christ Church, New Haven, CT.

In addition to those four Berkeley prizes for graduating seniors,

one YDS prize was awarded by Dean Harry Attridge. The Bradford E. Ableson Prize for Ecclesiastical Leadership is awarded each year to the student who, in the judgment of the faculty, possesses the most outstand-ing qualities of judgment and character to the future exercise of church leadership (awarded with a preference for Anglican students). This year, that prize was awarded to senior Kevin Caruso. Kevin, ordained to the priesthood over the summer, is serving at St. Michael’s Church in Barrington, IL.

Two current students received prizes for academic achievement: rising senior Janine Schenone received the William Palmer Ladd Prize; and rising middler Emilie Finn was awarded the E. Lee McGee Prize. Also awarded during this service was the “Pal-estine of Jesus” Scholarship to graduating student Beth Tjoflat. The scholarship pro-vides for the student to travel to St. George’s College in Jerusalem to study the “Palestine of Jesus.” Beth was ordained to the priest-hood over the summer, and now serves the Parish of St. Francis in-the-Field in Ponte Vedra, FL.

Our graduates are now serving in parishes all over the country. In addi-tion to the parishes served by those stu-dents who received prizes, our graduates are also serving at St. John’s Cathedral in Los Angeles, St. Paul’s Church in Kinder-

hook, NY, Christ Church in Philadelphia, St. Paul’s in Salem Oregon, the Middlesex Church Cluster in CT, St. Mark’s Church and School in Brooklyn, All Saints’ Cathe-dral and School in the US Virgin Islands, and the Iglesia Catedral del Redentor, Madrid, Spain.

It seems that no sooner do we say good-bye to those leaving that we greet our new students. The incoming class of twenty-two is already making its mark, beginning their journey in illa quae ultra sunt.

Berkeley Summer Leadership Symposium Attracts Strong Interest

“Addressing the Deepest Needs of Adolescents” was the topic of Berkeley’s annual Summer Leadership Symposium last

June. Over 50 people—school chaplains and teachers and parish rec-tors and youth workers—enrolled in the two-day seminar at which Berkeley’s own Tony Jarvis gave three addresses: Where Teenag-ers Are Today, What Teenagers Need, and Ten Commandments for Adults Engaging Adolescents. Skip Masback (pastor of New Canaan Congregational Church—a parish renowned for its youth program) gave brief responses to the first two addresses. Teacher-author Patri-cia Lyons preached at Evensong and the Eucharist, and both she and Dr. Masback—along with school chaplain Adam Greene ’09—led break-out sessions for youth workers, chaplains, and teachers of religion. Included in the symposium were Evensong, cocktails and buffet supper at the Berkeley Center, the Eucharist, and a boxed lunch in the Sterling Divinity Quad. Those in attendance found the addresses stimulating and enjoyed meeting—and forming relation-ships with—those laboring in vineyards similar to their own.

Experiences in the FieldBerkeley students bring their summer stories back

I had the joy to serve this summer as Camp Director for the Barbara C. Har-ris Camp, operated by the Diocese of

Massachusetts. We had the privilege of serving Christ in nearly one thousand kids and families through our programs, provid-ing formation through creative approaches to worship and bible study, using a small-group model. They’re also a lot of fun! I’m extremely grateful for my phenom-enal staff, including YDS students, Krysta Baglien and Alex Marshall. Thanks also to Fr. Jarvis and the ELM program for better equipping me as a leader in this ministry. I can’t wait to return!

—Matt Lindeman ’12

This summer my fiancée Jenny Landis (also a Berkeley student) and I spent a month in Bondo,

a tiny village on Haiti’s southern pen-insula. Our project was to build a play-ground at St. Marie Madeleine Episcopal Church and School. Why, you might ask, did we choose that project when Haiti has so many urgent problems like starvation, disease and environmental catastrophe? The short answer is that our host, the Ven. Kesner Gracia, asked us to build it. Beyond that, we also saw this as a tangible way to share the love of Jesus Christ with the chil-dren of the poorest of the poor.

For the past year Fr. Kesner and I have been working together to build 38 new homes on the church property. Our plan has been to relocate a group of people from a tiny island called Bidaw who were liv-ing in horrifically squalid conditions. With the homes now completed we believed the playground could help integrate the people of Bidaw with the people of Bondo. After months of prayer and planning we built a simple playground with a swing set, see-saw, shade garden and picnic tables. The families now occupy the homes of New Bidaw, and their children are happily play-ing together with the children of Bondo.

The trip was transformative for both Jenny and me. We see the body of Christ—and the Episcopal Church—in a new way, transcending borders, languages, and cul-tures. We were privileged to preach and read scripture (in Creole) in Sunday worship. We brought with us many liturgical items donated by Connecticut churches, includ-ing altar linens from St. Thomas’s, New Haven, French Prayer Books and a thurible from St. John’s North Haven, incense from Christ Church New Haven and Creole Bibles from Christ Church Greenwich. The

trip would not have been possible without the help and support of Pam Wesley, Berke-ley’s Development Director, and generous donations from the Seminary Consultation on Mission (SCOM) and local parishes.

I spent this summer living, working, and praying with the Common Friars at Good Earth Farm, a monastic move-

ment emerging in the Episcopal Church. The Common Friars see an intimate rela-tionship between the Eucharist, the dinner table, and the food they raise sustainably to give to the hungry. As a founding member of the Episcopal Evangelism Network, I led formation for the friars on spiritual con-versations as evangelism and conducted a missional consultation for them to develop ministries to young adults. I want to thank the Evangelical Education Society of the Episcopal Church for their support of my work with the Common Friars.

Jesus prayed for unity among his follow-ers. What does that prayer mean when followers of Jesus are spread around

the world and in virtually every culture, lan-guage, and context? This summer, I pursued that question by visiting with Christians—primarily Anglicans—in China, Nigeria, South Sudan, and South Africa with no agenda but to listen and learn from them. On the mountainous and remote Nigerian-Cameroonian border, in the contested and conflict-ridden Abyei region in Sudan, and on the Mongolian steppe, I found Chris-tians interested in building a unity that preserves the distinctiveness of our local contexts. Most of all, I realized there’s an essential incarnational reality at the core of any effort to build unity. We cannot realize God’s gift of unity to the church unless we truly commit to our brothers and sisters in Christ around the world.

Dear Alumni and Friends of Berkeley,

I am delighted to report that—thanks to the generosity of our graduates and friends—we exceeded our Annual fund goal of $420,000 by raising $425,677. This is an especially commendable achievement for both indi-viduals and parishes in these difficult times!

Alumni gifts rose in both number of contributors and amount raised: 356 alumni gave $76,774; 84 friends gave $76,090; and 107 parishes con-tributes $193,807. Our trustees led in generosity with gifts totaling $79,005.

Heartfelt congratulations and gratitude to all of you in the Berkeley community who pulled together in this successful endeavor. We have good reason to celebrate!

Remember that Berkeley continues to rely heavily on our year to year generosity. We cannot rest on our laurels. I know our seminary can count on your strong support for the 2011-12 Annual Fund.

Faithfully yours in Christ,

Charles Royce’s $500,000 Gift Strengthens Berkeley’s Leadership Formation Initiative

Berkeley’s distinctive Leadership Formation initiative first came into being through the generos-

ity of Sara and David Carson, whose gifts have provided the necessary funds for the program for the past five years. Charles Royce, longtime Episcopal Church and Anglican Communion leader, has now enhanced this program by endowing the Wesley-Royce Program for Leadership Formation. His $500,000 gift will provide support for prominent speakers and for colloquia on issues of national and inter-national religious leadership. It will also enable us to offer continuing education for church leaders though the Summer Lead-ership Symposium. Berkeley is profoundly grateful for this expansion of its efforts to provide well-equipped leaders for the Church of tomorrow.

Berkeley’s Ongoing Capital NeedsAs we celebrate the successful comple-tion of the Berkeley»tomorrow Cam-paign, we must also address Berkeley’s continuing urgent capital needs.

Educational Leadership and Ministry (ELM)Berkeley has been a leader in providing chap-lains and educators for schools and universities, and in 2008 launched the first seminary pro-gram at the master’s level to prepare students for this ministry. Initial grants have enabled ELM to thrive under Tony Jarvis’s leadership, but we must now provide for its future by endowing it. The cost of that will be $3.3 million—plus a scholarship endowment of $1 million.

The Porter Chair in Religion and EcologyThe Porter Foundation has pledged a gift toward a $3 million endowment to support the H. Boone and Violet M. Porter Chair in Reli-gion and Environmental Stewardship, of which $1.5 million remains to be committed.

The Berkeley Center and Program EndowmentTo name the Berkeley Center and to provide for its programs in Anglican formation, we need $1 million in new endowment.

Global EngagementWe believe that theological education must now include mission and study trips throughout the Anglican Communion. In order to support such trips—and thereby encourage a passion for mis-sion among our students—we need a fund of at least $500,000.

Unrestricted Endowment and ScholarshipsBerkeley operates on a shoestring and needs con-tinuing capital gifts for unrestricted endowment and for scholarships in order to attract the most talented students for future leadership in the Episcopal Church and Anglican Communion.
