Editorial PP Quah Sek Cheng President’s Message Leong Choy Ying

    Re-energizing Pudu Rotary Club

“We take Pudu Rotary Club as our benchmark”. This was told to me by a fellow president from another club. Similar comments are often heard when we meet up with other club members at District functions.

While our Club has been, and still is recognised projects, great fellowship and effective administration within District 3300, I cannot help but feel that we have settled into a certain “routine” in our activities. In recent years, each succeeding presidents have had a list of “must be done” projects to be carried out in their Rotary calendar. While I am grateful that it has provided a tried and tested structure in the running of our club, some of our members may begin to experience “service fatigue” as the same projects has been repeated for many years.

I believe it is an opportune time for Pudu Rotary Club to do some self assessment and re-evaluate our club’s focus for the next 3-5 years. From there, we could prioritize and re-align our efforts to serve those focus areas more effectively.

The best forum for us to brainstorm and share our ideas will be during the up-coming first Club Assembly for RY2010/2011 to be held on 21 August 2010 from 6.30pm at PDG Paul Lee’s residence. I urge all PRC members to come and play your part and share your vision on the future of our Club.

Have we been cruising along too contentedly? Are some of us operating an “auto-pilot” mode? Personally, I think we have scope to do an upgrade on our engines so as to re-energize Pudu Rotary Club.

Our DG Lim Kok Beng wrote this in our 44th Installation magazine: “What we need most is more forward-thinking, strategic direction for the future of our clubs and districts, strategy that is well thought out, communicated and implemented. That is what Rotary needs.”

    In Rotary Service,President RY 2010/2011

“ I have always thought its important to bear in mind that Rotary is a voluntary organization, composed of people who are all themselves leaders. When addressing such an audience, I have never thought it fitting to exhort or demand. Every Rotary club is and must be autonomous: The leadership of Rotary International exists not to control, but to motivate and guide.

And so when we in Rotary speak about the importance of membership, I believe it of the utmost importance to bear in mind that the PRIMARY EXPERIENCE of Rotary, for the overwhelming majority of Rotarians, IS OF THE CLUB: of club meetings, club projects, and fellow club members.

When Paul Harris began the first Rotary club 104 years ago, he did not initially think of service. Instead, he had in mind a place where people of good character, intelligence, and morals could enjoy other’s fellowship. The service came later, as a natural outgrowth of the gathering of people.

Every good Rotarian, every member who shares our core values, will make a club that much stronger, and that much more attractive for others to join. Unfortunately, it is also the case that bringing in the wrong person can have the opposite effect. Rotarians are and must be people of a certain caliber – people with the capacity to do great deeds, the sense to do them wisely, and the strength of character to do them honestly as well.

In the end, I believe that the best way to bring new members into Rotary is the way it has been done for generations: One member invites a carefully chosen friend, client, or colleague to a meeting and, if the match is a good one, proposes that individual for membership. This is the way that our clubs remain harmonious; it is the way that new clubs become old clubs, and new members become Rotarians for life. And as long as we all do our jobs well, and bring in new members carefully, this is a security we in Rotary will never lack “

The above is penned by the then R.I. President John Kenny (2009/2010) and remind us always to keep in mind the core values of Rotary and Rotary Membership.

Membership growth and development is necessary to ensure that the ideals of Rotary can be carried out successfully. Every year our Club targets the month of August to explain and hopefully interest members from the general public, who have the wish to contribute their part to society, to come forward and join the family of Pudu Rotary Club and become a member of a worldwide organization where one values service above everything else.

  • In 1998 she joined the Real Estate Developers’ Association of Singapore (REDAS) managing housing developers and their issues with Government agencies.

During her stint with REDAS, Rtn Daisy was also managing the Singapore branch of the International Real Estate Federation (FIABC) and also in charge of helping to draft the “Building Maintenance Common Property Act” and the “Design and Build Contract”

And also serves on the Construction Industry Joint Committee.

In 2005 she left REDAS to join American Express to manage their logistics arm based in Intel Penang, Malaysia and Shanghai, China.

Rtn Daisy brings with her a database with property specialists in Singapore and the relevant government agencies, media and professionals in the region.

Rtn. Daisy humorously put the audience at ease with her mantra “ IT is dead, REIT is alive”. The fact that initially Rtn Lawrance Annies’s computer didn’t quite check out lend credence to her swipe at IT (perhaps our Lawrance would like to prove her wrong when he gives us a talk!).

Daisy said that her move to KL from Singapore has been a challenge. Her work with Corporate Real Estate in Singapore didn’t quite prepare her for the cultural differences and she has since adapted nicely into the local scenes and nuances. She sidestepped from elaborating by saying simply “you know” (how things are being done locally) and that whereas in Singapore things are mainly transparent. Her audience seems to understand what she meant.

Her forte is marketing and that includes rehabilitating properties that have fallen behind and needs rebranding and refurbishing to position them to be successful again. Her company is well positioned on both sides of the causeway to be able to provide “one-stop” services to those seeking good investment.

She conceded that Singapore is a more volatile market but there is money to be made as its an island state and the land resources is limited. This is in contrast to the vast land available here and it was somewhat of a shock to her when she first arrived here. However she was quick to point out that Malaysia is a better place to retire.

She showed a few slides of properties her company handle on both sides of the causeway and invited those interested to contact her. Her final slide was that of a reclining lady in swimsuit on a rooftop swimming pool which she said was to “wake” up her audience. That was no need to as she has managed, in her own happy funny sort of way, to play down the fact that she is a director of her company here with the necessary experience to help investors.

Her vocational talk gave the Club a chance to get to know her better and PDG KB Lee would certainly agree as he was amongst those who spoke to her after the meeting. Pity that this time around Rtn. BRENDA had taken ill but one can look forward to her giving her own vocational talk another time.

    DIALYSIS CENTRES

It appears that PP Sam has again challenged Pudu Rotary Club to raise funds for another DIALYSIS CENTRE, this time in KLANG NORTH where recently survey shows that there is an urgent need for a dialysis center there.

Dialysis machines are indispensable to dialysis patients and daily these centers are performing life saving services to those in need.

Thus far Pudu Rotary Club has raised about 2 million ringgit to fund dialysis machines which have been placed in centers in Klang, Rawang, Raub and Shah Alam.

The St. John Ambulans Malaysia has approached Pudu Rotary Club for assistance and Pudu Rotary Club hopes to set up a new center in Klang North sometime in year 2011.

SURELY SUCH A WORTHY CAUSE DESERvES EvERYBODY’S SUPPORT?

So, don’t fade into the corner when SAM approaches you for assistance!

    GOOD NEW!

PP PHANG’s recent delicate operation for stones in the gall bladder is successful albeit a little delicate.

He needs a lot of rest, good cheers and will be absent from our Club till the end of this year for full recuperation.

We wish him well and look forward to seeing him soon at the Club meetings.

The Editor misses his help and is grateful to all Pudu Rotarians besides the Editorial Board, who willingly come forward to assist when called upon.

Why Rotary Needs Young Members(by Vanessa N. Glavinskas)

A recent study shows that most Rotarians are between the ages of 50 and 59. Rotarians under 40 make up only 11 percent of overall membership.

“If we don’t get enough young people into Rotary, then Rotary will die,” RI President Bill Boyd told the newest regional Rotary International membership coordinators (RRIMCs) at their training seminar in March. “We take young people and give them that Rotaract experience and then tell them, Go away — come back in 10 years.”

Youth program alumni rarely make the transition into Rotary, a pattern that many consider a missed opportunity. After all, participants in Interact, Rotaract, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, Rotary Youth Exchange, and Group Study Exchange are selected because they represent the best of the best in their age group. Many are sponsored by Rotarians or The Rotary Foundation to travel abroad, where they learn about the organization and develop exceptional leadership skills. About 84 percent of current RI and Foundation educational program participants say they would like to join Rotary someday. Still, most of them are not invited to join.

“There are many clubs [in England] who say, ‘Why would they want to join us? We are not working, we’re older and set in our ways,’ rather than trying to make their club attractive to younger people,” says RRIMC John Hockin, of the Rotary Club of Woodhall Spa, England. And some Rotarians in Europe and Japan believe that young people don’t have enough professional experience to be Rotarians.

In other parts of the world, young professionals are actually reshaping the business landscape, which gives current Rotarians another incentive to recruit them. “In India, more and more youth are getting into business,” says Ramachandran Ganapathi, a member of the RI Membership Development and Retention Committee and the Rotary Club of Madras-T. Nagar, India. He notes that this trend, combined with the country’s rapid economic growth, means tomorrow’s leaders will be younger than ever before. “As the IT [information technology] sector booms, we try to make Rotary attractive to its leaders.”

Sam F. Owori, of the Rotary Club of Kampala, Uganda, says clubs in his district use Rotaract as a recruiting tool. “Many Rotaractors know more about Rotary than the Rotarians,” Owori says. Rotaractors around age 30 begin visiting Rotary clubs in their area to determine which one they would feel most comfortable joining. “They join [Rotaract] with their sights set on becoming Rotarians,” he says.

Although recruiting younger members is crucial to ensuring a strong future for Rotary, many RRIMCs point out that seasoned members are still the backbone of the organization. They bring both knowledge and resources to their clubs, and older members, especially retirees, often have more time than younger members to devote to service projects, not to mention a wealth of business savvy to pass on.

Because demographics and cultural norms vary by region, there’s no single best way to attract younger members. But if you’re concerned about the future of Rotary in your area, take a look at your local business community and compare it with your club. Do they reflect the same picture? If not, raise the issue with club leadership for discussion. Your club might consider supporting one of Rotary’s youth programs or keeping better tabs on youth program alumni for future recruitment. Also, stay aware of volunteer trends, and keep an eye on other organizations in your region. Is there a young professionals group that potential Rotarians flock to over your club?

Finally, try to picture your club 10 years from now. Who will be in charge? Will the club still be a pillar in your community? Get everyone involved in keeping your club relevant. After all, the next 100 years are up to you.

Often we have visiting Rotarians from other countries, today we had PP Rajiv M. Mevgi of RC Maduca from India. Rotary is a worldwide organization.

SOME OF THE ROUTINE DURING OUR REGULAR WEEKLY MEETINGS

In case one thinks Rotary is all “business” and serious, here you can see that all are relaxed in each other’s company.

After all PUDU ROTARY CLUB is a respected yet fun and friendly club to be with where Rotary “business” and fellowship goes hand in hand – picture shows GARY LIM, our youthful chairman for the MEMBERSHIP Programme scheduled for 16th Aug.

Except perhaps when there is a serious question to be asked of the speaker … PDG K B LEE here.

In such a relaxed atmosphere one can see that our speaker DAISY CHIU is more than at ease with Club Secretary LAWRANCE.
