PREFACE
Since the manuscript of the preceding volume of this series was com-pleted, the Jewish communities of the United States and Canada havesuffered the loss of an unusually large number of distinguished mem-bers, many of whom had achieved distinction not only for services tothe community but also because of their outstanding contributions tothe progress of the general community. These men were representativeof a number of fields of human endeavor. Of Benjamin Nathan Car-dozo, late Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States,it has been aptly said that his life was "nobly dedicated to the greatpurpose of administering and perfecting justice among men withouttaint or strain of any motive, private or selfish." Professor IsraelDavidson, of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, was in thefront rank of Jewish scholars throughout the world. Dr. Isaac Husikmade in his lifetime unusually significant contributions to philosophyin both its Jewish and general aspects. William M. Lewis, Judge ofthe Court of Common Pleas of Philadelphia, was an intensely activeleader of the Zionist movement of the United States, and at the sametime a contributor to the progress of the Jewish community and ofthe city and state in which he lived. A. Leo Weil, was an outstandingcitizen of Pittsburgh, who fought conscientiously for the maintenanceof good government, without which democracy languishes and dies.B. Charney Vladeck brought with him from Czarist Russia to Americathat passion for righteousness and social justice which animated to sohigh a degree the leaders of the revolution against Czarist tyranny; heremained during his lifetime an outspoken enemy of despotism, whetherit emanated from the Right or the Left extreme of political thought.Samuel W. Jacobs of Montreal, Canada, gave his country a lifetimeof service as a leader of its bar and as a member of its parliament; atthe same time, he was the dean among a devoted band of men whohelped to shape the destinies of the Jewish community of Canada.
The brief yet adequate sketches of the lives and achievements ofthese men, presented in this volume, have been contributed by friendsand associates who had a first hand knowledge of their subjects. Onbehalf of the organizations jointly responsible for the Year Book, theEditor wishes at this point to express their heart-felt gratitude to these
iv PREFACE
contributors: Edgar J. Nathan, Jr., author of the memoir on the lateJustice Cardozo; Professor Louis Finkelstein, of the biographicalsketch of his colleague, Professor Davidson; Dr. Julius Greenstone, who contributed the article on Dr. Isaac Husik; David J. Gaiter, editor of the Philadelphia Jewish Exponent, who contributed thesketch of the late Judge William M. Lewis; Rabbi Solomon Goldenson, who wrote the biographical appreciation of the late A. Leo Weil; JohnHerling, New York City journalist, who contributed a vivid sketch ofthe late B. C. Vladeck; and Rabbi Herman Abramowitz of Montreal, who has given us an interesting picture of the character and person-ality of the late Samuel W. Jacobs.
In addition to these biographical sketches, we present in this volumethree other special articles. Two of these are bound up with importantanniversaries, though far apart as to periods of time and the characterof the events celebrated. Professor Solomon Zeitlin, who contributeda biography of Moses Maimonides on the occasion of the eight-hun-dredth anniversary of the birth of that great sage, has written for thisvolume an interesting and enlightening article on another great figurein the history of the development of Judaism, namely, Rabbi ShelomoIzhaki of Troyes, France, known to millions of Jews throughout theworld as Rashi, the ninth-hundredth anniversary of whose birth willbe celebrated during the coming year. The other anniversary is thetwenty-fifth of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, which occurs in November 1939. Especially in view of the tragicevents of recent years, which have made this great agency of the Jew-ish community of the United States more needed today than ever inits history, it is deemed fitting that an article on the J. D. C. shouldform a part of the contents of the present volume. We present also avery brief memoir on the statistics of the Jewish population of theUnited States, which gives tentative figures on the number of Jews invarious states and divisions in the country on the basis of a study madeby Dr. H. S. Linfield in 1937-39 as Special Agent of the Bureau of theCensus. These preliminary figures show that the number of Jews inthe United States in 1937 was approximately 4,830,000, an increaseduring the preceding decade of about 600,000. This study, it shouldbe stated here, was made possible by the financial support of theAmerican Jewish Committee.
The Review of the Year 5699 was prepared by two members of thestaff of the American Jewish Committee: the section on United States,by Mr. Morris Fine; the section on foreign countries, by Mr. MosesMoskowitz. The Editor desires to express to these two co-workers and
PREFACE
to Mr. Nathan C. Belth, who assisted in the preparation of importantsub-divisions of the article, his grateful appreciation. It should benoted here that, in view of the publication, during the past year, bythe American Jewish Committee of the Contemporary Jewish Record,a bi-monthly review of events and digest of opinion, in which a detailedchronology appears in each issue, it has not been necessary to have theReview of the Year as detailed as similar articles in previous issues.
Little need be said about the recurrent features, which remain verymuch the same as they have been presented for several years past. There is, however, one important exception, that is, the Directory ofJewish Federations and Welfare Funds, which, this year, includesalso the constituent or affiliated organizations of these local institutions.
Miss Rose A. Herzog again compiled the directories and lists andthe appendices to the Review of the Year, and Mrs. Rose G. Steinagain painstakingly revised the article on statistics of Jews. The editorextends to both of them the expression of his heartfelt gratitude. Heis also eager again to thank Mr. Maurice Jacobs, Executive Directorof the Jewish Publication Society, for the cordial cooperation so freelyand cheerfully extended.
