You’ve often heard that you get out of something what you put into it. We believe that saying is true with MBI as well. Many associations offer a good return on investment, and that is important. But with MBI, you will develop long term relationships and partnerships.

Founded in 1983, MBI is the only international non-profit trade association serving the modular construction industry. We represent corporations across the world involved in the design, manufacturer, transportation, installation and assembly of modular buildings for a variety of markets, including education, office, health care, retail, emergency relief, workforce housing and industrial markets. These projects range from single module education and construction site offices to high-end multistory complex facilities for some of the largest customers in the world.

The purpose of MBI is to expand the overall market share for modular construction. We do this by helping to remove barriers that limit industry growth as well as through outreach and education efforts to promote the advantages of modular construction. MBI members generally fall into one of two divisions.

Relocatable Buildings Division: Companies and suppliers that offer buildings for sale or lease and typically have a lease fleet of buildings in inventory. These buildings are typically repurposed/relocated/re-leased at secondary locations and often for new purposes.

Permanent Modular Construction: Contractors that manufacturer, deliver and/or install modular components that are stand-alone or integrated into a larger site-specific project.

As a member of MBI, you have the opportunity to participate in various business development offerings, the ability to help influence the regulatory climate, and access to hundreds of industry professionals. While MBI’s events are the best way to make connections with potential customers and partners and to stay informed on the latest industry developments, we offer numerous other avenues to promote your company. To help you get the most from this relationship, we have prepared this brochure highlighting key benefits.

Whether you are new to the association or just considering membership in MBI, please do not hesitate to contact us to determine how we can work together. The MBI staff is ready to help you make those lasting relationships and tackle your most pressing issues.

REMOVING BARRIERS AND

PROTECTING YOUR BUSINESS

On average, businesses pay between $8,000 and $10,000 per employee per year in hidden costs associated with various rules and regulations. As government agencies become more intrusive and pervasive, this cost will escalate.

At MBI, we realize it is difficult and time consuming for you to keep track of the numerous bills, regulations, legislation and code changes that may have an impact on your bottom line. Every year, MBI monitors and reviews thousands of different bills, on the state and federal level, and proposed regulations to determine their potential impact on our industry. MBI has taken the lead to introduce, change and defeat legislation and regulations that would have an adverse impact on our industry’s ability to utilize our assets in the manner in which they were intended. We have successfully protected our members’ interests in numerous states and provinces on issues ranging from taxation, plan approval, code compliance, relocation and recertification. MBI updates and alerts members to pending and enacted legislation and regulations impacting the industry at the federal, state and local levels.

While we can’t ensure that we will always be successful, we guarantee that we will fight to protect your business.

With curiosity and enthusiasm about modular construction at an all-time high, the Modular Building Institute has developed regional Modular Construction Summits in an effort to reach out and educate developers, engineers, contractors and architects, and discuss current topics and trends in modular construction. Hundreds have come together to hear discussions on a variety of topics such as Permanent Modular Construction for Multifamily Applications, Modular Solutions for Disaster Relief, Innovation in Modular Construction, High-Performance Green Schools and more. The summits are open to the public and offer presentations from the host schools and industry professionals, and whenever possible, include a factory tour of a local MBI member company.

MBI UNIVERSITY ONLINE

This online anytime event features MBI’s popular “Essentials of Commercial Modular Construction” class, which provides training on the commercial modular construction process – start to finish – from qualifying customers to building finish out. CONTINUING

EDUCATION UNITS

AIA: MBI sponsors the Modular Campus on the Building Design and Construction (BD+C) website that offers American Institute of Architects members continuing education credits for reading online articles and taking online courses on modular building. MBI also helps promote association members’ AIA & RAIC continuing education events, serving as a clearinghouse for registrations and signups for Lunch & Learns, presentations, and other educational events hosted by member companies. Contact the MBI Communications Department for more information.

ICC: MBI is a Preferred Provider of continuing education units for the International Code Council, working to educate code officials on the benefits and processes of modular construction: The ICC certification program certifies over 14,000 code officials, inspectors, plan reviewers, permit technicians, special inspectors, and students every year in over 40 national examination categories.

CLEMSON PROFESSIONAL

DESIGNATION PROGRAM

MBI and Clemson University have developed an industry training program for commercial modular builders. The Department of Construction Science & Management at Clemson University is well-known and recognized as a leader in efforts to improve the quality of construction and the built environment. In fact, Clemson’s master’s degree program in construction science and management was one of the first two master’s programs in the United States to be accredited by the American Council of Construction Education. The new MBI training will comply with the American National Standards Institute’s Certificate Accreditation Program.

The Modular Building Institute (MBI) along with Clemson University developed, “Introduction to Commercial Modular Construction” over two years with the goal of introducing the reader to an innovative and exciting construction method. This book discusses the modular building process compared to traditional site-built construction and is designed to help the reader understand terminology and concepts of modular building including client needs, design, fabrication, transportation, and installation. It is available for purchase through the MBI website!

MODULAR CONSTRUCTION EDUCATION FOUNDATIONS

The MBI Educational Foundation and the MBI Canadian Foundation were established specifically to provide educational opportunities in the form of training, research, and scholarships to individuals with an interest in commercial modular construction. The foundation began in 2001 with a generous $100,000 gift from Barry & Mary Gossett. Mr. Gossett is an industry veteran, member of the MBI Hall of Fame, recipient of the MBI Outstanding Achievement Award, and esteemed friend to many modular building professionals. Since their beginning, the foundations have trained over 1000 industry professionals, awarded dozens of student scholarships, and spear-headed invaluable industry research.

PARTNERS IN EDUCATION

The foundations continue to establish partnerships with institutions of higher learning around the world to help educate a rising generation of construction professionals about the benefits of modular buildings. Schools of architecture, engineering and construction management engage in partnerships ranging from $2500 to $10,000 in annual support. Benefits to the school include scholarships, instructional support, in-kind donations and travel to World of Modular. Benefits to MBI members include timely research, a unique form of outreach, and recognition as industry leaders.

UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA

MBI is a partner in the creation of an Industrialization of Building Construction program at the University of Alberta’s Hole School of Engineering. This effort marks the first industry/university collaboration to create an entire program focused on alternative and industrialized construction techniques. The partnership also allows MBI and its members the opportunity to be guest lecturers, provide factory tours for students, and assist in the research and development of white papers and related articles.

UNIVERSITY OF UTAH

The MBI research with the University of Utah studies off-site modular production processes using case studies in international permanent modular construction (PMC). The PMC projects documented herein provide a research test bed to evaluate the performance metrics attributed to off-site construction and the contingent qualitative contextual factors by which PMC in building design and construction may be realized. This research quantifies the added value of PMC and evaluates the contextual factors by which PMC in building design and construction may be realized in the U.S. and beyond.
