uch has happened since our last Scholarship Ball, but one thing has not changed: Faithful Ravens are uniting to make sure the mission of Benedictine College will make an impact on the world.

We are actually really excited about this year’s Scholarship Ball. For many of us, the best part of this night each year is getting to see what so many friends are up to. This year, the best part is that so many friends around the world can see what Benedictine College is up to.

The year 2020 was a challenge, to put it mildly. But it has been moving beyond words to see our faculty rise to the necessities of educating in a pandemic, our alumni rise to the occasion of serving in a pandemic, and our community grow closer together than ever.

Now it is time to focus our attention on the stars of tonight’s show: our students. These young people have spent their college years in challenging circumstances, and they have proven themselves to be remarkably resilient, willing to stand up for our mission, willing to sacrifice for each other, and willing to drop to their knees to pray for our future.

Thank you so much for making it possible for them to be at Benedictine College. Now, let their amazing accomplishments inspire you with hope for the future.

Forward Always Forward,

Stephen D. Minnis ’82

Student Speaker

Miguel Monteclaro is a senior Political Science major who is the current Battalion Commander for the Pony Express Senior Army ROTC program. He is in charge of cadets from Benedictine College, Missouri Western State University, UMKC, Park University, Rockhurst University and Northwestern Missouri State University. His mission there is to ensure that all junior cadets are receiving the proper training and motivation they need to succeed as U.S. Army Officers.

Miguel came to Benedictine because he was attracted to both the strong faith life and the culture of hospitality and service extended to him during his visit. He was eager to emulate that experience for others and he has accomplished that goal while on campus and within the ROTC program.

Upon graduation in May, Miguel will be commissioned as a Field Artillery Officer in the Kansas Army National Guard. He will train at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, before returning to Kansas to serve as a platoon leader in Bravo Battery, 161st Field Artillery, Kansas Army National Guard. He also hopes to pursue a career as a state trooper with the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Benedictine is my choice over other colleges because it is truly one of a kind. One of the most unique things which I admire about Benedictine is how involved its Catholic identity is in the Art Department, my specific area of study. There’s no other college where I could study art as a touchpoint between us and God, in such an encouraging atmosphere. Benedictine has played a very important role in my family. Since my older sister began attending Benedictine, my family has fallen in love with it. Receiving scholarships to Benedictine has allowed my sister and me to receive the Catholic collegiate education we had always wanted, and could not have received anywhere else.
