swimmers.
Have a great week!

Swimming News 2015 On Monday February 9, our annual Ben Venue Swimming Carnival was held at the Armidale Aquatic Centre. Participation was very good with large numbers of students trying their best in a variety of events including the very popular novelties.
The winning house, in a very close contest was Oxley!
A huge thank you to all parents who helped on the day. We would not be able to run the carnival without you and your assistance was greatly appreciated.
Age Champions were:
Junior Boys Angus Ditchfield Junior Girls Akina Blake
Runner up Elliot Clarke Runners up Emily Hunt & Molly Deiderick
11yrs Boys Aiden Swick 11yrs Girls Elise de Crespigny
Runner up Hayden Schumacher Runner up Isobelle Dick
Senior Boys Zac Davidson Senior Girls Lara Moloney
Runner up Takoda Griffiths Runner up Caitlin Lord
One record was broken and one equalled at the carnival. The Oxley Senior Girls relay team, consisting of Lara Moloney, Isabella Maschio, Elise de Crespigny and Isobelle Dick set a new relay record. Congratulations girls!
In addition to this, Elise de Crespigny equalled the current 11yrs girls Breaststroke record in a time of 50:00 seconds, a fabulous effort!
One of the highlights of the day was the annual Parent/Teacher race. Congratulations to Jeremy Wilson who blitzed the field in this event!
Following the school carnival, 40 students were selected to represent Ben Venue at the Armidale District Carnival on Thursday 19 February. Students swam at the District Carnival with great success and we have three relay teams and a large number of individual swimmers who have been selected represent Ben Venue at the Regional Carnival on Tuesday March 3. AROUND THE CLASSROOM
2H students have had a busy start to the year, settling into class and school routines quickly and showing that they are well and truly ready for Year 2! They are already displaying fantastic independent working skills and are enjoying learning with their peers during group activities.
The students have been making the most of our reading corner to focus on the skills that good readers use such as predicting and making connections. They have been enjoying writing independently in their journals and discussing a range of strategies to use when spelling unfamiliar words.
Students have started looking at different celebrations from around the globe as part of our HSIE unit. We were fascinated by the traditions and festivities involved in Chinese New Year which was celebrated last week. Welcome to the Year of the Goat!
We have a fantastic year of teaching and learning experiences ahead of us and look forward to learning together throughout the year. Lana Howlett
KB During the last three weeks, the Kindergarten students have quickly settled into their classes and school routines. It has been pleasing to watch how responsibly students organise their belongings each morning and now join their friends in the playground ready to start the day.
Each class has been busy exploring Big Books and students have been enjoying learning rhymes and action songs as they learn to recognise sounds and words. Classes have also enjoyed coming together in the hall to participate in new songs and dances.
Next week we are looking forward to participating in two new activities including going to the Computer Room to begin the development of our technology skills. Please remember to discuss and return your Rules for Online Safety note. We are
also beginning the TUCABIA Sports Skills program. Thank you to the parents who have kindly volunteered their time to assist with this program and other activities throughout the year.
Did You Know? The Bilby is a nocturnal marsupial that lives in the semi-arid and arid areas of Australia. Bilbies live in burrows which they dig up to 2 metres deep. Melanie Bulmer
5P has had a great start to the year and all class members have settled into the new routines in Year 5.
In English we are studying ‘Blueback’ by Tim Winton. ‘Blueback’ details the life of Abel Jackson; a diver and later a marine biologist from the age of 10 through to his adult life. The title of the book originates from a fish that Abel sees while diving in a bay near his house; a giant blue groper. We highly recommend this novel as it uses amazing literary devices including alliteration and similes.
Students thoroughly enjoyed the Snake Tails show on Friday. Seeing a tame blue tongue lizard close up and patting a python were some of the highlights. We learnt a lot of new information about different species of reptiles.
In Mathematics students have been learning about the different types of angles including obtuse, acute, right, straight and reflex angles. Students have been particularly focused when learning how to measure angles with a protractor. Bronwyn Paull
