Ben Venue Public School…
where great things are always happening!
Welcome to Week 9 Term 3 September 8, 2015
It has been a very busy time and it never ceases to amaze me how the
teachers at Ben Venue give unstintingly of their time to make sure
that students take part in many activities and experiences. Many of
the rehearsals, training times and other commitments are done
during lunch breaks or before school. An Evening with ACOS was an
event held last Wednesday which epitomised this. Under the
wonderful leadership of Sally Spillane, a large band of Ben Venue
teachers helped put on make-up, assist backstage and supervise
students while they were waiting to perform. It was a superb evening
of entertainment from the Armidale Community of Schools. Thank
you to Sally Spillane, Rebecca O’Hara and Lana Howlett who prepared
students to sing, play wacky instruments, perform acts and dance.
On Friday students enjoyed the performance of G’Day Asia. These shows are booked a year in advance and with
the Cricket Clinic also on Friday, this year Aboriginal students attended the Day in the Dale with family members.
5W students were placed third in the ‘Armidale Fair Trading Centre NADIOC Week Art Competition’

From the Deputy’s desk …… Ben Venue’s success continues with another win by the Boys Soccer team, who are now in the top 8 in the state and
the Girls Hockey team who are travelling to Narellan today to compete in the State Finals tomorrow. Good Luck
Girls! Unfortunately the Girls Touch Football team were defeated last Monday by a very strong Warialda side and
now bow out of the competition. Well done girls and a big thank you to Rhiannon Trott for coaching the girls and the
parents who transported the girls.
Congratulations to the members of the Marimba group, Circus group and Year
2 dance group at ‘An Evening with
ACOS’. All of these performances
were spectacular!

DENTAL CLINIC
The Dental Van has been in our school since Tuesday last week. During this time the clinic saw the majority of
students who had returned forms. The van has now left the school.
My understanding is that the free toothbrushes promised to the students who returned the Medicare information
will be sent to the school when the forms have been processed by head office.
If you have any questions regarding the Dental Van visit please contact Australian Mobile Dental Care on
(02) 8850 3005. Please do not contact the school.
HIGH SCHOOL ORIENTATION DAYS
Both Armidale High and Duval High Schools will be holding their Orientation Days for Year 7 2016 on Thursday
November 5. More detailed information will be sent home closer to the date. Parents will receive letters from the
High Schools.
SCHOOL SWIMMING SCHEME
The Swim school begins this week for selected students in Years 2 and 3. If your child is involved in this activity
please ensure all clothes are clearly labelled. I suggest packing a plastic bag for wet items. Students must come to
school in full school uniform. Lou Moffatt
STARMAKER SEMI— FINALS 2015
Years 3-4 Wednesday September 9 from 2:00pm—3:15pm
Years 5-6 Monday September 14 from 2:00—3:15pm
Through the classroom music program, students have completed Round 1 of Ben Venue Starmaker. What
fabulous acts I have been privileged to see from the students. Students have had a very difficult time as
judges work our which acts will go through to the semi-finals, a valuable lesson in learning how important
it is to be a good judge.
A big thank you to the teachers in our school who have supervised students practising their acts in the
classrooms at lunchtime. Your help has been greatly appreciated.
The semi-finals will be great so if you have some spare time, come along and be entertained by the
talented students of Ben Venue. Yours in Music, Sally Spillane
AROUND THE CLASSROOMS
KP Welcome back Mrs Porter! The Penguins and Mrs
Bishop have worked very hard in your absence.
KP has been reading ‘The Journey Home’ by Alison
Lester—a fantasy journey through many lands, meeting
a host of characters. Students have recently been with
mermaids and pirates and last week a gypsy with her
crystal ball predicted she would visit and “feed” us
goulash and dumplings.
Students have been developing their knowledge of time,
reading and making clocks. KP have also been graphing
our ‘Home Reading’ involvement on the class window.
Our highest number of home reading changes in one day
has been 11 students (last Tuesday and Friday). Well
done!
Sickness seems to have hit KP quite hard in the last few
weeks. Thank you to all parents who have sent in
absentee notes. It is important for our roll keeping
I’ve had a lovely three weeks with the talented Penguins.
Mrs Porter is a lucky lady! Linda Bishop
6R has been very busy this term. Along with the rest of
Year 6, 6R have been learning about myths and legends
in English; ‘Earthquake Explorers’ in Science; have
looked into the ‘Identity’ of Australia and their own
identity in Human Society and Its Environment; crunched
numbers in Mathematics while working on extended
multiplication and negative numbers with Cartesian
planes! 6R would especially like to thank Miss Tancred
(Intern from UNE), who has engaged the students in
these lessons. All of 6R will miss you next Term!
Students and teachers have also undertaken a few
adventures to Duval and Armidale High Schools. So far
we have participated in lessons like: Computer Studies,
History, Music, PE, and everyone's favourite, Food
Technology, and are looking forward to the next lessons.
Most importantly Year 6 has been busy preparing for the
school play ‘Never Grow Up’. Year 6 will be performing in
early November (we will let you know the dates closer to
the event). Thank you to the parents who have already
volunteered their time to assist with making costumes.

‘An Evening with ACOS’
What a fabulous concert! The students from Ben Venue put on wonderful performances
throughout the evening. They are to be congratulated for their fine work!!
A huge thank you to the many teachers from Ben Venue who assisted on the night in so
many ways. The night ran smoothly thanks to them all.
A big thank you to Joe Russell, Brian Schaeffer, Robert Griffiths and Andrew Donoghue who transported
marimbas, stage boxes, instruments etc to and from Lazenby Hall, your help was invaluable to us!
Finally a big thank you to our wonderful parents for getting all the students there and supporting the
concert, it was fabulous!
Last Friday Year 5 and Year 6 were fortunate to have two NSW Blues players Will and Ben join them in a couple of modified cricket games. The students were all involved and had a wonderful time. Amanda Swain
