WEST ALGARVE WHAT TO DO?

3

Welcome to the West Algarve. We are very pleased that you will be spending your holidays with us.

THE WILD WEST

Far less crowded than the central zone of the Algarve, the West retains much of its natural “wildness”. Here you can still enjoy lonely trails in the pristine nature of the adjacent natural park “parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina”.The West Algarve coastline provides hundreds of sandy islets, salt lagoons, steep cliffs, sandy bays and coves separated by mysterious grottoes and strange rock formations. Further west, the coast gets progressively wilder. Five of the region’s bestbeaches lie on the west coast.

There are also some fantastic walks in this rugged region. It’s on these trails that you’re most likely to spot some of the diverse wildlife, which ranges from 200 bird species to pond turtles and wild boar. In early summer, you’ll see the ragged nests of storks capping every spire and chimney, while brilliantly plumaged bee-eaters flash yellow and green across the path.

Europe’s south-western tip is also home to highest point Foia, 902 meters above sea level, near the village of Monchique. This mountainous region had been a favoured site of the Roman era inhabitants, because of the many terraces and granite stonewalls. This has become the source of the many local products that are sold in the village marketplace. Another well-known delicacy is the Medronho, a locally brewed alcoholic beverage from indigenous fruit.

Enjoy your stay!

LAGOSMEIA pRAIAWith soft, white sand, Meia praia is one of the largest bays in Europe and benefits from a calm sea due to its length. It’s lack of rocks makes it ideal for nautical sports. Even when there is a strong wind, you can find delightful sheltered sandy coves between the cliffs.Meia praia extends over 4km up to the delta of the rivers Odiáxere and Arão and has numerous car parks along it’s length. There are ramps and wooden walkways for ease of access. Alternatively, during the summer there is a water taxi (“Vai Vem”) from the main avenida in Lagos

pRAIA DA BATATApraia da Batata is the closest beach to Lagos town centre and consequently is known locally as the “town beach”. As you arrive to the beach you are met with the magnificent sight of a fortress, Forte ponta da Bandeira, which was historically used to guard Lagos by protecting the river mouth from attack. Although small compared to Meia praia, praia da Batata is wonderfully sheltered and is divided into smaller coves accessible by holes in the rocks. There is a beach bar at the main entrance to the beach and another further along. There are sunbeds for hire and activity kiosks at the entrance to the beach for water sports and sea kayak tours.

pRAIA DOS ESTuDANTESpraia dos Estudantes is a tiny sandy beach, sheltered by rock formations that extend out to sea, offering calm, shallow rock pool in which to bathe. Tunnels have been dug by hand into these cliffs: one to the west which gives access to a small beach and another to the east which links to the nearby beach of praia da Batata. This beach has a humid, salty atmosphere and a strong smell of the sea. Other tourist facilities include a restaurant at the top of the cliff which unfortunately is unsupervised. Direction is Southeast / East.

LAGOSDONA ANADona Ana is probably the beach most frequented by tourists.

This beach is essentially split into two beaches with a protruding

cliff separating the two sides at high tide. The sand on Dona Ana

is slightly coarser than on the beaches in the neighbouring area,

and the beach itself is surrounded by lovely rock formations.

When you look at the rock formations they come alive forming

many different shapes and characters. Access to the beach is

by way of wooden steps, so it’s not suitable for disabled access.

Dona Ana beach has a restaurant and there is limited parking

behind the beach.

pRAIA DO pINHãOpraia do pinhão is a little beach that can be reached through a

pedestrian trail from the Dona Ana beach or from over the top

of the cliff. The beach is small and nestled between high cliffs

of intense and warm colours. A huge natural arch appears to

spring from the beach and on the opposite side a viewpoint

has been built with a stairway leading down to the sea, allowing

visitors to dip in the sea without going through the sand. Limited

parking with support equipment and monitoring during the

bathing season. East side facing.

pRAIA DA BALANçAIt owes its name to a pillar located at the begining of sand that

resembles a huge, historical balance of dishes. It appears to be

the first beach on the east face of the promontory of the ponta

da piedade. From Lagos you can make boat trips to enjoy the

design of the shoreline, and to reach the sandy beach, since the

land access involves some skill in terms of climbing. The beach is

small and secluded, nestled between high cliffs which unfold in

living color. Located 10 minutes walk from the lighthouse of ponta

da piedade. This beach is without any support or supervision

and parking is very limited. It’s orientation is Southeasterly.

LAGOSpRAIA DO CAMILOCamilo beach in Lagos is simply beautiful! The view over the

beach from the top is breathtaking. picturesque cliffs embrace

the little beach and the rock formations are magnificent. It is a

wonderfully sheltered bay for swimming and is an ideal choice of

beach for a breezy day. There is a restaurant on the cliffs above

Camilo beach which is very popular with local residents, serving

local dishes and specialising in freshly caught seafood and the

views are stunning! ‘praia do Camilo’ is on the way to ponta da

piedade and is the turning 500m further on from Dona Ana

along ‘Estrada da ponta da piedade’. There is a small car park

by the restaurant.

pRAIA DO CANAVIALThe beach name derives from the dense reed bed that develops

around the water line. The beach access is via the hiking trails

from the ponta da piedade Lighthouse in direction to the

Cascade Resort, where small bushes and woods compose the

trail down to the beach through stairs carved in the cliff. The

beach is very narrow, sheltered by cliffs and scenically rugged,

isolated and very quiet. Water transparency reveals submerged

rock formations aesthetically aligned, forming a series of long

ridges.

pRAIA DO pORTO DE MóSThe beach is located in a broad open valley, forming an extensive

sandy beach framed by high cliffs. When it is a clear day you can

see the entire coastline to Sagres. In wet conditions a thick layer

of clay forms on the base of the cliff which the locals say has

medicinal properties. Although it is in close proximity to the city

of Lagos, the area surrounding the beach still retains it’s natural

features and has very quiet sandy stretches. There are two

beach restaurants with the usual stunning views and a large car

park right behind the beach. The beach is supervised during the

bathing season. South Oriented.

Luz uNTIL VILA DO BISpO

pRAIA DA LuzThis beach is located in the popular tourist town of Luz. Divided

into two distinct areas, one with white and thin sand and the

other with rock formations. The water is crystal clear, and the

beach has been awarded and classified as Bandeira Azul,

meaning that the sand, water and facilities are of top quality

and in unspoiled condition. Here you can find watersport

facilities and the beach is bounded on its Eastern side by the

so-called Rocha Negra.

pRAIA DO BuRGAOpart of the village of Burgau this beach has a more urban

character and marks the western limit of the Natural park of

Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina. The beach stretches

along a small cove sheltered from the weather. It still works as

a fishing port where they practice forms of artisanal fisheries.

Also on this beach, as on Salema beach you can watch the

boats return to land their catch after fishing. Within the cliffs it is

still possible to discern a XVII century fortification and the ruins

of a lofty XVI century tower. It has some parking but meager

space, various support facilities (restaurant and toilets) and it is

supervised during the bathing season. South Oriented.

pRAIA DAS CABANAS VELHASA small warm beach, sometimes it has no sand when the tide

is high, with a modest inlet and cliffs where you can observe

numerous recesses and cavities. The beach stretches to the

east and it is possible to find peculiar rock formations. This little

beach is frequented by bathers, and the pontoon has been

used as the spring fishery. Located about 3kms from the village

of Burgau, it has ample parking and has support equipment

(restaurant and toilets) and supervision during the bathing

Luz uNTIL VILA DO BISpO

pRAIA DA SALEMAThe beach is part of the village of Salema, a small fishing village

and works as a fishing port, with the central stretch of beach

occupied by boats and related fishing gear such as pots or

hooks and apparatus. Here is possible to observe the return of

boats to the beach after the day of toil and taste the results

at the tables of the various restaurants in town. The ruins of a

Roman villa and a fish cannery also exist in Salema testifying

to the long tradition of local fishermen. Carnivorous bipedal

dinosaur footprints, which inhabited this region for about 140

million years can be observed on the rock walls of the cliff. There

is organised parking here and it is supervised during the bathing

season. Southerly direction.

pRAIA DA FIGuEIRAThe pedestrian access to this beach is via a narrow trail that

traverses one of the most beautiful valleys in the region, with

green hills, areas of pine forest and towering rocky Alforia

where you can admire huge caves. The beach is bordered by

cliffs of warm colors with very curious forms, to the east can

be seen, the ruins of a XVI century fortification. Located about

1 km from the village of Figueira, parking is cramped parking

with no organisation which is 500m from the beach. It has no

supervision or support equipment. Southeast oriented.

pRAIA DO zAVIALThe beach is located at the mouth of a river.. This is broad and

visited by surfers, but the spring stretch is more tranquil, with

jagged cliffs and rock formations which locally are called hollows.

At zavial you can visit the ruins of a XVII century fortification.

Located respectively about 5 and 2 kms from the village of

Raposeira, zavial beach parking has no organisation but it has

support facilities (restaurant and toilets) and is supervised

during the bathing season,. Westerly orientation.

pRAIA DA INGRINAAlong the way to the beach you can enjoy the megalithic

monuments that people throughout this region have made -

especially standing stones carved in white limestone. The beach

is small, shell-shaped and looks heavenly. It’s very inviting to swim

in the calm waters of the bay. Scuba diving is encouraged at this

beach, with a large area of submerged rock formations to both

the east and the west. Located about 4 kms from the village of

Raposeira, this beach has ample parking but no organisation with

support equipment (restaurant and toilets) and it is supervised

during the bathing season. Southerly Oriented.

pRAIA DO BARRANCOThe beach is at the mouth of one of the most beautiful valleys

in the region. It is small but wide and at the end of the beach

are cliffs of bright colours where the ruins of a XVII century

fortress can also be seen. It is located 5kms from the village of

Raposeira. There are no road signs but the beach has ample

parking but no organisation, support facilities or supervision.

SAGRESpRAIA DO MARTINHALThis beach is located to the east of the village of Sagres and can

be quite windy due to persistent winds from the north entering

the broad valley that extends inland. The waters are calm and

inviting for both windsurfing and diving. There are beautiful

underwater islets which are situated along the beach, famous

for its rocky crevices and caves. Located 3 kms from the centre

of Sagres, it has ample parking, support facilities (restaurants

and toilets) and surveillance in the bathing season. Southeast

orientation.

pRAIA DA MARETApraia da Mareta lies within a large bay to the east of Cape St.

Vincent, which protects it from the prevailing winds and waves.

part of the village of Sagres, Mareta beach is frequented and

enjoyed for its gentle bathing. It has ample parking but its not

organised, with support facilities (restaurants and toilets) and

surveillance in the bathing season. Southerly oriented

pRAIA DO TONELAlthough less sheltered than the Beliche, it still falls within the

cove enclosed by the ponta de Sagres and Cape St. Vicente.

The beach looks out at the ponta de Sagres, with its steep cliffs,

and Sagres Fortress. Located 500 metres from the centre of

Sagres, it has parking with no organisation, and support facilities

(restaurant and toilets) and is supervised during the bathing

season. Westerly orientation.

pRAIA DO BELICHEThis sheltered beach seems to have been excavated into the

high cliffs and is warm in colour. To reach the beach you must

descend a wide staircase of stones. Located near Sagres

(3kms), it has ample parking, with nearby support facilities

(restaurant and toilets) but is only supervised during the bathing

season. Southwest Orientation

WEST COASTpRAIA DO TELHEIRODespite being relatively sheltered from the cold north winds,

this is a quiet beach but with difficult access. It is the first

beach after the West Cape St. Vicente. Telheiro has no parking

organisation, no support facilities and supervision. The path is

not signposted and access is only recommended for all-terrain

vehicles. Southwest oriented.

pONTA RuIVAThis beach owes its name to a huge pillar on the south side

of the beach. Along the bay a famous wave that is well know

amoung surfers is formed. The beach is very quiet. Located near

Vila do Bispo, (6 kms) parking has no organisation, no support

facilities and supervision. The path is not signposted and is

recommended for all terrain vehicles only. Northwest oriented.

CASTELEJOThe cliffs here are tall and dark, with the tower of ASpA on

the south cliff reaching over 140 metres. This beach is very

popular for surfing and body boarding, especially for schools in

the locality. Located near Vila do Bispo (4 kms), it has ample

parking with support facilities (restaurant and toilets) and it is

supervised during the bathing season. Northwest Oriented.

CORDOAMAThis is a wide beach with sand stretching out of sight to both

the North and South. Though this beach is often frequented by

surfing and bodyboarding schools, you can always find some

tranquility. The lofty cliffs reach more than a hundred feet high,

and there is a natural viewpoint, which is often used as a jumping

off point for parasailing. Located near Vila do Bispo (4 kms), it

has ample parking which is not organised and support facilities

(restaurant and toilets). It is only supervised during the bathing

season. Northwest located.

WEST COASTpRAIA DA BARRIGAIt is a quiet beach, with interesting nooks generated by cutting

the cliffs. Walking south you can reach at low tide the beach

Castelejo, through Cordoama, and observe the rocky walls,

with its blades overlapping intensely folded and deformed,

the testimony of the incredible forces that these rocks were

subjected. Located near Vila do Bispo (6 kms) and about

25 minutes by car. parking is not orderly, with little capacity.

Northeast oriented.

pRAIA DO AMADOpraia do Amado is often proclaimed to be the most popular

beach along the west coast of the Algarve, and is certainly the

surfers’ favourite and home to several surf championships.

you’ll see evidence of the surf popularity by the presence of

two or three surf schools on the beach for much of the year.

Here people of all ages can have a go at surfing, under the

watchful eye of the instructors. praia do Amado is purely a

beach with a surf cafe and a mobile snack bar - the nearest

village is Carrapateira. There is plenty of car parking at the top

of the cliffs, even for all the camper vans. praia do Amado is

supervised during the beach season.

pRAIA DA BORDEIRAThe huge beach is backed by big sand dunes and the Bordeira

river forms a warm lagoon on one side. It is just north of

Carrapateira and frequented by surfers and kite surfers. The

shallow lagoon is particularly good for children as they can play in

relative safety and the water is quite a bit warmer than the sea!

There are two ways of accessing the beach; the first being from

a large carpark at the back of the beach and across the narrow

river to the sand. The second access is found by following the

road up the hill from the car park. From here access is by way

of a long wooden, stepped walkway.

LAGOSGoing out is easy. There are countless bars and pubs while walking through the old town of Lagos. Some suggestions:

STEVIE RAy’S BLuES JAzz BAR This intimate two-level candlelit joint is the best live-music bar in town. On weekends it has live blues, jazz and oldies. It attracts a smart-casual older crowd.

BON VIVANTThanks to its bright signage, it’s hard to miss this longstanding bar. It’s less seedy than some of the pub-like drinking holes and is spread across three levels with various terraces. It’s pretty hot once it gets going (usually late).

TABERNA DE LAGOSBoasting a stylish space and brooding electronic music, this airy and atmospheric bar attracts a somewhat savvier bar-goer (higher cocktail prices also keep some punters away

LOuNGESmall and sleek, Lounge plays a good range of, you guessed it, lounge music and more commercial-style house music

GRAND CAFéThis classy place has three bars, lots of gold leaf, kitsch, red velvet and cherubs, over which are draped dressed-up local and foreign hipsters

AMuRAS BAROne of half a dozen restaurant-bars overlooking the marina, this one attracts a slightly more staid crowd, that comes for fruity cocktails and live music most nights.

DuNA BEACH CLuBChill out with the smart set at this bar-restaurant, open day and night. It’s located bang on Meia praia beach, with a pool and attitude. At night it’s the bar for the ‘resort-chic’ folk.

ALJEzuRAljezur was founded by the arabs on the 10 C and it’s castle was concquered int 1426 by Mestre de Santiago d polo peres Correia, receiving its town charter from the king D Dinis in 1280. For centuries and due to its geographical position it was almost forgotten, being nowadays one village in progress. Its narrow streets with white houses built on the hill slope were once protected by the castle. The quite beaches in the area having a wildfeature are very well know by the water and nature lovers.

SAGRESCABO SãO VINCENTEA long straight road leads you to a light house which is at the most western tip of Europe. The views of the cliffs with the sea hitting them is well worth a visit. There is a visitors centre and gift shop and café as well as stalls along side the car park selling ice cream and local produce. you can walk close to the light house but not go up. FORTALEzAThe remote location surrounded by the oceans inspired Henry the Navigator to devise his 15th century expeditions to the unknown lands of the western side of Africa. Sagres fort is not a classically constructed fort, it is more a large wall that divides the mainland from the headland, with the other three side protected by 60 meter high cliffs.Inside fort’s walls is a giant wind compass that was used to aid early navigation and the small chapel of Nossa Senhora da Graça that houses early images of Saint Vincent and ground level ruins of the major sections of the old fort. Much of the original fort was destroyed in the 1755 earthquake and the resulting tidal wave that rose higher than the giant cliffs. From the exposed Fortaleza de Sagres there are great panoramic views over the ocean and Cabo de Vincent.

LAGOSLagos is an ancient maritime town with more than 2,000 years of history. The name Lagos is of Celtic origin and is derived from the word Lacobriga. Lagos first became a settlement of the Carthaginians, who recruited Celtic tribesmen in their war against the Romans (the punic Wars). Later it became colonized by the Romans, becoming part of the Roman province Lusitania. Some Roman remains can still be found in Lagos and the surrounding countryside and Lacobriga was, even in those times, an important harbour.

Lagos, was the port where the portuguese explorers set out for their first voyages down the coast of Africa, and is still impressive with its magnificent fortress on the riverfront and medieval walls enveloping the old city and narrow streets. There’s also plenty of culture to be found in Lagos’ art galleries or open air concerts beneath the city walls. The church of Santo Antonio is lined with intricate wood carvings coated in gold leaf plundered from Brazil. On a darker note, a 15th-century building near the river is believed to be the site of Europe’s first African slave market.

Lagos has over the past decades been one of the top tourist destinations in portugal, due to its diverse offerings from beaches to bars, restaurants and hotels. It is also renowned for its vibrant nightlife, especially during summer.

Lagos, with its ocean front offers beautiful beaches, mild climate, a scenic coastline, and historical heritage. The Marina de Lagos has 460 berths and has become an important centre for long-distance cruisers, and it’s also famous for its modern drawbridge. Lagos also has plenty of cultural entertainment venues which celebrate many local traditions, ranging from architecture to gastronomy and handicrafts.

MONCHIquEFor a complete change of scenery, take a drive up the narrow winding road to the mountain village of Monchique, situated just north of portimao. Here you will find Algarve’s highest peak, Foia (900mts), having extensive views of the western coastline. This excursion will make you believe that you are no longer in the Algarve, but instead in a tropical jungle amidst flourishing mountain valleys. Half the fun is soaking in the scenery along the way. The mountain sides are covered with lush vegetation and terraces of orange and lemon groves. you may see a farmer busy at work picking oranges or selling them at his roadside stand. Notice the scent of the towering lean eucalyptus trees that grace your route in abundance.

Monchique has some great little cafés with tasty pastries and snacks, some of which are only found here. Try the chicken piri-piri (BBq chicken with a flavourful slightly spicy sauce), or smoked ham (presunto), specialities of this area served up in the little restaurants. On a Sunday afternoon you can observe families strolling down the paths of the beautifully manicured and terraced public garden.

A couple of good sized shops in the town of Monchique have a great selection of cork and leather goods in addition to the pottery. These shops are nestled within the tiny streets, so take a good walk through the town and you will surely stumble upon them. Take a moment to stop into the old church as you roam up and down the hills of this old town.

If it is a clear day, drive up past the town of Monchique for about 10 minutes and you will reach the top of the mountain for some unbelievable views all the way to the coast. The terrain at the top is rugged, so bring comfy walking shoes.
