NEXT GENERATION SCIENCE STANDARDS (NGSS)

• MS-ETS1-1. Define the criteria and constraints of a design problem with sufficient precision to ensure a successful solution, taking into account relevant scientific principles and potential impacts on people and the natural environment that may limit possible solutions.

• MS-ETS1-2. Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process to determine how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.

• MS-ETS1-3. Analyze data from tests to determine similarities and differences among several design solutions to identify the best characteristics of each that can be combined into a new solution to better meet the criteria for success.

• MS-ETS1-4. Develop a model to generate data for iterative testing and modification of a proposed object, tool, or process such that an optimal design can be achieved.

OBJECTIVES

Content Objectives

• Identify the Engineering Design Process.

• Design an air packaging prototype and test the prototype.

Language Objectives

• Define vocabulary for the Engineering Design Process.

• Take notes on the Engineering Design Process.

VOCABULARY**This should go into your Science Dictionary

• Engineering Design Process: is a series of steps that engineering teams use to guide them as they solve problems.• Technology: is the application of science for real-world

purposes.• Engineering: is the application of science and

mathematics to solve real-life problems.• Trade-off: is the act of giving up one advantage to keep

another.• Constraints: limitations or challenges• Prototype: a test model of a product.

WHAT IS TECHNOLOGY?

• Technology can include products, processes, and systems.• The method that is used to develop new technology is

called the engineering design process.• Technologies have been developed to improve mankind

(buildings, transportation, medicine, etc.)• Technology can be both simple and complex.

WHAT DO ENGINEERS DO?

• Much of the technology we use today is the result of engineering.• There are many types of engineers.• Chemical engineers (develop chemical products)• Electrical and mechanical engineers (work with

computers and machines)• Biomedical (design medical devices like x-rays or

prosthetics)• Engineers apply science and math.• Math is important to all fields of engineering.• Engineers solve real-world problems.

1. Identify a need• The first step in the engineering design process is to select a need to

address.

2. Conduct Research• To find an engineering design solution, you need to find out as much

about the need as you can.

3. Brainstorm Solutions• Cooperate with others to come up with as many possible solutions as

you can. These are not final solutions. They are ideas to try.

4. Select a Solution• Which of your ideas do you want to try? Pick one, and plan how you

want to try it

Engineering Design Process

5. Build a Prototype• Your prototype should be a working model of your solution.

6. Test and Evaluate• Your prototype probably won’t be perfect the first time, but you

should be on the right track.

7. Redesign to Improve• Make design changes to improve your model so that it better solves

your problem.

8. Communicate Your Results• When your prototype is finished, you have designed a solution to

your problem. Tell others how you did it!

continuation….

• Understand the need: What is the problem? What do we want to accomplish? What are the project requirements? What are the limitations? Who is the customer? What is our goal? Gather information and conduct research - talking to people from many different backgrounds.

• Brainstorm different designs: Imagine and brainstorm ideas. Be creative; build upon the wild and crazy ideas of others. Investigate existing technologies and methods to use. Explore, compare and analyze many possible solutions.

• Select a design: Based on the needs identified, select the most promising idea.

• Plan: Draw a diagram of your idea. How will it work? What environmental and cultural considerations will you evaluate? What materials and tools are needed? What analyses must you do? How will you test it to make sure it works?

• Create: Assign team tasks. Build a prototype and test it against your design objectives. Push yourself for creativity, imagination and excellence in design. Does it work? Analyze and talk about what works, what doesn't and what could be improved.

• Improve: Discuss how you could improve your product. Make revisions. Draw new designs. Iterate your design to make your product the best it can be.

AIR PACKAGING SYSTEMDear Engineers,

On behalf of the United States Department of Defense, we would like to congratulate you for being selected as the top engineers in the United States. What the Department of Defense would like you to do is to create a packaging system that will be used to send out packages to our soldiers abroad. We would like to send our team of soldiers fragile items that are essential. You and your team will create an air package system and will test your systems. The best package system prototype will be used and your team of engineers will be hired under the Department of Defense. I wish you the best of luck in your mission. Remember be creative and imaginative. Once again, I thank you for taking part in this important mission.

Respectfully,

President Obama,

Commander in Chief

AIR PACKAGE SYSTEM DESIGN GROUP ACTIVITY

• Materials:• 20 straws per group• Tape• String/yarn• Plastic bag, trash bag, or other materials (parachute)

Your group must create a package that will prevent fragile items from cracking. Remember you must brainstorm a design a prototype and test your prototype. Lastly, we will be testing your design by putting a raw egg in your package and it will be dropped from on of the buildings in school.
