Bellringer
For our bellringer, we are going to review the practice worksheet from yesterday.
Please have this on your desk.
Review
We have began our study of measurement with length
What unit do we use to measure length?
What are some things we measure the length of in everyday life?
How do we measure length?
Learning TargetLearning Target
I understand the purpose for using tools of measurement. This means I know what timers, meter sticks, meter sticks, balances, and spring scales are used for.
I can choose appropriate tools for measurement. This means I can choose the best tool to make a certain measurement.

Volume
Volume: the amount of space an object takes up
Volume
Regular shapes – Use a ruler to measure each dimension
(length, width, and height)– It doesn’t matter which is which!– Find volume using the correct formula
• V = l x w x hV = l x w x h
– Units: cubic centimeter (cm3)
Try It!
Find the volume of a box is 10cm long, 15cm wide, and 20cm deep.– Answer: 3000 cubic centimeters
Volume of a Liquid
Use a graduated cylinder
Units: Milliliter (mL)
Volume of a Liquid
Read the volume at the bottom of the meniscus – The meniscus is the curved
surface of the water– Always read it at eye level
Volume of a Liquid
Tips– Know what the unnumbered marks
represent– Estimate if you are between 2 marks
Volume of Irregular Objects
For example: a rock!
When objects do not take on a regular shape or it is difficult to measure their dimensions we use a different method to find their volume, this method is called water displacement
Use the method of water displacement
Volume of Irregular Objects
Displacement is– The amount of water an object replaces– Equal to the object’s volume
Volume of Irregular Objects
Steps– 1.) Fill a graduated cylinder with a certain
amount of water• Not too much! But, it must be enough to cover
the object you are going to measure!
– 2.) Record the volume of the water in your data (starting volume)
Volume of Irregular Objects
3.) Carefully place the object in the graduated cylinder – Be sure not to splash out any data or this
will affect your results!
4.) Record the new volume in your data table (ending volume)
Volume of Irregular Objects
– 5.) Subtract the starting volume from the ending volume• This is the volume of your object!• You can write the volume in milliliters OROR
you can write it in cubic centimeters• 1 milliliter = 1 cubic centimeter
Volume of Irregular Objects

How do we calculate the volume of a regular object like a box?
What tool do we use to measure the volume of a liquid?
What method do we use to measure the volume of an irregular object like a piece of oddly shaped metal?
