From the great outdoors to its historic county seat, the Bellefonte Intervalley Area offers plenty of space for four seasons of fun. Join local residents and longtime visitors at annual events and activities to find out why the area is a wonderful place to relax, rejuvenate, and celebrate.

In Victorian Bellefonte, the first sign of spring is daffodils poking out of the ground. That’s because volunteers spent five years planting more than 200,000 daffodils around the town. Tallyrand Park is a particularly beautiful spot for enjoying these blankets of spring blooms, and it’s also where the Bellefonte Community Easter Egg Hunt takes place.

Anglers from around the world look forward to the first day of Pennsylvania’s trout season, which begins on the first Saturday after April 11 and continues through Labor Day. Thanks to mountain-fed, limestone-bedded streams, trout flourish in the region’s cool-running waters. Areas newly opened to the public for fishing include the 1,800-acre Spring Creek Canyon and a stretch of Spring Creek in Bellefonte. Local tackle shops and bed-and-breakfasts cater to anglers and love to swap fish tales.

On the third weekend in May each year, Bellefonte celebrates the town’s clear waters

with the Big Spring Festival in Talleyrand Park. The festival gets its name from the park’s Big Spring, which pours 11 million gallons of fresh water each day into the town’s water supply and Spring Creek. Visitors can watch experts stock the creek with trout, give kayaking a try, and enjoy a host of entertainers, craft booths, and food vendors.

Spring also marks the beginning of the boating season at Bald Eagle State Park in northern Centre County. A full-service marina at the park’s 1,730-acre

Foster Joseph Sayers Reservoir offers rentals of water-ski boats, pontoon boats, fishing boats, jet skis, sailboats, kayaks, canoes, pedal boats, and stand-up paddleboards, as well as bicycles, for exploring around the lake. Families enjoy the sandy swimming beach and picnic area.

The Nature Inn at Bald Eagle offers doorstep access to the park’s land and water activities as well as beautiful views of lake, mountains, and wildlife. Visitors also can camp at the park or nearby at the Bellefonte KOA or Gram & Pap’s Fort Bellefonte Campground.

Every season brings new reasons to visit the Bellefonte Intervalley Area

Train rides offer a great chance to see the beauty of the area.

Bellefonte hosts many festivals during the year.

Back in town, the Bellefonte Cruise marks the official start of summer on Father’s Day weekend. Against the backdrop of historic Victorian architecture, the cruise lines the streets with stock cars, antique cars, street rods, military vehicles, cruising and touring motorcycles, and more. The family-friendly event offers entertainment for everyone, from a 5K race to hula hoop contest to sock hop.

Families also look forward to the Bellefonte Children’s Fair, a town tradition for six decades. At the June event, kids (and kids at heart) can enjoy games, activities, face painting, yummy festival food, raffles, and displays, all while raising funds to provide playground equipment for local parks.

Warm weather brings musicians and music-lovers outdoors. On Sundays, musicians play from the Talleyrand Park gazebo while the community gathers on the lawn to listen, picnic, and socialize. In July, JazzPA’s Summer Jazz Celebration, one of the premier jazz events west of the Hudson River, takes place in Bellefonte and State College, with the main stage in Talleyrand Park, and

many performances free of charge. In August, Talleyrand Park is once again

the place to be as the Bellefonte Arts & Crafts Fair features more than 100 juried crafters and artists, plus family entertainment, great food, and children’s activities.

When fall arrives, the area’s bed-and-breakfasts, hotels, and motels provide the perfect base for exploring the gorgeous fall colors of the area’s mountains and valleys. Autumn hues usually peak in October, along with crisp fall weather for a wide range of outdoor activities.

Bellefonte’s premier winter event is Bellefonte Victorian Christmas, bringing to life the holiday traditions and stories of days gone by. Victorian carolers, horse-drawn carriage rides, an arts-and-crafts show, concerts, festival of trees, and much more — it’s all part of an event that’s been a tradition for more than 30 years.

No matter what time of year you visit the Bellefonte Intervalley Area, you’ll find plenty to see and do. Spring, summer, autumn, and winter — we invite you to find out what each season has to offer! n

As soon as you arrive in Victorian Bellefonte, you know it’s someplace special. Everywhere you look are reminders of days gone by, from historic architecture to monuments and museums to shops carrying treasures from earlier times.

One of the oldest and best-preserved towns in Centre County, Bellefonte grew, beginning in the late 1700s, due partly to its location on Spring Creek. The creek powered William Lamb’s mill to produce flour and animal feed, and provided transportation for both people and goods. Today, kayakers test their skills on Spring Creek, and the historic gristmill is home to the Gamble Mill Restaurant and Microbrewery, in the area known as Lamb’s Crossing.

The architectural center of historic Bellefonte is the Centre County Courthouse, dating to 1835, which sits on a hill looking across a market diamond down toward Spring Creek. Thanks to abundant, high-quality iron ore — Central Pennsylvania’s

“gold” — a successful iron-making industry brought wealth and political clout to the area, centered around the county seat of Bellefonte. The town was the most prosperous community between Harrisburg and Pittsburgh during the first half of the 1800s, and several Pennsylvania governors called Bellefonte home before or after their terms as governor. A monument in Talleyrand Park honors these statesmen, and a statue of Andrew Gregg Curtin, 15th governor of Pennsylvania, stands outside the courthouse,

along with the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial. Some of Bellefonte’s oldest existing

buildings are Georgian-style stone houses near the intersection of Allegheny and High streets. Other architectural styles in this National Register Historic District include Italianate, Queene Anne, Classical Revival, Second Empire, and the Victorian style that attracts so many visitors.

Many of these buildings now house museums and businesses. Visit the Bellefonte Art Museum for Centre County in the 1810 John Blair Linn House, or explore Centre County history and genealogy at the Centre County Library and Pennsylvania Room in the 1815 Potter home. Look up at the unique fish-scale tin façade of the Crider Exchange Building before browsing the shops inside.

At Talleyrand Park, along the banks of Spring Creek, you’ll find the Intervalley Area Chamber of Commerce’s office in the former train station. The Bellefonte Historical Railroad Society offers fall-foliage and “Santa

Express” excursions from the station in beautifully restored railcars. The park also is home to the George Grey Barnard Sculpture Garden and the Big Spring, source of Bellefonte’s sparkling drinking water and the town’s name (la belle fonte, or beautiful fountain).

Also along the waterfront is the Pennsylvania Match Factory. In the early 1900s, the factory was one of the country’s leading producers of wooden matches. Now the restored and renovated complex is home to the American Philatelic Society’s national headquarters and the country’s largest stamp-collecting library, which welcomes visitors who would like to learn more about this fascinating hobby.

In a town with so much history on display, it’s no surprise that friendly innkeepers offer visitors the opportunity to spend the night in

beautifully restored stately homes, often filled with period furnishings. You can experience Victorian-era hospitality and modern conveniences in bed-and-breakfasts such as Barnard House, McCafferty House, Our Fair Lady, The Queen, The Reynolds Mansion, Inn

at Walnut Acres, and Riffles & Run.

During your visit, you can explore the historic district as you shop for antiques and collectibles in the Plaza Centre, or toys from your childhood at Pure Imagination. Look for tomorrow’s family heirloom at Confer’s Jewelers, and wander among the many other specialty shops, such as Alleycat Quiltworks, that line the downtown streets.

Stop for a bite to eat at longtime local favorites such as The Governors’

Pub and Bonfatto’s, or grab a frosty treat at Dairy Queen, or frothy coffee drink at Cool Beans. Convenient to Talleyrand Park and its welcome center is Café on the Park. For lunch or dinner, check out the stir-fries at Bellefonte Wok or the delicious pizzas at Pizza Mia.

Wherever you go in Victorian Bellefonte, you’ll find welcoming residents who are proud of their town’s heritage. Once you’ve visited, you too will understand what makes this town at the edge of the Allegheny Mountains so special. n
