and Student Performance
Dear Belle Plaine District Residents,
Greetings from the Belle Plaine School District! It is an exciting and challenging time to be in public education and it is very exciting to be involved with the Belle Plaine Schools. We have many great things happening in our district and I encourage you to become involved in our school district programs.
Our vision for the Belle Plaine Schools is; “We will work together as a united community with mutual respect to achieve academic & co-curricular excellence, develop lifelong learners and productive citizens in a safe and supportive environment.” We work hard every day to develop lifelong learners through a balanced approach of providing strong educational opportunities in the classroom, offering numerous service opportunities through many of our student organizations, and encouraging our students to be involved in our strong activity programs in academics, arts, and athletics.
The academic progress of our students is our number one priority in the Belle Plaine Schools. The improved academic performance of all of our students is a goal that may only be attained through a collaborative effort on behalf of our students, our teachers and our parents. I encourage all parents to work closely with your child(ren) to instill the value of a good education and provide them with the support necessary at home to be academically successful. Please make sure your child is keeping current on all homework assignments and is seeking the necessary assistance if he/she is struggling in any particular subject areas.
Our school district is fortunate to have quality staff members who are here to help your students succeed. Our teachers continually strive to attain the most current teaching strategies to bring success to all learners. We have been fortunate to be growing in enrollment and that has allowed us to hire some additional staff and work strategically on improving our technology equipment across the district. SMARTBoard technology is present in many classrooms throughout the district and is available in each of our buildings. Our goal is to have this technology available in every classroom for greater interactive learning experiences for all students.
I am looking forward to another exciting year in the Belle Plaine Schools. We will continue to work hard to raise the academic achievement of all our students and encourage all of our residents to be involved in the success of your local school. Success in our efforts to increase academic performance will only occur through the combined efforts of school staff, students, parents and the community. If you have any questions about the Belle Plaine Schools, please feel free to contact me at any time at 952.873.2400. A great resource for school news and information is our outstanding school district website. The address for this site is www.belleplaine.k12.mn.us. Let’s have a great school year everyone!

PARENTS - WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!!!
Parents: PLEASE HELP US. We need some assistance in getting our kids out of school and home to you after practices each day - especially our junior high students.
With sometimes over two hundred students on school grounds after school, it becomes a supervisory nightmare when students are forced (for whatever reason) to wait for rides home after practice.
Our coaches will make sure your child is ready for pickup between 5:00-5:15 each practice day. Please have arrangements made for this.
Thank You!!!!!!

Medications at SchoolThe Belle Plaine School Board recognizes that most student medications can be given at home. The School Board also recognizes that at times it is essential that medications be dispensed in school and has established a policy regarding this.
All medications need a physician’s order to be administered by school personnel. The written order must specify the name of the medication, its purpose, and the time, dosage, and method for administering. Any changes in schedule or dosage must be documented and signed by both parent/guardian and the physician.
The parent/guardian must also sign a medication-authorization form, which is available from the school. Prescription medications must be provided in a pharmacy-labeled prescription container identifying the student, name of the medication, dosage, schedule and the physician’s name.
Required immunizationsBefore enrolling in school, Minnesota law requires that students have the followingimmunizations.
To go to school in Minnesota, students must show they’ve had these immunizations or must file a legal exemption with the school. Parents may file a medical exemption signed by a health care provider or a conscientious objection signed by parent/guardian and notarized.

Changes for 2011 - 2012
Check out more information and announcements throughout the yearwww.belleplaine.mn.k12.us
It is early July and the Belle Plaine School District is finalizing plans for another terrific school year. I usually use this section of the calendar to present information about the various changes that are occurring in the school district for the coming school year. This year that list of changes is pretty minimal so I would like to concentrate on one change that will be fairly minor, but will have a big impact on a very important component to our success as a school district – communication.
As a school district we try to communicate with our public by a variety of means - school newsletters, this calendar, report cards to parents, our website and web pages by staff and administrators along with our parent notification system to name just a few. We understand that good communication between the school district and family members and community members is important to the success that we all expect during a given year.
The change that we are undertaking this year is with our parent notification system. This system allows us to send messages to parents and families via email, text messages or telephone calls in an effort to update everyone on current school information such as school closings or important events. For the past two years, we have used Honeywell Instant Alert as our notification system and this product has worked well for us. One of the shortfalls of the system, however, is that contact information was not tied directly to our student information system (Infinite Campus) and was, in essence, a separate database of information that had to be maintained and updated on a regular basis.
To remedy this duplication of information, our district has made the decision to use our Infinite Campus system for our parent notification system. It is our hope that we will have more current contact information by using just one database of information for this purpose. The system will have the same capabilities of email, text messaging and telephone calls for relaying messages as we have previously had. As in the past, parents may choose the preferred method of communication that they wish to have used for their family.
In order for this service to be successful, I am asking that all families make a special effort to update two pieces of information within the Infinite Campus system – all contact information for family members and the method of communication that is desired by the family. Updating this information should take just a few minutes and will ensure that we are able to effectively communicate with all parents and families.
In order to make the necessary changes to contact information, please log in to the Infinite Campus system and select “Family Members” along the left side of the screen. Update contact information for family members as appropriate and click on save. To complete the process, click on “Contact Preferences” along the left side of the screen and check the appropriate boxes to indicate your preference for contact method.
If you have any question about updating your information and preferences, please check our website at www.belleplaine.k12.mn.us for further instructions. You may also request Infinite Campus login information at the district website. Additional information regarding this process will be available as the new school year begins.
We are looking forward to a great 2011-2012 school year. See you back in school on Tuesday, September 6th!

2010-2011 Annual Report on Curriculum and Student Performance
Mission Statement:The mission of Belle Plaine Public Schools is to provide educational opportunities that meet the needs of individual learners.
Student Performance:Belle Plaine Public Schools continue to implement academic standards required under the No Child Left Behind Act and by the Minnesota Department of Education.
Faculty at Belle Plaine Schools reviewed the current math curriculum and its alignment to the new MCAIII math standards in the 2009-2010 school year. A new math curriculum will be implemented in Kindergarten through Grade 10 during the 2011-2012 school year.
Belle Plaine Public Schools continue to administer the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCAII and MCAIII). Students in grades 3-8 take exams in reading and mathematics. Students take a final writing exam in Grade 9, a final reading exam in Grade 10 and a final mathematics exam in Grade 11. English Language Learners take the Test of Emerging Academic English (TEAE) to assess reading and writing, the Minnesota SOLOM to assess listening/speaking skills. In the 2011-2012 school year English Language Learners will be taking the ACCESS exam in grades K-12 to replace the TEAE and SOLOM examinations. More information on state examinations is available at the Minnesota Department of Education at http://education.state.mn.us under the “Accountability Programs” tab.
Students began taking the Northwest Evaluation Association’s (NWEA) Measures of Academic Progress in Grades 2-8 in 2007-2008. In 2010-2011, all students in Kindergarten through Grade 8 took the reading, math and language assessments two or three times throughout the school year. This computerized assessment provides detailed data about student academic progress for school district professionals and parents. In the 2011-2012 school year, students in Grade 9 will also be included in the assessment.
Our district uses the results of the MCAII and NWEA examinations in order to monitor student progress and systemic strength. We continuously strive to improve our curriculum and academic programs. Community members can participate in these processes by becoming a member of the D.A.C.
This publication describes requirements found in current state law. These procedures reflect the 2010-2011 school year’s goals and educational progress as well as the proposed 2010-2011 goals and improvement plans. Minnesota P.E.R. Legislations provides for education accountability and is intended to achieve goals of community involvement, curriculum evaluation and improvement of student achievement. Membership on the District’s Advisory Council (D.A.C.) is open to all district residents. The length of service/participation is on going based on interest and need. Residents are welcome and encouraged to call the District Office (952) 873-2400 or contact a member of the D.A.C. to join our curriculum review team.
